How's this for a confession? Will cancelling CRT catch this shift in focus?

Throughout our history, this has often manifested as a commitment to two very big and very racist and classist ideas:

The metaphor that the US is a “melting pot,” achieved through the cultural assimilation of Indigenous peoples, immigrants, and ethnic, racial and religious “minorities.”
The notion that the American Dream of social mobility and economic success is accessible to anyone who works hard enough, and therefore anyone who does not achieve the Dream must simply lack work ethic. Or must not value their education. Or must not…you get the idea.

As our team at reDesign continues to converge commitment and action on our antiracism journey, we have identified the K-12 content map as one of the central educational artifacts that continues to uphold these ideals that are deeply rooted in white supremacy ideology, and in the myth of equality it hides behind.

What if the purpose of school were not assimilation, or social reproduction, but liberation? What if the purpose of formal education were to create spaces—what we call learner-centered communities—where young people:

build competency as they engage with big questions, transferable concepts, and ideas within and across disciplines;
develop critical consciousness as they critically examine injustices in the world, and explore opportunities to disrupt and transform them; and
sustain, celebrate, and center the tapestry of cultures and communities to which they belong?

This is our vision at reDesign: All young people thriving in learner-centered communities that cultivate competency, connectedness, and critical consciousness. We stand with so many others who share a vision for a reimagined education system as key a lever for advancing equity.

rse

A bit more succinct and definitely the reason behind the Mind Arson.

Together, we’ll let go of the long list of Google-able facts, formulas, and phenomena that make up so much of the K–12 scope and sequence, and we’ll prioritize disciplinary concepts and inclusive funds of knowledge that are organized in ways that are in-sync with how the brain actually learns, and how the adult world actually works.

Draft editorial: Thoughts on the Biden Transformation

In a brazen exercise of DoubleThink during his speech to Congress, President Joe Biden claimed, “It’s time we remembered that ‘We the People’ are the government. You and I.” He reverses the meaning to transform the role of government to become ruler of the people.

Biden hyperbolically called the January 6th, breach of the Capitol “the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.” He overlooked segregation, two world wars, a great depression, leftists bombing the Senate in 1983, assassinations and even attempted assassination of the Republican softball team, amongst other assaults.

Even so, Biden doesn’t give his administration enough credit. He should have led with undermining the Constitution with Executive Order overreach destined to impoverish our children. Biden has now signed more executive orders (41) than each of the last three presidents in their first 100 days, surpassing Trump (25), Obama (19), and Bush (11). He, along with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer created an imperial executive.

Biden leftists believe government should control all aspects of individual lives through heavy bureaucratic regulation, intrusive taxation, politicized agencies, usurped control of elections, managed access to information through activist media corporations, and federal control of school curricula.

The Founders established federalism to limit the scope of central government, and now Biden’s Department of Education is reaching down to the local level to dictate what our children should learn. Far better we should teach them to read, encourage why they should value reading, and let them grow to be independent individuals, not cogs in Biden’s centralized collective wheel.

Biden claims, “We have to prove democracy still works, that our government still works and we can deliver for our people,” while doing everything to replace representative democracy with autocracy. Biden leftists are racing before the mid-term elections to impose their audacious expansion of the federal government through unsustainable spending increases financed by $6 trillion of debt, and yet Biden shill CNN still calls that "moderate radicalism".

Frédéric Bastiat in 1848 wrote, "For ourselves, we consider that Government is and ought to be nothing whatever but the united power of the people, organized, not to be an instrument of oppression and mutual plunder among citizens; but, on the contrary, to secure to every one his own, and to cause justice and security to reign."

Blogger Michael Smith quoted Bastiat to expose Democrats’ belief that social bribery is a workable plan. Bastiat said, “Government is the great fiction through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else.”

The only success over time that the leftist Democrat leadership will have will be to drive local Democrats away from a party they no longer recognize or trust. Working people and those looking for jobs are turning to those who embrace individual responsibility and community for which America has always stood.

Bravo sbe

MissMarple2

sbwaters,

No critiquing your excellent editorial, but I would include the earlier attack by Puerto Rican nationalists shooting representatives and the September 11 attacks in your list of attacks.

Neo

A group of illegal aliens criminal trespassers and open borders activists were arrested on Friday by members of President Joe Biden’s secret service after blocking an intersection near the White House, demanding that Biden give them amnesty to permanently stay in the United States.
https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2021/04/30/watch-live-illegal-aliens-protest-outside-white-house-demanding-amnesty-from-joe-biden/

Neo

On March 1, 1954, four Puerto Rican Americans fired guns in the House of Representatives, injuring five congressmen. The attackers said they acted to demand independence for the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. (Puerto Ricans have U.S. citizenship but can’t vote for president and have no voting representatives in Congress.) The injured congressmen survived, and the four shooters received prison sentences. President Jimmy Carter commuted one of their sentences in 1977, and granted clemency to the other three in 1979.

On March 1, 1971, a bomb exploded in the Capitol building. While the explosion did not injure anyone, it caused some $300,000 in damage. A group calling itself the Weather Underground claimed to be behind the bombing and said it was in protest of the ongoing U.S.-supported bombing of Laos.

Thirteen years later, on November 7, 1983, a bomb tore through the second floor of the Senate wing of the Capitol. The device detonated late in the evening and no one was harmed, but it caused an estimated $250,000 in damage. A group calling itself the Armed Resistance Unit later claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in retaliation for military actions in Grenada and Lebanon. Seven people were eventually arrested in connection with the attack.

matt - deplore me if you must

Bastiat - mutual plunder...

That's where we are now and Joe is the Plunderer, and Blunderer in Chief.

$6 trillion in 100 days for corrupt, unnecessary payoffs. I hit the ceiling with the semiconductor summit and graft for that industry he's proposing.

TSMC, Intel and most of the rest do just fine on their own and will do what is in their own economic interest. Chandler is about to see a tidal wave of investment. Samsung is expanding in Austin.

Back in the 80's the government invested in SEMI in Austin. Not sure if it is still there. It produced nothing of note and sucked up @ $50 billion or more over the years. Plus ca change....

I am now an official "thought leader' in electronics manufacturing and am commissioned to do an article on the changes in the supply chain. But in reality, I am trying to get a handle on what has really changed.

Semiconductors are largely a commodity, as is the rest of anything that has a physical presence. The money is in the IP. All else is simply a widget in the service of the OEM.

Through Foxconn and a few others, Apple has built massive infrastructure at minimal cost. Much of that is now reliant on less restrictive environmental regulation, low labor costs, free land and very low taxes; the China model.

Trump's tariffs were an effort to negate some of those advantages, and while Chinese labor costs are rapidly rising, there's always Vietnam and India. India has its own issues.

So how do we change the value chain and build things in America once again?

When the manufacturing went overseas so did the supply chain, driving out many of the major players in materials, equipment etc.

To be successful it has to be all in. Every step needs a North American player from the basic chemicals and materials all the way on up. There are only 5 companies that grow and slice silicon and all of them are overseas, the vast majority in Asia.

So it is a Herculean task.

But what can government do? Industrial policy doesn't work well. Governments aren't very good at picking winners and China basically "bought" the business in every sector. They don't have most of the raw materials.

Biden seems to be hell bent on making the American worker a serf dependent upon big daddy government.

What government can do is get the hell out of the way. Now Biden's paternalism is going to reverse any of the real options in spurring innovation and research.

MJW

Throwing oneself off a building as a suicide usually negates life insurance policies.

It's widely but falsely believed that life insurance doesn't cover suicide. In fact, generally the benefit is paid if the policy's suicide clause has expired, which is typically after two or three years. However, failure to disclose existing mental health issues in the application could invalidate the policy.

(Disclaimer: I'm neither an insurance agent nor an attorney.)

Jane

Excellent SBW! I’d add 911 too, and put the part about changing “We the people”. To me the government in bold. I think a lot of people haven’t heard about that.

Jane

Hell MJW, I always think you are an attorney. Do you work in the law?

Stephanie Nene Not Your Normal Granma

I am a former insurance person, and it is almost always 2 years for the suicide clause.

And yes, failure to disclose would open up the payout of benefits to challenges; however, the MIB (medical insurance bureau) would likely catch the undisclosed illness when you apply for insurance before it is even issued.

Any pharma prescriptions or medical diagnoses are recorded there for any insurance company to reference when you are in underwriting. They are seldom incorrect.

MJW

I always think you are an attorney. Do you work in the law?

No, Jane, I don't work in the law. At some point I just got interested in legal issues, and started reading about it.

Jane,

Isn’t this the place in Star Trek where Captain Kirk and Spock devise an ingenious way to save the day?

BTW, Pence and Cruz are a little late with their plans to save America. It seems that they want to tap in to the frustration and anger of the American people and leave President Trump, the guy that created MAGA and delivered on his promises, out of the picture. That doesn't scan anymore than Resident Biden.

MissMarple2

Barbara,

I emphatically agree. Remember, Cruz stayed in the primaries long after it was obvious that he had no chance to defeat Trump. Also, if I remember correctly, his wife Heidi worked for one of the big investment firms, maybe Goldman Sachs?

No one will vote for either. Most consider Pence either a weakling or traitor, and want nothing to do with the so-called perfect conservatives, either.
