TM, did Jones pass the “walk and chew gum” test?

GUS

The truth doesn't matter?

henry

Gus, not by traditional NYT editing policy.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Willowed;
“There's an anti Trump vote but I can't see much of a pro Biden one.”

Produces the same outcome.

Not necessarily and probably not. Trump has enthusiastic support and there is a huge hate-the-Dems vote on the right. Biden has only half of that enthusiasm cocktail and usually the hate half is the weaker half.

Willowed:

Rocco,

My maternal grandparents ALWAYS opposed the idea of teacher's unions. Grandmother taught 5th grade and grandpa taught high school government.

They were convinced that teachers could not claim to be professionals if they formed a union, which in their experience would be associated with labor, and would have too much control over curriculum.

Maybe as the older teachers retired, the newer ones, swayed by the increasing leftism of educational schools, became more pro-union and conservative teachers either found places to work that were more receptive to conservatism or never went to work as teachers after all.

Marlene

Looks like Trump is going to Bangor after his Manchester rally. The FAA has closed airspace between 1:30 and 6 this afternoon. The man's energy is amazing!

Also willowed, response to MM's 10:51 willow:

They were convinced that teachers could not claim to be professionals if they formed a union, which in their experience would be associated with labor, and would have too much control over curriculum.

There was a landmark SCOTUS case in 1980 that deemed private university faculty "managerial," and therefore not allowed to unionize, at least for collective bargaining purposes, much to the consternation of leftist professors, especially those in the humanities that end up with market-determined salaries rather than enforced equity with higher-paid disciplines.

JimNorCal

All the fliers for local Prog candidates say they support "equity"

Just to confirm,
equality = equal treatment under the law
equity = equal results, regardless of effort

Is that a fair assessment? I don't speak Prog very good.

GUS

No way HENRY. He's a Lady.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Sadly, not anymore jim.

Equity now equals disparate results in favor of the oppressed and comprised mainly of the fruits of the privileged's labor since the oppressed don't produce very much.

Tom R

There is a picture floating around on Twitter of Paul Pelosi with a young Asian girl whose arms are in some kind of bindings. There is no nudity and it appears to be out in the public but the picture does come across as very strange. The tweets say the picture is from Hunter Biden’s laptop. I went back to copy the link and Twitter had deleted the post.

A proposal many here have made. Perhaps it's catching on;
A Modest Proposal: Make Universities Pay for Student Debt Forgiveness

It raises a good point. In the private sector loans are provided to acquire something of a relatively known quality and value such a car or home or appliance and the value is arrived at chiefly by actual supply and demand. So the lender has a decent idea of risk/reward.
The state has so corrupted that mechanism that a gigantic artificial demand has been created and the providers of the product have been enabled to offer a product that often has an inherent value without any relation to the loan required to obtain it and often a negative value.
We have a system where universities have been paid to produce the equivalent of a rusted car on cinderblocks without an engine and getting paid the same or more for that hulk as for a new Ferrari, while bearing zero liability for providing a liability as a product. And Biden and that bunch think the taxpayers should pay the loan off for this rusted hulk of a person the universities produced.
I have a modest proposal myself in honor of the recently departed Jerry Jeff Walker; universities are given the choice of paying off the loans of these defective freaks they churn out or the red diaper mothers can line up against the wall.

Michael Yon - Well worth reading the complete article:

"Oct 23, 2020 at 1:27 PM
Dispatch 30: Thai and US Insurrection, and Insurgency.Unedited morning thoughts:...

Portland, Oregon, is in clear insurgency. A local insurgency, but clear. A local communist revolution. A tumor on the larger body of America.

The communist Sarah Iannarone openly supports ANTIFA and is running for mayor of Portland. ANTIFA in Portland already has assassinated someone in plain view. ANTIFA is a terrorist organization committing hundreds of acts of violence per month.

Sarah Iannarone clearly states her intention to defund the police. Anyone who thinks this will end nicely does not know much about communists. Communists, as they seize the reigns of power and budget, will use those same resources to create their own enforcers. Portland is in a state of revolution. Insurgency. The goal is not simply to elect a new Mayor but to fundamentally transform the city into a communist base.

Many people in Portland realize the danger, and are no longer in Portland. They are in Boise, or at least somewhere else. Others are preparing to jump from Portland like Hong Kongers leaping to Taiwan or Canada. Like Cubans fleeing to Florida, or East Germans making an escape. At least there is no wall and they are free to leave..."

Terrific comment at TheNewNeo shows what we are up against.

"There is a massive, well organized voting fraud operation created by Obama and Eric Holder. It’s been nearly a full-time job for Holder these past few years. The push for 100 percent voting by mail, motor-voter combined with granting drivers licenses to non citizens, no signature verification on mailed in ballots, refusal to purge voter rolls of those who have died or moved away (which means hundreds of thousands of ballots mailed to nonexistent voters) and ballot harvesting schemes which allow the chain of custody for ballots to be violated by party functionaries (also facilitates vote buying) ….. all of these are being pushed by Holder and company from coast-to-coast."

Jim Eagle

You don't. I'll bet that those 46% AA who are favorable toward Trump are predominantly registered as Dems. Florida is famous for crossover voters.

https://amgreatness.com/2020/10/24/if-masks-dont-work-why-do-we-keep-wearing-them/

No one should underestimate how strong and widespread the belief in masks is. For many, they are a source of profound security. They are secure from the virus, immorality, and in the promise of societal approval. Their masks even empower them to become puritanical and judgmental. With full-throated conviction, they will blame victims of COVID-19 for not wearing masks and for lacking sufficient faith in the mask. They will insist on quarantining them and their family members for two-weeks no matter what. In most cases, it’s difficult to determine whether this is a health precaution designed to mitigate spread or a punishment for being near the virus in the first place.

Many people who are frustrated with the masking simply want to return to mask-free normality. It isn’t so simple anymore. Asking a person to take off his mask now means asking him to take off all that the masking has come to mean. Removing it means removing one’s safety, one’s sense of belonging, and one’s values.

Yep. Alas.

JimNorCal

Thanks for the tomato ideas. Still can’t eat them myself, so am lacking motivation.

Anonamom, I read the article you linked re the young woman who will reluctantly vote for Trump. She makes some interesting points, such as how the left wants to manage people, and that the right is simply “indifferent” (I think that’s the word she used). It seems to me she is still in denial about the right, and the right’s belief in laissez faire rather than indifference. But she seems to be getting there. It’s as though she refuses to see any good on the part of the right. I see that with a lot of people. They agree the left is awful, and they also have a pre-set standard concerning the right. I think it’s naive to think that the concept of self-control and honoring individual rights is “indifference.” I am not sure how to convince people otherwise. If one doesn’t understand the value of our Constitution, how can one understand the public policy of the right?

Hope that made any sense. I sent the walk away video to my oldest. Not sure if she has watched it, but she said she would. My youngest is tough. Best to keep quiet and let her see bit by bit. Until last week she was working double shifts waitressing and studying nursing. She had no time to ponder, and even meet with friends. Last weekend she met with friends as the restaurant is closed. She fell apart and was so sad after it all. I think she was worn out, but also realized what she is missing due to the shut downs. She would never read that article. Being home, where she sees the conflicting opinions of her brother and parents vs. those of the professors on line, I think is the best medicine. (Porch has made that point re the college-aged kids and voting).

Sorry that was so long and poorly written. Tried to keep it short, but there’s a lot going on in the forced-at-home family.

Narciso

But they took igor danchenkos story to the bank.

Clarice, why bother confirming the important bits (ie the other side of the emails) if repair shop guy is too deplorable for the high noses in the courts? That would take effort, cost cocktail party invites, and mean no cushy work free job after retirement.

I trust the FBI / DOJ decision maker is one of those “policy” civil servants that can be kicked to the curb under Trump’s EO.

James D.

Removing it means removing one’s safety, one’s sense of belonging, and one’s values.

Most of all, it removes their power to be judgmental towards and feel superior to their fellow citizens. And it’s clear that way too many of our neighbors aren’t going to give that up without a fight.

Notable and Quotable: This may be behind the WSJ paywall, so I'll post it in its entirety for JOMers. entertainment:

National Review: Senator, last week at the hearing you mentioned that you thought it was “offensive and outdated” when Amy Barrett used the [term] “sexual preference.” It turns out that Joe Biden said it in May. Ruth Bader Ginsburg said it in 2017. Some of your colleagues on the Judiciary Committee said it maybe in 2010, 2012. Do you stand by that criticism?

Mazie Hirono: Well, of course.

NR: Do you think Joe Biden should apologize for saying that in May?

Hirono: Well, look, it’s a lesson learned for all of us. But when you’re going on the Supreme Court and you’ve been a judge, as one of my judge friends said, you should know what these words mean.

NR: Should Joe Biden apologize, too, like Amy Coney Barrett did?

Hirono: Joe Biden is not up for the Supreme Court.

NR: He’s up for the presidency. So, he shouldn’t apologize?

Hirono: People will decide.

NR: You don’t want to call on him to apologize?

Hirono: Oh, stop it. The world is in flames.

Essentially, "Because shut up."

Note how Stetler describes the AP editor: a “newsmaker”

On the other hand, I guess it’s one of those Kinsley gaffes where somebody unintentionally (or maybe unknowingly) tells the truth.

OMG! I just read the Bangor Daily online and Trump is supposedly going to visit an apple orchard about 10 miles down the road from BIA. That road is where we had a condo before moving to the cabin in the woods. The apple orchard owner told reporters he doesn't know about a Trump visit (because he can't say, duh) but the President is welcome to come and pick apples. Ha! That orchard has amazing corn mazes.

Here’s the governor of New York State:

If the local government does not effectively enforce the law, we will withhold funds from the local government… If they don’t, we will withhold funding from the government. I don’t like to do that. Budgets are tough all across the board. I don’t know how else to get them to do the enforcement they need to do. So, hopefully that will motivate them because nothing else I have done has motivated them – not my rapier wit, not my sense of humor, not my guilt, not my blame, not my admonition, and not my pleas. Maybe money works,” Cuomo said.

He later pointed out that yeshivas receive a significant amount of funding.

“I guarantee if a yeshiva gets closed down, and they’re not going to get state funding, you will see compliance,” Cuomo said.

Pardon my language, how the holy fuck is this guy not hanging from a lamppost right now?

Well, duh! I just realized that Dana White of the UFC has a home in Levant, where Trump is supposed to visit the apple orchard. jimmyk, can you imagine what kind of salaries those managers would demand if not for the SC?

In Yeshiva, the court affirmed that, because full-time faculty members at Yeshiva University exercised what it described as “absolute” authority in helping to establish guidelines with regard to academic matters such as scheduling classes, selecting teaching methods, setting grading policies, determining teaching loads, establishing pay scales and benefits packages, and deciding who is awarded tenure, promotion, and sabbaticals, they essentially exercised managerial duties. The controlling consideration in the case was that the faculty of Yeshiva University exercised authority that in any other context unquestionably would have been considered managerial. Thus, consistent with general principles of labour law that managers or supervisors and regular employees should not be in the same bargaining unit because they represent significantly different communities of interest, the faculty members were not entitled to the collective-bargaining protections guaranteed by the NLRA.
