--Iggy, I just watched some of the video of the gal you want to marry. Was it the bikini or the power tree trimmer that was the clincher?

She does seem a little “off” to me, but maybe that’s a plus.--

Yeah, it's unclear how much is acting and how much is staged or real, but she's easy on the eyes in the extreme, likes to fish and hunt...what else is there?
The sad thing is her mom is in some of the videos and I'm pretty sure I'm even older than her mom. :(
The pole saw was a plus, I must admit.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

As to Jeeps, they are incredibly capable and their drivetrains, especially the old GM originated straight six were close to bulletproof.
It's just that everything around the drivetrain usually broke off, fell off, rusted out or wore out.

henry

The newer Jeep’s retain form without capability. Don’t even offer a manual transmission anymore. Pffft. You’d have to look in AZ for a CJ someone stuffed a small block in.

henry

(Or so it seems)

Jim Eagle

When I lived in the UP I had a Jeep CJ-7 with ragtop. Talk about brave to drive it around in a UP winter. But it was very reliable. So much so it was used as a support vehicle in the Press On Regardless rally. Car and Driver magazine had a rally car that the editor drove and picked my volunteer Jeep for their team. A lot of fun carrying spare tires, gas and tools around from one stage to the other.

Davod

MT. Yes. Thanks. Fibergrate looks like a great product. My problem is that my front walkway and the front deck are made of wood planks, so it would be difficult to use the Fibergrate.
I also do not have a covered front porch.

I will probably go with one of the pother suggestions, the Waterhog matting, laid in my hallway.

Jane

I never had a Jeep. I feel so left out!

Jim Eagle

I just remember the drivers/editors name at C&D. Don Sherman.

henry,
I love a manual on a Porsche or Jag but I have to admit I have never understood the desire for one while offroading. Autos are so much more flexible and useful when rockcrawling IMO. I know that's sacrilege in some parts but my real world experience says 'sod off consensus'.

Dave (in MA)

USPS used to use Jeeps, then they switched to custom Grumman light trucks. Now, just this week thy announced they're rolling out a fleet of Peyton Mannings.

Jim Eagle

Absolutely fascinating story.

Jack,

Thanks for that link to the story about Juanita Moody and the Cuban Missile Crisis, which I remember quite well, as I was in jimor high.

Now answer this: do you think that her nephew William Peter Jacobsen III is related to the legal professor who used to appear on C-SPAN sometimes?

Marlene

I will probably give up my Jeep Grand Cherokee at some point later this year. *sob*
I really don't need it in Florida. Hubby can keep his Jeep, but I'll get something else.
I'm thinking about a Honda CRV. I'd love a Mini Cooper, but even in Florida without snow and ice, I'm not sure about such a little car that could be squished. :)

henry

Marlene, from what my mom and brother tell me, you want a tank of some kind in SW Florida. Too many elderly drivers (in their own tanks). You want a car that can take a hit without sacrificing the occupants.

clarice

Correct,Henry. Get a big assed car, Marlene

henry

My brother drives the 62 vette that used to be up here in my barn. Sweet ride, but he mostly drives it in the summer when traffic is much less.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Marlene, going from a Jeep to a Mini Cooper is frying pan to fire territory as far as reliability.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Excellent article by Caroline Glick on Kashoggi Uber Alles.

We drove hubby's Ford truck here the first couple of years. A PITA to park, but I always felt safe. :) The parking lots are the worst!
This morning when we got back from the computer shop, the sandhill crane family was walking in the middle of our street. I stood in the sidewalk in front of our house to wave the cars to slow down. All the neighbors were talking pictures, so most of the drivers got a clue to slow down. The sandhill crane family finally crossed the street from our driveway across a lawn down to one of the ponds. I stood there until they crossed the street to caution any drivers. The little ones are adorable. They run like gawky kids on their skinny legs.

CCGirl

Marlene, I love my Honda CRV. I am high up, and it’s a great car. I was in an accident 4 months into it, and it saved me from worse injuries. ($17,000 in damages). When my husband drives it he always says how much he likes it. (I told him he should buy one, but he didn’t listen!)

MissMarple2

CCGirl,

I will never have a vehicle that isn't an SUV. As I have gotten older, getting DOWN into a sedan and then getting UP to exit is increasingly painful with old knees and hip joints.

With an SUV I can simply swivel and stand up.

I also like being up high. Must be because I am a short person and like the advantage.

Narciso

Jane

Marlene,

Get a convertible. Think of the fun we’ll have!

Marlene

Jane, we can take the roof off of hubby's Jeep! I want to go to Boca Grande and collect shells! Have you heard from Stephanie?

Jane

AVWBug convertable! I had one back in the day. school bus yellow! I loved it. I will say my Mercedes is the most comfortable car I’ve ever had. When I got in to test drive it, it called my name. (Btw rhe trick to finding a car is finding the one that calls your name)

Jane

Marlene,

I talked to Stephanie 2 days ago. She was a block away but too busy to come over. I think she’s on her way back to Atlanta to pick up more stuff.

Jane

I just got my first drill. Next a lesson on how to use it (with 1 eye). Watch out!

Dave (in MA): came across a posting on LinkedIn where the poster regretted that USPS hadn’t gone all electric.
Frankly, I really didn’t feel the USPS' problems were in the "last mile" as I recently had a package stuck between Harrisburg and Philadelphia for 3 weeks, on it’s 6 week journey from San Luis Obispo

CCGirl

MissM, I am short too!

Jane, be careful! You will be fine - you go girl!

I hear horror stories in the store. A woman told me her husband, someone my age who I have known since we were young, did this:

He was at his cabin in Maine. He was working in the garage on his snow mobile. First he accidentally hit himself in the cheek with a sledgehammer. (Ouch!). Then he apparently decided to keep doing whatever foolishness he was doing. He swung the sledge at the snowmobile again, missed, and broke his shin! (Mother of God!). He’s not a drinker. I don’t know what to think. He’s a normal, capable guy.

She then says it started snowing, and he wanted to go home. So he propped his leg up on a beach ball and drove home three - four hours in the storm. Apparently he is still in loads of pain, and she’s a bit perplexed about his behavior.

The only thing I can think is that I know so many guys who have had stupid injuries this year - falling off of ladders, etc. They are all skilled contractors. I think they are distracted by what’s going on, and the fact that they are slammed with work. They are unable to focus as well as they normally do.

CCGirl

When I graduated from high school, my big brother, Boat Builder, graduated from law school in NC. He had a used Cadillac Sedan Deville. It ended up being my car for the summer. Huge car. I could parallel park that sucker!

Dave (in MA)

I'm trying to imagine a non-drinking scenario that ends up with sledgehammering snowmobiles.

CCGirl

I know Dave!

MissMarple2

Sometimes I find that I don't have the strength I had a few years ago, like getting new caps off of jars of mayonnaise and stuff like that.

I used to do all sorts of physical labor without any problem, but since we moved here and I quit taking care of a larger house and gardening very much, I find I am losing strength and probably need to exercise more.

Perhaps the guy with the sledgehammer simply underestimated his current abilities.

CCGirl

I am very jealous, Jane.

Narciso

I would think wrench pliers, but not sledgehammer.

CCGirl

I know nothing about snowmobiles, and so didn’t feel it was appropriate to ask.

CCGirl

Sorry Henry, I was -1 years old in ‘65. 🤭. I have a pathetic list of vehicles - three in a row were minivans.

jimmyk

Maybe the isolation makes people act a little crazy.

The isolation, the whole political situation, the absurdity that we're not being allowed to live our lives as free humans, express ideas that might offend someone without risking our careers, and so on. Yeah, it's certainly made me a bit more irritable and impatient.

Last week I got exasperated because our "smart" TV was being not so smart and not letting me tune to regular cable stations. After a few minutes of frustrating non-responsiveness, I tossed the remote in the general direction of the TV, not intending to inflict damage, but it hit the screen, and that was the end of that TV. Good riddance, but I did have to take the time to replace it (just a basic 43" model which I got for $220). I didn't let on to the missus how the TV mysteriously broke, so I hope she's not reading this.

Narciso

Yes living in gotham would put anyone on edge.

CcGirl, I got my drivers license in 75. I owned one new car... it was a magnet for bad drivers to crash into. Every other car on that list was over 100k when I bought it.

Jane

CCgirl,

I don’t blame you. I never ever wanted to move to Florida. I never even wanted to visit Florida, I came here for business one year - spent 6 weeks I Naples and was not terribly impressed. Then I visited a friend in Port Charlotte - at an over 55 community - and for some ungodly reason, bought a home. Moved down 6 months later- and rented out my condo. I still have no idea why I did it, but my friend here was a broker and probably very good i\at it. I traded a $400k condo for an $85k manufactured home.

A year later I sold my condo. It took me a couple of years to get my mind here - and now -with enormous help from my governor, I love it. I love my home and pretty much live on my lanai. I love love love being free. If I was still up north I doubt I’d be alive still!

Most people start out here part time. But since I grew up poor l couldn’t imagine juggling that. It took one summer to get used to the heat, and now I’m fine with it, (it was 89 this afternoon). Anyway, too much information, but very doable. Do it soon tho as prices are soaring.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Yeah, cc, I don't remember my dad bouncing one off his head and then his shinbone.

I do however remember watching him slide his shin bone skin back and forth over his shin bone which I could see through the small window he had created with his chainsaw. 😬

Dave (in MA)

Yike.

Narciso

My grandfather settled down in miami after he came from spain in 1978, he lived in a one bedroom without airconditioning just those electric fans that was the first place my mother stayed in when she came down in the spring of 1980, not an optimum time one might say the mariel boatlift started right around that time followed by the riots i came a few months later.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Cripes;
Vox hag thinks Dolly Parton has a 'dark side' because she doesn't hate the right people and because she didn't burn down anyone's store "following the 'police shooting' of George Floyd"

Guess Vox does employ imbeciles but not editors.

jimmyk

Jane, just curious: Have you made a lot of friends there? That's the thing that would scare me about relocating. I find the older I get, the harder it is to make new friends, and I think that's a common sentiment. Of course, if enough of our old friends relocate, that makes it easier.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Interesting video by the hot Virginny chick.
Some weird, old dude [not me, I swear] was apparently catfished by some scammer into thinking he was having a long distance relationship with the hot chick. Hijinx ensued. Pretty frightening ones.
People are so frickin weird...and stupid.

henry

Well, Trump brought peace to the Middle East, so Xiden must bring all out war.

Narciso

You cant fix that level of stupid, maybe they mixed up with blake. But you know what that would mean

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Apparently "Incognito", like "Don't be evil", has a separate, distinct and opposite usage within the hipster halls of the Googlereich as it does out here in the rest of the world.

CCGirl

Dave, I believe the left worships all kinds of false idols. Tell her that.

Ig, ouch!

Jane, for now we are setting up this house. Shed and generator in the spring. I just cut all of the wood for the garden fence today - slow rainy day at the store. Hubs and I are both too young to up and leave. In two years the youngest will be out of college. We shall see where we are at that point.

Regarding the injuries caused by distraction - I do find that I take extra care when doing something potentially injurious these days. I know I am healthy, but a careless step could throw my life completely out of whack. So before I start a task, like cutting wood in the chop saw today, I take care to focus and concentrate. Sometimes the kids tell me I am silly, because I am not old, but I don’t think they understand distraction and it’s ugly consequences yet.

Jane

Jimmy,

I’m in a community, so friends are pretty easy. Lots of activities if you want them. Having always been single, I’m a bit of a loner, but there is no shortage of friends. Because Kiwi couldn’t be alone for the last few years, I wasn’t all that social, but I’m getting better.

MissMarple2

CCGirl,

Distraction is a really big problem and acsounts for almost all of my bumps and falls over the last 20 years. Now that I am older, I try to avoid anything that requires dangerous implements or serious concentration.

Stephanie Nene Not Your Normal Granma

Hi, all!

The furniture got delivered yesterday and the movers were back today to unload it and set up the beds and such. We still have way too much furniture! The Ethan Allen leather couch would not fit through enough spaces to get it into the family room, so it is now a permanent resident of the Florida room. Luckily, the Florida room is enclosed and air conditioned. Now to buy a new leather sofa and take care to make sure the new one will fit through all enclosures. I'm thinking a reclining section... maybe.

Anyways we are slowly settling in. Heading back to the ATL on Friday to pick up the dogs. We'll still have to make one more trip in the next few months to retrieve a 10 x 10 storage room's worth of crap that didn't fit in the moving van. Gotta get the shit that is in the garage into the attic first. It is mostly Christmas stuff. OMG I have way too much Christmas decorations.

jimmyk

People are so frickin weird...and stupid.

Yes, though she seems to be a tad naive to think that when she decided to be an "influencer," it wouldn't inevitably lead to unpleasant consequences like that. Not blaming the victim, but this whole phenomenon of "influencers" is one of the more abominable products of social media.

CCGirl

JimmyK, hubs has threatened many times to throw the tv remote through the nice professionally wall mounted tv that I finally allowed in the living room. If he does I may kill him 😜.

I get the part about meeting new people. If all of us from jom move to the same general area then we would be all set! If we do buy in FL, the Sarasota area is where I would like to be.

Jane

Jimmy, the one thing I didn’t want was to be around a bunch of lawyers and doctors, so I’m in a very middle class place with firefighters and cops.- lots and lots to learn. Although I’m still amazed at how many people here want to be the boss - which after years of running my own law firm, is the very last thing I’d want to do in retirement.

Jane

Welcome home Stephanie!

henry

Congrats on the new home, Stephanie!

Narciso

Credentialed idiocy galore

https://mobile.twitter.com/Doranimated/status/13657586314515210

CCGirl

Jane, that’s why I love the store. I work with all types of people from lawyers to contractors, from Boston Brahmins to pot-smelling locals (one super friendly, but stinky one today). Had to spray the air after he left. 🙄

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

What was weird and stupid was some 58 year old dude thought he had a relationship with some 20 something youtube girl.
She does seem maybe a bit naive but she also didn't seem to have sought the 'influencer' thing. Apparently she had a Facebook account with her real name which I suspect is how he found her.
None too smart.

MissMarple2

Jane,

I know what you mean. I was relieved the first year I didn't have to do taxes on my eBay store (which was pretty profitable). It required a lot of record-keeping and I was surprised how much of my time it actually took up when I quit doing it. Running a law firm would be 1000 times worse!

MissMarple2

Narciso,

Your credentialed idiocy post has been disappeared.
