Appears to me the greatest cause if mass shootings is progs wanting to take guns from people.
Every time they try someone conveniently massacres somebody.
I'd say we need prog propaganda control.
Seriously, if it could be established conclusively that their reporting contributes to it then why shouldn't they be muzzled if gunowners can lose their rights? Why can't they be held liable if gun manufacturers can?
Why shouldn't their stories be subject to a national instant responsible reporting check?

“If progs ever learn to keep their mouths shut before they do what they really intend we'll really be in trouble.”

I agree. It seems to me that what I thought was crazy talk when I was younger and more naive, that the dems were a bunch of commies, is very true today. And now they have so much power they just blurt out what they really think. How many libs have publicly called for Trump supporters to be “re-educated?” Where I come from that is not idle chatter. That’s a threat. Gun sales have been sky-rocketing because individuals are nervous. Their cities are falling apart due to criminal decisions by mayors, etc. And the fact that people who were in DC in January are being arrested, brought to DC jails, held without bail, and held with no due-process is okay? In what world?

And it’s okay to send Chauvin to jail because we don’t think he’s a good cop. It’s horrifying how many are willing to just throw him in jail, and have it all be done. What kind of precedent does that set?!

I sell jack knives in my store. We have a display of knives locked in a case near the register. Almost everyday someone comments on this one knife. “That’s illegal. That’s a switchblade.”

“No it’s not a switchblade.”

“Well it look very sharp, and I don’t think it’s legal.”

It is legal. And why the f@&% do you feel the need to tell me what it is? No quotes as I never verbalize the words. This is just a case of $25 knives!

Too many opinions about how things should be, and who should be in jail, and how I should run my business.

I would never simply announce my opinions - outside of being with my family and close friends (I’m sure the brothers lurking will have a chuckle here!). Yet it seems 50% of the people I encounter simply can’t wait for justice to run it’s course, or simply bite their tongue about anything.

Can you tell it was a long day in retail? Grrrrrr.

I'd say we need prog propaganda control.

Agreed. Their libel protections are ridiculous.

“There are a lot of deaths in between. That doesn't keep the status quo from coming back, because in their hearts, that's what they want.“

What does that mean? Which status quo? Dictatorships and death, or individual liberty?

The purpose of The Constitution, and the genius of it, is that it allowed for the check of government for all of the citizens. Now we have progs who want to disregard The Constitution. They want to trash our successful way of life, which has brought more freedom and prosperity to individuals than probably any other form of government in history.

And your reaction to watching the progressives destroy it is, “Meh. A few million dead again due to avoidable mistakes is okay by me.”

France

The French Revolution is pretty famous. It started with a Louis and, depending on how you define things, ended with a Napoleon or another Louis.

I was not thinking of the revolution of 1848 -- which was a fizzle all over Europe. (and started with a French King and ended with a French Napoleon)

Spain

Are you really this dumb? Franco, dude...Remember. He died back in the Chevy Chase era of SNL.

What matters in my conversation with Iggy is where folks were and where they ended up. Not where they are in 2021. Spain evolved from 1976 to 2021, due to a smart incrementalist king.

"...not thinking of the revolution of 1848 -- which was a fizzle all over Europe."

I think that's an answer that'll earn you a correct score on the SAT-American History test, but that's history for high school kids, plus it leans left.

That started with the Paris Commune and ended with a long essay by Marx, sounding themes later developed by, among others, Lenin. And in its immediate wake, it fueled one of the first immigration booms (that's how we picked up all those families of socialist-leaning people who still tilt the political balance in states like Wisconsin and Minn.)

This silly argument echoes the one we hear today: a good riot in someplace like Minn. is necessary to advance the cause of Freedom (in fact, using the case of Detroit as an example, the 1966 riots destroyed the city's economic foundations and would have been catastrophic for the Black residents, but for the mountain of government antipoverty aid) ...

MJW

Judge Laurence Silberman recently urged the Supreme Court to overturn New York Times v. Sullivan (1964), the landmark decision that severely curtails the ability of public officials and (under later precedents) public figures to secure damages for lies about them.

As I've pointed out before when this has been discussed, if NYT v. Sullivan is overturned, many of the important cases cases will be decided by New Your City and D.C. juries, since that's where politicians and the media are concentrated. Will you like the results?

Hi, all--reporting from beautiful Austin, where I have been so busy with baby Everett that I haven't even been lurking--first time to have lost the thread in many, many years! But besides saying hello to one and all (including Porch), I write to complain that I thought Texas was open, but as far as I can tell, all businesses still require masks. I saw a portly fellow bicycling through Lady Bird Park, freely sweating, no one near, yet masked. If this is "open," when will we really have freedom? As far as I can tell from parents and sister, Tampa is about in the same state, and thus probably also much of Florida. I want to burn these horrible things, though that would probably release carcinogens. I always marveled at popular delusions like the tulip mania, the Darien expedition, and the Salem massacre, but I see that the age of "science" is equally credulous and baa-baa-ish. There are a lot of deaths in between. That doesn't keep the status quo from coming back, because in their hearts, that's what they want.--

Looks like my advice to you to read more history was more trenchant than I knew.
England - Start with a King. End with a Constitutional Monarchy in which parliament and the people have vastly expanded powers and the remnants of feudalism died.
France - Start with a King. End with an Emperor.
USA - Start with a King and a parliament running roughshod over the self governing rights of Englishmen. End up with the greatest nation and form of government in the history of the world.
Russia - Start with a Czar who was weak and a tyrant but a reform minded one. End with one of the two or three most monstrously brutal and totalitarian states in history.
Spain - who cares? No one, but it is worth noting that Franco is not generally considered a fascist except by Marxists.
Iran - start with an authoritarian Shah open to Western values and generally relatively tolerant. End with a totalitarian theocracy and kleptocracy.

Now, to any thinking person England and the USA are really the only two even worth considering in the context of your criticisms of my position.
In the other four you had authoritarian despots and monarchs who were certainly tyrants but of a long and relatively stable variety [except for the Shah].
Those four all turned out quite awful for a time because they were all revolutions involving totalitarian would be tyrants overthrowing a much more benign tyranny for the purpose of ruling absolutely and through sheer terror and brutality. To equate the before and after is to gloss over and to dishonor the many millions upon millions of victims of the various New Orders. It is worth noting that the ideological ancestors of the people assuming power here perpetrated the three most brutal regimes in history - the socialists, of both the national and international varieties.

In England and the USA where you had relatively mild despots opposed by people intent on self governance and lessening the reach and power of government you had perhaps the two greatest leaps forward in general political [and economic] freedom for more citizens than ever before. Your characterizations of these events is, to be charitable, idiotic and beneath even the new and unimproved Appalled.

Lastly, the revolt that will almost certainly be precipitated by Marx and Engels' children here will be one in which those of us who you find so revolting, will be doing so to reestablish what the revolting Founders originally established. While such events are awful and violent and usually pretty unpredictable, the odds are what results will be rather better than the corrupted, dishonorable betrayal of every glorious principle our Founding established. And the dispensation to hell of the Maoist principles slowly strangling the USA will be a Great Leap Forward, so to speak.

Yesterday hubs and I drove by a guy on his bike, by himself, wearing a huge helmet (not a normal biking helmet), and donning a paper mask. We both laughed out loud! Sadly, people are completely paranoid. I’m glad to know some states are mask-free, but not surprised to hear that some businesses require masks, etc. At least some citizens have choices!

MissMarple2

Catsneat!

I was just thinking of you. I am struggling to get through "Powder and Patch" by Georgette Heyer, which I had never read. Unlike most of her novels which are set in Regency England, this one is set in pre-Revolutionary France and to a lesser extent England.

I am totally out of patience with the manners of the French Court (Madame Pompadour, for example) and the descriptions of the clothing. Men with powdered faces and beauty marks, lace and brocades, etc.

If this is the book you started with, I can understand why you didn't much like her writing.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--I write to complain that I thought Texas was open, but as far as I can tell, all businesses still require masks.--

You guys need to come to beautiful communist California where the progs dare not step beyond their enclaves apparently.
Very few businesses require masks. All the restaurants are open.
Other than vulnerable people, almost no one worried about social distancing or shaking hands. People are free to wear, or if they're not stupid, to not wear a mask.

I think I understand progressives pretty well. I may get their motivations wrong now and again but I have studied their ideology and theology (ideo-theology?) and the underpinnings for such for several decades and I'm pretty clear on who they are politically and in real life.

But I do not see evidence they understand me and non-progressive's like me. They literally know nothing about me or how I live. I am a complete mystery. Everything they believe is a caricature, a sitcom or movie character they can easily understand.

And just as easily misunderstood. Jennifer Aniston wasn't Rachel. Chris Evans isn't any more Captain America any more than Robert Downey, Jr. is Iron Man (or Sherlock Holmes).
Maybe it is because they see us as beneath them, that we are not worthy of there time. Maybe it is that they simply are so cloistered and arrogant, they believe what they believe is the one true religion.

Many I speak to do not even know anything about the roots of their ideology and not many even seem to understand why they believe what they believe.

I've been thinking about why it seems the more "educated" a person is (and the left will always remark how the have the support of the smart set as a way to assert superiority and to denigrate those without degrees), the more likely they are to lean progressive. Given that most of academia is a comic book imitation of true intellectualism, I have deduced that progressivism depends on indoctrination.

Progressives, stripped of the protection offered by our contemporary society and culture, cannot survive because none of their ideas can survive life itself. For example, there is no way a man who believes he is a woman can succeed when procreation becomes a priority.

What good is Critical Race Theory, gender fluidity, Modern Monetary Theory or believing there is no objective reality or truth outside the protective force bubble of academia?
Conversely, conservativism does not need a safe space. Merely living a life, observing others and interacting with them teaches conservativism and the natural laws and principles upon which it is built. No degree is required.

Logically, that would seem to mean conservatism is a natural process and progressivism is not, it is unnatural.

Conservativism needs no fuel to exist, if progressivism does not get replenished, it dies.

Maybe that is why they see us as a threat.

BLM wouldn't be marching if its leaders thought that things were going their way. By "its leaders", I mean the ultra progressive left, people like Soros, Gates and Bezos. I suspect that the court case in Minneapolis is not going quite the way that they had hoped.

I agree with Stephanie's post above at 9:55 pm. We saw the same things happen in the late 1960's. A contingent of people, very small in comparison with the total population, makes a lot of noise and is pandered to by the media. In actuality, they have no real support and the MSM can't generate support for them anymore.

I'm guessing that even the CCP is running out of options and Iran would have been far better off doing a deal with President Trump. Xiden, Harris, Obama and Pelosi — how'd you like to take the field with that team? I'm putting my faith in the American people and I suspect that most of the rest of the sane world is too.

matt - deplore me if you must

The difference between Western Culture and what passes for bien pensant values is that Western Culture evolved over the course of 5,000 years going back to Ur and the Code of Hammurabi.

Philosophy (2,500 years) and monotheism (4,000+ years)grew and have been tested for for all of their existence against the harsh realities of life. The sciences were established through empirical and theoretical study of the facts.

There were a lot of wrong turns along the way but the Enlightenment was the slingshot into prosperity, human rights, the arts, and the freedom to be wildly wrong without destroying all about you.

However, today, even when faced with these harsh truths, fantasy and lies have become the mark of our educated class. They can split atoms and chase muons, but even in hard science the urge to extrapolate from very limited data sets promotes the wildest of fabulations.

I for one have a very hard time believing many of the attributes that archaeologists attribute to dinosaurs such as wild colors, feathers and higher levels of brain activity. Did velociraptors run faster than cheetahs? All of that oil sure is a shitpot of biomass. I want better explanations based upon better and more complete data. The fatal flaw of designing experiments to meet a preconceived outcome has never been more prevalent.

A lot of what passes for knowledge today seems to be pure conjecture. A lot of what passes for modern thought has proven empirically to be false. Communism does not work. Neither does Socialism. Capitalism does.Democracy does.

As the saying goes, the greatest trick Satan ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist. Today, his grasp is even greater.
