What a lying weasel.
N.Y. Severely Undercounted Virus Deaths in Nursing Homes, Report Says
The state attorney general, Letitia James, said it’s likely that the Cuomo administration failed to report thousands of Covid-19 deaths of nursing home residents.
To be clear - the deaths were reported, but if someone who fell ill in a nursing home died at a hospital (or in an ambulance on the way there) it was recorded as a hospital death.

Cuomo as lying weasel? How dare TM violate PETA’s prohibition on animal metaphors. In a rare agreement with PETA, a weasel is much smarter than Cuomo. Try lying cane toad.*
* The male cane toads are like kakapos –they’ll hump anything, and I mean, anything. They’re well known for humping dead animals, even trying for hours to hump a female that has been run over by a car, but they don’t limit themselves to just dead frogs, they’ll even hump dead salamanders, snakes, lizards, mice, anything.

On topic, still puzzled as to why this story about Cuomo's perfidy is just getting play now. Back in August I pointed out here that it was already old news then. (Ext had linked a story from the AP, of all places, noting the undercount of nursing home deaths.) I'd seen something about it in June, I think, and posted it here (can't find that post now, though).
One explanation is that now Trump is gone, so the battle is between the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks.

Posted by: Narciso | January 30, 2021 at 12:38 AM
Mel,
I was tempted to write about that last night. One too many beers said no.
Much of what I am reading is over simplified. While a large army of small investors could have enough clout to move the market in any one stock with a relatively small float I suspect that some larger players were on their side.
There are reasons to short stocks beyond the simple explanation that you expect it to tank.
For instance, when an options market-maker sells an option on a stock it doesn't usually come from inventory. They create it out of thin air and then to hedge their new exposure they enter into a counter position that could include selling a stock short.

I saw an interview with Webull CEO Anthony Denier (that I can't find now) where he said his clearing firm dictated what he could trade.
Something about the clearing firm not having enough money to pay for the trades.
Huh? Clearing firms don't normally pay for the trades. The investor does.
That went right past the reporter. Now if the clearing firm said they won't accept trades if your client doesn't have sufficient funds on deposit with you right now that might make sense.

Posted by: jim nj | January 30, 2021 at 01:14 AM
Clearing firms are on the hook for the whole trade if the customer’s firm fails to cover.
That’s what clearing firms do, match the trades and cash to clear them to the proper accounts.
Posted by: Melinda | January 30, 2021 at 01:15 AM
https://issuesinsights.com/2021/01/29/bidens-worst-executive-order-went-almost-entirely-unnoticed/
"Biden’s order – which didn’t get released to the press until late in the evening of his first day – aims to effectively toss the cost-benefit analysis that for many decades has served as at least a modest brake on the ambitions of regulators. In the past, regulations where the cost of compliance far exceeded the benefits could be stymied by the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. "
Easy way to accommodate CRT.
Posted by: jim nj | January 30, 2021 at 01:21 AM
Yes, that's why I said that the clearing firms don't normally pay for the trades.
For anybody trying to follow this a broker may not be full-service. Even Schroder, the firm I worked for, didn't clear its trades. It had a partial ownership of LEWCO Securities, which was a clearing firm, but which didn't do any business of its own.
A broker or hedge fund that doesn't do its own clearing of trades is like a web app that doesn't own its servers. Somebody else does all the nuts and bolts stuff while you present a nice interface.
If a broker at a non-clearing firm wants to see a client's positions and cash on hand he is actually looking at information stored at the clearing firm's servers.
An investment firm that itself clears, or owns part of a clearing firm, will have a "prime brokerage" unit that solicits and manages the client accounts of firms that can't afford to set up their own clearing firm.

OK jim, explain how these stocks can be shorted in excess of 100%.
Is it like subletting a Manhattan apartment or what?
Posted by: Pinandpuller | January 30, 2021 at 01:59 AM
On this part I may be incorrect, but my understanding of the way that clearing firms work is that they sum out all the exposures of the firms they work with and present each with a debit or credit.
Now I may be wrong and the clearing firms deal with individual accounts initially and then look to the firms for discrepancies. And that might be a part of the clearing agreement, we will front money, at interest, while you clear up any problems, at our discretion.
So I'm trying to sort out the reporting and the trading bans and it doesn't sound right.
I think the message from the clearing firms was that you don't have enough capital to cover your client's account's imbalances and we won't front you the money.
Posted by: jim nj | January 30, 2021 at 02:02 AM
Pin,
That's an interesting question that I don't have a good answer for.
"Naked" short-selling, where you don't own, or haven't borrowed the shares, is illegal.
That spawned the quote, "He who sells what isn't his'n, buys it back, or goes to pris'n."
Posted by: jim nj | January 30, 2021 at 02:08 AM
Perhaps I'm being foolishly optimistic, but I wonder if (or at least hope that) by signing that executive order, Biden may in the end find he's shot himself in the foot.
A number of Supreme Court justices have supported eliminating, or at least drastically curtailing, what's called Chevron deference. That's a judicial rule that instead of courts deciding what's the best interpretation of an ambiguous regulatory statute for themselves, they defer to any reasonable interpretation by the relevant executive agency. The justification for Chevron deference is that the agencies have technical expertise that the courts lack.
An executive order that directs the agencies to regulate based on transparently political considerations highlights the shakiness of that justification, and could result in the end of Chevron deference, which would significantly reduce the power of agencies. At least we can hope.

Firms that don't own their own clearing operations used to be called "introducing firms."
It's a quaint term, but it fits, we can provide all the advice you will need, but we need this other guy to get it all done, don't worry, he's a friend of ours.
Suddenly, said friend says, "I don't need any more introductions. I had to break the legs of the latest people you sent me. You're next if you send me anymore like that."
Posted by: jim nj | January 30, 2021 at 02:19 AM
MJW,
That was my thought. A cost-benefit analysis can be argued about as to whether it accurately captures the true facts, but it presumes to deal in facts in the first place.
To argue that some regulation is needed because of some nebulous theory would seem to be a stretch.
"But your Honor, if we don't do this the polar ice caps will melt." "Are you prepared to enter evidence in that regard?" "Huh?"
