promoting the US Army to martial Southern white boys was a marketing strategy that is now past the sell-by date.

Martial isn't a verb

Cap,

It may Gomer Pyle famous:)

Beautiful day here! I think that tough tough winter is over. (Hope). 73 on the lanai which kiwi has been on all day. I leave the door open when I go in to get stuff done so she relaxes. I swear she would live out here in 50 degrees.

(I know, I’m boring)

And bored. Any good sports on TV?

Pinandpuller

One of the reasons the North won is because it imported a huge amount of Germans, many who happened to be Marxists. Which infiltrated the government and academia and laid the groundwork for the importation and infiltration of more European and Asian Marxists and communists which now run the whole damn show.

So I ask you again,”DO YOU FEEL LIKE A WINNER?”

Trump is having a protest in DC on Jan 6th. Wish I could go!

Speaking of Hollies; my 68 Charger had an 1150 Holly double pumper on an Edelbrock with Hooker headers. Was a 383 but felt about equivalent to a stock 440.

Martial isn't a verb

I read "martial" as an adjective in that sentence, though that may not have been what TM meant. Kind of like Dr Jill's "undeserved": It works.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

It's possible he meant Southern lads inclined to martial pursuits but I think he meant marshal.

Any good sports on TV?

Is the Big 10 championship still on? Northwestern vs some other team I can't remember :).

Good afternoon! Yes Jane, it is a beautiful day! I spent time on the lanai reading. See you tomorrow!

Very disappointed in BoJo's UK lockdown.

I'm increasingly seeing the lockdowns as a 20th century version of human sacrifice to appease the gods. Probably equally effective.

I think he meant it exactly that way, Ig, and I’m pretty sure it’s grammatically correct the way he phrased it.

Dave (in MA)

Maybe he meant marital and he was dictating to Doctor Jill.

The Galaxy? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_C-5_Galaxy

On my “boss ride” from the WI ANG refueling wing to Bragg (the back), the WI aircraft parked next to a C 5 on the apron at Pope Field. Plan was to refuel it as a training exercise on the return leg. Our pilot said refueling something that big was tricky... it had a huge bow wave of air he had to compensate for arriving and departing. Sadly, the C 5 got called off on a different mission. Would have been fun to observe the refueling from over the refueling airman’s shoulder. (They let us take pics of the WI ANG F16s they refueled on the way to Bragg).

Jim Eagle

Buffers (Big Ugly Fat Fuckers) was my ride in the AF. 2 years of absolute magic and fun even though most sorties were 13 hours of sitting in a stiff seat. Landing on snow and ice is a heart in mouth experience.

There's an interesting little bit of a grammar post commenting that the English language isn't what it use to be (blamed partly on Journalism schools) at michelles mirror, plus some gorgeous flowers, and farther down a post on Assange and Snowden:

"The English Teacher Steps Out"

• An Oxford comma walks into a bar, where it spends the evening watching the television, getting drunk, and smoking cigars.

• A dangling participle walks into a bar. Enjoying a cocktail and chatting with the bartender, the evening passes pleasantly.

• A bar was walked into by the passive voice

http://www.michellesmirror.com/

Heroes and Villains:

Julian Assange. The left loved him when he was leaking stuff that made Bush look bad, but when he leaked stuff making Hillary look compromised be became a tool of Putin and Trump.

Did we have a right to know that our government was, as we suspected, spying on us? Yes. Snowden’s unwise, naïve, illegal…and dangerous method of revealing this information has made him a goat and a fugitive. Even so, knowing what I know now about the corruption enmeshed at every level of government, would I forgive him? Yeah, I just might.

BuffyUK: I thought of you as I was reading this short interview. I read all of Jilly Cooper's books when I was in the UK. They're light reading, silly, but fun. I especially liked her books set in the horse world. Rupert Campbell-Black was a bit of a scoundrel -- enjoyed those Rutshire Chronicles series. (As I said, light but sometimes it's nice not to read about serial killers.)

I like Mick Herron's books (well, some of them). Really liked Down Cemetery Road.

Also like Stephen Booth, Peter Robinson, Mark Billingham, Mo Hayder, Kate Atkinson (Jackson Brodie), Minette Walters, Nicci French. Val Dermid. Lynda LaPlante. So many more. :)

https://townhall.com/tipsheet/bronsonstocking/2020/12/19/drug-overdoses-skyrocket-amid-coronavirus-lockdowns-n2581848

After declining in the previous year, drug overdose deaths in the United States rose 18 percent in the 12-month period beginning Jun. 2019 and ending May 2020. According to the CDC, drug overdose deaths were already on the rise in 2019 but accelerated during the early months of the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic.

A new CDC report reveals that approximately 81,230 people fatally overdosed in the United States during the 12-month period. It's the largest number of drug overdoses for a one-year period ever recorded.

Re the overdose deaths, we also need a nationwide tally of increased youth suicides. At the end is the comment by Chris Miller, who talks about the US being involved in the most complex military operation ever and thanks Pence for being his mentor.

My guess, without having watched the video(which I will), is that Trump’s constantly stating that he is a “wartime president” because of the massive undertaking of using the US Forces to martial against the “invisible enemy,” Miller is referring to that and thanking Pence for being the chosen leader on the battlefield.

Tamales and eggs indeed, Joan. Absolutely delicious!

Jack and I don’t talk wine anymore, Joan. He only drinks French whereas I have a taste for wines of many countries and appellations within. If memory serves, the last bottle I was talking about here was Antinori Tignanello. The wife said she saw some ‘16 at Costco today.

I suggest watching (reading) the entire thing. What this proves to me is that I am right about not knowing what is going on behind the scenes AT ALL.

Probably not quite as good as literature as High Fidelity but the music focus is squarely on classic rock.

I didn’t ever go to wax stacks but I was a regular at the CD exchange up in Coventry.

Miss Marple: On Solar Winds -- we watched Lou Dobbs for the first time in over six months or so yesterday evening, and he was pissed off. I liked Never My Love by the Association.

Also really liked 10cc's I'm Not in Love. In fact, I loved it. :)

We watched a good documentary on HBO about the BeeGee's last week. I really enjoyed it. There was a lot of information about how they fell out of favor because of some real asshoe who started a "I Hate Disco" movement. Fans brought records to some baseball field and they set rockets off on the records or something strange. I'd never heard of this happening (I always kinda liked the energy of disco) because we lived in London then. Don't remember it being covered. But it shocked and hurt the BeeGee's career. After that they went to writing songs for other people. I didn't realize or had forgotten they wrote Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton's Islands In The Stream and several other songs by top singers like Barbara Streisand.

The way that disc jockey went after the BeeGee's reminded me of today -- the way woke people find some little thing that can be twisted and called racist or misogynist or something and destroy people. Really sick.

Made me sad and happy to watch the documentary. Barry looked so old, sad, and alone at the end -- but then they showed him singing at some revival or concert and he was right at home and happy.

MissMarple2

Our son goes to Argentina a lot with his wife, and he's fallen in love with Malbec. It's good, but I wanted something pricy. Cause he's such a snob and thinks people here drink Old Wild Rose or something. :(

I use to love asti spumante. I can remember the first time I had a glass -- it was sort of like have a bit of liquid, sparkling plum in my mouth.

We use to be given so much booze and wine when my husband worked in Europe. The Italians, especially, gave us those kind of presents. One time my husband gave a talk in Wales for the Financial Times and the newspaper sent us a case of the loveliest wine. :) I went on that trip -- we took the train up there. My husband didn't like taking me on business trips for some reason. :( One time he had been to Germany and was going to end up in Paris. I flew there to meet him by myself and went to the hotel. I was so hungry so I ordered a sandwich and a Coke from room service at the hotel, and the waiter or whatever you call the guy who brings the meal to your room almost spit as he poured the Coke. :) I'm sure he thought "you heathen American."

Always liked Walk Away Renee.
