Per a recent study noted by Glenn, an infection by the common cold may prevent the flu by activating the interferon portion of the body's immune defenses. Although hard to test, this leads the researchers to speculate that colds may also stave off COVID.
Well. One message here - always trust wild speculation from Dr. Tom! Back in June the tireless research chemist and pharma follower Derek Lowe outlined the mechanisms by which COVID jams up our body's natural defenses.
From the article and comments a couple of ideas emerged, which I tweeted about:
1 - interferon therapy MAY mitigate a COVID infection;
2- co-infection by anything that activates the interferon system, such as colds (or the normal flu?) MAY help beat back COVID.
My punchline:
*IF* co-infection mitigates COVID the implications are notable. First, the advent of the fall cold/flu season may see a *reduction* in COVID spread/severity. *PLOT TWIST*!
Second, would it be better for the low-risk to skip the annual flu shot? And how would this be tested?
I can't imagine our public health leaders advising at-risk groups such as seniors to skip the annual flu shot (I know I'm not.) Frankly, I can't imagine them urging the young, hale and hearty to skip the regular flu shot - it MIGHT be a great idea, but it would be a heck of a roll of the dice.
As to testing the hypothesis, my only brainwave was to remark on the high levels of asymptomatic COVID cases found in some homeless shelters. Not to stereotype, but that seems like a plausible environment for co-infection with colds or other ailments.

So it would seem that the majority of Covid 19 tests are asymptomatic.
It's not cold season yet, or flu season, so how would we know that the antibodies would fight off another SARS type virus?

Re. RSE's link, that seems to conclusively explain almost everything, I'm left with one question.
Early in the "crisis", we were getting stories from northern Italy of bodies stacked like cordwood and patients being allowed to die as part of a forced rationing of care. NYC was portrayed as not very far from that.
At the time, an overwhelming reaction did not seem inappropriate.

I NEVER have had a flu shot. NEVER.
My birthday is on Tuesday, and I will be 72.
The last vaccination I had was when I had to get a couple of them when I was 20 before I went to live in West Berlin. I think I got a booster for MMR and smallpox, plus maybe a plague vaccine. (1967)
I also get very few colds, although it seems like I had one per year when I was in grade school.

My youngest spent the entire pandemic working in the Boston homeless shelters, with these 50+% positive peeps. He never got it either. At least, not clinically.
Time to face the fact that for most people--Covid is a flu equivalent--meaning, a hit for week, then better.
We tanked out economy for-- what???
The two week "flatten the curve" was needed for the NE; gave the rest of us a big break too. A chance to get our PPE in order, and make contingency plans. My thanks to my fellow citizens for that.
We should have been in church on Easter Sunday, singing Jesus Christ is Risen Today and getting towards the herd immunity that we are now just working on.

During a Trump rally I attended earlier this year, President Trump abruptly cut his speech short and left. It was only later that we found out why.
He was rushing off to Dover Air Force base so he could be with families of fallen soldiers as their bodies were brought back home.
President Trump didn’t tell anyone where he was going. He didn’t want credit for it. He just wanted to be there for those families during their hardest moments.
I am proud of our Commander in Chief @realDonaldTrump!

I think my daughter had it in January/February. She was really sick for about a week.
Since I do dishes by hand at least twice daily, plus washing my hands after using the bathroom and cleaning up after animals, plus before cooking, I am the most prolific hand-washer in my family.
I also added vitamins to my daily bunch of pills.

Anonamom, Is it possible I had it? Maybe. SIL's father had it, and her sister tested positive at the same time. The sisters had been with their father for two days before, and SIL cared for him at home. Because we are crazy, she kept working with us, and we all kept our mouths shut. I did cough a bit turning the soil in my raised bed during this time, but no fever or anything else. I just figured it was a minor cold or allergies at the time. Nothing to be alarmed about. (True confessions there! I felt like I was working in some kind of underground rebel outfit!)

I'm just cranky because it's Labor Day weekend, and normally that's when the Cape clears out, and all the great spots are not crowded anymore. I don't see people leaving. Schools are delayed until October for in-person learning off Cape. And as it gets colder at night here, I can't imaging what will happen to restaurants. People won't sit outside in the cold. So I guess it's just a general anger about the whole damn thing!

I also mentioned Quercetin but didn’t try to pin him down on that either. His view seemed to be that at this point in NYC getting infected is a pretty remote risk.

Having unleashed the whirlwinds of the local tyrants (by goading them to act or else he would), Trump had no power to stop it by Easter, even if he wanted to. But, since he was still standing in the Rose Garden watching Fauci use the POTUS pulpit to consolidate and extend the pillaging of the Constitutional Republic, there was no hint at Easter that Trump realized the blunder.

As anonamom, M.D. knows, I had it in March. I woke up at about three in the morning because I was so hot, went back to sleep and woke up a few hours later thinking I had a mild hangover - which wasn’t possible since I had little to drink the night before. At its peak, I graded it between a mild flu and a decent hangover - no big deal.
A few people here knew via email at the time: it damned near killed my bar. And it really screwed up the lives of the bartenders and servers. I’m not sure who is ultimately responsible for the hysteria (pun perhaps intended) but they need to be drawn and quartered.
And if I may channel TK for a moment: thankfully none of our government bureaucrat heroes lost their jobs or pensions, so that makes me feel warm and fuzzy about the entire charade...

Whitmer goes before the MI SC on the 9th.
From a friend today re that:
OPINION: WHY GOVERNOR WHITMER WILL LOSE ON CVOID-19 EXECUTIVE ORDERS IN THE SUPREME COURT
This coming Wednesday, September 9, the Supreme Court of Michigan will hear oral arguments concerning our Governor’s unbridled power grab regarding the Executive Orders concerning COVID-19. I predict they will rule against her and our legislature (the people) will finally be able to reclaim its constitutional authority. Many of the Governor’s EO’s may be justified but the people (the legislature) should have constitutional input and oversight. Lower courts have ruled in the Governor’s favor saying that she has the legal authority to declare an Emergency, and more importantly, reject the legislatures input (our representatives) and continue writing Executive Orders without oversight. The Michigan Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 in the Governors favor with Justice Turkel dissenting against the other two Justices (see Justice Turkel’s dissenting Opinion by clicking link below). Justice Turkel’s dissenting opinion was correct for several reasons.
The Governor bases her authority to continue to declare an Emergency under the 1945 Emergency Powers of Governor Act (“EPGA”) for an indefinite time. I believe the Supreme Court will strike down the 1945 statute, ruling it is unconstitutional, restoring our Republic here in Michigan. I would think the same thing no matter which party controlled the Governorship. This should not be a political issue. It is a Constitutional issue.
How can a statute enacted in 1945 now be deemed unconstitutional, some 75 years later? Keep in mind, this will be the first time in history it has been ruled on. No Michigan Governor has ever used the EPGA to this extent, writing an unprecedented 174 Executive Orders. Based on the EPGA, the Governor says she can continue these actions until she feels an Emergency no longer exists. What is more troubling is that she is the one who makes that decision. A lot of us like the Executive Orders she has passed and feel they are reasonable while a lot of us feel the opposite. However, it doesn’t matter how you feel about the EO’s, the Governor’s actions are unconstitutional.
Our government is a Representative Republic. Each branch, the Legislative, the Executive and the Judicial has limited powers. One branch of government can’t give up its powers to another branch, nor can another branch accept those powers. The problem with the EPGA is that it says that the legislature must give up its law making responsibilities and oversight for an indefinite time to the Governor. The Executive Branch (the Governor) isn’t supposed to write laws, it is supposed to enforce the laws. If this power grab isn’t stopped now, the Governor will be able to continue her power grab and so will future Governors. That should frighten you, whatever side of the political spectrum you are on. That is what the Supreme Court is going to rule on as outlined in Justice Turkel’s dissenting opinion.
Our attorney in the water level case, Philip Ellison, argued that the EPGA is unconstitutional in an Amicus Brief he filed on behalf of the legislature against the Governor in this case. His argument submits that the legislature (the people’s representatives) have the right of oversight and direction in the COVID crisis and is entitled to input and approval instead of the Governor’s dictatorial mandates without oversight. The legislature may well have agreed with the Governor on many of the Executive Orders but we, the people, have been cut out of the entire process.
Why didn’t the legislature argue that the EPGA is unconstitutional? In a round about way they did, but not as eloquently as Justice Turkel opined and he agreed with Phil Ellison in his dissenting opinion. The legislature argued correctly that the 1976 Emergency Management Act (EMA) limited the Governor’s authority to 28 days unless the legislature agrees to extend it which limited the EPGA. The Governor wanted to control the COVID-19 crisis and didn’t want input from our representatives, so the legislature took her to Court. The Governors actions should be extremely troubling to both Democrats and Republicans. This tyrannical power grab is unconstitutional and hopefully, our Supreme Court will rule that way. We will see shortly.

Someone earlier commented that Trump had to thread a needle dealing with this "situation." When all we saw in March was Italy and we knew info out of China was unreliable, I can see how he chose his path. In hindsight I think it's clear he blundered.
Since everything is beyond f-----d up everywhere, I am not sure that we would not have headed down some sort of awful road based on the left's irrational and power hungry behavior. Which is fed by the compliant press. Prior to March we still had antifa and such stirring up trouble. Also we had the accusations of racism going on.
We can't change what happened, but we can try to calmly inform those who refuse to see - one by one. I simply can't understand the fear that I still see in my customers. It's all such a mess.
I have no idea what the answers are, and I am sure we could debate what Trump should or should not have done for an eternity. We are in it now, and must keep pushing ahead.

Beasts, I have an entire strip center whose tenants even now, more than six months in, are able to pay an average of only 42% of the rent they paid last September. That reminds me. The county RE Tax bill for the second half is due Sept 30. Fun.

The governors are also behind a lot of the university’s heavyhanded virus policies. Cuomo has some rule that if there are 100 “cases” on campus they have to switch to all online, and at some higher limit they have to send everyone home. Jack, ccgirl,
I was a convert to Catholicism about 10 years ago, having been driven from the United Methodists. This was when Pope Benedict had been elected to the seat, after the death of Pope John Paul II.
Then Pope Benedict retired (I had never heard of a Pope retiring) and they elected Pope Francis (Pope Che) who has proven to be exactly as I surmised.
They started issuing all these oddball edicts and changing the mass and I ended up being driven out as well. Now I have no church, except occasionally I watch one of the big southern Baptist churches on the internet for their music and sermons.

An acquaintance just told me a house in his neighborhood had the driveway redone by a company called "Black Drives Matter" and the slogan on the side of the truck read, “We apply a liberal amount because we ain't no ways tarred.”

Because I am on the internet and do not depend on the cable or networks for my news, THIS is the side I often see, and why I get so angry at the TV people. He really is a good man. Video at the link.

Interesting to see the base so energized, and the media focused on some of the boats sinking in Lake Travis instead of the other 23 boat rallies.
Middle America is truly ticked off at the Left. The WaPo has gone on record supporting riots if Trump wins. What more proof of their perfidy do we need?

Hi, Jane. AP wrote the story. We did small changes.
I supplied the headline because the article left the significance out.

He’s 100% christian conservative. His family migrated from Haiti. He was born and raised here so he has a great appreciation for America.

MissM: "NEVER have had a flu shot. NEVER. ... I also get very few colds"
I get a flu shot every year! I used to get multiple colds and/or flu every year but it stopped when I started getting the vaccine.
So ... everyone's mileage can vary.
Great to see A-mom, she must've drawn the long straw and got the weekend off! A bit worried about this, though: "The first study of its kind has found nearly half of hospital patients showed no damage at 12 weeks"
I guess that means a bit over half STILL have damage 12 weeks later? Hmmmm ...

Another Bob,
Damned if I know. That's the entire problem with the press sticking their noses in and making it political and slanted to the dem side.
I am sticking with anonamom's advice as opposed to Dr. Fauci's constantly changing political one, however.

Kamala Harris campaigns in Milwaukee tmrw. 3 questions for her:
1. Why did she & Biden snub Wisconsin before?
2. Why should the industrial Midwest return to Biden economic globalism?
3. Why does she attack the Knights of Columbus? Is she anti-Catholic?

ABob,
I’d put money on a big fat yes!’
Dem friend in MA who loves a Fauci and I had a bit of a tiff today. She and her husband are medical people working in hospitals. I conceded that she has seen the worst, but the whole thing is a joke democrats are clinging to, to win an election.
She reminded me of my neighbor who has been in the hospital since June. I replied that he’’s flying a Biden flag which explains it all.
She is very tolerant!
