Will he or won't he, and when? Trump promised to veto the defense bill but has until Dec 23 to do so. Congress will be home for the holidays but might come back before New Years. Or they might assemble the old Congress and the new one on Jan 3 and let the outgoers override the veto in the morning. Whether elderly retirees will agree to make the trip during a pandemic compounds the suspense.
Trump's rationales include Section 230 modifications to go after Facebook and Twitter and non-renaming of the military bases named for Confederate traitors generals. Some of those names were picked for new WWI bases under Lost Causer Woodrow Wilson. Others were named under FDR. In each case, promoting the US Army to martial Southern white boys was a marketing strategy that is now past the sell-by date. [Full disclosure - On this issue I channel the ghosts of my New England ancestors on this, some of whom died fighting for the Right Side.]
From Politico quoting Trump's tweet:
"I will Veto the Defense Bill, which will make China very unhappy. They love it," Trump tweeted. "Must have Section 230 termination, protect our National Monuments and allow for removal of military from far away, and very unappreciative, lands. Thank you!"
Yes, Miss M, I was surprised to see the photo. My first reaction is that is a photo of an actor playing the part of a soldier. But maybe I have watched too many movies, and all the bad ass soldiers with beards are beginning to look alike. I thought it interesting when he said “stuff,” but then thought that if he’s a soldier and not a politician he may have been at a loss of words (and I don’t mean that in a condescending way). Overall my impression is that the Sec of Def was pleased with our VP for treating him nicely and helping to guide him through the “politics” of Washington. I bet he has always been dismissed as a dummy “soldier” by most of the DC elite/corrupt crowd.

Glen Campbell was a monster music talent. Monster.
Posted by: lyle | December 19, 2020 at 07:38 PM
clarice,
You can think he's BS or not. I have no personal interest.
What DID get my attention was the video today BECAUSE of the video he embedded in his at the 2:50 mark with Miller thanking Pence, talking about how they had been involved in a complex military operation, and thanking Pence for being his mentor.
Pence was my governor and is a prominent evangelical conservative. I was gobsmacked when Trump named him as his running mate and that he accepted. That right there should have made me realize that there is more than meets the eye going on.
I have also paid attention to some of the other cabinet people who have stuck around who don't seem to be people of typical DC politics, like Mnuchin and Navarro. They seem to be pretty loyal, given that they could just resign and live on the millions they had accumulated BEFORE entering government.

Ah, that's a good one, CH, at 7:19.
Love Campbell's music. Warnier, too. Also, like Brad Paisley.
I just cast youtube to the tv and we've been watching and listening to Christmas music. Old fashioned, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Carpenters. Nice music. I just played Alan Jackson's 'Let It Be Christmas' for my husband. He wasn't familiar with it. It's such a sweetly, simple song. Homey, comforting melody. :)
Bye for now. (I woke up at 3 this morning, couldn't sleep. Hope I don't do that again.)

That's what my music buds told me after I'd slept through his trainwreck Rhinestone Cowboy period. I said "really? I thought he mostly a good singer of Webb's songs." They said "sit down, son; you got some serious catching up to do."
In my defense, I did the same thing to them with Richard Thompson.

MissM, I too respect the loyalty of those who you mentioned. Pence and Miller, and their ilk, are true patriots. They could leave and live a comfortable life, but they actually have a conscience, and believe in the Constitution and such. So sad that there are so few. In the end, I am not holding my breath for any Trump miracles.
I read an article the other day, linked from Powerline. It’s not listed there today, and I wished I had linked it. The writer said we should all stay healthy and stay in shape. We should teach our kids at home, and meet up with friends, and make sure we had a network of in-person friends, who can help if needed. It was a bit depressing, bit one the more realistic opinion pieces I have seen. (And keep our old books, because the older books hold the truth)

Re Glen Campbell, I know I've told you guys, but we went to one of his concerts at Royal Albert Hall, had seats at edge of stage -- he saw our little girl (long time ago), blonde, pretty -- and came over, knelt by her, and sang half of the song to her. It was such a moment. :)
She already could sing a few of his songs. He asked her a few questions after the song finished, and he was gobsmacked that he'd chosen an American. He started by asking, 'where are you from?' and she said, "South Care-k-ko-lina, he chuckled, then said, I can't believe it."
Good memory.

Back when I lived in a garden apartment complex in Leonia, NJ, I used to battle the super every year about the heat. It was six buildings with twelve apartments each. All fired by one boiler. The heat was great. I didn't even have to turn the radiators on. The standpipe that ran up to the radiator valve was enough to heat all four rooms until..
The first cold snap. I was at the end of the run, last building, furthest from the boiler. All those people closer to the boiler that left their windows open a little and kept their radiators off would reverse the process. They'd close the windows, turn on some radiators and it would progressively work it's way through all the buildings with tenants adding more and more radiators to the system as the available heat became less and less.
It always boggled my mind that I was talking to a guy required to have either a Blue or Black Seal License to operate the boiler trying to explain that a boiler set to service 0 radiators wasn't the same as one now servicing 72, 144, 216, 266 or some odd combination of radiators added overnight. He just couldn't grasp the concept. "I'll call the repair guys."
Every cold snap.
