Its very important to progressives that Asian-Americans feel themselves to be threatened by whites. Far too important an agenda item to be left to mere facts and fate.
From a different direction, Slate chatted with a properly progressive prof who was intent on explaining that any notion of Asian-American tension with Blacks is just lazy thinking. Are you remembering Korean-American shopkeeprs standing on their store rooftops during the LA riots? Or Al Sharpton leading protests against Asian-American deli owners in NYC? Don't be lazy!
And if you use that frame, you make it an Asian-Black thing, you’re focusing on the two groups and taking attention away from the larger structures of power in which they’re embedded—not just racial structures, but also capitalism. Think about the relationship between Korean merchants buying a liquor store in Compton, and their Black customers. This is about capitalism, the way it creates divisions between groups and deems certain people disposable.
Slate closes with solid advice from the professor - even if you're getting assaulted by a Black person, remember the real enemy!
But I think it’s important, when looking at violence against Asian Americans, not to lose that context. When Asian Americans understandably feel fear and anger and sorrow about these attacks on our own communities, I think we also have to ask ourselves, Are we fighting for Black lives as hard as we’re fighting for our own? It’s in moments like this that it’s really difficult to remember, because we’re afraid and upset. But to remember that we are advantaged, compared to Black people, is what it takes to be a good ally—even though it can be very hard, at times like these. But I think these are the moments when it’s the most important to do it.
--Their superior knowledge" is EXACTLY how most of these dim bulbs act on Twitter.--
Noting the stupidity of someone else who actually is stupid is often an act of kindness.
But when you're the dope, noting others' stupidity relative to yours, or more commonly your group's, is a mark of severe insecurity.

MM, your arguments do not repudiate OL's point--Trump failed on Covid by allowing Fauci and Brix to determine our path.
He was the boss; he chose to follow what the two of them were saying, despite having access to others giving him different information. He chose to not add anyone with a differing perspective to the advisory team until it was far too late.
Donald Trump did that, not any corrupt Swamp dweller, FBI agent, or Republican lawyer. Paul Ryan had not a thing in the world to do with it either.
OL is NOT "throwing pot shots" at Trump, and continually characterizing any criticism or even analysis of Trump as that is how to earn the cheerleader label and diminish the value of your opinion.
It makes you sound like a Trump cultist, or a school girl with a crush on her favorite teacher. That is who has blindspots--somebody who doesn't want to see.
Failure to step back and remove emotional attachment from this man who did do a huge amount of good is of absolutely no benefit in moving the MAGA agenda forward.
Acknowledging mistakes so as to not repeat them will.
Pointing out how Trump failed on Covid does NOT in any way say HE was a failure, or that he did not make magnificent strides in energy independence, our economy, foreign relations, border safety and security.
Or that he doesn't love and put America first. Or that one won't be forever grateful for all of that.
We need a candidate in 2024 who will have Trump's strengths without his weaknesses and the ability to find good help.
(A certain governor of Florida comes to my mind. We'll see--it's a long way off.)
But demonizing people who won't join in pretending Trump is some kind of perfect president isn't going to help in the search for a winning candidate.
You are not defending Trump when you do that--you are defending your idealization of him, and that is not dealing with reality.

Anon: But demonizing people who won't join in pretending Trump is some kind of perfect president isn't going to help in the search for a winning candidate.
Fweet! Hyperbole alert!
It is one thing to say, "In retrospect I wish Trump had others than Fauci and Birx or that he had kept them off the stage." It is quite another to say that Trump screwed up.
O.L. can be forceful, repetitive, and persistent in his presentation and I don’t mind. I take in the useful points and SOB when to me it seems to overlook Trump’s positives. Trump deserves credit as THE ONLY ONE who could have done what he did faced with over-the-top failure of Democrats who stand for party over country, and media infatuated with popular opinion in place of news. And that he uncovered for us snakes hidden under every bureaucratic rock.
Perfect? Of course not. Flawed? A helluva lot less flawed than anyone else on that stage. Important and timely? Damn straight!

anonamom,
What people were there to take Fauci's place, or Brix's? He had TWO of them giving him advice at the same time. I certainly am not an expert in viruses, nor was I able to recommend someone who would have been better. I am not a doctor, and neither is Trump, who is pretty smart but not in medicine. Did you send a letter to his chief of staff or DNI? How was Trump to know what a scumball Fauci was? FBI or CIA intelligence reports? Yeah, right.
He put supposedly trustworthy Pence in charge of the program. He got the vaccination program into high gear. He got one of those GM plants to build more ventilators, according to the best recommendations at the time. When he talked about HCQ a bunch of doctors started carrying on about how it was dangerous. When he tried (and I will admit inartfully) to explain how some of the vaccines worked, the press accused him of telling everyone to inject themselves with bleach.
Fauci was not in the Rose Garden every day, although Pence pretty much was. (When Fauci wasn't, he was on CNN or MSNBC, so I don't see what difference his location made.)
I see no way that Trump could have stopped him from being the spokesman. He was deemed THE expert by the media. He couldn't have been fired because he is a civil servant, and unless there was PROOF of his wrongdoing, which we hadn't an inkling of until much later in this fiasco, there was no way to get rid of him.
If Trump had ordered him to quit speaking, you know damn well Fauci would have been in front of the cameras playing the noble victim and abuse of power would have been added to the impeachment charges.
I don't idealize President Trump, but it does seem to me that he stepped forward when we needed someone like him, and I will not be apologetic of my admiration for him. Period.

Posted by: henry | March 20, 2021 at 06:38 PM
We decided that today was going to be an explore day, so after breakfast we jumped in the car and headed for Boca Grande and adventures west.
Boca was nice, we will need to explore the town more. The beach was chilly and the water was about Amelia Island water temps over last Memorial Day (coldish). Ariel got to the top of the slope down to the waves and came to a dead stop. The waves were not large, but it was choppy. I started picking up a few shells and she finally joined me. We lasted about 20 minutes on the beach.
On to Sharky's on the Pier in Venice. 45 minute wait for lunch indoors (90 outside) but it was chillier than Boca was, so we opted for inside. We took Ariel out on the pier and she saw some birds, but no one was catching anything. Lunch was good. Back in the car and Ariel was about to zone out, so we skipped the planned trip to the bird rookery at the Audubon Park and headed home.
I need more recs for places to go. Payne Park is also on my list as it evidently has a large kids playground themed around circuses... what a surprise from the home of Ringling Bros.
Mote Aquarium, Ringling Museum and ????
We're going to go to Venice Beach next weekend and maybe downtown Venice for some shops if anyone has any suggestions on fun shops. The weather is projected for low 90s YEAH!!!

MM, Just off the top of my head--
Americans who could have been Trump advisors include two of the the three authors of the Barrington Declaration, Scott Atlas, the epidemiologist from Yale who spoke out early on about the fallacy of lockdowns, and the Johns Hopkins MPH whose op ed I posted last week.
These are some of the advisors whose advice he could have taken beside Fauci's and Brix's.
At the least, they should have been in the room challenging Fauci's assertions, like Rand Paul did the other day... because he wouldn't have had much anything to defend them with, like the other day.
Posting your laundry list of the good he did do--and he did plenty-- does NOT change the fact that his reliance on F and B proved to be a HUGE error.
The list could be ten, a hundred times longer--it will not change the fact this happened.
Your admiration of Trump for all the good he has done is not what I am addressing--your accusing anyone discussing his errors in judgement or execution and missteps as spreading gloom and doom or being disloyal is.
Posted by: anonamom | March 20, 2021 at 08:04 PM
Hmmm- Michigan judge last week says the Secretary of State ordering the mail in ballots to be treated as they were is unconstitutional.
Maricopa is to be recounted--what happens if those two states' elections get UNverified.
Can that happen??
Is something going on in GA right now as well?

Finally! done with the Kroger order.
Went out to get a Diet coke and discovered I had put the ice cream in the fridge instead of the freezer. Hoping it wasn't THAT much melted , I pulled the lid off and dropped it and got about a quart of ice cream, mostly melted, all over the floor! Spattered up on the cabinet and on the register vent, too!
So then I had to wipe it up with paper towels and then mop. Ugh. That will teach me to be more patient and less argumentative. LOL!

Yeah, my plan today was to read out on the lanai, but as soon as I sat down, the clouds rolled in. Stephanie, all the shops in Venice are fun! Ariel will love the toy store. Venice Beach is known for shark teeth. Walmart sells the nifty tool to sift for the shark teeth. We'd like to take you to Snook Haven on the Myakka River. It was a fish camp back in the day and now is a very rustic restaurant (same owners as Sharky's and Fin's). Old Florida. Legend says that Tarzan movies were filmed on the Myakka, but we learned from a visit to the Venice Historical Society that isn't true. Although a few really old movies that required "jungle" settings were filmed on the Myakka.

I don't think Trump could have done anything that would have altered the blue state governors' power grab, but if he had brought in the likes of the people I mentioned (Bhattacharya, Ioannides, Atlas) early on, he could have had the best of both worlds: A bully pulpit preaching that the lockdowns aren't necessary or even helpful, that the panic and fear are overreactions, while letting the guvs take responsibility for their policies. That would have rallied support for him from the sane side of the political spectrum. In the end I'm not sure how much difference it would have made, though, given the MSM howling dogs and the vote fraud.

Looking back, maybe he should have come out super-aggressively for total lockdowns, masks, the whole Karen-fear-porn package, and demanded that all governors get with the program.
That would have guaranteed that the blue state governors and Dems and MSM generally would have violently opposed all those policies and we'd have been massively better off.

Who are the Huns and Visigoths in the VDH metaphor? The Chinese? Or is the view that the Romans destroyed themselves from within? I know that's the conventional view, but I recently read Peter Heather's book arguing that it was really the barbarians who brought down the empire, not internal corruption and decay. We are certainly destroying ourselves.

The daughter called tonight and wanted to know if I could find her an apartment around here. ASAP. Even if she has to break her lease in Charlotte.
There was a shooting IN THE FOOD COURT at Northlake Mall in Charlotte right in front of her today while working at the CFA. Most of her employees working that shift were like 15 yo's, too. She had to call all the parents to come and get them. Now how many will show up for work on Monday??? The store owner is on vacay and K is managing everything (like usual - he barely even comes in his own damn store). He's gonna shit a brick when she moves. :)
Once the po-po got everything under control, the mall shut everything down, and they were only allowed to turn off the cooking equipment before they were forced out of the building. No throwing out the cooked food or anything. Gonna be a hell of a mess come Monday.

You are the first person I know ever to have read a book by David French. I thought librarians kept them under lock and key.

Jane, Caro and I could probably get down there for your JOM party if it’s in the second half of October.
Stephanie, if you have room for it, an induction cooktop runs off electricity, changes temperature as quickly as or quicker than gas burners, and is super easy to clean. The only hitch is that you have to use cooking utensils with iron in them, like stainless steel and cast iron. Induction is almost the perfect cooktop solution.
