Joe Biden's First Day agenda includes a proposal for comprehensive immigration reform. Just as Dems divide over the Green New Deal and Medicare For All but unite in loathing Trump, the fractured Republican Party will come together to derail the latest run at immigration reform.
In a nightmare scenario the moderate Dems in the Senate (Sinema, Manchin) are so committed to giving Biden this win that they vote to change the Senate rules and eliminate the filibuster. More likely, immigration again goes nowhere.
Biden's website on immigration is here; he links to a 2013 CBO study assessing that attempt at reform. Their summary: more workers leads to a larger economy, but smaller on a Per Capita basis; until skills and jobs alignn, unemployment rises (a bit) and wages fall (a bit). The return on capital rises, however, since it is slightly scarcer relative to labor.
So for Chamber of Commerce Republicans its all winning - more customers, cheaper workers, higher return on capital.
For Democrats, more unskilled workers plus the Biden Fantasy Minimum Wage of $15 should boost unemployment but (more importantly!) boost the need for the sort of compassionate safety net Democrats live to provide. More winning!
And yes, I'm already getting sick of all the winning.
From CBO on the 2013 immigration bill:
Gee, I wonder who voted for Biden and all his crap?

Are there enough non Chamber R Senators to even want to stop this via filibuster?
You can add the gang of 8 types (Rubio, Graham) to the #nevertrump core, plus jerks like Sasshole. They will roll over so fast Schumer won’t have to end the filibuster.

I have no reason to doubt that Democrats will follow thru on their threat to kill the filibuster. TM appears to be oblivious of the fact that once that happens thanks to people like him the GOP will no longer have a chance to derail anything the Democrats want.

Possibly but I have previously expressed my doubts in this area.
I think he is less demented and more tenacious than he is generally given credit for.
I think he is a tough, crooked, corrupt, quite maggoty survivor and if someone wants to knock him off they better not miss. He is without a doubt a moron, but he is sly and cunning and has sharp elbows. I'm not sure Harris oughtn't to watch her back more than him, because she seems to be few of the things Biden is, besides corrupt and nasty.

Agree with you. These republicans that were just re-elected have nothing to lose because they are good for the next 6 years.
I am going to make a long term prediction.
I no longer believe that we will have a president who serves more than one term.
Each party will concentrate on ousting the opposing party from power.
Impeachment will occur for each one and will not pass the Senate.
I still say 2 terms max for senators and bring the number to 4 years instead of 6 just to keep them honest.
For House members 3 terms max of 2 years each.
New election rules for states which only the legislature can control.
Big restraints on governors.
If you look at which people ultimately did President Trump wrong- it was mostly women Secretaries of State in Michigan, Pennsylvania and goofy governors in Georgia and Arizona. SOS in Georgia and Nevada - downright paid off crooks.
Wisconsin- again a good ball Governor.
Finally local and state races have to be paid attention to and dealt with ahead of the election.

I’d be okay if we reversed the 17th Amendment and went back to State legislatures appointing Senators.
This fundamentally changed the relationship between the States and the Federal government, and just created another party and campaign finance mechanism through which real power was taken from the people despite its apparent intent.

2020 was an election that showed the full extent of the perfidy the Dems are capable of and it will not be forgotten.
My question remains:
Will the votes of illegals, dead people, votes that exceeded 100 percent, votes from people who no longer live there(Nevada) be stricken from the final count?
What about 200,000 extra unaccounted for votes in Pennsylvania and the remaining lawsuits.
When do we get the final tallies from the states?
Or are fraudulent votes just included unlawfully in the count?

the Ho’s unwillingness to resign her Senate seat.
I understand why politicians would hate the idea, but if we ever did have CH's Article V convention, one amendment I'd like to see is that if you hold any federal office (elected, appointed or simply an employee), you must resign that office, effective immediately, the moment you submit paperwork or begin fundraising to run for a different office.
Running for office is a full-time job; how can anyone possibly be expected to do their current job competently if they're spending all their time campaigning and fundraising?
And since that would give incumbents a huge advantage, that amendment would have to be paired with term limits - 2 terms for the Senate, 6 for the House, and no more than 18 years in ANY federal elected or appointed office.

BuffyUK, I subscribed to the Times and really enjoyed the Sunday Times (way back when) -- it was left of me, but they had so many interesting articles. We also subscribed to the International Herald Tribune (I guess it's changed, now owned by NYT, though it was never conservative.) I guess I also subscribed to the Evening Standard (that was my go-to paper). There was another one we got regularly. As my son got older, I would find The Sun hidden in his room. :) The breasts were eye-popping. Think it was The Sun.
We had a cleaning lady who came twice a week, Spanish, devout Catholic, and I told him it would horrify Carmen to see those newspapers, so he agreed to be careful and/or leave them at his friends. Think they shared them. :) This was about 8th grade or so for him. He went all the way through school at ASL while we were there. Big shock bringing him home during senior year, though he went back to graduate.

He allowed the credit card companies to charge exorbitant rates until they were finally reined in, which hurt the middle class most of all. he has a history of being dead wrong on the issues and as his former boss said of him:
"Don't underestimate Joe's ability to F things up"
A hell of a job reference there.
He has insulted his political opponents all of his life as well as ordinary citizens. he is not a nice person despite the mask.

By the way, Crenshaw may be out of fandom with others but I have faith in his political and social tendencies. Sometimes you have to get along in order to point along. Give him some flex.
Nope, he's on his own from now on.
You call out DJT along with the Ds -- you are history.
That is not "getting along". That is being against America.

Joan,
And unlike here there were dozens of British papers to choose from.
4 broadsheets if you include the FT which I do. And then all the scandal sheets, Daily Mail and Evening Standard the exceptions. On Sky News, even over here, they do that analysis of all the papers with a co ouple of talking heads. Fun to here the reactions.
They take their news, even the trivial, very seriously.

henry, Mara Liasson reported the same this morning on NPR--orgasmically. She was beyond thrilled that "experts in governance would be governing again."
You know, instead the know-nothing and his crew who got shit done.
Odd how I didn't notice two of the four crisis were even a "thing". (Climate change, which we call weather at my house, and race. Which I had been assured did NOT exist in med school.)
And I do believe the economic downturn is directly related to misguide policies dealing with the first (Covid) which I would not classify as a crisis. It's a seasonal virus that is in a pandemic stage.

Buffy, it was a dumb reference to this stupid phenomenon from 3 years ago.

Crenshaw always ran to the media when he had a disagreement with DJT, whether it was troop drawdowns or voting fraud, instead of discussing it in private. I've seen enough.

Just heard that the Ho is resigning tomorrow. FWIW.
China: from one of the vids, their production is shut down in many areas. No chips coming out of Taiwan so you can’t make cars, etc. so the implication is once Plugs is in, they’ll have free reign on taking over the island. And the current clown running S. Korea is so far over his skis leaning into Xi that they might be next.
Some of this is like the roar of the wind before the hurricane makes landfall. Do we board up and hunker in, or try heading to a safe place and get caught in some other sorry mess.

Henry, I was thinking more in terms of red/blue spaces inside our border.
BTW just tried to call my bud who was planning to escape to the Czech Republic. No answer so I don’t know if he’s already left.

So when the Great Octopus finally arrives, she's out of a job altogether.Posted by: Dave (in MA) | January 17, 2021 at 03:45 PM
That armed "protest" at state capitols scheduled for today? It was an invitation only "protest" for the Boogaloo SoiBoys.

--the Ho’s unwillingness to resign her Senate seat.
That is a puzzler--
She did resign it and Newsom appointed Alex Padilla our SOS to take her place.

--If Biden isn't suffering from dementia then what is the correct medical term to describe someone suffering from some form of cognitive impairment that creates the perception he does not know where he is, what day of the week it is, and says "end of quote" when reading the last words on the teleprompter?--
The correct term for that is cherry picking. If all these people look at is the part where he sounds like an imbecile and ignore where he doesn't you get an inaccurate picture.

Has RG ben able to sign in yet? I want to ask him about the B.S. he's been peddling for the last couple of years. Deliberate disinfo or what?
