Just waiting for everyone to show up.

Lifetime ban?

Robin,

I just showed up. Having a good old Irish fry with Frederick and Mrs. JIB.

Merry Christmas🎅

Jim Eagle

WaPo story Robin linked is paywalled. I get all my UK news from the Daily Torygraph and Euro news from Le Monde and De Staandard.

Robin, eff 'em all

Morning, Jack! How lovely that your teenager is up this early on his holiday. Is he still on UK time?

henry

Yes, new Kung Flu that defeats vaccine.

Convenient.

Jim Eagle

Robin,

Yep. UK time but that wont last long😁

Yay! More fear to sell, more power for bureaucrats to usurp!

Quick, toss Fauci in! It’s the “scientific” way to stop Covid.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

A bug virtually harmless to virtually anyone not already virtually dead spreads faster than other variants which means we get this over with faster than otherwise?
How about they inject everyone with it instead of the vaccine?

Another Bob

“The vaccine is, also, not terribly scary.”

Objection your honor, assumes facts not in evidence. May well be the case, I don’t think we know just yet. I’m a little skeptical of development processes that get mixed up in politics.

I’m also trying hard not to think certain thoughts that this “new” strain magically gets lots of attention the day after the vaccine appears.

Davod

From previous thread.

The Pope will declare Biden a saint for the miracle of January 20, 2021. COVID will disappear from the world. The declaration will be made quickly because the miracle will be seen on TV screens around the world.

Cases and deaths will continue at the same rate.

Willowed and on topic:

So now Cuomo wants a travel ban? I thought that was stupid and racist when Trump imposed one back in January.

The “new” strain is not new, and has probably been here for a while.

If I understood him correctly, the mRNA vaccines should be equally effective with mutant strains of Covid 19.

Young Lurker

Good morning everyone! TM, thank you for linking to the Science article about the "new" strain, which I agree is probably not as new as we think and is probably also all over the place already.

Like Buckeye, my understanding is that the vaccines should still work against this strain. Furthermore, a neat feature of the mRNA approach is that it can be tweaked along with the mutations in the virus. I don't know whether that would require additional clinical trials. I also don't love how that could naturally lead to lots more "opportunities" to vaccinate for thing after thing. But in the event of an awful mutation/turn for the worse, a plus.

I also wondered about the "sudden, unprecedented" ~20 new mutations all at once.

And I also thought, "ok great maybe this will be over faster now!"

It's almost like we all think alike on JOM.. ;-)

Narciso

Well yes what does 'appears' mean and how big id the variance before antibodies arent effective.

Old Lurker

YL "It's almost like we all think alike on JOM.. ;-)"

On the total continuum of all thought, yes, yes we do. And we like it that way.

Within our little slice of that Bell Curve, we have a significant variability of Optimism:Pessimism.

The shorthand for that, here, is The Ledge vs everybody who ridicules those in the Ledge Bar each evening.

The research Jr. has been involved with is focused on genetic modification of specific viruses to selectively attack specific cancer cells.

Yes, that scary genetic engineering stuff.

I quizzed him once about the safety, his dry response was, “No more dangerous than dying from cancer”.

Neo

I just loved that Science article .. NOT.

It displays everything I hate about journalism without being partisan. Mainly, it tells us nothing. Is there a name for this branch of the SARS-COv2 tree ? It's not there.

It's like reading a report on an election and the best they give you are percentages. People don't vote percentage (except maybe Maine). Or a court ruling that doesn't mention the name of the suit or the judge.

Narciso

Lockdowns dont slow the spread under normal circumstances why do they reach for that mallet?

BREAKING! Do mask mandates work? Our analysis below.
We looked at cases on days where mask mandates were in place vs when they were not. We calculated the cases per day adjusted for population and:

WITH MASK MANDATE:
27 cases per day per 100K people

NO MASK MADATE
17 cases

Okay8, let me get this straight. We got the Lockerbie bomber. Didn’t that happen in 1988?

So can we count on Obama going to jail in 2035?

Brussels sprouts need bacon to be palatable.

Nah, just butter and plenty of salt. In my Big Three of fave veggies - broccoli, asparagus, brussels sprouts.

Old Lurker

Buffy "Am I the only one that thinks every type of high tech spy gear will be used in Georgia on the 5th?"

You are assuming the GOPe learns anything, ever.

There is no reason to think that.

https://thenationalpulse.com/commentary/cortes-if-biden-were-sure-of-his-victory-hed-welcome-transparency/

Cortes was in charge of the Hispanic outreach and gives really good short videos with a white board, explaining complicated issues with clear, easy to understand points. This is a good article asking about states and areas which won't allow transparency on things like voter turnout or error rates on absentee ballots.

Jane

Buffy, 2 questions:

Attorney General William Barr said he won't appoint a special counsel to investigate President Trump's claims of election fraud or allegations against Hunter Biden

BuffyUK

Jane, my sister pointed me towards JOM. I've been reading here for at least four years, finally got the courage to jump in.

We live west of London, in tier 3. Lock down is a hideous joke on the lower orders. None of the elite will be inconvenienced.

MissMarple2

My local friend who just got back from California has a married son who arrived just a couple of days ago from the UK (his wife has been here a week visiting relatives in another state). Now she is worried about his travel BACK to the UK so she is going crazy dealing with Newsom's edicts in California and the stuff Prime Minister Johnson is doing in the UK.

BuffyUK

Henry, Barr's too busy going to leaving parties before Wednesday.

hrtshpdbox

Attorney General William Barr said he won't appoint a special counsel to investigate President Trump's claims of election fraud or allegations against Hunter Biden "I'm a big loser, just like all the rest".

Miss Marple, I suggest flying to Dublin, taking the 2 hour bus to Belfast and flying, or else taking the overnight "coach", via Stranraer, from there.

JimNorCal

"The UK is being locked out of Europe"

First they don't want U.K. to leave.
Then they don't want them to stay, so complicated!

https://www.aspeninstitute.org/blog-posts/a-job-quality-agenda-for-the-next-administration/

We need a new vision for work, one that is rooted in the ideals of freedom, fairness, and universal human dignity as much as in the persistent pursuit of economic efficiency. For most Americans, work is both a means to support oneself and one’s family and an important source of human connection and social identity. Success at work can expand access to resources that in turn expand choices and freedoms. How communities and businesses should operate to improve job quality and expand opportunity for all has been a central concern of our work as Job Quality Fellows. We can progress toward a more inclusive and equitable future through businesses, workers, investors, government, and others working together to create the good jobs that enable workers to thrive, companies to be productive and profitable, and communities to benefit from healthy, sustainable economies.

Americans see virtue in work and believe hard work should offer a pathway to economic security. But decades of lagging wages, eroding benefits, declining employment security, and insufficient attention to addressing barriers to equity and inclusion mean that too many jobs are not a pathway to an economically stable life. This inequality of economic opportunity and decline in job quality is the central issue leading to the erosion of shared opportunity and economic prosperity. To restore the ideal of work as the pathway to the American Dream, our economy needs more quality jobs.

And unicorn rides for all.

MissMarple2

Progress will entail strengthening existing roles as well as shouldering new roles by employers, workers, labor organizations, governments, investors, philanthropy, and the public as consumers and as citizens actively holding their elected representatives accountable.

How do we non-Marxists hold our elected representatives responsible if the Marxists are allowed to vote multiple times, from the grave, have their votes magnified in how they count by defective or effective for actual purpose voting machines?

This Human Development Society agenda actually means that votes that would never be for anyone openly on board with it get cancelled out by the fraud. It;s the appearance of electoral choice without the reality of it.

A mere facade of a republic.

Narciso

would one drone take out the aspen institute, or two?

rse

One more sampling--

We cannot solve inequality, we cannot advance racial justice, and we cannot address the deep divisions in our society without making work work for everyone – which means that now, more than ever, is a moment for investing in quality jobs.

No such thing as economics. That gets overriden by government mandates and soft law like required 'standards' that must be adhered to.

Jane

Thanks Buffy. Hard to believe people are afraid to jump in here. We really like newcomers.
