Tom--

Our problems in atl developed in afternoon, as if whatever damage was caused coupled to increased volume sent cell signals oddly. It was telling me over and over that my mom's number (or code) was incorrect and to look it back up.

Been her land line number for decades.

Red called my fil on his landline and machine could not recognize NUmber and insisted it was "out of area."

Those were yesterday afternnon about two.

This is a follow-up article by the retired navy intelligence officer, J.E. Dyer. It was originally posted on December 21, but I never could find the complete article, although I saw it referred to.

This is worth reading. The upshot is whether Trump is establishing new intelligence services and allowing the old ones (CIA and FBI, for example) to wither on the vine because they are too compromised.

BuffyUK, One funny thing about meeting English doctors. A friend recommended a family doctor. He was on Wimpole Street. The first couple of years it was mostly one of our children sick, just general illnesses. Our son kept having tonsillitis. About the time he was in the 2nd grade our doctor told us, your son has had countless tonsil infections, I can't seem to clear it up. This will affect his schoolwork as he gets older -- he's missing school -- will get behind. It's time to have them removed. (I was surprised because at that time in the US, no doctor thought a child should have the surgery.) Anyway, our doctor said, I'm referring you to a surgeon. He's on Harley Street. He made the appointment. We arrived that day for the initial exam. As I walked up to ring the bell, the brass plate on his door said "Mr. Smith" (can't remember his name). I sort of drew back -- I thought, 'he said he was referring us to another doctor, a surgeon, but this man isn't a doctor -- he's a mister.' I didn't want to take our son inside. I didn't want to go inside. I thought, 'what the hell is going on?' Finally I worked up my courage and thought, surely Dr. Barretto (our doctor) wouldn't send us to a quack, so we went in -- that was the day I learned surgeons were on a level above ordinary doctors. :)

Surprised and amused me at my naive ignorance.

There was a lot I had to learn over the years about the difference in our countries. :)

if the switching station was heavily damaged they would have to reroute the whole region possibly into other states.

If the switching station was heavily damaged how did it continue to function with no interrupted service for 5+ hours? The outages all started about 5-6 hours later. In your scenario wouldn't rerouting be what AT&T does to restore service.

joan

TK: Your post ... simply disheartening and breathtaking ... as has been the last four+ years.

"There is no law in America now. The rot came from the top down, and it will surely rend this nation into factions. Invasion will follow. You can blame the United States Supreme Court for all of it. The Court is not a bastion of justice. The Court is a political animal. And it has failed us."

A person has to make their own happiness -- has to make their own peace with what they can't control or change, or else we'd go mad.

As my husband and I use to say to each other when things turned sour or south 'Bad Day At Black Rock*' -- but we always chuckled because the setbacks weren't the shattering kind. This exposure of what our SCOTUS and our Justice Department is truly like is almost too big to comprehend and absorb.

There is a book review in The Times this Saturday, written by a guy who was a judge at Nuremberg, He presided in cases involving less prominent nazis, the business leaders, and lawyers for instance, who supported things like the Holocaust. He couldn't put his head round how they allowed themselves to think they were doing the right thing.

Jordan Peterson recommends a book "Ordinary Men", which outlines how German policemen were changed from kindhearted family men to shooting naked pregnant Jewish Poles in the back of the head.

I've heard Peterson talk about this, saying harsh things like we all have it in us to be perpetrators.

I'm paraphrasing but it all starts with virtue signaling. If the way to be safe in society is to show you hate the Jews, how do you really really show you do? You ratchet up the cruelty.

On Monday, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) taking heed of Joe Biden’s public pronouncements indicating he would rejoin the Paris Agreement and rejoin the Iran nuclear deal, sent a letter to President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that would head Biden off at the pass, asking Trump to submit the deals as treaties, thus forcing any such actions by Biden to be submitted to the Senate for approval.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--He couldn't put his head round how they allowed themselves to think they were doing the right thing...
...I've heard Peterson talk about this, saying harsh things like we all have it in us to be perpetrators.--

This is exactly the process I was referring to a day or two ago of the mentally ill prog cult leaders manipulating, coercing and persuading otherwise not irrational people to see the world through the leaders' eyes. I'm convinced it is a cultural thing. Pre critical mass, when it's a bunch of nutjobs in a beer hall, it's a putsch and they end up in prison. Once they have tunneled into society and society undergoes some convulsion to amplify the effect of their tunneling, what people previously properly dismissed as nutjobbery suddenly becomes the cause de jure and people can't wait to sign up to what they just recently dismissed as crazy.
That is precisely what is happening to our culture. Suddenly anyone who believes marriage is between a man and woman, a position Hillary and Barry held just a few short years ago, is now a pariah who no right thinking person will be seen next to should the person be so rash at to actually voice the now unspeakable opinion.
Rational people who just a short time ago said they were for equal rights for women and endorsed Title IX as invaluable now believe men should be able to defeat girls on the track and then take a shower with them after the meet.

A culture going crazy is a snowball on a steep slope and they suffer the same fate as the snowball when it encounters the immovable mountain opposite the slope they're careening down.

I know Rod Dreher's anti Trumpism is irritating beyond measure but I'm relinking his important column, No Families, No Children, No Future, on our culture in the grip of the ideologues someone linked above.
The clueless comments in reaction to it are further sign of the rot he describes.

From a comment in article Ig pointed to: I saw a line in a TV show last night that made me think about how this narrative is really shifting.

A narrative is what others would have us believe, not necessarily what each of us might think, or even what might be worth thinking.

More important now than before, we must encourage people to think — not just for themselves, but think, period — to defend individuality from being overrun.

To stand up to pressure that is illogical — in the sense it is not open to be logically argued against — and smile, sends that the battle for the mind has been engaged and they cannot win.

You can Karen me. You can even beat me up. But you cannot change my mind. I am the only individual allowed that privilege. Now go play with the other children until you grow up.

This wasn't the first time that AT&T switch center got knocked offline this year. Earlier in 2020 tornadoes hit Nashville. The AT&T switch center either got hit or lost power due to the tornado. With the tornado the outage was immediate. With the bomb the outage didn't start until 5+ hours later.

Why would a 63 year old, blow up Nashville?

MissMarple2

sbwaters,

My local friend and I were discussing this failure of people to actually think. She has one child living in California who is absolutely terrified of Covid 19, while another came home from the UK with his wife who has relatives all over our state and states north. They have been going from her house to the various relatives and then will go back to the UK next week.

That child's only concern is if he will be able to get to his home from Heathrow due to the lockdown. He sort of rolls his eyes when she points out some of the things we discuss here, but at least he listens and occasionally agrees with her. He doesn't have time to follow all of this as we do.

She and I both discussed how we get our news from the internet, avoiding MSM. Five years ago I had Fox on from when I got up until when I went to bed, because I thought they were fairly impartial and maybe leaned a little right, which was a breath of fresh air. After the 2016 election, when we moved here, we dropped cable due to the expense and I paid little attention to what they said, and even less once they unmasked themselves.

We also discussed how what was held up as "reasonable debate between opposing sides, with compromises being agreed to" in Congress we now see as horse trading for money and favors, with no regard for the interests of the average citizen. Thus, when something shows up like that disgusting Covid relief bill with all of the pork embedded in it, we don't accept it as a reasonable compromise, but rather ask uncomfortable questions about the money spent.

It's also why we aren't panicky over the virus, as it's simply not that dangerous. (I still think I had it last February.) That tweet from the Jerusalem Post that Melinda posted earlier today may explain why those homeless people in California seem to not get the virus, while the Californians secluded in their homes and avoiding being outdoors DO get it; no ultra violet light!

Oh well, lots of rambling which I hope supported your point!

Tom R

I guess the only other explanation is that it took them 5 hours to figure out how to intentionally fuck you over.

It should be fairly obvious so I don't know why its so difficult for you to understand.

When the switch center gets knocked offline due to damage every direct customer that the switch center supports immediately loses service until AT&T figures out to how to reroute bandwidth from other parts of the country. That is what happened when the tornado hit and it is what you would normally expect to occur again when the bomb exploded.

Instead the exact opposite happened. The switch center gets damaged perhaps even destroyed yet the direct customers for that switch center didn't immediately lose service like they did when the tornado hit.

When you combine that with all the conspiracy theories going around about the building being owned by the company that owns Dominion voting systems then it sounds fishy to me. You are more than welcome to think the 5+ hour delay before the outage kicked in is perfectly normal.

Pinandpuller

"A fire reignited overnight at the damaged facility, forcing an evacuation.

The company is focusing on restoring power to the property. “Currently, our teams are on site working with safety and structural engineers,” the statement said. “They have drilled access holes into the building and are attempting to reconnect power to critical equipment. Technical teams are also working as quickly as possible on rerouting additional services to other facilities in the region to restore service.”

Sounds to me like they had some problems arise after the blast, some kind of cascade failure.

I used to live across the street from the Englewood, NJ, five-floor NJ Bell central office. I could see in the windows on several floors. Never saw anybody in there. All that stuff in there is automated with only a few people on each shift in normal operations.

All of the CO's are built with standardized capabilities. That includes disaster recovery, but a major restoration takes time. The back-up generators aren't built to handle the full electrical load.

Since it's an AT&T central office I assume all their loops are long distance and they probably run their wireless service from there. Thus customer's computer networks for POS are down in the area. As for the wireless network I assume the regional brain is impaired.

I don't think AT&T is going to be forthcoming with details for security reasons.
