Thanks for your Pieces, clarice, helpful as always.

On WWII, I do wish I'd drawn more stories out of my father before his memory began to diminish. Before that he had been a great raconteur. We did find a wonderful 4-page essay he wrote to his 60th college reunion class on his WWII experiences. He tended to understate the risks he'd been up against (not that they were remotely like the D-Day landing or Battle of the Bulge). In the essay he joked that the most dangerous part of his tour was the passage by ship back to NYC when the ship had mechanical problems during a hurricane. But we know that he was a sitting duck in London during the 1944 rocket bombings, which regularly hit a bit too close for comfort. He also put in flight time as a navigator, which also had some harrowing moments, though they were not combat-related.

Anyway, we'll see what we can find when we empty out his place over the next few weeks.

clarice

Good morning, JOM and thanks.

jimmyk, emptying out the place of someone who lived thru the Depression is awful if my experience cleaning out my mother's is any guide, (Also Roz Chait's book "Can't we talk about something more pleasant") .

The Times notes:
...exit polls suggest that Joe Biden lost ground among Latino, Black and Asian-American voters in 2020 compared with Hillary Clinton’s performance in 2016.

So how to explain the loss? Well, the divide grew greater in Biden's favor among the educated; smarties who went to college voted for Biden, and knuckle-draggers without degrees continued their flight to the Republican party.

Just so you know.

clarice,

Living through the Depression in a Midwestern city, even though my grandparents were employed (teachers and pressman for the Indianapolis Star) made my folks acutely aware of food and clothing shortages, hence the wearing of hand-me-downs and my mother canning tomatoes and sauerkraut, and my dad raising chickens (I had to gather the eggs) and growing huge gardens.

My daughter has a friend whose grandmother was a hoarder and I think it stems from the same thing. "You never know when hard times will come back."

The Covid study I linked the other day,

https://imprimis.hillsdale.edu/sensible-compassionate-anti-covid-strategy/

Suggests 130 million will die from starvation directly as a result of Covid policy, lockdowns, etc.

That is half of the UN projection.

If it is anywhere in the neighborhood of that number, simply demonstrates that while the virus is deadly, pales by comparison to man’s stupidity.

Old Lurker

Times "...exit polls suggest that Joe Biden lost ground among Latino, Black and Asian-American voters in 2020 compared with Hillary Clinton’s performance in 2016..."

We know from previous experience that Exit Polls are about the least accurate measures of actual votes you can get. Just ask President Hillary.

So forget that.

Since it seems undisputable to anyone with eyes and a functioning brain that nobody has a clue, within about 10 million, how many qualified voters actually cast legal ballots for Biden, then it follows we have no clue as to the color of those voters.

So forget that too.

I don't know if it's because of living through the Great Depression, but both of my parents are pack rats. Not to the extent of psycho hoarders, but their places are, shall we say, well-occupied. Good from the point of view of finding keepsakes, but it will be a lot of work to sift through everything.

Using sequestered Dominion Equipment, Ware County ran an equal number of Trump votes and Biden votes through the Tabulator and the Tabulator reported a 26% lead for Biden.

Combined several of his tweets:

Robb Hurst, CPA
@robbhurstCPA

37 Trump votes used in the equal sample run had been "Switched" from Trump to Biden. In actual algorithmic terms, this means that a vote for Trump was counted as 87% of a vote and a vote for Biden was counted as 113% of a vote.

Those conducting the test were so shocked that they ran the same ballots again. The same results appeared.

ONE PIECE OF THE PUZZLE SOLVED. (It is worth noting that this was one County, and on one Tabulator alone.

Dominion Tabulators could have been configured with different algorithms in different Counties or States.) The point is there is now hard evidence of electronic manipulation of the Election.

jimmyk, I recall the periods after each of my parents died as being extremely difficult, sorting through all their personal property, the majority of which was junk, coping with siblings, etc., etc., Despite the fact my dad was an attorney, he died intestate, and so did my mom. Not that intestacy (dying without a will vs dying with a will) means that much legally but to my siblings, none of whom are attorneys, a will would have provided some form of guidance from the decedent as to what his and her wishes were. My dad died without a will because he was fairly young, had a hidden heart defect, and by all appearances thought he had a lot of time left. And all the clutter- old checking account stubs, photographs, out of date clothing, each evoked difficult emotions, each time we put them in the save/don't save pile. So I truly sympathize with what you are going through at this time. I bear no ill will toward either of my deceased parents, they were both wonderful to me, but one can do a big favor to his heirs by decluttering. It's hard for many, just as it is hard for many to accept their own mortality.

So, we now have a "smoking" vote tabulator?

The follow up or non-follow up will be interesting, no?

Plus they seem to be Nevada machines and isn't NV one of the 4 or 5 suspicious states, like GA, WI, PA, et.al.?

MissMarple2

peter,

I only have 2 children and most of my things are already bespoken. I also don't have a will and probably should at least label the items that I am saving. (No worries on dividing up money - ha!)

Some things I have are actually quite valuable, while other items simply are sentimental. I do have a carved soapstone teapot from China which is quite old, given to my mother by Anna Hasselman, who was the first curator of John Herron Art Museum which eventually became the Indianapolis Museum of Art. She was on an expedition to China back in the prior to WWII and brought it back.

My mother roomed with her when she went to Butler University.

MM, a book that was quite popular about thirty years ago, "How to avoid Probate" scared a lot of people out of writing wills. Avoiding probate, the proving of a will, is only an advantage in those states which tax for the probate process. New York doesn't. I have no idea what other states do because it is not my field. For the average middle class homeowner with modest net worth, a will isn't really necessary. Your house will pass to whatever your state's intestacy laws state that they will pass to without the need for a will. You can make your bank accounts in your name, "In trust for.." whomever you want to leave it to. But small items of personal property which often have much greater sentimental and emotional value than big ticket items can result in fights between children. So maybe an informal will or a letter to each of the children would serve a purpose. In my case, one of my siblings was going through an ugly divorce and was financially strapped and my late mother couldn't decide how much to leave her since my sibling's circumstances changed from day to day. Water long under the bridge, we are all fine today.

peter,

That's good information and one I should investigate as to Indiana law. Reading Narciso's comments it occurs to me that we need a "normal people" publishing house for stories and novels which are NOT full of Marxist propaganda or money-laundering vehicles.

I am not certain that one doesn't already exist and that I am not aware of it (quite possible), but it seems to me the untold stories of people who grew up in the 30's through the late 50's would be valuable and interesting, as well as providing a perspective to younger people who haven't gone through hardship.

JimNorCal

Trying to do the math for that Ware GA claim.

Suppose they ran 300 T votes and 300 B votes through the tabulator machine.
For each 100 T votes, 13 are switched to Biden.
The total of 39 switched votes is close to the 37 reported and matches 13% exactly. So maybe they used a slightly smaller number.
Close enough, proceed:
Vote totals should be 300 vs 300.
But are 261 vs 339.
This gives a percentage of roughly 56 to 44.

So ... is that a 26% lead for Biden, as claimed?
I guess maybe they took the 13% discrepancy and said 13% wrong Biden total and a 13% wrong Trump total makes a 13+13=26% overall total?
Seems odd though.

Momto2

Wow! That is really important information!

Yes, MM! It is proof beyond a doubt. I also am reading that the sorry SOS is attempting to erase all data from the machines using the run-off election as an excuse. Yeah, Soylent, that got passed on to me a bit too, much to the chagrin of my spouse.

peter, I'm sorry to hear of your father's early passing. I am very ignorant about estate matters, and it's sort of a learn-on-the-fly process. My father set up a trust, and everything goes into that, and then divided among the four of us. I am the trustee, so there's a huge amount of paperwork dealings with banks, etc. That's just on the finances. Dealing with nutty siblings and the tangible possessions is a whole other thing.

Early in 1945, in a recollection to his school, Dad wrote that the company he was commander of stalled briefly at Wurzburg where he "lost three good men". On through Schweinfurt and south through Munich where, he said, "The mayor surrendered to me by mistake!"

Not in the story, he told us personally that with poor maps and no road signs his jeep driver accidentally pulled in to Munich stopping at the city hall where the mayor was ready to surrender.

In the jeep as a passenger, he says he leaned back on the machine gun for support and it fired one shot into the air, startling everyone.

Oriented once again, they left the mayor to find the rest of their party.

My mother kept everything. I inherited some of that - not hoarding, but I find it hard to toss items. Last year, when the kids were away at school I began clearing out items. Now, I keep everything.

I need to clear out a room today. It’s full of dvds, videos, games, etc. It will be quite a chore deciding what to toss, and what to keep. And donations are not allowed these days. Just another stupid rule making it hard to clean up.

Husband and I swear we will never leave our children the mess my parents left my brothers and me. They were wonderful parents, but it was quite stressful working it all out. My mother's condo was a modest 2 bedroom one with lots of cabinets and deep closets. I spent 3 full days filling over 3 dumpsters worth of crap, gave away lots of useful items to neighbors and maintenance people, filled two large packing containers full of clothing for the move. My son has filled up a large storage room here with his junk and left everything else in his room and will not let me dispose of it or get rid of it himself.

Ignatz,

There is a reason that Robin Hood has remained a folk hero in Britain (and for a while in the US) for nearly 1000 years. I grew up watching the series on TV back in the 50's.

"Robin Hood, Robin Hood riding through the glen,
Robin Hood, Robin Hood, with his band of men.
Feared by the bad, loved by the good,
Robin Hood, Robin Hood, Robin Hood."

I think I rattled on about this the other day, but the existence of folk heroes is foolishly discounted by the progs. I think it is one of the reasons Trump is so well-loved.

After all, Robin Hood was originally the Earl of Locksley!

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

My parents both lived through the depression in a poor rural area and neither one of them were pack rats or hoarders.
They were both very thrifty. My pop's trip to the dump seldom resulted in a dead head return trip; dead head for any of you non truckers out there being a leg of a truck trip run without a load. He did have his own backyard dump but it was in constant use for parts and fabrication.
And I have to confess, like amom's mammy, I do have a stash of neatly folded bread bags in addition to my zip locs. :)

Old Lurker

Repeating an earlier observation.

The absolute best thing Trump can do now is be sworn back in on Jan 20.

The only other task if that fails is to dump EVERYTHING out into the sunlight for all to see, regardless of who it hurts or might hurt. Then whatever the people decide to do, that will be the will of the people.

There is no other way he can ride off into the sunset expecting any legacy that might survive into the history books. Having seen the mess and not fixed it is one thing. Having seen the mess and letting it remain in hiding "because" is unforgivable to me.

Old Lurker

Clarice "My son has filled up a large storage room here with his junk and left everything else in his room and will not let me dispose of it or get rid of it himself."

I TOLD you how to solve that years ago.

Rent a self storage unit and move EVERYTHING of his into it. Prepay X (6?) months rent. Send him the key and tell him when the six months is up.

Marlene

My late father-in-law was a pack rat. After his death, my mother-in-law was overwhelmed. Hubby was left with the task of sorting thru boxes and boxes of books and files and receipts and minutes of meetings from Rotary that were 30 years old. I helped him go thru all that stuff and at times it was bittersweet. His father had saved everything! Only one of his four siblings wanted a few things and we packed a box and sent it to her. I remember one snowy day at the cabin that we built a bonfire and threw most of the stuff in the fire.
His mother downsized last year before moving to independent living. Hubby told her in no uncertain terms to give her jewelry to his sisters NOW, because no way in hell was he going to deal with his three sisters. :)

HA! My advantage is that I know most of the stuff I have probably will go to auction, anyway. (I already sold a bunch when I moved several years ago.)

Daughter only wants the 1920's secretary with the cubbyholes and miniature door and glass cabinet top (from what is known as Georgian Revival) and my son will get the American Gothic hand-carved walnut washstand with marble top, which he remembers my grandpa refinishing.

Most of the other furniture, crystal, and Depression glassware is long gone, and I don't think either of the kids would have liked it, anyway. Daughter has more modern tastes and I have no idea how my daughter-in-law's tastes run.

I have had to clear out four houses in the last 8 years. And boy howdy I am looking at my own now with a more critical eye. Things don't stop aging because you put them away. I have seen so many "perfectly good" items become roach-poop covered trash up in the attic. Please, give things away *now* while they are useable.
Here in the Greater Atlanta area Goodwill has become awful. Forget them.
But:
The Salvation Army is A#1, especially if you have those items in the "all it needs is..." category. A category that seduces you to put in back in the closet to fix....someday. They will fix things NOW and you get your house back.

The Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home is a catholic-run medical facility which will gladly accept any leftover medical supplies (bandages, pads, skin protectants) you may have.
And of course estate sales/garage sales are still going gangbusters here - with masks.

Google around your area, there are any number of small organizations doing large good. You can help. You're not losing stuff, you're gaining space!

jimmyk

compared to Jimmy's problem on the UWS, is that we could have a dumpster at the front door.

jimmyk: " Good from the point of view of finding keepsakes, but it will be a lot of work to sift through everything."

Sift through everything :) -- I was 'worrying' out loud to our daughter about my 'keepsakes' (my old newspaper columns, some writing awards, our children and grandchildren's grade school and even toddler artwork, all precious stuff like this), and our daughter said "Mom, that's what black garbage bags are for." :) I smile every time I think of that.

We do have thousands and thousands of dollars worth of china and antiques I bought when we lived in England, but that will probably be auctioned. Our son told me the auctions are great -- they come in and trash all of the junk and only bother with the good things. It was as if he was 'brushing his hands clean of the work after we're gone' -- silly me, I thought he'd like the Old Imari Royal Crown Derby full set of china I saved for him. :)

...we need to be ready to move if knees become an issue.

anonamom, that is depressing - my wife has two fake hips and one fake knee, my knees aren't feeling so great themselves, and we plan on doing plenty of traveling. It's too cruel to imagine that infirmities that come with age could actually short-circuit plans, hmmpph.

Dammit.
