But one crazy thing on the right equalizes/justifies a hundred crazy things on the left.

Exactly. There's no proportionality at all, but it gives the "muh both sides do it" cover to those who are looking for such cover.

Mainly, in my experience, Dems who in their hearts know their side is wrong on issues they care about (like free speech) but want to believe that other side is bad. Like my mom.

Porchlight

*that the other side is worse.

My son is 23, so I've watched enough Sponge Bob that I have this t-shirt:

That's not me or him in the pic, btw. :-)

Also, speaking of Bikini Bottom, nice fishing avatar Strawman.

I feel the same about the insane ongoing reaction to covid. It's like they actively want to live in a state of constant fear, and surrender any control over their own lives to others. I do not understand it at all.
No you’ve missed the essential motivation: they want YOU to surrender control of YOUR life to THEM. They cloak themselves that this is the surrendering control to some super special elite experts, but the operative motivation is that THEY control what “experts” you submit to, and THEY enforce your submission. The content of the rules you submit to is largely irrelevant— it’s your submission that matters.

This is standard reaction to a scary threat from outside. They don’t think that they can defeat the outside threat, so they turn on their friends and neighbors as targets because they think we are more vulnerable.

For those of you who read Harry Potter, it’s all there.

For those of you who missed my link to the Sponge Bob Sea Bear episode, take 5 minutes to watch now: https://youtu.be/68h8-ESTY6o

Porchlight

Ext, your son is the same age as my friend's son and it was at this friend's house that I first saw SpongeBob. 1998-1999, in there.

I thought it was kinda spastic until it was my time to watch it and then I completely loved it. And there are so many season, I'm always finding episodes I haven't seen.

Catsmeat

I highly recommend The Sponge Bob Squarepants Movie--including a cameo by David Hasselhoff. It is completely idiotic but very funny. (I was dragged unwillingly by my kids into watching, and am now a full convert).

And kudos again to you, Jane!

Sorry if this has been posted I absolutely can not keep/catch up.

Glenn Reynolds has been talking for years about the effect an earthquake on the New Madrid fault would have on the country.

Dutchsinse has observed indications on NMF that would, if seen in CA, make him think an earthquake was possible in the near future.

Does anyone besides me remember the cartoon Tom Terrific on Captain Kangaroo?

It's not repeated much because it was in black and white.

Tom Terrific with Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog, and that arch-villain, Crabby Appleton!

henry,

I have clear memories of a LOT of stuff from my childhood, including Captain Kangaroo, Bunny Rabbit, and Mr. Moose. We used to sit around waiting for Tom Terrific cartoon episodes. LOL!

MissMarple2

Watched his podcast on Friday and Paula was crying, because apparently he had just gotten the phone call before he came on air.

I am praying for him, too.

In one episode of SpongeBob there’s a quote that applies perfectly to the Democrats, the MSM and way too many of the GOP:

“You had your chance and you failed. You have to stop living in the past.”

I think kids would be well served if the old Saturday morning serials--Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger were still being aired.

Porchlight

clarice, my son watches Leave It To Beaver every morning while he has breakfast. It's on one of the geezer broadcast channels, MeTV. Which is actually headquartered in Austin. I wish I could work for them.

Dave (in MA)

I was working in the front yard about 25 years ago and the kid across the street came out and was in their driveway, I said hello and he looked at me and burst into tears and ran into the house. I asked his father what was wrong and he said, "We won't let him watch Ren & Stimpy" (I had on a Ren & Stimpy T-shirt).

MissMarple2

clarice,

I do, too.

The Lone Ranger probably isn't PC because of Tonto. I liked it, though, as well as Roy Rogers.

Dave (in MA)

Beck mentioned that some news sources are reporting that another illegal immigrant stampede is on its way from Central America just in time to create chaos leading up to Nov. 3. When I checked, I found mentions of Guatemala and Mexico saying they'd turn them back.

If they remade Leave it to Beaver today, June wouldn't be an overdressed housewife; she'd have a better career than Ward, who'd be portrayed as a clueless dummy. Beaver would have to have his parents arrange playdates with Larry and Whitey, one of whom would be required to be black, and Lumpy would have two fathers.

Convenient.

JUST IN: Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer said Senate Republicans should require testing for senators and staff if they will not delay a Supreme Court hearing scheduled to start next week, amid an outbreak of coronavirus cases.
Schumer said moving forward with the "already illegitimate nomination process" and holding the hearing for Judge Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court nomination without implementing testing would be "intentionally reckless."

The Hill.

JM Hanes

Captain Kangaroo was my fav. I remember Mr. Greenjeans better than Grandfather Clock, though.

Interesting results from your survey of the horde, Captain. Contra Gus, I wasn’t trying to “protect” Grenell, I just didn’t know what you were seeing/hearing. Perhaps it’s because we have a wider range of mannerisms in the south. A lot of men from New Orleans, for example, or old Virginia have exaggerated speech and gestural patterns that would practically break your gaydar, but they aren’t gay, and aren’t more likely to be gay than anyone else.

Can anyone give me a lead on where to find the article which purported to establish that COVID19 did not aerosolize after all? Was it from the CDC or somewhere else? Also, I think I remember people saying that asymptomatic people are not, in fact, contagious, and would like to find a source on that as well.

I have the opportunity to pass some counter-narrative info along to a lib. I was pleased to find that the article on masks as Talismans was published by the New England Journal of Medicine, which is the kind of "acceptable" source I'm looking for.

Any help would be appreciated.

I've tried to be clear that I was not making a value judgment about your observation either! That's why I started my original post off with "no big deal." I was just curious about what you saw as a gay mannerisms, when Grenell struck me as one of the least "gay" gays I've seen. I'm still not sure what I was apparently missing, but maybe that's because it's an impression that's difficult to specifically nail down?

JM Hanes

clarice & jimmyk:

Those are both great articles, which I will pass along! I'm still looking for an article establishing that asymptomatic people are not spreaders, which I believe a number of people here have mentioned and another more recent article which I believe asserted that COVID 19 does not aerosolize. I may be wrong about the latter, but I was sure I had heard that surprising updated info.

I'm still not sure what I was apparently missing, but maybe that's because it's an impression that's difficult to specifically nail down?

Yes. It's an intangible thing that's difficult to put into words.
