Jane, almost that entire row of houses has been moved as close to the road as they can get, or else down the street to empty lots on the other side. A few years ago, we all pitched in to move the lighthouse itself away from danger. (THAT was a big deal).

Several of the remaining cliff hangers have spent millions of their own dollars to find a technology for the base of the bluff that might prevent further erosion. That, as you can imagine is highly controversial since the "base of the bluff" and the beach are public lands with gazillions of agencies involved. "Save the Bluff" is our long running polite battle in Sconset. The state and courts have let them install 1,000 feet as a test bed and even that requires 1 dump truck of new sand for every foot, every Spring. Forever. So think more than 1,000 dump trucks of sand needed per year, just for the test section.

Anybody who has tried to hold back unrelenting Nor'easters with walls of dollars knows how that story ends.

Real or imagined... the 60 day rule has been called.

@paulsperry

UPDATE: Today marks 56 days till the election & Durham has officially entered the 60-day pre-election "blackout" period set by a longstanding, albeit soft, DOJ rule restricting announcements of indictments or new criminal cases or interim reports that might influence the election

some people thought that we should be above using the process as the punishment, win or lose, because that makes us just like them.

I don’t care one bit if it makes us more like them. They chose the game, they made the rules, and they will continue to do it to conservatives u til they are forced to pay a painful cost for doing so.

Anyway, I’d rather we all be blind and toothless than have only our side be blind and toothless and slaves of the people who gouged out our eyes and knocked out our teeth.

NYPost:
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Monday threatened to impose "a personal price" on business leaders if they resist attempts to unionize during his presidency. Biden made the threat as he vowed to be the most pro-union president in history during a Labor Day webstream with AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka. "I'm going to hold company executives personally liable for interfering with workers who are attempting to unionize. It's not enough just to have their corporations pay a fine. If they're part of the problem, they are going to pay a personal price," Biden said.

--The morning overcast has a slight yellow-orange tinge. We have the onshore wind as usual so the air is ok, but 'Weird' is the word that came to me also.--

The overcast here is all day and thick as mud. The sun, to the extent we can see it, turns a brilliant orange by midafternoon.

That fire I mentioned previously is doing exactly what I thought it might; in 3 1/2 days it's already 145,000 acres and still 0% contained. Looks like it has burnt right to the shores of Shaver Lake which is a very popular mountain lake with lots of homes and cabins and stuff around it. Has burnt half way around Huntington Lake and almost all the way around Mammoth Pool Reservoir which is in the San Joaquin River canyon which is a steep, deep place to try to stop a fire.
Steep canyons and tons of fuel when I was there. Since then there has been unbelievable beetle kills n the stands back three or so years ago. I drove around formerly pretty Bass Lake about ten miles west of the fire last year and 80-90% of the pines that surrounded it wear dead and falling over.

The Creek Fire

The one [actually three separate but very proximate fires] nearer the coast east of Fort Bragg is over 400,000 acres but they seem to be making it a bit of progress on it. We've been fortunate that pretty much all of them have been in very sparsely habitated areas.

Madden NFL 2021 is adding Colin Kaepernick, who remains an unsigned free agent after he started protesting police brutality as a San Francisco 49er in 2016 by kneeling during the national anthem, as a quarterback option in the latest version of the popular video game. "Colin Kaepernick is one of the top free agents in football and a starting-caliber quarterback. Jane "Are they unsellable? Are they part time residents?"

Heck yes they sell. I know a guy who paid nearly $2 million for one that was just feet from the bank who said if he could enjoy that view for even five years, it was cheaper than renting. If it lasted ten years, it was a home run. (It is the nature of such erosion that it goes at one scary rate for three or four years then for unknown reasons, it just stops, often for years.) So for a gambler, it is sport.

They are all "Summer People" who come for the season.

And Covid-19 has another especially insidious trick. Through another pathway, the team’s data shows, it increases production of hyaluronic acid (HLA) in the lungs. HLA is often used in soaps and lotions for its ability to absorb more than 1,000 times its weight in fluid. When it combines with fluid leaking into the lungs, the results are disastrous: It forms a hydrogel, which can fill the lungs in some patients. According to Jacobson, once this happens, “it’s like trying to breathe through Jell-O.”

This may explain why ventilators have proven less effective in treating advanced Covid-19 than doctors originally expected, based on experiences with other viruses.

Gunfire erupted outside of the Cheetah nightclub in Midtown Atlanta early Sunday, causing damage to cars but no injuries, police said.

Atlanta police responded to a shots-fired call about 3 a.m. at the location on Spring Street, spokesman Sgt. Jarius Daugherty said. One possible suspect was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Daugherty said.

Old Lurker

Jane, nope. Insurance rarely covers damage from long term erosion. Usually requires an "event". Now if he had a fire right before the next Nor'easter...

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--Governor Newsom is now pushing for an “exit tax” to penalize people moving out of California.--

Hey, they could use the revenue to build like a wall with guard towers and machine guns. Maybe call it the Berlin Wall - Western Extension.
Commies may think walls don't keep people out but they know damn well they keep people in.

OTOH if Newsom wanted to create a perverse incentive to make any fence sitters push the button he just did it. Not sure it would pass constitutional muster. Maybe Roberts will find an exit tax is really a permissible fine.

Narciso

Thats what the wandering coma, fidel did in his hey day.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

It would not surprise me one bit if the SCOTUS would uphold Wickard [a guy growing wheat on his own plot for his own consumption is interfering in interstate commerce] but find Newsom perfectly within his rights to tax people who are literally engaging in the interstate commerce of selling one home, buying another and changing jobs, all across state lines.

Has anyone commented on TMs link (Politico on 8 "battleground" states)?

Well, Deplorable Don has :) :)
https://donsurber.blogspot.com/2020/09/polls-say-lot-when-they-say-nothing-at.html
snips:
"The latest poll on Ohio is the CBS/You Gov poll taken July 21-24. It showed President Donald John Trump was up by 1 point. There have been no polling reports on Ohio reported by Real Clear Politics since then. Ohio is a battleground state by virtue of its reliability. In 36 of the 40 presidential races since Lincoln's election, the winner of Ohio also won the presidency. That's exactly a 90% accuracy rate that beats all other states."
But Trump is leading Ohio so naturally:
"In selecting its 8 top battleground states, Politico did not consider Ohio" Heh.

"Instead it chose, "Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin." President Trump took 7 of those states last time and barely lost Minnesota. (Nate Silver's) 538 had predicted in 2016 that he would lose 6 of them."

Plus this: "And all the misses were on Republican wins. When you miss six states in the polls, you lose the public's trust especially when all the misses are in the same direction."

Back from SV where we saw our upstairs neighbor for the first time in over a year. She’s a widow, age 60, cat person, retired University prof from Seattle U where she taught women’s studies and creative writing. She now lives on the same rock as Man Tran. As averse as I am to stereotyping her political leanings, it would hardly be going out on a limb to believe she’s as reliably prog as she could be. She came down for wine and gourmet pizza last evening and, without any prompting, confessed she is terrified of our country becoming socialist and, having been born and raised in Seattle, the rioting has furthered her terror. I didn’t ask whom she would be voting for but I am still stunned at her revelation. I seriously doubt she’s alone in those fears in the state of Washington.

Mere anecdotal but still...

Belated birthday wishes to MM.

Manuel Transmission

Strange couple of days around here. First we had a wonderful long weekend with clear skies and lovely mid-70s temps with a party on our rocky beach Friday evening. Then yesterday there were fairly high winds out of the north blowing all day, which normally only happens in the winter half of the year. No weather related to it, except possibly some side effect of all that winter weather coming down out of Alberta that dumped all that early snow in MT and WY. So two things that were weird, 1) last evening the temperature never dropped at all in the evening, and 2) this morning we were swamped with smoke. Coincidently, or not, there were really bad fires way over in eastern WA, but can't see how that smoke got here, so maybe they had bad fires in BC that we haven't heard about.

And then to cap all that off, we were treated with some up close and personal visits from some buzzards. Mrs MT poked around and thinks there is a dead seal in front of the neighbors that was the center of attention.

(HB MM)

"As part of the ongoing randomized, controlled global trials of the Oxford coronavirus vaccine, our standard review process triggered a pause to vaccination to allow review of safety data.

This is a routine action which has to happen whenever there is a potentially unexplained illness in one of the trials, while it is investigated, ensuring we maintain the integrity of the trials.

In large trials, illnesses will happen by chance but must be independently reviewed to check this carefully.

We are working to expedite the review of the single event to minimize any potential impact on the trial timeline. We are committed to the safety of our participants and the highest standards of conduct in our trials."

There are currently nine vaccine candidates in Phase 3 trials. AstraZeneca’s is the first Phase 3 Covid-19 vaccine trial known to have been put on hold.

In one of those strange stories that are only possible in the internet age, I am friends with someone from Japan. We both took a business course on line years ago, and joined the same facebook group. Mamoru and I had a meet-up a couple of years ago in Grand Central Station's Oyster Bar; he's a terrific guy and speaks passable English. He was supposed to come back to New York this past March, but that obviously was canceled. Mamoru is an avid cyclist and often posts pictures of his latest rides in Japan. The translations in Facebook are laughable, but he just posted that his bike was stolen, along with some mis-translations that are pretty funny. I feel bad for him but I am not sure what I can do to help. He's a business man and probably can afford to buy another one. I'm not sure why I'm even posting this here, but I figured you guys would understand.

I noticed just the other day in an American Thinker article written by Jack Cashill, a writer I like very much, in which I thought he used affect when he should have used effect.

And now that I am looking at my Japanese friend's FB post a little more closely, it appears that it was the bike of a friend of his that was stolen, not his own bike, and he posted in hopes that the someone might have surveillance video and can help to recover his friend's bike.

Narciso

Affect is when it happens to you. Effect is when it happens to others.
