I have a hard time seeing the Times story about Trump's taxes changing any minds. Jim Geraghty notes an unsurprising gap between Trump's rhetoric and behavior. More shoulder shrugging from Reason - active real estate investors get plenty of tax breaks.
Whatever. It saves the media from wondering why the FBI relied on a possible Russian agent for the FISA requests backed by the Steele dossier.
Interestingly, Mr. Danchenko co-authored a paper with Fiiona Hill, a star of the Trump Impeachment Show.
Ms. Hill went on to join President Trump’s National Security Council staff as a senior European specialist in 2017. She also testified at his House impeachment hearing. She said she believed Mr. Steele, with whom she once worked while he was a British intelligence officer, was played by Russian disinformation.
Steele, duped?

U.S. District Judge Michael Watson wrote that while Ohio’s signature-matching requirements impose a “moderate" burden on voters, they have other options to cast a ballot if their vote is improperly rejected, including casting a provisional ballot on Election Day. He agreed with Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose that the state has a legitimate interest in promoting an orderly and secure election, justifying that burden.

Funny how most tweets claim Trump (or his organization) paid $750 in “federal taxes”. Federal taxes include employer wage taxes, employer share of social security and Medicare, federal unemployment tax... which are the big piece if you have employees. Some firms pay federal excise taxes as well. These taxes are paid whether or not the firm makes money. Income tax is over and above that.
Posted by: henry | September 28, 2020 at 03:04 PM
$750 figure was the additional owed on top of multiple million $$ tax payments already paid.

The NYT article's treatment of the 2016-2017 Trump federal income taxes doesn't seem to be accurately summarized by Alex the Chick. Trump's liability for those two years according to the NY Times article is $750 each year. Trump was able to roll his estimated tax payments into future years because the actual liability for those two years is so small. Thus, Trump didn't end up paying seven figures for those two years. Without the reduction in tax liability due to Trump's use of the tax credit, Trump wouldn't have been able to apply the estimated tax payments to future years.
Posted by: Thomas Collins | September 28, 2020 at 04:01 PM

The explanations on the previous thread still don't make a lot of sense to me. His accountants surely knew his level of available tax credits. There are lines right on the estimated tax form to deduct any available credits from estimated tax liability.
Perhaps my opinion would be different if I were a billionaire but if my actual tax liability was $750 but he asked me to write a check out for $4.2 million I'd find a new accountant.
Moreover if you pay approximately [90%?] what you paid the year before, you avoid the underpayment penalty, so paying $4.2 million when the prior year's liability was $750 makes no sense not only because they knew he was carrying credits forward over twice what he paid in but he wasn't subject to underpayment penalty anyway.
Makes no sense to me.

The “Good News” is, Mr Trump, if you give Pope Francis a little taste, you can still go to Heaven:
Pope called tax evasion a “structure of sin;” in recent interview, the pontiff said: “It has become evident that those who do not pay their taxes are not only committing a crime, but murder: if there are not enough hospital beds or respirators, they too are partly to blame.”

I doubt GentleJim would tackle him right away. I don’t know what the rules are.
I see Parscale with beer, cooperating then one cop went mental. I don’t understand the “get on the ground” order crap, especially when the cop that said that was already running to tackle the guy.
Glad I’m not a cop.

Posted by: Pinandpuller | September 28, 2020 at 04:28 PM
I was going to make a comment similar to TC’s. I don’t think the $750 was in addition to the $1M in 2016 and $4.2M in 2017. It was his actual liability. Those larger amounts were just overpayments that he got credits for.
Not that any of this matters. Besides henry’s point that he likely paid $millions in other taxes, there’s no crime or even misdeed alleged, and the NYT story seems like it could have been written by a middle school student. Zero understanding of the real estate business or tax system.
Sorry about your cat, DrJ.

The Infamous Ignatz, there could be several explanations. One might be that the amount of the credits could have been in question. For example, if the credits depended on the placed in service date, perhaps that date (or dates, if more than one lot of facilities was involved) was uncertain when Trump made the payments. Perhaps other aspects of the 2016 and 2017 taxable years reduced Trump's tax liabilities but weren't covered by the NYT article. I suspect Trump's tax picture is complicated enough that the accountants might well have been correct if they were advising Trump to make seven figure estimated tax payments, even if ultimately the tax liability was reduced almost to zero.
Posted by: Thomas Collins | September 28, 2020 at 04:42 PM
Ig @ 4:18
My take on the whole story is, I don't care about the explanations, because it's all bullshit from word one.
Trump has been on the Dem enemies list ever since he questioned Obama's birth certificate. If the 100% progressive Democrat IRS couldn't nail him with anything in the 12+ years since then despite clearly trying to, then there's nothing there and it's not worth one minute of any sane person's time to analyze it further.
Posted by: James D. | September 28, 2020 at 04:42 PM
I'm sure DJT's tax returns have been scrutinized intensely by the IRS like anyone with multiple businesses.
That's where the nonsense hits the road every time with these tax return stories - there's a dedicated body of not-very-forgiving folks who tear apart every Trump return (they're all audited). And if Trump pays nothing or little (which isn't even the case), it's because his accountants were legally able to make that happen. Talk about a non-story.

My only experience with the Parscale issue is having called 911 when my own son was walking down the street buck nekkid trying to find a cop to confess all his horrendous crimes to [none of which actually happened].
The cop calmly and politely asked him to put some clothes on and reasoned with him [as did I] until he finally complied. Then they cuffed him [I think] mostly for his own protection, put him in the car and took him over to the ER for an evaluation.
Nobody tackled him or demanded he drop to the ground etc, even though they knew he has mental issues and he was far less calm and reasonable than Parscale.

I said my piece about why larger tax payments than ultimately owed might be made in the course of the year...pretty much along the lines of TC above. A (the?) leading cause of personal returns by RE guys being extended is that the owner's bill has to await the final returns of all of his the other entities. So counting on a credit before it is hatched has some risk.
Another thing that enters the thought process is that to normal people, tax returns/payments are "events", but to RE tycoons they are simply one frame in a long stream of tax strategy with a lot of interconnected moving parts and timing. None of it is black and white.
I am in a completely different league compared to Trump but even I tend to think about my Fed Taxes in a three year moving average sense, and, since ZIRP rules the land and Cash is Trash, it is easy to just let over and under payments ride "on account".
Finally, I laughed at the NYT guy, basically selling the notion that Trump does not pay taxes and that he is being audited with respect to an almost $80,000,000 REFUND he once got - how does the NYT square getting a REFUND of $80,000,000 unless the tax payer had already paid in at least that amount? While the IRS might sometimes give you back some of the taxes you already paid...they almost never give you cash back from the House Account.

Posted by: James D. | September 28, 2020 at 05:08 PM
You may very well be right, TC, but he apparently didn't owe any income taxes for 10 out of the previous 15 years.
Moreover if he had $9+ million in direct credits and used ~$5 million of them [assuming his estimated payments were in the ballpark of his liability without the credits] I hope they still aren't having him fork over millions every year.
But the main issue of this really is someone committed an extremely serious felony disclosing the tax and income information of apparently thousands of innocents and that person probably works for the IRS or the scumbag Vance.

My tax returns used to run to 60-80 pages or more with just a small company and some investments. Imagine the scope of dsomeone like Trump's returns. Especially when it comes to real property, the finagling allowed by the tax code would keep a roomful of accountants busy.

And since OL notes his perspective, mine influenced my take on the issue. Timber gave one the option of treating proceeds as income or cap gains. and with timber depletion and all manner of business, investment and conservation easement deductions I could pretty much engineer zero taxes every year if I wanted to, though I often gave myself a liability just to avoid their hit list.
The only time I was audited they went through everything with a fine tooth comb and one jackass was pushing us toward tax court until I found a reasonable superior who looked at things objectively and I ended up with a $900 refund.

The original contact officer should be the only one talking to him. Parscale is conversing with him when another officer starts giving commands to get down. Parscale sounds impaired so I doubt if he heard the additional commands. He doesn’t react like he did. Your hearing is the first thing to deteriorate when intoxicated. Right now I don’t like it. Iggy "but he apparently didn't owe any income taxes for 10 out of the previous 15 years"
It is the very nature of the taxable income stream from every commercial real estate project that huge paper losses are run up during the construction phase (interest on construction loans are expensed when paid, not capitalized, for example, as are many other costs of development). Such losses are features, not bugs. Once the project is built, the rental income usually does not cover the operating expenses and interest until the building is almost full so those losses get piled onto the construction period losses. Another feature, not a bug. Finally, as soon as the building is placed into service the owner gets to depreciate it. Which is another operating expense (but NON CASH - on paper only) making the losses even bigger in the early years. You know the thing: Feature not bug. Also in those early days a lot of refinancing occurs and in some but not all of those, huge financing fees might be "expensed" and not capitalized.
So a really really successful real estate deal might earn really really sweet huge (paper) "losses" on the tax books which can shelter income from that and other projects for years and years. Over a number of years, rents will go up, depreciation charges will peter out, and more of the mortgage payments are principal (not deductible) and less is interest (deductible). Then the project has "flipped" into positive TAXABLE income and that starts eating into the saved up losses. If the owner sleeps through all of those years, gasp, the losses could run out and he might actually have to write a check to the IRS. Few people capable of succeeding in this business let that happen. All THAT requires is a new deal and then another...
One great deal can make this last for decades, done right.
The chickens come home to roost when the project is sold and the profit is the sales price in excess of basis, and the basis is lower than it might have been because so much of the cost was taken as losses up front. So the gain is bigger and the tax on it at the end is bigger. But the tax on the back is at Cap Gains rates and the taxes not paid up front were at Ord Income Rates.
I am sure the NYT guy can explain it to you.

BTW Iggy, when I was just a pup and he was a hot shot tax lawyer in the 50's, my Dad regaled me with his victory for a client who made a fortune growing Christmas Trees such that at 8 or 9 I learned those concepts you mention about from your lumber biz.

Disclosure is Underway. Earth was Partly a Reptilian Colony using the Humans as Food Energy and Physically.
Not partly. They ruled us for centuries upon centuries.
My gut feeling is...that the chasers here are not human...and they have just ripped off that person's arms...you can also hear the guy videoing vomitting...if this is to do with the DUMB tunnels...then we are in for one hell of a fight
it's not Reptilian in footage it is T- viris zombies real zombies. Probably created by the Reptilian
So these comments just appeared on a post in my FB feed with a 'video' showing Russian soldiers 'eating' a zombie.
Some people are seriously screwed up. These are all "Q" people. Another comment refers to the hundreds of miles of underground tunnels being used by the zombies and the underground war going on between Western Militaries and the zombies.
A fresh change from their usual claim that all the missing kids are in the tunnels servicing Oprah and the adreno nutz...

OL, I learned all your real estate tax games from my dad. He did a bunch on the side in Houston and South Jersey. Also learned the tax on dairy cattle, another thing he invested in. (Did my own real estate in Philly in the 80s). I prefer software. :)

Stephanie, I thought the reptilians were based in Antarctica, which given the average temps and cold blooded features of reptiles would keep their mischief to a minimum. Or did the ozone hole change that? ;)

I understand and experienced a lot of what you mentioned OL, because I was buying the RE with the timber.
But my point was since Trump had been paying dang few taxes apparently from the casino issues onward that made it even less sensible for his accountants to assume big tax liabilities.
But presumably when you're worth billions playing it safe with $5 or $10 million chump change makes sense. That's just the keep the IRS at bay fund.

Fed income taxes are a maze of options and commitments. For example, unlike OL and DJT, mine were all on foreign earned income. Since ui made so much and had my taxes pumped up because of the UK taxes, I had to deduct those over a 5 year period. Very complicated.
How much? Well our USA contingent on international assignments were assigned our own dedicated PWC accountant to take care of it. Imagine, you live a city/state in the US and go to Kuwait for one year, then Saudi Arabia for 2 years, then the UK for 3 years, then Holland, Belgium and France for 2 years.
A dog’s breakfast of tax calculations. I still wonder if I ever got back what was honestly mines.

That Napa fire looks to be right down in the valley between Calistoga and St Helena and we still have a red flag warning for northeast winds today and tonight which push it right toward the valley.
It's actually two fires and the other one is bearing down on Santa Rosa which got clobbered about three years ago by another fire.
