Hiding from the rioters in a secret location away from the Capitol, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) appealed to Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser. Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) phoned Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter.
And Kellyanne Conway, a longtime Trump confidante and former White House senior adviser, called an aide who she knew was standing at the president’s side.
But as senators and House members trapped inside the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday begged for immediate help during the siege, they struggled to get through to the president, who — safely ensconced in the West Wing — was too busy watching fiery TV images of the crisis unfolding around them to act or even bother to hear their pleas.
“He was hard to reach, and you know why? Because it was live TV,” said one close Trump adviser. “If it’s TiVo, he just hits pause and takes the calls. If it’s live TV, he watches it, and he was just watching it all unfold.”
Leadership that's shirking.

Woke up to Nancy pontificating about the impeachment and reminding us that her father was the first Italian-American in Congress and then going on to talk about November 22, 1963.
At that, given the Italy connections we discussed a day or two ago and her reference to the Kennedy assassination, I got totally creeped out and turned it off.

The sad things about dupes is they seem to like being duped.
The press has been quoting "one close Trump adviser" after another for five years and they invariably either don't exist or it turns out were simply making shit up.
And yet formerly sensible people think listening to or reading these same people for honest reporting makes sense and that they are reliable. Amazing.

--Some Men Just Want To Watch The World Burn--
What a preposterous headline.
Trump deescalated war after war brought by his predecessors, concluded peace deals between Israel and several ME states, presided over a declining crime rate, responded strongly [even the few honest Dems had to admit this] to wildfires and various natural disasters and went out of his way to encourage the governors and other imbeciles who were letting looters and rioters burn down their cities respond to stop the destruction and offered all the help he could to prevent it.
When city centers were actually on fire it was "mostly peaceful". Now when a few goofballs tromp around the capitol with their funny hats on it's "fiery TV coverage" even though I'm pretty sure there weren't any fires.
And of course there is not a single shred of evidence the thrust of the story is true whatsoever.

Another program coming up.
We are all living in challenging times that our past experience and training has not sufficiently prepared us for. Too often, well intentioned equity efforts do not succeed—and even produce unintended consequences. This can lead to frustration, hopelessness and cynicism. This workshop offers an introduction to our Liberatory Design approach.
Liberatory Design is an approach to addressing equity challenges and change efforts in complex systems. It is a process and practice to:
Create designs that help interrupt inequity and increase opportunity for those most impacted by oppression
Transform power by shifting the relationships between those who hold power to design and those impacted by these designs
Generate critical learning and increased agency for those involved in the design work
At the core of Liberatory Design are a set of beliefs: racism and inequity have been designed into systems and thus can be designed out of systems; designing for equity requires the meaningful participation of those impacted by inequity; and equity-driven designs require equity and complexity informed processes.
The Liberatory Design approach and card deck was originally created as part of a collaboration between the National Equity Project (Victor Cary and Tom Malarkey) and the Stanford d.school's K12 Lab (Tania Anaissie, David Clifford, and Susie Wise) in 2016. Our approach to Liberatory Design is grounded in our Leading for Equity Framework and integrates human-centered design (aka design thinking) with complex systems theory and deep equity practice.

Orwellian redefinitions.
Misinformation is a big part of our current polarization because it is hard to bring the country together when each side has its own facts and attributions of responsibility. It helps that some leading social media platforms have limited or banned Trump’s posting privileges. But that will not stop the spread of misinformation as Trump likely will move to other sites that have few limits on what he can post. His followers will share falsehoods on their own sites, and misinformation will continue to divide Americans and poison our political environment.

https://www.brookings.edu/events/truth-and-accountability-post-insurrection-where-does-the-country-go-from-here/ on January 19.
On January 6, following a rally where President Trump urged his supporters to “fight much harder” against “bad people” and “show strength,” a mob of rioters aiming to halt the count of Electoral College ballots that would formally seal Joe Biden’s victory violently stormed and overtook the United States Capitol. One Capitol police officer and four pro-Trump extremists lost their lives as a result.
Now, in the aftermath of the insurrection, lawmakers are exploring ways to strip the president of his authority, hold those who participated accountable, and investigate the massive security failures that jeopardized the lives of elected officials and legislative staff. House Democrats introduced an article of impeachment against President Trump in absence of Vice President Mike Pence invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from power. Some lawmakers are also urging the expulsion of Republican lawmakers who participated in the efforts to overturn the election via the 14th Amendment.
On January 19, Governance Studies at Brookings will host a webinar to discuss the aftermath of the January 6 insurrection. Panelists will assess the options lawmakers are exploring to remove President Trump from office, how the insurrection affects American democracy, and what it all means for President-elect Biden’s first 100 days in office.

--Misinformation is a big part of our current polarization because it is hard to bring the country together when each side has its own facts and attributions of responsibility.--
Orwell would be impressed.
It sounds like a reasonable, conciliatory gesture to find common ground.
What it turns out to be is each side has its own facts and one is true and the other false and the false one must be silenced and destroyed and prosecuted.
I'm sorry but I can't help laughing at the arrogance of the stupidest among us going down the same road that has been travelled a million times before with the same result and yet these geniuses think this time it will be different.
Even someone like TM and Appalled traipse down the same road albeit hanging back a bit.
Where do these geniuses think this criminalization of counter viewpoints will end other than violence?
My milieu is predominately meek, exceedingly almost irritatingly law abiding citizens and upstanding upright straight arrows and goody two shoes.
The anger and frustration and the rage that is being stoked in these ordinary calm cool and collected straight arrows is palpable and is spread across scores of millions of much less meek and much less reticent citizens.
It boggles the mind how blind a burgeoning zeitgeist can make ordinary people.
And it is encapsulated perfectly in Appalled's question about whether we were aware of how we looked to someone outside looking in. The many unjustified and unexamined assumptions in that question demonstrate not only the blindness that a stridently coercive culture produces in those coerced by it [often subconsciously] but it documents why they are so shocked when those people they are patronizingly trying to advise not to trust their lying eyes eventually revolt when the pressure and coercion become more than they will tolerate.
If we take the time to observe just a bit in what's going on around us, those many questions I have always wondered about regarding how people historically couldn't see what was happening or about to happen that is so obvious to some at the time and everyone afterwards are being answered.
In a time in which this type of societal pressure and irrationality is large and growing it seems the only people who really continue to see clearly are the perpetrators of the pressure and the targets of it. Everyone else is just a manipulated dupe because the manipulators know how to induce a sheep like stupor in the persuadables.
It is eerily similar to the conflict I had with my brother and family.
He knew exactly what he was doing and what was going on as he was instigating it. My wife and I did as well because we were the targets of it. But those who carried my brother's water not only thought they were doing the right thing they had no clue they had been manipulated into doing truly evil things. Like Appalled they wondered if my wife and I understood just how bad we looked, even though objectively we were doing absolutely nothing wrong but in fact were being attacked without cause by the very people who assumed their own righteousness and our well deserved punishment.
The main difference is in a society wide phenomenon there is no outside third party to observe objectively. With my family craziness there were objective third parties to independently confirm that my family was indeed crazy. But with a whole culture swept up in the craziness there are three groups but none are truly outside the conflict; the manipulators, the targets and those who are manipulated. Anyone who refuses to be manipulated becomes a target so there is no truly neutral third party for a reality check.
The nature of that kind of conflict still assures us that the clearest minded observers will still be the attackers and the targets but it behooves the targets to recheck themselves frequently and if possible ignore or jettison those targets who were themselves not exactly all there before things began.
Weirdos are equal opportunity attachments to every group.

Maryrose,
I only block people on Twitter who continually harass me with vile insults. I don't want those in the replies on my time line - I am talking about people who accuse me of vulgar sexual activity with the President and threats of violence to me or my family.
Otherwise, if it's people like Bill Kristol, I simply don't follow them and igore them if they show up in a retweet.

Israeli airstrikes on Iran-backed militias in Syria killed dozens of people, among them 40 members of forces allied with Assad, according to independent war monitors

I would say the CDC needs to urgently figure out what is happening on Capitol Hill. There IS some sort of infectious brain eating pathogen spreading around. But I think many of the professionals there have it too, so it could be tough for them to figure out the problem.

--By the way, IA is probably run by anarchists rather than communists.--
There is no longer any more functional difference between the two than there was between Stalinists and Trotskyites.
--Seems like if you deleted the stupid stuff you did, you should have a right to keep them deleted.--
Ideally, but I imagine publishing it publicly in the first place waives whatever expectation of privacy one might have had, unless it was published mistakenly and not something you just reconsidered.

Oh good grief.
There is nothing wrong with blocking or killfiling a poster you just do not care to bother with. Ditto the right to not answer the phone if you don't know the caller ID (or even if you do but care not to speak with the caller). Or read the stories in a paper that interest you and skip the others.
Besides it is "secret" so you are not even offending anybody or picking a fight.

Wouldn't that a "bill of attainder" Article I. Section IX, Clause III ?
A rather interesting point. It would seem somewhat parallel to United States v. Lovett.

Ig, in my world they call it sheep, predators and sheepdogs. Such is life.
The loss of objective news and truths is the greatest damage we can imagine to a civil society.

Ig, obviously you are free to play with Appalled all you like.
But all the more reason to ID the quote you are responding too so an Iggy Fan can SOB so as to not get sucked into a place one might prefer to avoid.
Who are your 3:24 and 3:31 responding to, for example?

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) blasted what he called the double standard of his Democrat colleagues on the House floor on Wednesday, reminding Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) that he stood as the "first objector" to the results during the same process in 2017.
"In his opening remarks, the Democrat chair of the Rules Committee said that Republicans last week voted to overturn the results of an election," Jordan began.
"Guess who the first objector was on January 6, 2017? First objector. The Democrat chair of the Rules Committee. And guess which state he objected to? Alabama. The very first state called," Jordan said, noting Trump won the state by a massive margin.

In a precedential opinion, the Third Circuit ruled yesterday that it is a federal crime to open a supervised injection site or “consumption room” for illegal drug use. Local nonprofit Safehouse planned to open the nation’s first such consumption room in the City of Philadelphia, where individuals would be invited to inject heroin and use other drugs under supervision.

Matt:
Totally agree.
I have not watched regular channel news for years.
Now with Fox going haywire,
I shift between Newsmax or OAN. With occasional Hannity or Ingraham.
What has happened this election cycle is a tragedy but not the end of the world.
We will survive this and once again President Trump has exposed the true character and motives of the Dems and the Repubs.

MM, not just calling us Nazis for four years, they denied us a fully functioning President whom we elected by a landslide in 2016 to MAGA. And shamed us for electing him.
