JMH, in my adult lifetime the decline can be measured by my own MBA circa 1972 when we were taught how to best manage firms that were owned by Shareholders so that the returns to those owners would be maximized over the long term.

But in the end my Eeyore view of the rapid decline in previously very stable institutions overcame any sense of charity I might have felt.
