"Flames broke out in the building and 3 feet of water pooled in the basement. Temporary battery power kept services intact in the hours following the explosion, but fire and flooding damaged backup power generators to power those batteries."

For Christmas Jr. got me a book that I think you would find interesting.
“David Kimble’s Cutaways” Published 2015.
If the name doesn’t ring a bell, you have seen his work in Road & Track and other car mags.
Coffee table quality printing of his work spanning about 5 decades. Awesome. Some of your favorite Ferraris, Corvettes, Harley Davidson, Engines, even the Starship Enterprise.

“the fires set off the sprinklers”
Hopefully the sprinklers were in office space only and not equipment rooms.
Hopefully the backup generators weren’t in the basement. (Bad placement of the backup generators was a substantial contributor to Fukushima. Infrastructure people need to start thinking about that sort of thing.)

I don't think the full tick-tock will come out on what happened to AT&T for reasons of security, but this sounds likely.
Anyone with a lick of sense regularly exercises a generator set so that they find problems before they need the generator output in a real emergency. So something about the explosion took them off-line, probably took out the main power at the same time and the back-up batteries lasted as long as they were supposed to do. Which, in this case, wasn't long enough.
Without the generators coming on line they probably weren't able to re-route much of anything proactively.

1 killed, 3 injured in alleged Israeli airstrike near Syria-Lebanon border
The strike targeted Al Zabadani, located northwest of Damascus and just east of the border with Lebanon, according to Syrian media.
Posted by: jim nj | December 30, 2020 at 12:53 AM
Context
By late July 2012, Zabadani had become a base of operations for Hezbollah and the Iranian Guards.[5] In August, local fighters retook 70% of Zabadani with only a few isolated army checkpoints remaining.[6] On 28 February 2014, a truce was reached between government and the rebels.[7] Later it was reported that the truce broke down and that rebels attacked government checkpoints, with the government besieging and shelling the town.[8] On 26 April 2014, the rebels surrendered after intense fighting with government troops, losing their last stronghold along Lebanon's border,[9] only to regain control of the city months later.[citation needed] Following an extended siege by the Syrian Army and Hezbollah, a U.N.-brokered agreement was finally signed in September 2015, under which the city was successively evacuated by the rebels and control ceded back to the Syrian government

Why Joe Biden Is Headed for Failure
“We’re back in the game,” says Joe Biden, a president who cannot take his dog for a walk without falling over it and twisting his ankle. He will lose his footing in the first foreign-policy crisis that comes along.
Posted by: jim nj | December 30, 2020 at 01:40 AM
You know I don't understand the Biden camp's rush to reassert the Iran agreement.
And I don't understand why Iran would agree to it either.
The US doesn't have over a hundred billion dollars of sequestered Iranian money to give back to the Iranians anymore.
What, we'll agree to let Iran sell as much oil as it wants when there is a glut of it on the market? Europeans are going to rush into investments in Iran when the policy may be shortly reversed again?
A realist would take advantage of the new situation and bargain accordingly.

(Gotta love intersectionality when practiced by ignorant-of-history morons. We'll raise your "sentiments" with gruesome barbarism.)
You know it was widely suspected that Shakespeare was Catholic, but they never were able to prove it and he managed to die of natural causes as an old man. Pretty impressive because the hate-ridden sentiments of his time included killing Catholics by hanging them until they were merely stunned, and then disemboweling them while still alive, feeding their still-attached intestines into an open fire before their eyes.Posted by: cathyf | December 30, 2020 at 02:29 AM
https://warontherocks.com/2020/12/the-marines-and-americas-special-operators-more-collaboration-required/
Interesting. Contrasts the Marines shift to fleet warfare with the Special Forces need to adjust to fighting a near-peer rather than small groups of Islamists.
It kind of suggests that in the future special operators might have to coordinate with Marine attacks in a war with China.
In WWII the Marines assaulted islands. Once they were secured the Army relieved them so the marines could assault a new island.
In a new paradigm maybe special forces could infiltrate islands before a Marine assault. Come in just before the assault, lie in wait and disrupt any defense against the assault.

If I were still hanging quotes on my kids' bathroom mirrors, this would be there, in regard to the "no evidence of fraud presented" "almost every case thrown out" "Move on" election :
“Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”

Buffy,
I was the Connie Willis fan. Her time travel to the plague is also quite good. My favorite is a novella she wrote called "Bellwether," which is so funny that I was laughing out loud in the grocery store. It's about a social scientist who studies fads, and might require a reread right about now. There's a scene where she and a coworker are trying to herd sheep onto a truck, and well, if you've ever tried to get sheep to do anything you want...

Iggy yesterday: "Never, if the Ledge is a defensive redoubt to escape what's coming.
If you put it on wheels and make it an offensive battle wagon, I'll be glad to hop aboard."
How soon they forget.
You have forgotten that back when the Ledge was designed (Atop a twelve story building in Arlington I might have owned at the time), DoT helped us acquire retired 12" guns from WWII battleships so that we could fire 2,000 lb projectiles at any building inside the DC Beltway. We planned to store the makings in the sub-sub basement (I stored the booze in the sub-basement), and we hoped that Iggy would take charge of the gun crews.
Hence the old timers here who have always assumed the Ledge was an offensive redoubt.

I could certainly be mistaken but my memory is the initial design was as a refuge from the imminent herds of roving barbarians from which one would be able to pull up the draw bridge and as a last resort take the fateful plunge of suicidal freedom should the orc hordes begin scaling its walls like so many ants.
Later it was decided to make it more offensive minded with the installation of gun turrets.
Regardless, it's only a metaphor. But my objection is to its form of metaphor. There is no solution, nor even ultimate safety, in a falcon's eyrie. It's down on the ground where TK and Maryrose mix it up and Buford and Texas Liberty Gal or whoever's husband was elected. Retreating to a ledge, which we're all guilty of to one degree or another, for the last hundred years has left the playing field open to the orcs to rampage at will.
To take the country back will involve walking back out onto what is now their field and killing, either politically or, God forbid actually, our former countrymen who have turned to orcs. That's the ugly reality we all have allowed to come into being.

Our laundry room is off the kitchen, and therefore close to the family room where my “easy” chair and I reside.
Mrs. Buckeye started a load and then went to the loft for a Zoom call with her girlfriends.
As usual the washer did some banging around, and since it is relatively new, it will cleverly display a fault code if something goes awry.
I didn’t get up to check and after the Zoom call, Mrs. Buckeye came down and ask if the washer load finished.
I said I didn’t know but that I did hear some banging.
She ask, “Did it give you an FU code”
Think I’m rubbing off on her:)

--You know I don't understand the Biden camp's rush to reassert the Iran agreement.
And I don't understand why Iran would agree to it either.--
Iran wants it to remove the sanctions.
But the overarching reason they both want it is;
Iran deal = bad for America and Israel.
Progs = enemies of America and Israel.
Iran = enemy of America and Israel.
It is who they are.

“To take the country back will involve walking back out onto what is now their field and killing, either politically or, God forbid actually, our former countrymen who have turned to orcs. That's the ugly reality we all have allowed to come into being.”
Indeed. We ALL allowed it to happen, and that was our mistake.
I’ve just been of the opinion that the “political” remedy had already passed.
And that the hope of the other option dwindles, and becomes increasingly impossible, unlikely or even bloodier as demographics change and us Old Timers who remember what America was like even just 20 years ago trundle into nursing homes or die off.

Fd--
This is the agenda and yes I am quoting from a unesco document from last year on the 2030 Agenda the oECD is also a part of and trump has tried to take us out of.
[The SDGs] They are summation of the collective aspirations for a future worthy of our planet.Since the adoption of the SDGs, governments, businesses and wider civil society organisations the world over have taken up the arduous challenge of mobilising societies to act to realise a peaceful and sustainable future. This urgency for action has also been induced by the fact that some of the challenges that the SDGs set out to address are materialising by the day, especially the looming climate catastrophe. As much as the SDGs have inspired individual and collective action, they are yet to internalise a mindset that is peaceful and sustainable among individuals. Something is needed to internalise and make automatic the mindset to co-exist (with the planet) peacefully and sustainably. This is where kindness could play a significant role in creating and internalising such a mindset. Imagine a world where it is intuitive and easy to be kind to each other, to all beings and the planet; where individual and collective action is informed by this simple and natural secular ethic.
The bolding is from me and the part that led me to this Agenda.

More (in case anyone thinks I am exaggerating):
To realise a world that is peaceful and sustainable, there is need to replace violent and unsustainable systems, which requires a massive behavioural change on an individual and then on the collective level. As established above, research from the cognitive neurosciences indicates that behavioural change stems from functional and structural biological changes in the brain that occur as a consequence of neuroplasticity. Given the massive benefits of kindness and prosocial behaviour, it is time we consciously promote and augment this naturally occurring prosocial circuit in human beings such that it is automatically activated. A spiral of numerous acts of kindness strengthens the circuit, and in return, the circuit induces individuals to perform more acts of kindness. As described earlier, adolescents and the youth are uniquely positioned because of the brain development that they undergo at that age. The explicit promotion of prosocial behaviour can arm them to tackle dissonance that exists because of beliefs, attitudes values and feelings about oneself, others or the environment. Not to forget, humans have a fundamental need to belong to something larger than themselves (Baumeister & Leary, 1995). One’s social responsibility is rooted in relationships with others—individuals must feel connected to others and see oneself as part of a larger entity. When supported by others, growing autonomy during adolescence can also foster social responsibility, as autonomy entails having the agency to act on one’s values—values that involve helping others and contributing to society (Wray-Lake & Syvertsen, 2011). The ability of adolescents to identify and define social responsibility, in turn, is important in defining who they are, where they fit in the social world and building confidence in their sense of agency (Youniss & Yates, 1997). A confident, self-aware and values-conscious youth can lead the world towards peace and sustainability, and kindness presents itself as the ideal trait to drive this movement.

rse,
Scary stuff. But it IS all part of their plan and Agenda.
And the video that Melinda linked to at 8:44 AM should be a wake-up for everyone.
This, besides the profits that Big Pharma stand to gain, may be behind their impetus to get us all vaccinated instead of “building back better” our own immune systems.
What if they have found the genetic or brain keys that determine other “undesirable” factors that stand in their way of world domination ... like patriotism and the desire to be free of authoritarian governments?

Okay, I’ve clearly gone over the edge. I decided I had, must, will listen to one day more, (les Miserables) today. I don’t have a CD Player and couldn’t find the disc, so I went to Walmart.
Found a player but no disc. Back ito the shed - found SBW’s discs which I can finally listen to and holy cow - there they were!
ONE DAY MORE will be playing here all day on the lanai - while the water is off and the temp is beautiful! Stop on by!

anonamom: Your 5:08 was fun! I'm so glad you posted it. After I watched Sinatra, Rickles, and Carson, I clicked on Dennis Miller talking about Sinatra. Both my husband and I laughed out loud. What a great start to the day (albeit, a little late -- we got up at 6 a.m., but I didn't find your video until a few minutes ago.)
Thank you for all that you bring to jom -- your knowledge and tips give me a feeling of confidence in facing the 'emotional' part of these past months of media stoking the fear and 'horror' of covid.

I believe the idea of neural plasticity is just another retarded utopian prog myth.
Were it so we would see a large change in human nature from the Old Testament or Greek or other ancient literature from today. Instead we see the exact same behavior and motivations as now.
Second, the USSR, Mao and a hundred other attempts would have already molded the New Man. Instead we see the same old man everywhere we look.
Human history is largely a chronicle of ambitious men beating themselves senseless on the immutable stone wall of human nature.
People can be taught, and learn, all manner of stupid things, but they are always post-it notes stuck on the unchanging laws of, not just human nature, but also the real natural world and its own immutable laws.
And that is why every stupid utopian project eventually always loses its stickiness and ends up with the dust bunnies under the fridge with all the rest of the previous post-it notes reminding us to pick up the eggs and a carton of milk on our way to nirvana.
There is nothing new under the sun and consequently, vanity, vanity, all is vanity.

This ties in with my last comment;
As Daniel Greenfield pointed out yesterday, it never becomes impossible for the governed to withdraw their consent.
70 years after Lenin and Stalin had attempted to completely extinguish the memory of the unpleasant, authoritarian Czarist system and replaced it with the all encompassing evil of their totalitarian state, the subjects of Eastern Europe and the USSR shrugged their shoulders and threw off the totalitarians and replaced them with either freedom or their old authoritarian ways.
People aren't very rational, are often influenced by temporary situations and events and will often tolerate appalling mistreatment...for a time. But they always revert to the mean because of the laws of nature. Men know in their hearts that freedom is better than oppression. They know the difference between pain and pleasure and liberty and subjection. But regardless of what man knows in his heart, the real world with its unchanging risks and rewards always stands ready to crush the utopians and the power mongers and the oligarchs from achieving their unworkable plans.
It takes longer than we want oftentimes but it always does.

I've always been a fan of Haynes Workshop Manuals. My greasy well worn Jaguar E Type one got me through dismantling and reassembling my 63.
But I didn't know they had branched out a bit;
