Henry, my favorite class was Donald Kagan's on Greek history, where once a term certain lucky students got to come to the front and demonstrate a phalanx.
Hi, narc--yes, and also by then the most important Faulkner scholar ever--I got into the seminar by reading about seven of the major works over the summer of my junior year, so he had to take me in (these "fellow" seminars had competitive registration).
Sbw, my conference will be back in Rochester next March--the society was very fortunate as the hotel allowed everything to be rolled over for two years in the future! Plus the virtual conference we had this March was actually pretty good--we upped our international registration by 400%--if you were a literary scholar in Lahore, for instance, you could participate, if accepted, for $35 or $50 (grad student or faculty) rather than the at least $5K it would have taken otherwise to get here--$10K seems a fairer estimate. The only problem is that the scholarship from the Indian end was well done but a tad dull--too much interest in the kind of feminist analysis which was in its heyday in the 80s.
I have every hope I will see you and also perhaps Robin (not rse, whom I am privileged to see in Atlanta when I can) and perhaps even CH and really anyone within distance!

Narciso, nothing like a lecture mixed with slides of Papuans breaking their penis gourds on the high bar Pospisil set up (he was a gymnast in his youth), or the local use of flint chips for surgery followed by maggots to cure an infected deep cut he had (pics of the cut plus him showing his arm with no scar). Then the comments on the communism he escaped from. He was special.

https://hotair.com/archives/jazz-shaw/2021/03/27/will-biden-let-eviction-moratorium-expire/
Now that the weather is warming up we need to let the evictions begin. This has to happen sooner or later, and now is just as good a time as any other.
The states should be in charge of this, not the federal government.
I really don't understand the legal basis for extending this at the federal level and wasn't that humongous Covid bill chock full of money going to the states to ameliorate this problem?
Posted by: jim nj | March 28, 2021 at 02:09 AM
While an eviction moratorium may have had some good short-term effects, it's now like that huge cargo ship stuck in the Suez Canal. Like that ship, the curtailed eviction process is blocking progress to a new equilibrium and distorting the demand and supply of housing.
I'm sure the governors wouldn't mind some more political cover, but they aren't going to see any real estate political campaign contributions in the meantime.
And I am still of the believe that illegal immigrants comprise the majority of the people at risk of eviction.
I want to see how that plays out when legal citizens are asked to pay for that.

Who expected "Dracula" to be a novel about political philosophy and politics in practice!
From Michael Smith on facebook — search "utahprez" on Facebook to find him.
"I was thinking about the players, the vampires (Dracula and his succubae), the familiars (the humans who assist the vampires like Renfield in the book), the victims (Miss Lucy Westenra and her mother), the public (the general population and the townsfolk) and the vampire hunters (like Mina, Harker, Holmwood, Seward, Morris -the Texan, and Dr. Van Helsing, of course) and how like our current sociopolitical conflicts parallel Stoker’s characters.
"First, we have the antagonists, the vampires. They exist in the world of the undead, having lost their souls in their transition from human to demon. They roam the night, shapeshifting and casting spells on their targets, always content to take life and survive off the life blood of those with beating hearts.
"Then there are the familiars – the humans who live in service to the vampire, either out of paralyzing, nihilistic fear or because they want to please their masters in hopes of becoming a vampire themselves one day.
...
"Now think of this 1897 story in 2021 socioeconomic terms – we clearly have vampires, groups that seek to live off the life blood of others. That’s how government agencies work and that is what the communist agendas of BLM, the various race baiting groups who push Critical Race Theory, the Cloward-Piven cabals looking to crash the welfare system through open borders, the Green Nude Eel bunch, looking to destroy our economy to save the planet – are all about - all of these groups are vampires sucking on the jugular of American life.
...
"The people are all of America’s general population, the largest percentage of whom have no idea vampires exist. They cannot see them, won’t look for them, cannot even conceive of such a thing and because they cannot, they don’t exist – but there are townsfolk who have witnessed the terror, have lost friends and family to the bloodsuckers, and know vampires are real. They take steps to protect themselves. Today, that would amount to fighting to protect the Constitution and the Bill of rights (especially the First and Second Amendments) because the townsfolk know that our contemporary vampires fear these two things as much as the vampires of lore feared crosses, garlic, and the vamps know the First and Second Amendments are the wooden stakes.
"Then there are the intrepid vampire hunters. Like Arthur Holmwood (who dug up the body of his fiancé, Lucy Westenra, and drove a stake in her heart), these are the people committed to tracking down Dracula’s fifty boxes of graveyard dirt and eliminating him once and for all. These are people like Milton Freidman, Rush Limbaugh, Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, Ron DeSantis, Tucker Carlson and Dr. Abraham Van Helsing reincarnated himself, Donald J. Trump (and many more) who want nothing more than to end the scourge of vampirism even at the risk of their lives and fortunes."
As Smith says, dystopia is less "Brave New World and "1984" than "Dracula".

I went for a mid-day, sun out, hour walk yesterday in Pill Hill area and 400 and at points the sky was yellow at the level up to about 200 feet from ground.
I came home and took a shower as soon as I finished stretching to make sure all traces of pollen were gone. I have made the mistake in past of forgetting it will stay in my hair otherwise and I wake up feeling like a sledge hammer pummeled my sinuses all night.
Posted by: rse | March 28, 2021 at 10:19 AM
Narciso,
The article says unloading it might take weeks because they will need a 200-foot crane to unload it.
Doesn't the US have big helicopters that can lift those containers one-by-one? I assume other countries have them also. Start with one team removing containers from one end of the ship and one from the other. Have teams in staging areas to load the containers onto trucks. Is this not feasible?

I have read that the pollen we can see is not the culprit - that there is pollen with smaller particles that invade our lungs/sinuses. It does seem to appear at the same time the yellow cloud descends.
I hoped the storm with high winds and rain would dissipate the pollen but when I opened my trash receptacle this morning a yellow cloud arose. (cough, cough, sniffle)

Jim Eagle,
I am watching this with some interest. Wictor seems to think he IS the President, due to some convoluted reasoning and military movements and stuff. I think that's fanciful and wouldn't have thought it of Wictor.
I must say, however, that Trump is probably the ONLY one who can get people like Acosta to go down there and actually cover it.
By the way, does anyone know why all of a sudden Garcetti decidied to get the homeless encampment vacated? Someone on Twitter thought that there might have been Antifa hiding amongst them.

St Hubbins was the patron saint of QUALITY FOOTWEAR.
St Biden is the Patron saint of SLEAZE.

They got the bailout, no further need for the imagery.

Duh! I should have thought of that!

Miss M. The evidence if BIDENS' mental and physical decline is OVERWHELMING. WICTOR can run his cake hole anyway and for any REASON he wants.
THE EVIDENCE OF BIDEN NOT BEING IN CONTROL IN ANY WAY IS PLAIN TO SEE.
FULL COMMIES understand this, and are taking advantage of it. BIDEN is NOT the President.
