Let's hope this is just a sensible precaution. I've read there is a Presidential Suite at Walter Reed used exclusively by, believe it or not, the POTUS.
Trump is taking a Regeneron antibody cocktail drug that is still in trials. FDA has approved compassionate use for other patients (so they company says) and now for Trump.
Their Sept 29 upbeat press release with preliminary results is here.
Eli Lilly also has an antibody cocktail which worked well, so this medical decision made lots of sense. There results are also more comprehensible, as presented here:
Eli Lilly reports this morning interim results from a placebo-controlled trial of one such compound, cloned in quantity from an antibody captured from the blood of a patient who recovered from COVID-19. In June, the company began a trial delivering either placebo or one of three doses of the antibody, called LY-CoV555, to 452 patients. These were not gravely ill people, but patients with mild or moderate symptoms who had tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 within the past 3 days and had not been hospitalized.
Five of 302 patients who received the drug ended up being hospitalized—1.7%. But nine of the 150 placebo patients ended up in the hospital—6%—meaning there was a 72% reduced risk of being hospitalized for patients who received the antibody versus those who received a placebo. The drug produced no serious side effects, the company reports.
So - among people with mild to moderate symptoms (like Trump, so far) 94% on placebo avoid serious illness, versus 98.3% of those who got the Eli Lilly treatment. Great odds versus even better odds, in other words, although that is across a range of ages and pre-existing conditions.
I guess it should be pointed out that MAGUIRE is no DR ATLAS.

Well, the kids came and picked up trash and cut down the hydrangeas for the year. They also wanted one of the kittens so I said it was ok, then caught holy hell when I called my daughter because she thinks they are too young (the kittens) and I thought it was ok because she was going to take them all to the shelter tomorrow.
I never do anything right. Oh well.

Lovely Miss M. Clearly, your daughter needs some counseling at the least.

A-mom "Ignore these anonymous sources, unless your kid or niece happens to be POTUS's senior medical resident in the unit."
And those of us here whose kids are doctors know that none of our kids would tell us squat about any actual patient, much less a VIP. When YL2 was at Columbia Med, a student in the Med School was, I think, kicked out for just accessing the EMRs of Bill Clinton when he had his heart trouble.
If I needed a scrip called in, I would get it much easier from A-mom than from YL2.
Posted by: Old Lurker | October 03, 2020 at 03:34 PM
Kittens should be with their mom for about 5 wks.
Unless their mom is also going to the shelter don't see what the problem would be. Kittens get homes pretty easy, so shelter for them is likely okay, but if mom is going there her future could be at risk.

boris,
The mom is going, too, so I will advise daughter of that. The Mom cat brought the kittens here and she hangs around the patio door because my daughter feeds them.
The kittens are strong because my daughter gave the mom pregnant cat food and then she bought high-nutrient kitten food which the kittens have been eating.

Did you mean take care of the mouse like eliminate him, or take care of him like feed and water him?
I prefer how the mice won't even approach the house here. Otherwise, I get put in charge of mousetraps or poison, which I really don't want to have to mess with. (If I put daughter in charge, we would be having little mousey beds made and she would probably be putting out cheese and crackers for them.)
Posted by: MissMarple2 | October 03, 2020 at 04:06 PM
MM,
Have you tried to give the kittens away, once they get to be old enough? We've limited experience, but never have had any trouble with doing. The momma cat may be more of a problem.
I hate to see cats go to shelters, particularly when so many would take them.

MM, I was up there doing something, with the cat sitting right next to me, and I heard a noise. I had seen telltale signs of a mouse, but now I was hearing it - it had somehow fallen into an enormous bag of styrofoam packing peanuts and was down at the bottom, looking for a way out. I am not a big mouse fan myself, actually, so it's possible (if you believe my wife) that I screamed bloody murder while running down all the stairs carrying this bag. I left the bag outside near the trash, and I'm confident Mr. Mouse made a getaway.

First day off in a very long time. Sitting at a picnic table on the town square of Leavenworth. Octoberfest is kicking in. 75 deg, light breeze. Several thousand strollers about. All the little restaurants/pubs have half the street to cordon off for outside tables. The other lane and sidewalk are for the strollers. About half wearing masks, but more like habit than anything. About every 3rd or 4th has a dog. Finally realized that the light pole in front of me is the dog Twitter terminal. Most just read it, but some leave their own comment.
Tried a couple beers last night. Lots of local brews that due to the constraints are being canned every night. Not impressed, given I’m not that much of a beer fan. The 2nd one was actual German beer out of a tap. I had the darkest thing they served and it was quite lovely.

Where there is one mouse there are probably many more! I sell tons of mouse traps, poison, etc. You should hear the stories. Many don't want to hurt them, yet they tell me they are running through the cutlery drawer (YIKES!). At that point I tell them they probably need an exterminator.
Me, I practice overkill. One mouse - poison in every corner. Same for ants - those things creep me out more than mice! I call the bug and mouse killer section the "heebie jeebie" area.
Also Miss M and anyone else who follows twitter - please take a break from that place. I barely peruse it, and it's full of nastygrams. I am not a huge holy roller, but Jesus says to pray for your enemy. I usually send a prayer up asking that these people lose whatever demons are causing them to type such horrible things. Good afternoon! Scout is a great varmint killer. Before we left Maine, we noticed a healthy population of field mice trying to get into the out buildings (the garage and the little guest cabin). Hubby got the crawl space under the little cabin buttoned up and the resident owl took care of the mice. Scout also caught a few. We got a hoot (ha) out of the owls this summer. We realized that dad and mom owl were protecting their nest and steered clear of that tree.

I liked the remark about how Melania is slightly younger, just a little bit.

So joan I guess you’ve missed all of my dissertations about my 5th Disease experiences!
B19 is (from the point of view of the virus) the perfect virus. It is virulently contagious, through the air, so you’ll get it just by being in the room with someone who’s contagious. It’s most contagious for ~24 hours before any symptoms show up. And it’s virtually always either completely asymptomatic or the symptoms are trivial. (That weird “slapped cheek” rash)
Because it’s such a successful virus, a majority of the population has had it and is immune, with most of them having no idea that they had it. Schools and daycare centers and other places with lots of kids are the only places where the disease can spread, because that’s the only places that you have enough not-already-immune humans that the virus doesn’t get stopped at most every transmission.
I got it in 2008 from my kids. It arrived in the community in early February in the public school. Within a couple of weeks the first Catholic school kid got it. It turned out that the music/technology teacher— who saw every kid in the school every day — was one of the rare adults who had never had it before. The totally predictable thing happened, which is that by the end of the day that the first kid brought it to school every not-already-immune person in the school was infected. And by the next day I had symptoms.
Non-trivial symptoms in adults is uncommon, and even rarer in kids. The major danger is to unborn children, because the disease will cause minor anemia in the mom and severe anemia in the baby. The one kid in our community who got really sick was a teenager who ended up in kidney failure for awhile. The one adult who got really sick was me. (Am I special or what?!? LOL)
The typical symptom in adults is joint inflammation which mimics inflammatory arthritis. In my case it started with carpal tunnel. Like many women I get minor carpal tunnel when I sleep— the passages that the nerves go through are a little smaller in women and the slight swelling of sleep takes us over the edge and gives us tingling fingers. With the B19, I had the tingling fingers while awake and then when I fell asleep, oh my! It would be ok until I got into a deep sleep after 2-3 hours and then I would wake up in screaming agony! Talk about sleep deprivation— for me AND DrF!
Fortunately the anti-inflammatory drug Lodine was able to tamp down the inflammation to manageable levels. I spent the next 4 months or so with a body like the Tin Man— with the Lodine it was manageable, but when the drug started wearing off my joints would freeze up. The pattern of pain was utterly bizarre, because it’s what I now know is called enthesitis.
To understand enthesitis, think about how each joint works. The simplest joint moves back and forth in one plane with one muscle for each direction and each muscle is attached at each end. Enthesitis is inflammation of the points where tendons attach to bones (in the chewing gum and baling wire model of the body the entheses are the gum). When only one of the several attachment points of a joint are inflamed, you get pain with motion in one specific direction. In the beginning, my hips were such that sitting down hurt, but I could stand up pain free. Gravity was in my favor! I spent a couple of months falling into chairs! At a later point, the spot on the side of my leg — around from my shin— hurt where the muscle that pulled the leg out to the side was attached. At the end it was a joint back in my foot behind one toe that hurt.
Within a few years I developed an allergy to amoxicillin, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. My endocrinologist and rheumatologist humor me in my theory that 6 months of severe inflammation triggered these autoimmune diseases.
All that said, I’m really surprised that your pediatrician didn’t recognize the rash immediately. I got the impression that this thing roars through a community and infects most people not already immune, and then burns out when it runs out of non-immune people. Then 10-15 years later, when a bunch of kids have been born not immune, and families have moved in and out so some moved in not immune, it comes roaring through again.
(anonomom if you are reading this, have you been through this where it hits, and panicky parents show up with their weirdly rashed kids, a few isolated adults get slammed like I did, and then it all burns out until next time?)
This is why the CCPv looks so familiar to me. The big difference is that with Fifth Disease the distribution of immune people is skewed very high towards adults— who’ve been around long enough to have multiple opportunities to get it and become immune. But the characteristic of the symptoms frequently being on the trivial side are there, which is part of what makes it so easily spread in that people don’t know they have it until they have already spread it.
I think it’s also why we have done such drastic damage to our kids and it has had no mitigating effects on the virus spread. Every OTHER disease like this is like Fifth Disease, and closing schools for a short time is highly effective at forcing the virus to burn itself out.
