RE ounces... I drink from a pint glass, not a graduated cylinder.

DrJ

ccgirl,

“Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker.”

― Ogden Nash, Hard Lines

I read it in "The Golden Trashery of Odgen Nashery."

Narciso

Star trek, one could also have gladys kravitz from bewitched

DrJ

ccgirl,

The quote is from the original Star Trek. I think it was the 2nd season episode, "I Mudd."

CCGirl

I love Ogden Nash. My parents had books all over the house, and I lobed reading his poetry. Thanks! I forgot about him!

CCGirl

Loved. Not lobed. But the night is early, and I am sure I will miss type!

Third world energy policy brought to you by the Democrat establishment controlling Sacramento.

@recallgavin2020

(Refers to the ridiculous tweet from the MayorofLA ordering everyone to turn off their AC in a heat wave.)

CCGirl

I thought it was Star Trek, but I recall thinking that she was so annoying that it could not be Star Trek, because I love that show. Especially the early years.

CCGirl

Was the short bald guy in that episode?

President-Elect Jim,SunnyvaleCA

"We need every Californian to help conserve energy"
What are the chances that Mayor of LA's house will turn off A/C and turn on a fan?
I'm thinking ... chances are low

CCGirl

JimSV, your state is rivaling mine for worst leadership ever!

CCGirl

Henry, I like the musical version as well!

President-Elect Jim,SunnyvaleCA

Well, cc, you have that one "extreme right wing" politician ... what's his name? Oh yes, Joe Kennedy!
And being such a populous state we have a larger pool of dysfunctional Dems to choose from. So I'm confident we can win the competition

henry

Jim_nj, wanna bet deadlines evaporate for mail in ballots in November?

MissMarple2

ccgirl,

Did you know that William Shatner is on Twitter? THE William Shatner!

I found out he doesn't get residuals on any of those old shows, because back in the late 60's you only got residuals for the first 3 years of reruns. After that, they belonged to the production company.

CCGirl

Narc, ugh. These people are insane.

Narciso

That toada the wet sprocket.

CCGirl

JimSC, so glad the Kennedy dynasty is now defeated. Although JoJoJo seemed harmless enough. The irony is that a nice, clean, calm Kennedy runs, and he’s defeated by one of the biggest hacks ever in Mass. The left do attack themselves.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

I don't think we even made 100 today...thanks to a high blanket of smoke that turned the midday sun orange and feeble.

CCGirl

Miss M, I am not on twitter. So typical of Hollywood to not pay benefits. I imagine that Star Trek probably is one of the top rerun series of all times.

peter

Thank you, another Bob. Looks like Djokovic was more negligent than intentionally harmful. Whatever. Gives some new faces exposure

DrJ

ccgirl,

I think you are referring to Quark the Ferengi, as the short bald guy. If so, I think he was introduced in "The Next Generation" (the Pikard era) and had a major role in "Deep Space Nine" (the Cisco era).

My neighbor around the corner has a license plate reading "Ferengi." I have no idea what's up with that, other than to surmise he is a Trekkie.

the claimed demand for exports doesn't add up to me. If the Chinese are shipping stuff earlier than usual this stuff will just sit in US warehouses longer than usual.

By "demand" they mean "supply." Seriously, they're saying that the Chinese want to get there stuff here now before higher tariffs kick in, so that's more demand for scarce shipping and port resources. Not higher demand for those exports. So yes, the stuff will sit in warehouses, but that's better than getting hit with high tariffs.

MissMarple2

About time for me to go to bed, after I check Twitter one more time.

CCGirl

DrJ, no in the first series there was a short bald guy who played different roles in various episodes. There is an episode that flashes back to Jack the Ripper, and the little bald actor was in that episode.

MissMarple2

Nytol!

CCGirl

Good night Miss M, and now you can see that I am not being shy about posting!

Dave (in MA)

John Fiedler, also Piglet in the Winnie the Pooh cartoons.

CCGirl

Dave, are you saying he was the little bald guy?

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Others may feel differently but the stuff of nightmares for this cultural caveman;
I've Got You Babe; David Bowie and Marianne Faithful.

DrJ

ccgirl, Dave-MA got it. The episode was "Wolf in the Fold."

Dave (in MA)

Also "Vinnie" in The Odd Couple movie and Mr. Peterson on the Bob Newhart Show.

CCGirl

Ha! That’s the guy!

bubarooni

"Quark the Ferengi"

It's always good business to know about new customers before they walk in your door. Location, location, location. A Ferengi chooses no side but his own. The justification for profit is profit.

Dave (in MA)

The other Trek guy mentioned back there was Roger C. Carmel, who was a tall bald guy. Neither guy's bio mentions spouses, IYKWIM.

DrJ

Dave-MA, let's not overlook Carmel's stellar role in that deep classic, "The Mothers-In-Law." :)

CCGirl

IYKWIM? Sorry not bothering to google what that means.

Dave-MA, let's not overlook Carmel's stellar role in that deep classic, "The Mothers-In-Law." :)
My wife tried watching an episode of that a while back and it was just as bad as I remembered. Carmel apparently quit that show over salary and was replaced by Richard "Mel Cooley" "Fred Rutherford" Deacon.
CCGirl

Thanks!

I watched Star Trek all the time as a kid. I remember being so excited when they had a movie, and then it was such a dud. But they improved after that.

When the new version came out my daughter fell in love with Chris Pine. I thought he did a good job playing Captain Kirk in his youth. Chris Pine claims he did not watch the early episodes. I find that hard to believe. He played a very good version of Kirk in the first new (whatever version of new) movie.

ABob, sorry to hear that. Youngest headed to Quincy tonight. I told her to stay out of Boston. She said she would. Husband and son asked why I would say that, and I replied , “Two weeks ago they went into Boston to Newberry St.” Their reply is “I didn’t know that.”

Anyway, I hope to God she and her friend stay close to home. But I have to let her live.

There’s an interesting podcast out talking about the NBA/Donaghy thing again. But it’s apparently is going to dive into allegations of NBA’s manipulation of game outcomes, and that Donaghy was far from the only referee manipulating games for gamblers.

Manuel Transmission

We’ve been watching a NOVA show from last November: The Violence Paradox. Amazingly prophetic because it builds a picture of the historical reduction of violence since the Middle Ages. Except of course, it knows not what we are living in in this moment. Lots of chances to yell at the screen, but it gives you clear stats good and bad. The worst, of course are the examples of gun confiscation in Australia, etc. All good. Pfft!

Anyway, some good documentation of how we got to the present and then the academicians step on their cranks, as you’d expect.

Narciso

If you excerpt the 100 million due to communism and another 40 million due to nazism not so much.

Joan Baez is still alive. Who knew...or cared?

I just wanna know which Fauci to trust; the one who says don't wear a mask or do.
The one who says it's just the flu or the one who says it's the new plague.

Contrast St Joan of Orc; "We can put our faith in science" with some guy, Feynman or something, "Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts."
'Faith in science' is an oxymoron from a non oxygenated one.
Skepticism of scientists and their work product is from one of the greatest scientists and minds of the last century. Who you gonna listen to?

I'm as usual very behind, but I wanted to throw in something about the question: "...those dead people stacked like cordwood in Italy -- was that all lies?"

You know how people talk about how wonderful government healthcare is, and how European countries spend half as much as the US and have just as good outcomes? Well that's bullshit -- one of the reasons that the US spends so much on healthcare is that we've got spare capacity for emergencies. Italy in particular a huge fraction of the nurses and aides in nursing homes were eastern European guest workers. As the country went into lockdown, the workers had to decide -- they could go home right away, or they could stay in Italy and not know when they would be able to leave. Lots of the quit and left the country, which made the staffing problems even more horrendous.

The first two places that the virus hit big time were China and Italy. Both socialist health care, and in socialism thinking outside the box is not exactly encouraged. So in both places they were fixated on ventilators, and nobody was going to buck the conventional wisdom that ARDS = ventilator. So, yeah, they killed lots of people.

So whenever somebody starts in on how the US wastes half of the HC dollars, remember that the "wasted" money was spent on "excess" hospital beds, staff, etc. All of those "wasted" resources got put to work in NY/NJ in March/April/May.

Narciso

And they had just forced out the leading opponent of statism in italian politics, to some degree

Asia stocks mixed; shares of SMIC in Hong Kong plummet as U.S.-China tech tensions rise

Hong Kong-listed shares of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), China’s largest manufacturer of semiconductors, plunged nearly 20% by the afternoon.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is considering imposing export restrictions on SMIC, according to a Defense Department spokesperson.
Data from China’s General Administration of Customs showed Monday that the country’s dollar-denominated exports rose 9.5% from a year ago while imports declined 2.1% in the same period.

Narciso

You mean import restrictions dont you.

jim nj

Narciso,

No. Export restrictions is correct. SMIC is dependent on machines, software and designs from the US and other EU countries when they create new chips.

They can produce existing chip designs until eternity. They can't create new designs without help.

A US company says that SMIC creates chips for the Chinese military. If so, that could block the transfer of dual-use technology.

To my mind, it's long overdue payback for their intellectual theft.

Barbara

Ignatz,

We hit 114° in So. Cal. today. Clouds rolled in about 5:30 pm. I'm praying for a good old on shore flow, but the prediction is for 100° tomorrow tapering off to the 90's the rest of the week.

Another Bob

Cathy, that was my question.

Here, it seemed that Italy and later NYC was being used as a rationale for the over the top reaction. And at the time, it appeared to me that this was a reasonable stance. But I started noting that we weren’t seeing any “inside the ICU” stories, from either place. (The ventilator thing I always saw as a Maguffin in the battle to pass the buck.)

I knew that in Europe generally the hospitals didn’t tend to be the sort of facilities we see here, and I had no idea about the guest worker situation you described. (Happily, I never had to spend any time in a hospital in my time in Europe.) So you’ve riddled that for me.

In NYC, from what I could tell the crisis seemed limited to a handful of hospitals.

Assuming we’re both correct, in neither case did we hear any even reasonably accurate story from the media. Would you agree?

Narciso

Ok that makes sense,

jim nj

narciso,

I think the basic idea moving forward is that China didn't play by the rules in developing much of its technology. Therefore we will change the rules and choke off as much of the present and future advances of Chinese technology as we can.

AB,

There was a story from about a month ago about how all the major hospital groups in Texas held daily conference calls after seeing that the NY hospitals didn't communicate with each other very well. They decided to put aside competition for cooperation.

cathyf

Hospital capacity is a political football. In Manhattan, there is a lot more capacity than in the outer boroughs, and so the outer boroughs had a much rougher time.

There seemed to be a lot of tunnel vision, too. Making room for the expected really really sick covid patients by -- totally nuts! -- evicting the covid patients already in the hospitals and sending them out to nursing homes to seed the infection widely in the most vulnerable population. Shutting down the schools and reopening them as daycares, because apparently learning causes the virus to be much more dangerous. Hysterically prohibiting everything in sight with total focus on what was being stopped, without a single thought to what people would be forced to do as substitutes. So they totally blew up supply chains, causing widespread shortages. The hordes of newly unemployed were forced to go from store to store looking for meat, milk, eggs, bread, yeast, flour, vegetables, and of course toilet paper. So they called it a "lockdown" and "stay at home" while actually forcing people out of their homes, forced to travel all over looking for supplies and spreading the virus as the went.

And we are still doing it. The utter freaking INSANITY of gathering in millions of college students to exchange germs, and then closing the colleges and evicting all of the students so that they were forced to go to their homes and take all of the newly-acquired germs with them and spread them widely and with lethal efficiency.

(And that's something that the president could have done something about! Issue an executive order saying that colleges could not evict their students in the middle of the pandemic as a public health issue!)

Near 285. South Cobb Drive is a mostly industrial area even though there is some rather stark housing nearby. From 285 at I-75 where the braves stadium now is going west south cobb is, IIRC, about the 4th exit. Just after going over chattahoochee river.
