Oh, great, a tawdry sex scandal. What happened to Make Scandals Great Again?
Investigators believe Joel Greenberg, the former tax collector in Seminole County, Fla., who was indicted last year on a federal sex trafficking charge and other crimes, initially met the women through websites that connect people who go on dates in exchange for gifts, fine dining, travel and allowances, according to three people with knowledge of the encounters. Mr. Greenberg introduced the women to Mr. Gaetz, who also had sex with them, the people said.
...
Mr. Gaetz denied ever paying a woman for sex.
Some of the possible charges seem like a stretch:
It is not illegal to provide adults with free hotel stays, meals and other gifts, but if prosecutors think they can prove that the payments to the women were for sex, they could accuse Mr. Gaetz of trafficking the women under “force, fraud or coercion.” For example, prosecutors have filed trafficking charges against people suspected of providing drugs in exchange for sex because feeding another person’s drug habit could be seen as a form of coercion.
So offering gifts is fine but offering cash is coercive? OK, go with that.
The joker in the deck is this:
The Justice Department inquiry is also examining whether Mr. Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old girl and whether she received anything of material value, according to four people familiar with the investigation. The sex trafficking count against Mr. Greenberg involved the same girl, according to two people briefed on the investigation.
She's a minor, so Gaetz needs the Epstein Exception here.
I wonder what a Florida jury would make of all this. I have a suspicion that a decent portion of the Florida service economy relies on an equilibrium between fiscally appealing men and physically appealing women. Maybe I'm thinking of Vegas.
Like malley ran the initial bavk channels to the revolutionary guard high profile enoughthey dont need to be denied

Wow, in all the insane right wing comments here, two stand out. From Tom’s post, news reports TODAY, highlight the fact the Matt Gaetz used the Cash App and Apple Pay to send money to the [multiple] ladies he and his buddy were paying for sex.
Secondly, although it would funny for sbwaters to explain what HE likes from the Georgia bill, MLB Commissioner could try to patiently explain the thing he does not like was the players not playing the All-Star game, because GA’s gerrymandered GOP legislature is trying to steal the next election by usurping county election boards, taking away early voting, and keeping Democrats from voting. The MLB Commissioner cares as much about Democrats voting in Georgia as much you do, sbwaters, i.e., not at all. He cares about TV contracts.

--Wow, in all the insane right wing comments here, two stand out. --
How is;
"From Tom’s post, news reports TODAY, highlight the fact the Matt Gaetz used the Cash App and Apple Pay to send money to the [multiple] ladies he and his buddy were paying for sex."?
...an insane right wing comment?
Not a promising start, Tim.
--...GA’s gerrymandered GOP legislature is trying to steal the next election by usurping county election boards...--
The Constitution explicitly gives State legislatures the power to set and regulate elections so it is impossible for them to "usurp" an inferior legal or administrative body.
...taking away early voting...
Unfortunately it does not take away pernicious early voting but codifies it via statute.
--...keeping Democrats from voting...--
It only keeps Democrats from voting illegally. I have faith in your fellow Dems that they can in fact get an ID card and sign their own name. Personally I don't think anyone of any party who can't shouldn't be voting anyway. Are Democrats stupider than Reps? That seems to be the reasonable conclusion Dem concerns over these modest reforms elicits. I believe even a Dem can manage to supply an ID since they do so for so many other things in their lives already.

Hey, attorneys--I've been wondering if the judge may have denied Chauvin's motion for change of venue (if ever one should have been granted to somewhere where the jury wouldn't rationally be in fear for their lives were they to find him not guilty!)
in order to allow an appeals court to automatically grant him a retrial when he's found guilty to appease the mob.

As I said elsewhere yesterday, I've not been following the theater in Minneapolis very closely, as there is not a bit of doubt in my mind that Floyd killed himself with an OD of fentanyl, a massive amount of which HE stuck up his butt, not officer Chauvin.
No damage to his tracheal structures, no signs of asphyxiation, and there are four arteries that supply brain blood flow, not just the one carotid that may have been under Chauvin's knee--as he used a recommended method of restraint to keep Floyd, himself, and his fellow officers safe.
The medical examiner calling this a homicide is a massive stretch IMHO.
Charging Chauvin with murder is an atrocity.
The bits that filtered through to me so far about the judge make him seem like a sensible guy, other than his failure to move the trial.
I may have to read some Powerline or Legal Insurrection to see if my take on judge is off.

a'mom--
https://medium.com/the-true-crime-edition/the-murders-of-the-alday-family-28a852cca405 is the seminal change of venue case as far as I know. It was still being argued when I was in law school and my crim law prof was the lead counsel. Basically there were people on the jury who had known the deceased and the small town wanted to try the case there because it was seen as just retribution for the horrors involved.
Even though there was no real dispute as to guilt the courts eventually forced a retrial elsewhere.
Chauvin's case has a quite good dispute as to legal guilt, unlike the alday murders, but it is still clear that the floyd 'murder' narrative also has a geographical right to vengeance component. That is precisely what the alday case said couldn't be the reason not to move a notorious case.
The fact that a jury member could legitimately fear for their life or property if a verdict fails to fit the existing narrative strikes me as an additional reason for a change in venue, not a freestanding issue alone.

Regarding Chauvin's knee on Floyd's neck, well, I gotta agree with this detective, Zimmerman.
I've restrained a lot of violent cons and have never been trained to or used a knee once the con was cuffed. I still maintain there was no need for the knee after he was cuffed.
And I also agree that they should have either stood him up or rolled him onto his side to help him breathe.

--And I also agree that they should have either stood him up or rolled him onto his side to help him breathe.--
Anonomom can correct me but the problem was not that some external force was causing his sensation of being unable to breathe. Internally he was going into cardiopulmonary arrest. They could have stood him up and had him jump on one leg and he still would have eventually ended up back on the ground as his heart gave out from the OD and he died.
--I think Chauvin's an idiot!--
Possibly, but he's not on trial for being an idiot. He's on trial for ending Floyd's life which it seems highly unlikely he contributed to.
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | April 03, 2021 at 10:47 AM
Seems to me the defense can end this trial with one question of the medical examiner;
Given Floyd's "severe" [the coroner's own word] preexisting cardiac disease and the amount of drugs in his system, isn't it likely that Floyd would have died whether Chauvin was even on the scene or not?

Interesting thing I've been thinking about [to me anyway].
Our ostensibly liberal and definitely idiotic pals used to talk about the "convergence" of Western liberal democracies and the Soviet style state. That of course was complete balderdash and reached its peak shortly before the Soviet Union imploded, with Reagan's, Thatcher's and John Paul's helping hands, all over their dumbass theories. The Soviets evolved essentially not at all in the direction of freedom.
But with the left in the West gaining complete institutional control and Deng's perceptive revelation that a semblance of economic freedom could be granted without losing totalitarian control, we are now seeing a form of convergence.
The mutant hybrid these creeps have come up with is in the East a reaction to the utter failures of Marxism to produce the means to dominate the world and in the West a reaction to the unfettered free market's successes in thwarting Marxism.
And so the two camps have fallen back on this globalist trope which is slowly resolving to be nothing more than Mussolini's fascism with a thin veneer of internationalism applied to assuage the international socialists and other imbecilic utopians. What it really amounts to is a less comical and less benign version of the planet the Star Trek crew happened upon in which all of society was modeled after Chicago mafia gangs of the 20s.
Instead of oligarchs and a ruling class you had bosses, but just like our would be rulers they all just wanted a piece of the action.

If the purpose of public schools was to produce functional, self-reliant, capable adults who can support themselves and can manage their own lives, yea, it’s been a massive failure.
But it seems clear that hasn’t been the purpose for decades. And if, as it appears, the actual purpose of public schools is to produce an ignorant, innumerate, emotion-driven, easily manipulated and dependent populace, it’s been wildly successful.
