My local friend and I were discussing this on the phone the other day. I had NO idea there was this much creepy stuff going on, and I have worked in retail, mining, service industries, etc. as well as having done volunteer work. She has similar experience and is a tad younger than I am.

When I was a child I would walk 2 blocks from our little bungalow on a dirt lane behind my dad's shop to a hardware store on the nearest main street where I would wait on their porch for the school bus. All by myself, age 6. My only admonition from my mother was "Don't talk to strangers."

I now look back and wonder if 1954 was safer or if we were living in a fool's paradise. I cannot imagine letting a child do that now.

Miss M et al, when I was on the elementary school committee (I can’t remember what it was called) the principal was pushing hard for more security at the end of the school day. I recall arguing that the rates of abduction and such were lower, and that she was setting up a system of fear. I too walked to kindergarten and first grade - sometimes “alone” as there were lots of other kids out and about. I lost.

I recall wondering at times if the abduction rates are lower because we all keep an eye out more, and don’t let our kids walk about alone anymore. I really don’t know. But I know that most school administrators know which kids are at high risk due to family custody battles, and they could let everyone else run free.
