We'll get through this. Probably.
Dan McLaughlin at NR has a long essay turning the Trump/Biden coin before coming down.... NO SPOILERS. His gist - Trump is even weaker on character and competence than Biden, the Democrats are terrifying on policy and Biden lacks the principles or energy to rein in the left, but we have to choose.
Her makes an interesting point about the possible value of a rebuilding year, or two, or four:
Coalitions and the Right Time to Lose
Losing to this Democratic Party would be very bad. But: We live in a two-party system, and its natural equilibrium is an alternation of power. Moreover, a rise in presidential power for one party tends to produce an immediate reaction in the rest of the system for the other. That is even truer since people stopped electing presidents with divided government in the first place. We saw this under Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump. It is possible that Trump is the end times for Republicans, but it is unlikely. In other words: Democrats have to win sooner or later, and we will again have to live with it, and we will again get our turn after that.
I could not in good conscience vote to make that happen, but what if Trump is really the worst possible Republican president? What if Biden is, by virtue of his age, the least likely Democratic president to get reelected on the strength of incumbency? What if a 6–3 Republican-appointed Supreme Court, with the oldest Republican appointee (Clarence Thomas) being 72, and only one Democratic appointee likely to step down in the next four years, is the safest of times for the nation to go blue? What if the 2022 Senate map looks not so bad under a President Biden, but ghastly under a second Trump term?
What if it really is true that it was good that Trump won in 2016, but is also good that the next four Republican years not be his? What if a Trump win will make the worst people and ideas in the Republican Party stronger, at the expense of the best? What if a Biden loss will make the worst people and ideas in the Democratic Party stronger, at the expense of the least-bad — as seems sure to happen? What if we still have a strong case, even with a narrow Democrat majority in the Senate, for stopping Court-packing and other insanity now? What if Trump is the only thing holding together an incoherent Democratic coalition, which needs the White House before it can tear itself to ribbons over an agenda Biden never really ran on? What if that coalition would only grow otherwise, so that the 2024 election after eight years of Trump is likely to give Democrats a much wider majority and mandate?
I do not, as a rule, believe in winning by losing. But we do have to lose eventually. A good football coach knows when to punt and get the ball back in better field position. Everything good about a second Trump administration would be better under a subsequent Republican, with less risk of a truly permanent defeat for conservatism.
Bill Belichick nods. His point that a Trump win will probably bring out the worst in both parties is a good one. And what about a Biden win?
Republicans complained after 2008 and 2012 that we lost by not running a true conservative. Nominating and then winning with Trump kinda/sorta vindicated that view, since Trump mostly held onto his new-found conservative positions, especially on judges. If Trump loses in 2020, purity of message may not identified as the problem.
I think (or certainly, hope) that Biden really is the temperamental centrist he portrayed in the primaries. In the Presidential campaign he's been chasing my vote, not the vote of my kids. I think the phrase "Reagan Democrats" has chafed Old Joe for decades and he wants to read about "Biden Republicans". IF post election analysis (will exit polls mean much this cycle?) shows a lot of disaffected Republicans for Biden that ought to embolden and empower the centrist Dems who have dragged Joe this far. It might also empower something like a "Sensible Center" on the Republican side as Reps try to lure the defectors home.
That said, Biden is running on fumes and follows polls rather than principles. But if polls tell him to be a centrist he won't object. His long-time aides are undoubtedly corporatist centrists, so his chief of staff pick and other nominations will be critical. If Elizabeth Warren is nominated as Treasury Secretary all bets are off. But she won't be!
As to Congress, Pelosi was quite firm in 2019 with the message that she did not regain the Speakership because AOC primaried a safe-seat timeserver. She won due to 30 swing-seat Democrats who weren't in a position to take crazy progressive votes.
Senate Majority Leader Schumer (if Mitch can't hold on!) will face a similar dynamic. Will a Senate with 51 Democrats that includes Joe Manchin and five of his ideological siblings really vote to pack the court and bring in DC and Puerto Rico as new states? Maybe! But probably not. ("Probably"? This is a hell of a thing to be betting on, right? Yet here we are.)
Beyond that, Biden and his strategery team surely remember Bill Clinton's come-uppance in 1994 and Obama's in 2010.
Clinton lost control of the House and Senate, leading to a long six years; Obama lost the House in 2010 and the Senate in 2014, leaving him with a pen and a phone. One would hope the Democratic leadership has figured out the problem and won't try for "third time lucky".
However! There is a theory that 2020 might be the last election. The analogy is to elections in Muslim states that vote in a religious party - the laws are changed and the incoming party never leaves power. The 2020 peril is that Senate and House moderates are persuaded to hero up, vote in the two new states, pack the court, amnesty and grant the vote to ten million undocumented Democrats, and never lose either the House or Senate again. I mostly think this is about as likely as the impending "Trump coup" progressives enjoy getting wound up about, but... time will tell.
Tough times ahead regardless.
Howdy!
Back from voting. Straight ticket.
Polling held in one of the large areas of our local VoTech school. No lines. At least half the stations were empty. One lone Biden supporter with sign out front but he was at the exit not the parking lot entrance. A typical Biden supporter, I guess🤡

A few thoughts:
I wa surprised this morning by our 10 year-old, fifth grade grandson. (My husband takes the grandchildren to school -- the grade schooler back her for about 30 minutes to have a bacon toast sandwich. His elementary school starts about 30 minutes after the older girls.
He usually watches How to Train A Dragon on Netflix, but I overslept and my husband put a football game on -- as I came thru there was a break and an ad for Biden came up. Hunt said, "I don't like Biden, isn't he the one that doesn't like cops?!"
So our living room turned into Trump 2020! He's all for Trump. So are his friends (and their families) -- at the Indian Nation Football conference the youth around the state play in (seriously, I assure you, we play games all over the state, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, etc.) I've seen MAGA hats. One players mother told a group of relatives to boys on our team come to sit down with us in the stands, don't bother sitting with us if you're not for Trump. They all laughed and sat down in our group.

One thing I've noticed: you can tell (around here) the Biden voters (liberals) and Trump voters by church denomination: Lutherans, Presbyterian, maybe Methodists all lean left. Then we come to Baptists (there are probably 10 different Baptist churches in our area), Nazarene, Church of God, Church of Christ. Non-denominational are true Red Trump voters. You can tell anywhere you go in our smallish town, who's going to vote Trump. I have no idea about Catholics, we have plenty, but I don't get the sense of what they think.
There are plenty of democrats here, but I think they're like the democrats of old. They don't want BLM, antifa, way left policies here.

Several texts to the Armstrong and Getty show suggest that long lines are everywhere. One person said that they will not wait the 1.5 hours now and head back at noon and try again.
Conspiracy me thinks that the high Dow is part of the scam so that the dolts who think there will be less of a wait later can rationalize not voting because the stock market said “Trump will win.”

This state has edged left for a decade or so. I'll be surprised if Tulsa and Oklahoma City don't go big for Biden. (Wish I could make a spit sound here, but don't know how to type one. :)
Our town is sort of the same -- we have our evangelicals, but because it was the home of PPCo for so many years, lots and lots of liberals were transferred in here. We still have several thousand jobs here from Conoco-Phillips and Phillips 66, but the decades of transferring in liberals, plus other companies -- a few spin-offs from PPCo, then ABB Automation, 85 offices from around the world, who transfer people in and out, Seimans (glass chromographs was here until 2018, when they transferred to Houston -- have changed the solid conservative base. So there are a lot of liberals here.
This is what is going to happen to all of those Red places that liberals are fleeing to from California, Washington, Oregon, etc., as everyone has been saying -- they bring change, and not the kind you feel safe with.
Posted by: joan | November 03, 2020 at 10:40 AM
Temperamental centrist? Far more likely that Biden is the Trojan Horse for the onward March of cultural Marxism.
Here is the brutal reality. Whatever one thinks of Trump's crude talk, Trump has governed as close to the classical liberal tradition in domestic policy as one could imagine in domestic foreign. In foreign policy and trade, Trump has governed in a manner appropriately modulating one world borderless ersatz elite therapeutic totalitarianism. His administration has brokered historic peace frameworks in the Middle East and the Balkans. He has not converted our foreign policy to Jacksonianism, but has brought a needed Jacksonian element to our internationalism. He is a non-interventionist in a way that keeps our strength and puts our troops in harm's way only when he has concluded it is in our national interest, not the interest of one world fantasy people. He has appointed judges of superior intellect who believe in interpreting, not making law. His governance will be missed if the oligarchs succeed in installing Biden.
For some reason, the thought that keeps going through my head today is the following: There are none so blind as those who will not see.
My prediction: Trump wins today, and Biden is inaugurated. I hope to hell I am wrong in the latter prediction.

Thomas Collins,
For those who are on Twitter, I DEFY anyone to show me the "crude talk" that President Trump produces compared to the vile talk that the leftists produce.
Who calls average voters "c*nts" or tells people to "go suck Trump's d*ck"? Who accuses Trump of having an incestuous affair with his daughter?
President Trump doesn't speak any worse than my father did, who worked construction or maintenance all his life. He seems to get along fine wiith no pearl-clutching from European MP's, other than those who are actual Communists or under the pay of the Chinese.
I have watched almost every speech. He gets along great with Mike Pence, which astounded me when he first named Pence. But yesterday I saw him get a prayer from FRANKLIN GRAHAM on the podium and also support from the gay community due to Trump's treating them with RESPECT.
What I hope is that a lot of democrats have woken up and are seeing the value in FIXING THINGS and PROTECTING CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.

If you knew that you were going to lose your house if you were to publicly state your intention to vote for a Republican, then that's a pretty effective incentive.)

I'm enjoying your play by play!
No wait where I vote (rural NC), but I think that's why I always go at 10:00 am.

Cathy, the big push in the utility area is to snooker as many users as possible to give said utility override ability to your thermostat in return for a lower rate. Google would LOVE to be in that loop.
Anybody who would trust Google with that switch deserves to sweat in Summer and freeze in Winter.
Personally, I have no intention of letting any connected device get between my thermostat and whichever machine is keeping me at 72F.

Typepad won't let me post Sharyl Attkisson's latest--she says if Trump wins the pollsters are finito.

boris, you missed a character
You need to put a / character before the concluding angle bracket. (You showed it in your example.)

My voting precinct has around 7000 registered voters which makes it the largest voting precinct in my county. In 2016 it took me around 10-15 minutes to vote. A friend just called me and said there were probably 1000 people standing in line and that it was taking 2 hours to vote. I view that as a great sign for Trump.

What a closer Trump has turned out to be. Win or lose, no one could have campaigned harder. He seems so tireless. Hard to believe he had covid only a few weeks ago. I am much younger, less overweight than he, and still feel like crap despite staying out of work for two weeks.
I went to work yesterday and was initially excited to be back, but it really wore me out. My company was closed today, but some lame brain called a meeting so I dragged my ass in for a couple of hours this morning and will go back to bed soon. Yes, I'm calling a lid.
Voting turnout is quite high here in the blue hell suburb I live in where Biden Harris signs outnumber Trump signs 30 to 1. My wife went to vote at 6 am and came home because the lines were too long. I went at 10 am and there was still a short line. I could tell from the smug look on the face of the lady in front of me as she put her "I voted" sticker on her shirt that she was likely a Biden voter. Very short ballot, only the Presidential race, Congress, State Senator and State assembly. New York Supreme Court (a misnomer, it's a trial level court) also goes through the farce of electing judges but due to the utterly corrupt system of cross-endorsements, there are judges running on the Repub, Dem, Working Family (nee Acorn) and Conservative party line (a moribund survivor from the Bill Buckley years.)
I am cautious and will not be making any predictions.
Regarding the stock market, I listened to MSNBC in my car on the way home. They say the market being up means Biden will win. Wall Street did pour a lot of money into his campaign, likely because they know he will take care of them. Pray pray pray. Prathaana! Davnen!Ùrnaigh!

I don’t think “the markets” (there’s a reason I put it in scare quotes) are nearly as smart as they think they are.
When so much trading volume is run by algorithms these days, who knows?
