Sen. Josh Hawley commits to objecting to accepting Joe Biden as the next President. This will force a floor debate and a vote Biden will win but it lets Hawley position himself for 2024 as the Trumpiest candidate not named Trump.
Sen. Sasse of the Never Trump "Come home to reality" wing of the party (Wing?!? More like a stray crumpled feather...) lays out his concerns with this sort of grandstanding.

So New Years Eve is the only anniversary we celebrate and this is the 56th year since our 1st date. It was a party at a buddy’s mom’s place. He had a 1st date that same night and they are still married.
I guess it is ours too! Only it was a double date, and I was with my husband's roommmate, and he was with my BFF. I don't know when the trade got made, but it was the right one--a total of 85 years of marital bliss resulted for the four of us.
I think our morning coffee discussion has presented itself. Might need to Facetime the other couple, to get the details of this straightened out.
If I am recalling things correctly--it was 47(!!!) years ago.

Good morning 2021!
I think I made it to about 10 and just flopped out.
But since Times Square was empty, i didn’t miss much plus Mrs. JiB is in Key Biscayne with Frederick and friends. Fireworks since dusk on the beach is all i got along with a glass of champagne.

Yesterday, local talk news station played our police chief asking us to NOT fire shots in the air last night to celebrate, with a couple of victims of those falling bullets testifying "Yes, they can injure people" too.
So I went to bed around nine thirty instead. ;-)

The part of Joe Rogan that I like best is when he questions a guest about their deviation from the conventional wisdom. He is gentle but persistent.
Example, when he discusses mask wearing with Berenson. I avoid masks whenever possible but I would have found the questioning a challenge.
For the first year ever we didn't gut it out till midnight, instead turned in early. We'll be up early to head to nearby Mission Peak with another couple to walk up to the summit. As the traditional Chinese New Year wish goes "May each step take you higher".
Of course ... once you're at the top, each subsequent step takes you lower ... these proverbs only get you so far ...

2020 is such a mixed bag for us, but I am most grateful for my nuclear family. Everyone really showed their best selves over this long year - between shutdowns, my injury that put an enormous burden on everyone else, my son's plans being completely derailed - I'm so proud of our kids, who have stepped up, and I love my husband dearly for leaning into the "for worse" part of marriage with his usual kindness and grace.
I can't wait to visit family and travel and get back to my usual physical outings on paddle board and skates!

Happy New Year all. Doing a yoga class later which seems a nice way yo start 2021 and then making good luck soup with black eyed peas, frozen okra and other yummy things. Probably will throw in some lacinato kale too in case last night's chard with bacon wasn't enough green to ensure reasonable prosperity this year.
Had to laugh at the grocery store yesterday after I realized I needed more chard than the 2 bunches I had. Fresh Market was picked over in greens with only iceberg lettuce left. After 2020, people are bringing back the southern traditions in earnest apparently with many having no idea how to cook collards, kale, or turnip greens.
We have eaten a lot of greens during the pandemic as nature's way of immunizing against ANY virus.
CCGirl-when your fil gets home I can post the famous bone broth recipe I developed when I had pneumonia about 5 years ago and realized I needed some way of creating an expectorant function to get my lungs clear. Grated ginger and horseradish make excellent additions to accomplish that. Red's best college friend in paris actually called her for the recipe when she was feeling under the weather .

https://lockdownsceptics.org/lest-we-forget-life-is-not-non-death/ is very good.
An excerpt--
Make no mistake: when an old woman is denied the small comfort of her sons’ arms in the face of her husband’s death, it heralds the end of all the comforts of life. For, far from being only non-death, life – real, human life – unfolds in the face of death, comprising just the right amount of remembering death to give it its rhythm and urgency and just the right amount of forgetting death to give it its joy and purpose.
Life – real, human life – is not life or death. It is life and death; or, as the philosophers say, life-towards-death.
The Guardian newspaper ran a headline for months this year – So Much Living Left To Do – under which were written accounts of those who had died with COVID-19. Yet the average age of Covid death in England and Wales is more than 82 years. Older than the average life expectancy. And of those who died younger than this, almost all had co-morbidities. Those who died with COVID-19 this year did not have so much living left to do. They had, almost universally, very little living left to do. Their lives were not unimportant. But their lives were coming to an end.
But when life is merely non-death, there is no nuance, no context, no qualification. There is not more life and less life, there is not better quality of life and worse quality of life. There is simply life – absolute life. And therefore no limit to the amount of living left to do.

HA! I thought to wean myself from the internet and get an old movie to watch. I REALLY wanted to watch "Independence Day" (1996) and it is not available except by paying for it, which I won't do.
Then I got to thinking that maybe that movie is in high demand, which also would be an interesting clue. That's how I discovered Guiliani's tweets last night before going to bed to the sound of fireworks and gunshots, with the old dog curled up next to the space heater (she's 18) and one of the cats in bed with me scared out of her mind.
I suppose I should think about taking the tree down today but everything is covered in ice and my daughter put all of the tubs for storage out in the garage.

If the John Roberts on the flight log was some Joe Blow regular guy not affiliated with the government then there would be no need to keep that information a secret from the public.
If the John Roberts on the flight log is the Chief Justice of the SCOTUS then that makes it a national security matter and justifies making the flight logs classified.

Byrne has been attending strategy sessions at the White House on how to fight back against the stolen election. That pushes the needle in the direction that the John Roberts on the flight log is the Chief Justice and that Team Trump wants everyone to know that. If someone has dirt on Roberts and uses it to control how he votes on SCOTUS then that is obviously a big deal.

It's kind of funny to listen to the progs say 'but he lost in court 59 times so there isn't any voter fraud'.
If there isn't any voter fraud shouldn't the progs have been on Trump's side seeking recounts and forensic audits to make it plain there was zero fraud? It's not like the Trump family would be doing the audits.
Instead 59 times the progs did everything they could to prevent the one thing that would shut Trump and his unspeakable supporters up.
It's so contrary to good government and common sense it might even make one think that a party that can not only tolerate but champion a blatant organized crime outfit like the Chicago Machine, smother a story about the obvious corruption of Joe Biden and his reprobate son and brother and to this day still act as though the Clintons are not unindicted coconspirators of just about every political crime of the last 30 or 40 years actually did engage in systematic vote fraud.
Mark Elias is just another Bruce Cutler.

How could John Roberts of Fox affect national security? The winter after my folks were married and before I came along, they went to a winter resort with friends for a brief vacation. (I think it was Pokegon but am not sure.)
Anyway, they rented a toboggan and my dad was in charge of steering. They were headed for a steep turn and my dad, not realizing that nobody else would understand, yelled "Lean!" and mom and the other two couples did - only the women leaned left and my dad and the other guys leaned right, so that the upshot was they went straight ahead and ran off the track at the curve, flying head over heels into the snow!
Luckily, no one was hurt. My dad always told the story with appropriate gestures and demonstrated the leaning by using his fingers intertwined, which makes it funnier in my memory than it probably seems here.

Getting my wife a smart phone was one of the dumbest things I've done.

Jane,
This is because you, like most of us here (other than rse, who has dedicated herself to discovering this insidious epidemic of ignorance) assumed that those who came behind us got the same type of education that we did.
Even my daughter and son don't know things I would have thought they would have learned. And I am not talking science or math, but basic things like the Spanish settling South America and Mexico before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth, the Oklahoma Land Rush, etc. (I ran across my great Uncle Louis' obituary from the Stillwater, Oklahoma newspaper and discovered he had ridden a fast horse and claimed a fairly large chunk of land around Stillwater. (I may have known this and forgotten it, although I do remember when he came to visit my grandparents in the early 50's and embarrassed my mother at the State Fair by going up to livestock exhibitors and poking them in the chest with his cane and saying "Louis Mossler, Stilllwater, Oklahoma! Who are YOU?")
My daughter didn't even know that there had been an Oklahoma Land Rush!

CH:
Your little grand-daughter is just darling! Glad your daughter’s life is going along in such a positive.
The job of a parent doesn’t end until they no longer need you which means it continues on and on.
Ccgirl:
So glad fil is recuperating.
Jimmyk, Steph and RSE,
These holidays must have been hard for you after the loss of a parent. You are all such wonderful daughters and son.
Robin:
Glad you are on the mend.
JIB:
Hope you are relieved about Frederick getting his license.
Enjoy his time at home.
DrJ:

MJW:
Always good to hear the voice of reason.
Here is hoping President Trump prevails as new allegations about tampering with military ballots has been revealed.
Happy New Year to all.
Rocco:
So glad to hear someone else prays the rosary regularly.

Jane, I have been corrected! Wayland, not Woburn. I know a few people from Andover.
Just completed the walks. In all I encountered about twenty people, all wearing masks except two! My son and a woman who went to college with me, and later was my youngest’s amazing 5th grade teacher. Both were running. Stay positive ccgirl! 😂
