My kitchen island is 18’ long with a 7 1/2’ wing at either end. One wing has the oven & stove, the other the sink. Storage under it all. Fridge, more storing and counter centered (Between windows) behind the wings. Works for me.

That said, I love a well organized work space, and the kitchen island vid had that in spades.

BeastsEngland

I really like the knife block that drops into the countertop. I’d have to have two or three of them, though! lol

henry

Beasts, yeah that drop down knife block is awesome. Something similar for spatulas, strainers, tenderizing mallets etc would be nice as well.

lyle

I don’t have a kitchen island but a heavy duty cart/cutting board (that I’ve never cut on) that is on casters. My cookware hangs on a stainless steel rack from the recessed ceiling above it. I have no refrigerator drawers or warmer drawers, either. But Shereen’s kitchen—assuming it’s adjacent to a wine room—is somewhere I’d love to cook in. 😎

henry

Well, it was on a beach just north of Kenosha... does SloJoe want it back?

https://www.fox6now.com/news/man-finds-apparent-brain-on-racine-beach-what-is-this

lyle

My knife block is mounted under an upper cabinet and rotates out. My kitchen is not nearly as big as the MILF’s.

(I denounce myself.)

henry

Lyle, tools on wheels. ;). I have a tool tray on rollers for garage projects that serves a similar function and my woodworking tools are all on rollers. Seems a great thing for any workspace so a rollout piece from beneath the counter would be very cool!

BeastsEngland

Good idea, henry! The older Beastette is doing a kitchen remodel for a client and is incorporating some of the bells and whistles shown in the video in her proposed layout.

A friend really did send me the following, with his observation:

New AF fighter jet--
https://www.defensenews.com/breaking-news/2020/09/15/the-us-air-force-has-built-and-flown-a-mysterious-full-scale-prototype-of-its-future-fighter-jet/?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=EBB%2009.16.20&utm_term=Editorial%20-%20Early%20Bird%20Brief

All of a sudden, the sloth of Fed.Govt is shown to be transformable across a wide range of capabilities….DOJ catches a bunch of perps and puts 'm in jail with large bails, for crimes committed last week….burning down a city (not Portland)….vaccines that used to take decades to develop come on line for testing and use within a single year….the USAF finds new ways to operate with new thinking of the kind you're used to seeing in private practice/ business, but not before in government. Arabs and Jews find some other way to live in the same place, setting aside some problems for later solution and doing what they can to save themselves as WE pull thousands of troops home, and making their futures their business. Eureka! They can do it!!!

Somebody's unleashed a lot of normal creativity present in lots of smart guys without micromanaging their lives….somebody did this.

Who? Hint….Not Joe Biden….or ANY NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED DEMOCRAT POLITICIAN.

lyle

Sorry for the extreme weather down south. Having said that, I’d kill to have some wind to clear out the effing smoke here. Gah.

henry

I’m delighted with the weather here. I fear Gaia will get even later. If you don’t mind training up sled dogs (and packing sleds with beer or higher octane), I will be most grateful when the glaciers return this winter.

The fires out west and the full storm pattern in the Atlantic are causes for concern. Hope all JOM & extended families plus everyone else in the paths are safe.

henry

Miss M, the Chinese branding is more interesting. My guess is a pig brain. Similar enough. But why on a Lake Michigan beach? (We had good wind and storms over the weekend).

MissMarple2

anonamom,

I cannot tell you how many years I wanted someone in the White House running things like my dad ran his maintenance department.

Voila! Enter the Orange Man. I swear he is just like my dad except for the height and the Queens accent. Still think my dad would have been a fan.

lyle

Quite high-minded of you, Beasts. 😎

Now off to prep my chicken parm. Cheers!

MissMarple2

That Chinese writing is interesting, isn't it?

Teddy update: the nutting went fine but I think he was in quite a bit of pain yesterday and coming out of the anaesthetic didn't make him the most cooperative dog in terms of wearing a cone. So we let him sleep without it and he made it through the night ok. All day today he's been wearing it with no problem and even seems to like sleeping in it. He's just as active on walks so I think everything went well.

CH - Glad to hear Teddy is doing well. Once his hormones settle down, I wonder if you'll see any difference in his personality.

Beasts - Loved that kitchen island video. I find many people with those types of kitchens do not actually cook. (My sister-in-law is an example.) It sounds like Shereen really does and puts a lot of thought into every inch of space. My favorite thing was the knife block followed by the spice drawer. Do you think a new jar of any type of spice would completely fit into one of those containers? (I wonder where she keeps the rest...)

lyle

I find many people with those types of kitchens do not actually cook.

Ding ding!

Captain Hate

Momto2,

According to Teddy's breeder it should add an off switch which he's been lacking. Every time he meets another male, particularly an unneutered one, the on switch gets activated and his tail nearly arches against his back. Even if they play, the tail stays arched and his body usually quivers if he's dealing with another alpha. This should get him to relax more.

Is anyone else taking Hillsdale's Constitutional 101 course starting tomorrow?

rse

I always create a cook's kitchen which my children regard as the most used room in the house.

It has been interesting to replace stuff as the original applainces went out 20 or so years out (and still going in some cases). Have a spice drawer (spice island does not fit like mccormick). Let the original cook top get down to 2 burners before replacing and then we were back to 5 with continuous grates and it was almost magical in a busy cooking household.

Have learned with the replacement ovens that a good double oven holds temps well enough to function as a warming drawer.

I think I have joked here before about daughters going to cook at friends' places and coming back home horrified by electric as they simply took gas for granted.

Ralph L

Twenty years ago, I had wide, deep drawers built instead of base cabinets for my island and under the stovetop. I've finally seen some in house porn in the last few years. Raising the counter (and dishwasher) a few inches above standard 36" is also good for tall people (only good idea of the late step-monster).

Narciso

clarice

I hate Shereen. All those fitted drawers are ok if you have vast storage space elsewhere.I have a huge pantry off the kitchen and an adjoining big rack in the garage. If you don't have storage space elsewhere fitted drawers have to be a headache.

Another thing I can't abide--crystal chandeliers in kitchens.

anonamom

rse--was that a Thermador cook top that got down to two burners, by chance?
Mine is two burners that either full blast or off---which I pretend is like an AGA, right? And then two that still function, except for the medium high setting on one. But who needs that?
It's been this way for five or more years--can't replace the cast iron burners--and I'm fine with it. Because of the incompatability of the existing exhaust with the newer Thermadors, it is multiple thousands of dollars to replace. Crazy.

Porchlight

I am really interested to see what kind of a crimp that Covid puts on California vote-harvesting, since they can't go into nursing homes to harvest votes and they so far have not been going door-to-door

Great catch John S.

I'm also interested in the impact of college kids being mostly home with their parents. No way are the usual Dem whipping practices going to be as effective as usual.

I say that from the perspective of having worked in a building that was a voting location in 2018 and delivered a shit ton of votes to Beto. I watched the whippers in action. Our building will not be a voting location this November. It's been moved about eight blocks away and that might as well be eighty miles for the students actually on campus this fall.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--Hopefully all the smoky areas are about to experience something similar!--

A little better here too, but the Sierras were unbearable today. Quarter to half mile visibility. Was so bad on the way home almost had to pull over, my eyes were stinging and watering so much.
On top of that skunked on my annual pine nut harvest.

Preach it, sister.

anonamom

Since we are talking kitchens--anybody use an air fryer?
If so, what do you like using for?

Porchlight

But wouldn’t you know, the university presidents ended up following right along, giving Trump exactly what he wanted.

Well, aside from the obvious fact that Trump is with the people, this is what fans, athletes and their parents wanted as well.

Big Ten didn't cave because of Trump. They caved because of people who matter. And who also vote.

Now it would be nice if the university presidents would cave on the rest of the BS.

Porchlight

The air fryer, henry, from what I understand, does all that but in a compact space, so it saves energy/time, doesn't heat up kitchen, etc.

For many of the same purposes I use a nonstick pan with a cover on my gas rangetop to create a little oven. Great for reheating pizza, fries, anything else that you want to heat and crisp up at the same time.

Porchlight

Warming drawers: almost all of us have them underneath the oven, but we use them for keeping our cookie sheets and broiler pan.

Which is what I thought the drawer was for until I saw this little video my kids showed me about stuff you didn't know you were supposed to know.

henry

ThanksPorch. Makes sense. What is that drawer for?

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

This will only matter to me I suppose, but I didn't realize this fire had sneaked up on my old stomping grounds. The SQF Complex.
The last good sized property I logged personally is only about a mile from the edge of this fire. Camp Nelson a pretty little mountain community is right on the edge of it and there are many large groves of giant Sequoias both in and out of the NP that are either burnt or threatened.
And talk about rough; steepest property I ever logged with massive canyons and steep, steep mountains.

matt - deplore me if you must

That kitchen is way over the top. I wonder if it ever really gets used. We had a lot of very high end kitchens in Newport. All the toys. And almost none of there were ever used.

If I do win the lottery I would build my own working kitchen. Plenty of prep and layout space, Industrial grade range and devices. Nothing fancy but very functional. Easy to clean.

Mine is a 1931 with no real space but I did find a wonderful rolling prep table/cutting board. It helps tremendously.

Am already planning Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners. Would love to find some bison or elk to mix things up a bit.

HMart for the veggies and some hors d'oeurvres and we have some great specialty markets; Middle Eastern, Japanese, Latino.

Half the fun is looking at what's available/in season and going hmmmm.

MM, I think electric ovens are preferable for most purposes. But I need a gas cooktop and haven’t had one since I was a kid.

Finally broke down and got one of those canned butane burners. (We took a cooking class and that’s what the chef brought to use.) Bring it out of the closet when high heat or finer control is needed.

Electric ovens are great but I love love love my gas cooktop. Although proper heat adjustment has always been my weakness as a cook. I just can't get it right. Almost always too high or too low. I started boiling rice like pasta (which is a GREAT way to cook rice) because I could never get it right when I tried to steam it.

I saw on the kitchen video she had a black granite counter around the walls but no under-counter lights. Even though she seems to do her primary work on the island, that would definitely be something I would have planned in.
