LOL @ Gates. He needs a time machine back to when Big Blew thought all the money was in hardware and start modifying all subsequent behavior.

I am still up, so posting again.

I am angry about everything. All of it. I am fed up with the teachers unions. My daughter (who is not allowed on campus) had a birthday dinner with the boyfriend’s mother (boyfriend is at college - and works for me 😁) and she teaches in a local school. Most of the teachers hate the crap they must put up with. Many need to bring home the money, and so it’s hard to speak up.
I hate the unions for doing this to the kids. I just hate it all. It makes me feel so sad.

Narciso

But wait if there werent so many people his finances wouldnt be as yuge would they. But redstone is he dead? Turner buffett are on that kick. Couldnt we have a mogul who appreciates people, wait theres one.

DrJ, I wasn't challenging you, nor was I intending to be rude to you at all. Yes Sir, I am entitled to my opinion. And of course, you are too.

DrJ

AB,

Again, my experience with with upper-mid level people on down. The government people I've met who work at NIH and NSF have played it very straight financially, to the point where I could not even buy a Program Director a lunch or a beer.

Graft opportunities likely exist at the highest levels, but I simply have no experience with this. This is a foreign world to me.

GUS

DrJ. You are a good man. No doubt about it. God bless you sir.

Now that I am here. ABob, those videos are messed up. I think James Woods posted the second one, and we saw it here because maybe miss m posted it last week. Anyway, awful.

On his Saturday morning show on FNC, Neil Cavuto let it rip against the reporters at the press conference Friday with Biden. This is unusual because Cavuto is no fan of President Trump and also he rarely criticizes reporters. So, when he spoke out about the utter lack of professionalism on display Friday, it was noteworthy. If the Trump-bashing press has lost Neil Cavuto…

Ccgirl, yeah the second one has been around for a while. The first one was new to me.

They’re just demonstrating what real life can look like and why cops behave the way they do. I’ve just lost all patience with the idiocy: “Why not shoot him in the leg”, “the cops are hunting people down and doing murders”.

I can think of a handful of cases where I saw/read of a police shooting and thought it was wrong, but those are very few and far between. Police are human, therefore not perfect. But except for a vanishingly small number of cases, don't break the law, do what a cop tells you even if you think the cop is wrong, and you’ll never have to worry about being killed by the police.

Great grasp of the obvious, I realize. And boy did I laugh at the Chris Rock bit on the subject.

jim nj

I was trying to make a point last night and I think I wasn't clear enough.

Antifa and BLM are said to be decentralized. That there is no central direction of all of these various activities. I think in broad terms that is silly. There are various handbooks out there. Yet when you get down to smaller groups or individuals that may be true. Some of the protest activities strike me as nonsensical. Like a smarter leadership would ban or disassociate from the stupider actions.

Harassing outdoor diners for not raising their fists. Invading a Rochester restaurant and tossing tables, chairs and scaring the crap out of customers. Stalking and killing a man in Portland for wearing the wrong hat.

It's one thing to protest, seeking sympathy for the cause, rioting isn't going to accomplish that. It's more likely to create a backlash. The up close and personal intimidation tactics are more likely to spark a gun purchase than to change someone's mind.

These mobs may have sponsors, tactics and goals, but some of the mob members are nuts. I mean certifiably so. Put these people in a mob and there is no reason that they can't pull a mob into unreasoned actions.

And then throw in the non-ideological opportunists who seek out the cover of these mob actions for criminal reasons.

I don't see these people rallying the electorate to their side.

Another Bob

“I don't see these people rallying the electorate to their side.”

Nor do I jim, but I’m not sure that’s their goal.

Narciso

They practice leaderless resistance but only up to a point, they arent given a specific target but broad parameters. The funding channel is rather symmetricalm

Narciso

Holy mos eiseley, talk about a hive of scum and villainy, no need to put quotes

jim nj

The protests seem to have gained a life of their own. Oh, I don't mean the ridiculous organized street theater in Seattle and Portland that could be easily put down if the local Democrats so wished. I mean the "spontaneous" demonstrations that occur elsewhere with majority white participation.

"Silence is violence," stalking mobs that are mostly white and believe they have enrolled in the righteous cause.

And Rochester. How many black brain-damaged drug addicts are out there running around doing stupid things that attract police interventions? That was months ago. Roll it out for a new riot?

Another Bob

The shot-callers behind the scenes may have some more conventional aims, but the street mobs are mere shock troops. A number of them may have their own aims, but they’ll always be secondary. I think they’ve been tasked to create as much chaos as they think they can get away with.

Narciso

Common sense, really sometime around ferguson they decided to encourage reprobates that their actions are justifiable.

Narciso

Thats what i mean by broad parameters they test the limits of what they can get away with.

jim nj

AB and narciso,

I don't recognize their goal either. I realize that there are "central" organizations and money is available to them, but I think the "crazies" are taking over.

Entropy, if you will.

Back in the sixties the huge anti-war marches enlisted parade marshals that were trained to keep the marchers under control. IMHO, these protests are anarchic. They don't even listen to their masters once they've been loosed.

Another Bob

Make the simplest parts of normie’s life difficult and complicated. Block their roads, wreck their jobs

In that sense, I’m having a hard time not connecting this with the mask nonsense and seemingly arbitrary and capricious restrictions like Whitmer’s ban on seed sales.

Another Bob

Get normies sick of it all and clamoring for change. I can’t see their having Biden representing that change though. I can see the shot-callers liking Biden as hand him a few bucks and he’ll be happy to be the Potemkin President.

jim nj

" I think they’ve been tasked to create as much chaos as they think they can get away with."

Yes, in Seattle, Portland and some other places it's kabuki theater. Both sides have established rules of engagement. If the rules aren't broached the local Democrat mayor allows the party to continue.

Another Bob

Has anyone done any serious looking-into Jill Biden’s connections?

Unless Joe Hiden is doing a Chin Gigante number, he’s in a bad way. But the loving wife doesn’t remove him from this and save him from further embarrassment? Pretty sure that’s what mine would do.

GUS

Don't over think it. bLM, is no one. 2 COMMIE BROADS raking in HUNDREDS of MILLIONS. Tons of street losers making noise, so that the 2 COMMIE BINTS, get to be little ZUCKERBERGS.
Antifa, is SOROS and his pals. DIRTY STINKY, SMELLY PUNKS, who act and create havoc, at the drop of a hat. STINK, DIRT, SMELL, FILTH.....REPEAT.

Another Bob

jim nj

AB,

It does seem to be all of one piece directed at undermining Trump. What can't be accomplished with harsh legal diktats we'll leave to the Democrat "shock troops" to create even more disruption.

Two Marxist organizations seem to be working at cross-purposes. A non-violent BLM idea, not the organization, might have gained some traction, even though it's racist not to include all lives, but the Antifa violence has tainted BLM, the idea, and more particularly BLM, the organization.

I'm also thinking with so many "independent" groups focused on taking down Trump that they are going to step on each other's strategies.

I'm anticipating poorly sourced, near daily, "whack-a-mole" Trump "scandals" for the next 60 days.

I expect the press, both print and broadcast, are going to wind up looking about as credible as BLM and Antifa.

jim nj

"I’m convinced Wheeler is in on it. Maybe Durkin too."

I Agree. They thought they were helping the cause of ridding themselves of Trump. Riding the vanguard of a movement.

Trump is so bad that we can't reasonably control all the anger. I think the mayors now realize that they sacrificed their cities, that the movement has even turned against them, for no good end-result.

They're locked into a failing strategy.

https://spectator.org/the-inevitable-implosion-of-bidens-campaign/

The Inevitable Implosion of Biden’s Campaign
It is doomed by a strategy based on a progressive myth about Trump’s base.

"However, the campaign’s fatal flaw is more subtle than Biden’s tacit approval of mob violence. It is rooted in the classism that resulted in his nomination to be the Democratic standard bearer. Among the progressives who control the party it’s an article of faith that President Trump’s base consists of undereducated working-class whites. Thus, they reluctantly supported Biden’s nomination in the hope that “working class Joe” could peel off enough of Trump’s benighted blue collar support to capture the White House."

I think one of the problems with this strategy is that many, college-educated, white-collar workers self-identify as blue-collar. They don't feel entitled, they feel lucky, I spent some time to get a degree, but some H-1B could steal my job.

For those calling for an abolition of CRT in education, sometimes it comes in via lectures from people like this as my alma mater is doing in about two weeks along with training for ALL students.

Ibram X. Kendi's concept of antiracism reenergizes and reshapes the conversation about racial justice in America--but even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. Instead of working with the policies and system we have in place, Kendi asks us to think about what an antiracist society might look like, and how we can play an active role in building it.

In his memoir, Kendi weaves together an electrifying combination of ethics, history, law, and science--including the story of his own awakening to antiracism--bringing it all together in a cogent, accessible form. He begins by helping us rethink our most deeply held, if implicit, beliefs and our most intimate personal relationships (including beliefs about race and IQ and interracial social relations) and reexamines the policies and larger social arrangements we support. How to Be an Antiracist promises to become an essential book for anyone who wants to go beyond an awareness of racism to the next step of contributing to the formation of a truly just and equitable society.

The accreditors have also been requiring this for at least 10 years in higher ed.

In K-12 it is hiding under what is billed as "culturally relevant education" to foster resilience. I watched a webinar funded by casey F this summer involving this center https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/metrocenter/about

Basically the calls for Equity require a completely different approach to education. Unfortunately it's the same approach Betsy devos called for this week in her statement on states not getting test waivers again when she called on them to focus on alternative assessments that looked for 'competency' or 'mastery' proof as performance a/k/a behavior, not knowledge.

rse

I think crt and programs like Facing History and Ourselves that the obamas were involved, should be understood via this orwell quote--

From the totalitarian point of view history is something to be created rather than learned. A totalitarian state is in effect a theocracy, and its ruling caste, in order to keep its position, has to be thought of as infallible. But since, in practice, no one is infallible, it is frequently necessary to rearrange past events in order to show that this or that mistake was not made, or that this or that imaginary triumph actually happened. Then again, every major change in policy demands a corresponding change of doctrine and a revelation of prominent historical figures. This kind of thing happens everywhere, but is clearly likelier to lead to outright falsification in societies where only one opinion is permissible at any given moment. Totalitarianism demands, in fact, the continuous alteration of the past, and in the long run probably demands a disbelief in the very existence of objective truth.

For OL & others--

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. With influenza, Dr Fauci, the CDC, his co-authors, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the National Institutes of Health and the New England Journal of Medicine got case fatality rate and infection fatality rate mixed up with influenza. Easy mistake to make. Could have done it myself. But didn’t.

You want to know where Imperial College London really got their 1% infection fatality rate figure from? It seems clear that they got it from Anthony S Fauci and the New England Journal of Medicine. The highest impact journal in the world – which should have the highest impact proof-readers in the world. But clearly does not.

Imperial College then used this wrong NEJM influenza case fatality rate 0.1%. It seems that they then compared this 0.1% figure to the reported COVID case fatality rate, estimated to be 1% and multiplied the impact of COVID by ten – as you would. As you probably should.

So, we got Lockdown. The US used the Fauci figure and got locked down. The world used that figure and got locked down.

That figure just happens to be ten times too high.

I know it is going to be virtually impossible to walk the world back from having made such a ridiculous, stupid, mistake. There are so many reputations at stake. The entire egg production of the world will be required to supply enough yolk to cover appropriate faces.

Rse’s link is dynamite.

“A symptomless, or even mildly symptomatic positive swab is not a case. Never, in recorded history, has this been true. However, now we have an almost unquestioned acceptance that a positive swab represents a case of COVID. This is then parroted on all the news channels as if it were gospel.”

Been my complaint from the beginning - what’s a “case”.

Another Bob

And...

“At this point, you may well be asking. Why the hell did we lockdown if COVID was believed to be no more serious than influenza? Right from the start by the most influential infectious disease organisations in the World.

It is because of the mad mathematical modellers. The academic epidemiologists. Neil Ferguson, and others of his ilk. When they were guessing (sorry estimating, sorry modelling) the impact of COVID they used a figure of approximately one per cent as the infection fatality rate. Not the case fatality rate. In so doing, they overestimated the likely impact of COVID by, at the very least, ten-fold.

How could this possibly have happened?

When they put their carefully constructed model together on the 16th of March, if they had been reading the research, they must have been aware that they were looking at a maximum case fatality rate of just over 1% in China, right at the start, where the figures are always at their highest.

Which means that, unless COVID was going to turn out nearly 100% fatal, we could never get anywhere near 1%, for the infection fatality rate. Even Ebola only kills 50%.

But they went with it, they went with 1%. Actually, Imperial College reduced it slightly to 0.9%, for reasons that are opaque.

From this, all else flowed.”

I've been thinking about this and I do think it boils down to the respect that people have for physicians and what it takes to build that wealth of knowledge to treat people and make them well. I think Trump relied on a deep-seated appreciation for the medical field and assumed that they would put protecting lives ahead of politics, just as my district assumed that teachers would put students' needs ahead of their own fears.

Regarding Trump falling for the Fauci scaremongering:

Unbeknownst to me, Fauci had built himself quite a fan base (or co-conspirators) within academia, upper levels of the medical bureaucracy, the international health organizations, etc., etc.(I only found this out when a couple of retired nurse friends of mine went on and on about how well respected he was.)

So, when this guy came on the scene to President Trump crying that "The sky is falling!" supplemented by certain international intelligence reports and compromised people in our own intelligence agencies, how was he to know?
Who was he to call for outside advice? The New England Journal of Medicine? Ha!

And at the same time, he was dealing with impeachment.

This is why I don't try to make too much out of things like the post I made about Skybridge and Scaramucci getting canned. WAS that a serious thing to be concerned about? Was it a pay-off to Mooch for collecting some information or trying to push Trump in a certain direction? Wise words, wise words indeed. Words that were written by one Anthony S Fauci on the 28th of February 2020. If you haven’t heard of him, look him up.

Critically though, eleven days after this, he rather blotted his copybook, because he went on to say this “The flu has a mortality rate of 0.1 percent. This (COVID) has a mortality rate of 10 times that. That’s the reason I want to emphasize we have to stay ahead of the game in preventing this.” 5

The mortality rate Dr Fauci? Could it possibly be that he failed to understand that there is no such thing as a mortality rate? Did he mean the case fatality rate, or the infection fatality rate? If he meant the Infection mortality rate of influenza, he was pretty much bang on. If he meant the case fatality rate, he was wrong by a factor of ten.

The reality is that, no matter what Fauci went on to say, severe influenza has a case fatality rate of 1%, and so does COVID. They also have approximately the same infection fatality fate of 0.1%.

It seems that Dr Fauci just got mixed up with the terminology. Because in his Journal article eleven days earlier, he did state… ‘This suggests that the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza… [and here is the kicker at the end] (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%).’

You see, he did say the case fatality rate of influenza was approximately 0.1%. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong… wrong.

How could Fauci go from one to the other in eleven days? There was no great revelation in that time period.
I'm sure many will ascribe nefarious political motives and they may be right. But we are always and everywhere governed by dumbshits. We must never forget that eternal truth.

rich

let us not forget that the clergy rendered unto caesar and the courts for the most part have bought into this wholesale. let us also not forget that much of the world starting shutting down in ever more bizarre lockdowns.

it was far more than fauci and a model overestimating things by 10X (decimal lives matter!!!) though that didn't help.

Iggy-

Don't forget both fauci and the imperial war college are beneficiaries of Bill Gates' Grand Challenges largesse.

And John Lewis's McCain length funeral.

And I have confirmed the doc's math for flu CFR and IFR at the CDC site.

One thing on that video I learned was a bunch of Chinese in some sort of official thing getting kicked out of Houston because of stealing intellectual property, especially medical and biological research.

Maybe matt in Houston knows about that.

TK,

Remember when Agricultural Secretary Sonny Perdue decentralized the Ag Department to different parts of the country and there was a great deal of whining about that in the press and all over DC? Why was that done and other than being out of the cocktail party circuit, what were the agency employee objections?

ASW "I agree with Mrs OL starvation is not a joking matter."

You understand that my line was a humorous approach to a fundamental problem society has to deal with if the greatest number of people are to achieve the greatest level of happiness, right?

I would agree with you that what we are doing to destroy individuals and their characters by depriving them of their ability to think and fend for themselves is no joking matter.

Except Sweden, rich; who'd a thunk they, who regularly get everything else wrong, would be the outlying smarty pants.

One can go from scientist to despot in the blink of an eye once you see that your eureka discovery can be used for benign purposes. He might have started on day one as the former, but when the potential to achieve Prog Heaven was recognized, off he and all his gang went. Poof. The scientist become the despot.

A-Bob, I too have been vociferous about the definition of a "case" and even what that means.

Which is why, in every AP article about "new cases" I insert something on the order of "case counts do not indicate severity of illness, potential for hospitalization, or possibility of death."

Boy there is a nasty fire northeast of Fresno. Started the evening of the 4th and is already 30,000 acres with 0% containment.
In a lightly visited, heavily forested, deeply canyoned and rugged part of the Sierra between Yosemite and Kings Canyon NPs. I'm very familiar with it having spent a lot of time looking at timber properties down there. I'm not sure where the logical stopping points are.
View of it from Shaver Lake the only popular spot in the area. That is the smoke signature of an explosively hot fire.
