Between COVID and wildfires, if this was a fight the ref would stop it. I'm puzzling over the residential real estate model for San Francisco: a bunch of people earning lots of money from companies that are urging them to work remotely are paying outlandish rent to live in a city that has gruesome air quality each summer and a year-round homeless challenge. Sustainable?

New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, KC, Rochester; why would anyone want to live there now?
The restaurants and attractions are closed, shopping is on line, rents are exorbitant, and there are plenty of people who want to steal your stuff, burn you down, and call you names while doing it.
So what's the upside?

My niece’s monthly rent for a single room apartment in SF is triple my former mortgage payment here on the farm. So many have left SF to work from their parents home (including her), residential rentals are in for a huge drop in price. Her prior landlord offered a two bedroom unit at a lower rate, not low enough yet. Fine economics lesson there.

Good afternoon! Hubby just found out today that the son and family of college friends will be leaving San Francisco and return to Maine to will work remotely. That is VERY remote! They are so excited that their grandchildren will be in Maine.
I've mentioned 9/11 in previous years. The daughter had been working in D.C. two years. If you recall the staffers leaving the Capitol Hill office buildings, imagine our distress. When she finally returned to her Arlington apartment later that evening,we were so relieved. About a month later, we drove my mother-in-law back to Florida from Maine. My father-in-law died in Feb.'01, so the year started out really bad. Every bridge, overpass and some billboards between Maine and Florida were covered with flags and banners. That is an image that will always stay with me.

19 years ago today...
I was on my way to work driving thru sw Indiana listening to the 'Bob and Tom Show' on the radio. MM will know what that is...
They said something akin to 'Oh dang. We have reports that someone has run an airplane into one of the World Trade Towers. We'll update as we learn more.'
I too remember it as an absolutely stunning blue sky with no humidity in sw Indiana.
A bit later I'm in the pharmacy to work on a printer and all are crowded around a small black and white tv watching the live news, including me.
All of a sudden I see tons of smoke on one of the buildings but can't process what I'm seeing.
Someone says 'It's falling!'
I remember suddenly understanding what was going on, like someone punched me, feeling numb and muttering 'There could be 5000 people in that building...'
Details kept flooding in as the day wore on.
I remember driving home that night listening to coverage on NPR and listening to all the congress critters singing 'God Bless America' (???) and crying.
I called my twin bro that evening to get his take. He worked in D.C. and was in a conference room on something like the 10th story of a building and saw a flash. Turned around to look out the window and saw a plume rising from the Pentagon and thought 'bin Laden'.
He had to walk back to Georgetown after retrieving his gf at her work. He said 'there were guys in BDU's and M-16's all the way home while F-16's buzzed overhead.'
I can also remember some days later sitting at my Dad's house with my other brother and George Bush delivering the line:
'Whether we bring our enemies to justice or bring justice to our enemies, justice will be done.'
My Dad, a Lifer, looked at my bro. My bro was a O-4 in the Indiana National Guard. My bro said 'We're going to war.'
He went on to serve 2 18 month tours in Iraq and retired an O-6.
Got his bell rung good in an M-2/IED incident, got 90% disability and his kids all went to I.U. free.
I'm still jealous he didn't have to pay all the tuition I've been paying but, I'm glad I didn't get my bell rung.
As I was trying to catch up I noticed that MM has recently turned 29 again. Belated happy bday MM.

Well they re market is on fire on the Cape. And people are staying here, instead of leaving to their winter homes, if possible. Leading indicator for me is that my gross sales for the first 10 days of Sept are up 49% over last year! That's a lot of nuts and bolts and paint! Anyway - no wonder I am drinking like a fish and worn out!
A funny - Customer kept complaining that his fruit fly trap didn't catch the flies. They just fly around near it. He kept going on. I asked if he wanted a refund - happy to give him back his money. Oh no - just kept going on. Last customer of the day. I finally said as I was at a loss for words, "Well, you must have some very smart fruit flies in your house!" SIL was dying.
Maybe you had to be there! Retail humor. I'm off - pizza on the grill tonight!

Well NC is pretty nice these days. I wear a mask on my arm just in case anyone asks me to put it on, which I would gladly do, but no one has.
You can tell which places are likely to have more mask wearers. I went to Harbor Freight today and guessed that nobody would be wearing one there, but I did see an old guy with a mask. Went to Hardee's for breakfast the other morning and not one person had a mask except for the workers. (Everyplace requires their workers to wear them, with many workers using them as chinstraps.) Grocery stores and Lowe's are about 50% mask wearers. Homegoods and Walmart have greeters making sure people are wearing masks, and these places can be easily avoided.
There's indoor dining here, including at bars, and not the every other table b.s., either. I've met strangers and shaken hands with them. Fauci may be talking about other places, but I think they'll be back to normal here before the year is out, regardless of who wins in November.
Speaking of which, on my waterfront road of mostly nice houses, there are multiple Trump signs and one guy with a giant Trump flag. Within the past couple of days I've seen two houses sprout Roy Cooper signs (Dem governor who's probably in trouble for November), and neither of those houses have Biden signs. I don't think I've seen a Biden sign anywhere in fact. :-)

MM, driving down I-69 from Bloomington to Washington everyday there is a pretty good sized 'Biden' sign.
It's probably 8'x4' and and 10' or 12' tall so it's very conspicuous.
I've been toying with idea of spray painting 'is senile!' on an old bed sheet, stopping along the highway, running up the hill, jumping the fence and tying, stapling it or whatever right below it.
Keep on eye on the local Indy stations!

mike in houston,
I saw that live, because I was still at home by myself. I cried, because "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" was an anthem that my 8th grade choir learned by heart, and which I can still sing the choral parts to this day. To see Margaret Thatcher singing it was immensely moving to me. And to see that huge congregation in St. Paul's Cathedral was overwhelming.

I knew my marriage was truly over when I found the rattlesnake at the foot of my bed one April Sunday night"

Well, Matt, I did find a (live!) rattlesnake in my car once. Should I mention that is was involved with legal disputes at the time?

My encounters with rattlers are too numerous to recount but the closest I’ve come to one in an abode was in Stanley, ID and the sumbitch was sunning himself on the front porch of a cabin where I damn near inadvertently stepped on him. Nota bene: their jaws keep snapping even after decapitation...

I’d read on, Matt. After spotting a loaded 12 gauge in reach of my bed.
