Good job, Levon. Accounting is one of those things like math that builds upon a knowledge base block by block. I say that knowing full well that you could apply that to any field but accounting was one of those courses that I could see people in the class for whom the light didn't go on and I felt really bad for them knowing it would only get worse; like trying to understand squares and roots without totally grasping multiplication tables and division. Having experience in how businesses operate definitely helps.

Robin, eff 'em all

The book it's based on - "News of the World" - was great, KK. I didn't realize they had made a movie. We have a little theater in the next town that has come up with a way to show films and Hanks's movie is on the list.

All right. Back to loose ends so i can start vaykay tomorrow.

Previous studies have shown that asymptomatic individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 virus were infectious3, and might subsequently become symptomatic4. Compared with symptomatic patients, asymptomatic infected persons generally have low quantity of viral loads and a short duration of viral shedding, which decrease the transmission risk of SARS-CoV-25. In the present study, virus culture was carried out on samples from asymptomatic positive cases, and found no viable SARS-CoV-2 virus. All close contacts of the asymptomatic positive cases tested negative, indicating that the asymptomatic positive cases detected in this study were unlikely to be infectious.

Like other AGs, Barr doesn’t want to stray from convention.

And therein lies the problem.

Buckeye, theConstitution may be Covid toilet paper, but the institution of the Department of Justice has laundered all togas.

Jane, thanks for calling out attention to that video. It was beautiful.

My iPad screen got very blurry at the end of that video for some reason...

My hearing examining irregularities in the 2020 election was important.

Many issues and questions were raised that deserve investigation and answers:

1) @RandPaul and Judge Starr talked about how courts really didn’t evaluate evidence of fraud at all pic.twitter.com/GogMphIFCg

— Senator Ron Johnson (@SenRonJohnson) December 21, 2020

An obvious question is whether Barr's refusal to appoint a SC had something to do with his sudden departure, and whether his successor will take a different view.

If Biden takes office there's no way his DoJ continues the investigation in a serious way.

Damn, Trooper Sue McKay had me crying like a baby.

The contrast is amazing. Obama in 2016 made sure that Trump would be subject to investigations on bogus charges, so as to hobble his presidency and maybe even take him out. Barr hands a gift to a potential Biden administration to let them scuttle a legitimate investigation.

Trump has it in his power to make the SC happen by his choice of Barr's replacement, so we'll see.

James D.

The only difference between AG Sessions and AG Barr is about 150 pounds.

Pretty much. They are both utter failures who have done incalculable damage to the rule of law, and to the country in general, by their refusal to act.

Old Lurker

Jimmy "Trump has it in his power to make the SC happen by his choice of Barr's replacement, so we'll see."

Yes, and Biden will have the authority to fire the SC or defund it effective Jan 21, 2021, about the time he accepts the resignations of every single USA like Clinton did.

Only in Mr. Smith's DC would a Dem politician not do either because of the public perception.

I expect the 4D spin on Barr's decision in 3,2,1....

The only silver lining I can see is that he was willing to step aside and let Trump appoint an acting AG who would do it, so he could keep his toga shiny white.

President-Elect Jim,SunnyvaleCA

1) don't come to SF
2) I read somewhere that it is expected for 1 out of 6 US restaurants to close permanently but in SF the number is 50%.

As I recall, didn't AMom say an 85% in-use rate of ICU beds is normal for flu season? In CA, counties must shut down at 85%. SF voluntarily shut down at 72% due to "models". Only a bit over 14% of ICU beds had Covid patients.

My confidence in CA political leadership is ebbing from an already low point.

OL, could be, though Biden risks impeachment on obstruction of justice charges when the Rs regain the house in 2022 and get 67 Senate seats. (Hey, I can dream, can't I?)

Old Lurker

Wouldn't Mitch's Senate have to confirm? Or go out of session to allow a recess appointment?

just a coincidence,

And don’t forget, Trump has had the deck stacked against him on every issue for 4 years. He always comes back.

Thoughts on separation.
I doubt that's the way it will go, but being open to ideas is worthwhile of course

Don't expect simple truisms. The writer is solidly one of us but the article is written by someone far less sympathetic to us.
"He captures the essence of what the divide is in many ways and misses by a mile in others. The source of the blinders? – 'the following was written by someone who served as an officer in the United States military, worked in Congress and on presidential campaigns, is founder and principal of a private partnership, and holds multiple Ivy League degrees'
The author is a Swamp Thing."

President-Elect Jim,SunnyvaleCA

The first comment to that Separation article is an interesting concept too:

"Gotta hand it to the Poles, they know how to get to the meat of the matter — https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/polish-bill-threatens-22-million-fines-social-media-companies-who-censor-lawful-speech — Squash speech and ya get a hefty fine."

I am going through my pictures to sort them and ran across all of the Christmas pictures from when I used to hold Christmas Eve, back to when my grandkids were babies.

I am a sucker, too. I can only look at a few and then I have to stop for a while.

OL, from that article:
"New highs may still be ahead, but they will need to be driven by rising earnings and not simply expanding multiples."

That's a very obvious statement; PEs are so stratospheric now because the market anticipates a rebound in earnings and has priced it in. The author went back to 1954 for his study, and I think a case can be made that the current economic situation is unique in that time span (maybe a post-WWII situation was similar to what a post-COVID one might be like). In any case, P/E is a rough indicator to hang your hat on in any season, imo. I am getting bearish, though, and I haven't been for years.

Old Lurker

I never tell people when to get in or when to get out of stocks, Jane.

Jane: "No way Biden is still in office in 2022"

There will be strong pressure (and force of events) to get Joe out early.
I mean, he's non compos mentis.
But I'll remind that another plan is to keep him in office for 2 years plus 1 day so that Kamala is eligible for 2 full terms after substituting for the remainder of Joe's term.

Video: "If" by Rudyard Kipling, read by Shane Morris.

...so that Kamala is eligible for 2 full terms after substituting for the remainder of Joe's term.

The electorate likes to prove itself stupid, but I'm guessing that a couple of years of observing Kamala "on the job" will not endear her to voters.

Dear You Know The Thing, I agree with this bint?!? 🤨

Old Lurker

Hrts "(maybe a post-WWII situation was similar to what a post-COVID one might be like)"

Nothing on earth makes those two "events" similar in any way, shape or form, Hrts, so nothing "post" can be similar either.

Not least being that WWII ended with the US ascendant and optimistic. But Covid, since it was phony to begin with, can only have a phony end if it ends at all. And seeing that Covid confirmed the destruction of the Rights previously thought enshrined in the Constitution, there will be no solid basis on which to rebuild a country all over again.

it's an interesting musing, but it's not a regional thing as much a split within cities, which will make it very nasty,

President-Elect Jim,SunnyvaleCA

'box: "PEs are so stratospheric now ... I am getting bearish"

I am still on-deck to sell out my pittance. I promised myself I would get out of the market if Biden won. Still waiting for a definite result to the election ....
I'm lucky that I can make an emo gesture, I have some losses banked that can offset the gains. Also, much of the gain is in my non-taxed IRA.

I posted a while ago about my sister trying to plan how to nurse her nest egg along with investments that are not stocks. That triggered some thoughts for me and my situation. Thanks once again to the people who made suggestions back then.

Mel...his last paragraph about Cantillion:

"It is not just students who are naïve, politicians are often blind to the true consequences of their magic money tree promises. Ironically it is those that aim to help the common man who advocate for disastrous spending policies that hurt us all. Politically this may seem like a monetary sleight of hand, ensuring the flexibility of the labour market and gaining voters, but in practice, inflation is a regressive tax, often under the pretence of egalitarian stability which exacerbates the inequalities it attempts to mitigate."

BuffyUK, So much in the poem. I was flooded with emotion all thru it. Loved this:

A harvest mouse goes scampering by,

With silver claws and a silver eye;

And moveless fish in the water gleam,

By silver reeds in a silver stream.

'Silver claws and a silver eye' ... gorgeous!

Thank you.

I just sent the short story to you thru a gift at amazon. I'd never used the site you mentioned, so thank you. I don't self-publish much. It's fun and gives someone like me goals and excitement, just getting the work done. On one of the YA's I have on amazon (Do Horses Weep?), I had the same woman do a cover. Gave her lots of examples of what I wanted, but the cover ended up looking like a carousel horse. Was so disappointed. I just happened upon the three horses art one day and fell in love with it -- the horses in the story are all being put down by unscrupulous owners for insurance payouts. I came upon this real or true crime in an article in Vanity Fair or some magazine like that -- was so angry and shocked that I had to write about it. My little sleuth solves the crime. :) Anyway, about the cover, I worked up my courage and emailed the artist, asked if I could use the art, how much $, etc., and she let me have the use for the cover, and promotion (bookmarks, etc.) -- but I never promoted it. I can't promote myself. Too shy. The book won a first prize in a writing contest -- that's how I get my 'kicks' cause approaching agents and editors is so, so hard. I've done it. Been told I love your work, but we have teenage mysteries scheduled until 2025 or words to that effect. One editor told me I want to use you, why don't you write something current? Well, at that time, teens were into cutting. :( I am too old to be current. Anyway, I got off on a tangent about artwork and covers, but I do love the one cover. The other I got thru amazon -- you hire them, tell them what you want, and they produce the cover. I asked for changes. You pay for that, but I did. Oh, just remembered, there is one other short story that has a wonderful cover -- a cat with a goldfish gleaming in its eye. Sounds weird or gross, but it is beautiful. :)

Sorry this is so long. Hope the gift went thru.

Hrts, (as I know you know) for stocks a P:E ratio is just as simplistic and just as fallible as "Cap Rates" are in commercial real estate. Both are merely point in time, back of the envelope, estimates of what a mythical investor would pay for an asset right now based on some mythical figure representing the earning ability of the asset over some mythical time period.

Nothing more than that, even at best.

Close down the city for 173 Covid deaths on a population of 805,000 (2010).

Next year we will have a flue epidemic. What then.

Listening to Patriot 125 on Sirius XM as the talk show host played an excerpt of Deb Haaland's acceptance of Biden's nomination to head the Dept. of Interior. I learned a new phrase: "Environmental injustice." So maybe I lead a sheltered life, but that was a new one for me.

So I looked her up, and I have to tell you, the context is a riot.

"As our country faces the impacts of climate change and environmental injustice, the Interior Department has a role to address these challenges. The president-elect's goals, driven by justice and empowering communities who have shouldered the burdens of environmental negligence, we will ensure that the decisions at Interior will once again be driven by science," Haaland said.

You cannot make this shit up.

Well, we went to pick up the groceries (between 4 and 5) and were stuck in the drive-through at my daughter's bank for FORTY-FIVE minutes!

Then we had to go to Kroger and were late, so they made us wait a bit until other people got their order. Then we had to stop by the gas station and now it's dark.

Horrible traffic, I guess with people picking stuff up after work and Christmas shopping and such.

THEN I got fussed at for predicting that gas prices were going to rise next year, because that's "political," when it's just a damn FACT.

Two years ago, the great people of Wisconsin asked me to endorse a man named Brian Hagedorn for State Supreme Court Justice, when he was getting destroyed in the Polls against a tough Democrat Candidate who had no chance of losing. After my endorsement, Hagedorn easily won!...

..WOW, he just voted against me in a Big Court Decision on voter fraud (of which there was much!), despite many pages of dissent from three highly respected Justices. One thing has nothing to do with another, but we ended up losing 4-3 in a really incorrect ruling! Great...

...Republicans in Wisconsin should take these 3 strong decisions to their State Legislators and overturn this ridiculous State Election. We won in a LANDSLIDE!
