imposing purchase limits, in some cases, leads to shortages.
What’s more important is that purchase limits spread viruses. Shoppers are forced to go from store to store to assemble all of their supplies, and every store becomes much more crowded as people are forced to spend much more time in all of the various stores than without the shortages.
Purchase limits CREATE tens of millions of superspreader events continuously across the whole country.
With the entire country involved in waves of infections (as opposed to just a few limited areas like we had last spring) they would be catastrophic.
Hearing about yesterday's rallies in DC and around the country I was reminded of the song from Les Miz "Do You Hear the People Sing?" and rather enjoyed this video from early 2017.

I bookmarked that Atlantic story on Turchin.
Normally I'm pretty skeptical about historical determinists who claim they have the formula for what's inevitably next, but his arguments are simple without being simplistic and fairly compelling.
It being the Atlantic, naturally the little geek writing the story nowhere mentions the overwhelming role of an increasingly enforced rote ideology in our dilemma because that would require bursting the very bubble he lives in, though he does mention "intellectual elites" without quite defining the term.
Plus Turchin is an expert on pine bark beetles; he's gotta be a genius. ;)
I cannot check text messages until Tuesday or Wednesday, when my new phone arrives. My kids put it on my daughter-in-law's account to save me money, and I have to wait until it arrives at their house and then either my son or DIL will bring it over here.
One compelling similarity between the personality disordered and prog ideologues is how simple and predictable they are. Their motivations are singular in purpose.
For the PD it's blocking the world off from discovering their flawed interior and thereby surviving another day of internal torment.
For the prog, it's the establishment of utopia, accomplished be destroying their evil enemies who either profit from our non utopian state or are too dumb to see that the prog is going to deliver one.
All their motivations, actions, reactions and beliefs can not only be traced back to those singular, simple goals, they can be predicted in advance.
In both cases rationality is rejected in favor of irrational means and goals that preclude and reject countervailing reason and evidence with extreme prejudice. Because their identities are completely, or nearly so, wrapped up in their goals any counterevidence is not just a threat to their opinions and ideas but their very essence and reason for living. Criticism is existentially threatening.
But here is the conundrum; why do people like TM, who is not an ideologue, disregard clearly irrational behavior and unrealistic and ultimately destructive goals rather than face the uncomfortable facts about them? The motivations here seem much harder to untangle. Peer pressure, manipulation and conformity to the zeitgeist is one reason no doubt. That's how narcissists assemble their weird little cults of personality. Fear of guilt by association of which cancel culture is another facet similar to narcissistic cults; if you're not of the body, hell is unleashed on your person and life is no fun. But there are usually enough like minded people to avoid being cancelled, until the rot becomes extreme so it must be more than that.
Part of it I suspect is the rational and the fair minded have a hard time denying the benefit of the doubt to others, even, or perhaps especially, the irrational. The TMs of the world hear their cooing niceties and want them to be true and most definitely do not want their crazy unworkable goals and unguarded totalitarian utterances to be so, so they begin to engage in their own irrationality by filtering out as mere hyperbole the very real iron fist and only seeing the velvet glove. Who wants to believe your own fellow citizens might someday be willing to build a Gulag Archipelago?
But it's the TMs of the world who fail to stop the ideologues before catastrophe overtakes the world. When they are weak enough to stop, that granting of the benefit of the doubt gives them the beachhead to put their roots down. After the conflagration those who didn't believe their lying eyes suddenly see what they couldn't before, but how they got to the point is the real problem the world needs to solve because the ideologues could never achieve real, destructive power if the rational did not get sucked in as they were infiltrating society.
I don't mean to single TM out. I'm only using him as a proxy for all those non ideologues who through a complex set of motivations develop their own irrational blinkers to avoid admitting and confronting the nature of those who would rule us. The majority of the human mind always seems to be in one of three states;
1. Everyone else is pretty much like us, which gives rise to the irrationality of granting good faith to those who have already demonstrated very bad faith, or;
2. Many are like us, but all should be, and those who aren't are preventing a much better world, so much so that they either must be converted or eliminated.
The third state is the "go away and leave me alone, you idiots" contingent. Those are the people who are eventually dragged into the mess the second group makes of the world by manipulating the first group into a massive power grab. Once the third group has shot enough of the second group after they begin feeding the first and third group to their ideological crematoria, the world returns to calm for a spell and the first group returns to rationality, until they get suckered into another go round with the second.
What I cannot understand is why the Left insists on being unhappy. I really don't care how they want to run their lives; just leave me out of it.
That's not how they want things to go, however. Not only do they have an iron-clad way in which they think things should go, they insist that everyone else get on board AND admit that they are 100% right. Any modicum of disagreement you might harbor is treated as apostasy.
Furthermore, the most sweeping insults are heaped upon you for disagreeing: you're stupid; you're fat; you sleep with a relative;blah, blah, blah. Never a disagreement about an individual concept; no. You are a completely worthless individual which the world would be better off without.
I simply don't get it (which I suppose means I am stupid).

And why Gina Haspel is still there in the CIA is beyond my comprehension. She should be fired immediately."
Herein lies the problem. Dominion is just the sort of operation the CIA would use to supposedly further US foreign policy objectives. This is why the CIA do not want full disclosure, it will hurt US intelligence efforts.
No, no, no! Shopping is an approved (therefore, non-spreading) event.

MM:
You have to stop worrying about how your daughter feels about you. Your own health should be of primary importance.
I pray for you and all JOMers that have experienced health problems recently.
You can have the consent of the governed or you can have democracy, but you can't have both. The consent of the governed means the vast majority of citizens, both the winners and losers.
The Founders understood that and so did not establish a democracy but a representative republic with a governing Constitution that went out of its way t protect minority rights and prevent pure majority rule. The reason for that was not simply to prevent the majority from crushing a minority. It was to give the minority enduring political power and a chance at not always being in the minority.
Without that the minority is no longer, to use a fashionable term, a stakeholder. The minority consents to be governed by the majority only so long as they retain their political rights and just as importantly a chance to build a majority of their own. Once you have lost the consent to be governed of a substantial minority, you have lost stability and eventually control of the country.
And that's why a stolen election is so devastating to the stability of a nation. Those from whom it was stolen, whether a political minority, which had built a winning coalition or an outright majority, will simply no longer consent to be governed by thieves. It may limp along as hope remains the thieves will revert to honor but if they don't the end will be chaotic and probably violent. If your peaceful stake in a nation is stolen from you, you will eventually seek to regain it by whatever means are available and necessary.
And now off to church to pray imprecatory prayers that God might smite the progs, before we have to. :)

peter,
I cannot check text messages until Tuesday or Wednesday, when my new phone arrives.

I don't mean to single TM out. I'm only using him as a proxy for all those non ideologues who through a complex set of motivations develop their own irrational blinkers to avoid admitting and confronting the nature of those who would rule us. The majority of the human mind always seems to be in one of three states;
1. Everyone else is pretty much like us, which gives rise to the irrationality of granting good faith to those who have already demonstrated very bad faith, or;
And that is human history in a nutshell.

Ignatz,
What I cannot understand is why the Left insists on being unhappy.
