General Austin is an American hero and a solid pick for Defense Secretary. Especially when the leading alternative was a woman (undoubtedly polished and brilliant) who has made a career fighting through the swamps and trenches of academia, think tanks, and the Pentagon bureaucracy.
Austin and Biden overlapped in Iraq in 2010-2011 when Biden was leading the US effort down the drain. But they also overlapped when Austin began leading the pushback against ISIS, so there's that.

Barack Ebola, jeenyus;
I'm surprised he didn't start yakkin about profit and overhead in that there marketplace.
To paraphrase Milton Friedmn just who are these angels who have that capacity, Barry? The other sooper jeenyuss gatekeepers like you who our tech overlords appoint?
This is actually a very unpleasantly valuable lesson for those of us awake. We are watching the accelerating transformation of garden variety social liberals into literal totalitarians in real time as they convince themselves or provide themselves with cover that their rapidly evolving rhetoric and beliefs are not what they very clearly are. In the space of four or five years, opinions they disagree with, opinions long held by vast swaths of the country, often by the budding totalitarians themselves just a few years ago, have gone from good faith disagreements to unpleasant opinions, to oppressive world views, to disputed and destructive privilege and bigotry to deranged misperceptions and hateful inaccuracies to just plain old lies and falsehoods as told by Nazis. Fascist falsehoods that must be quashed and silenced.
And part of the reason that evolution is so rapid is because these are the logical extensions of their ideology that lie dormant inside until activated. The activation is IMO the peeling away of a false front they adopt, usually subconsciously, to adapt to cultural norms that they in fact disagree with and deep down despise. Change the norms and their prepackaged radicalism is ready to pop out at a moment's notice. They might have been wearing a Brooks Brother's suit or LL Bean flannel PJs but underneath they've always got their Chairman Mao suit on in case of emergency.
And that acceleration of craziness leads directly to their inability to understand or their rabid longing for things like JimSV's observation from the PL comments section at 12:49;
--“I wonder if the left, and the court realize this is a Hail Mary to prevent a civil war, not to keep trump in office. 30% of democrats and 80+% of republicans think the election was stolen. That is a loss of legitimacy of the nation’s governments from the state level through the federal.”--

I don't either. He makes good points, then goes down the "DC is laid out on Satanic occult symbols/geometry" path and while I think there is a great amount of evil in DC, I don't know that something like that will help.
Maybe Wood is right about everything.
Would you have believed a few years ago that high-ranking members of the House and Senate were compromised by Chinese Communist spies who'd worked for them for years, and when it was uncovered, there would be absolutely zero consequences?
Would you have believed that a family of Pakistani scammers would be allowed to run the IT departments for dozens of Congresspeople, steal God only knows how much sensitive data, as well as millions of dollars, and be allowed to leave the country with no consequence, and the Congresspeople who hired them and compromised national security would face zero repercussions for it?
Would you have believed that every Democrat, many Republicans and all our major media would approve of sending billions of dollars in cash to a terrorist regime that openly admitted it would use the money to fund more terrorism and kill American citizens?
I could go on and on and on...it's clear that, even with what we know now, our government and our "elites" are SO much more corrupt and compromised than we can imagine. There's nothing I wouldn't believe at this point.
Posted by: James D. | December 09, 2020 at 11:21 AM
I also suspect Wood is right about a lot of this stuff, but I don't think it's helping at this moment in time. We really need to keep our eye on the ball and we need to focus our collective public-facing arguments on those that can most realistically be believed/demonstrated. Plenty of time for satanic cult stuff starting Jan 21..

Good morning JOM
Regarding yesterday’s discussion about the Dec 14th day for naming electors and the constitution stating the date is to be set by the congress. What if a specific congress neglects to set the date. I mean can a congress 150 years ago set procedures for the congress today? ISTM that this needed to be done by each election year congress? If congress can “reset” the date, then it is not permanently fixed by the first constitutionally set date. Is so, is there even a “set” date if this congress has never “set” it? IANAL but I do get into the tiny details of contracts. I don’t see how one congress can bind the next ones, unless all successors yield. Senate can set a new date = 3 working days after all litigation is settled but no later than 3 working days prior to date constitutionally mandated for new president to be inaugurated. If house does not act, then let the court (supreme) decide
As the above is probably off-base for thousands of reasons, it is obvious that this construction exec is not a constitutional lawyer.
Also obvious, I am about a day behind.

Our editors do not know or care whether a letter writer is a subscriber or not. Community contributions are in short supply at our small newspaper.
One gentlemen writes every month and we run it, although I know him to be basically intelligent, he insists on crafting letters that are rhetorically deficient in the classical sense. We still run his flawed letters.
After the fall of Rome, Aristotelian rhetoric became separated from its requirement to reflect reality.
Classical Rhetoric consisted of invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery. Unfortunately, in the 1500s, invention and arrangement—the ordering and testing of evidence—were removed leaving Rhetoric absent its honesty, to focus on presentation alone.

It seems that the watch word these days is patience. We have to wait and see what the Supreme Court does. Perhaps that is true. We certainly can't move forward until the Court decides on the cases before it.
What troubles me is what the Supreme Court is not doing and what may be reluctant to do. I recall this same reluctance in 2000 during the Bush v. Gore case. Perhaps the Court will surprise us all and take a stand in the numerous and obvious problems with the 2020 election. So far, the lower courts have relied on process to avoid tackling the issues head on. If the Supreme Court does not fulfill its responsibilities wrt these cases, the words on its building should be changed from "Equal Justice Under Law" to "Let This Cup Pass From Me".

Barbara, I agree and I have of course also worried about what the court won't do. But then I think about it from the other angle: if they don't act on this, what is that saying? That would effectively be saying "sure, any individual in a position of power in a state can think of any reason they want to just unilaterally without the legislature make up a rule about how voting can be conducted, and there's absolutely no consequence or recourse to that. You can unilaterally "count" "votes" without the opposing party present and just declare whatever winner you want and there's no problem with that. IANAL so there might be specific legal nitty gritty issues with this TX suit that tank the effort, but at a high level, that's kinda the gist. and that would be... (insert head exploding emoji here)

A capitalist walked into a bar, sat down between Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders. Just then the 10 o’clock news came on. The lead story was of a man on a ledge of a skyscraper preparing to commit suicide by jumping off of it. Bernie looked at the capitalist and said, “You think he’ll jump?” The capitalist replied, “Yep. I bet he will.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie both shot back, “Well, we bet that he won’t.” The capitalist put 10 bucks on the bar, said, “You’re on.” Just as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders placed their money on the bar, the guy did a swan dive off the building. He took a plunge toward room temperature. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie were very upset, bitterly, bitterly tried not to hand their money over to the capitalist. They didn’t want to do it. They felt somehow they had been cheated, screwed, tricked.
With a slight smile, the capitalist said, “Look. I can’t take your money. Keep your money. I saw this earlier on the 5 o’clock news, and I knew the guy jumped. It’s the 10 o’clock news. It happened earlier today. I’ve already seen this.” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shot back, “Well, we saw it, too, but we didn’t think he’d do it again.”

An emotional Idaho health official had to abruptly leave a Zoom meeting where they were voting on a local mask mandate after her 12-year-old son called to say dozens of armed anti-mask protesters were surrounding her home and banging on the door.
Ada County Commissioner Diana Lachiondo (left) tearfully interrupted the Central District Health's online board meeting on Tuesday night, saying that the anti-mask protesters were outside her home.
Lachiondo, who was at her office at the Ada County Courthouse, initially excused herself so she could call police.
She interrupted again just moments later saying she had to rush home to be with her son. The board had been expected to vote on a four-county mask mandate in Idaho's most populated region.
The Boise Police Department later confirmed that anti-mask protesters had gathered outside at least three board members' homes, as well as the health department building (right), while the meeting was underway.

Go ahead and wipe it with a cloth, Mel. It probably needs a good cleaning:)
BTW, my son, Frederick, besides learning "cliff rescue & life boatmanship" is also building a work shed using particle board walls, corrugated steel roofing and bricked exterior. Co-curricular at Atlantic College.
He is printing up business cards as a qualified handy-man for the summer.
