No. The democratsbwill flog this dead horse until they find another issue.

However, I am pleased the GOP blocked. If they hadn’t, the dems would have compiled thousands of hours of testimony which would have been selectively edited for commercials. Also they would have wasted millions of taxpayer dollars.

The GOP is learning to fight back. I hope it continues.

As if the 9/11 commission, or Mueller Special Prosecutor office found anything. It’s all theater for the saps that read NYT.

James D.

What's to go away, TM?

It wasn't an insurrection. It wasn't "comparable to 9/11". It wasn't an assault on our democracy.

Grow the hell up, read something other than the NYT, listen to someone other than your dimwitted neighbors who keep voting lying criminals like Dick Blumenthal into office, and see things for how they truly are.

Yeah, I want those truth tellers Schiff and Raskin setting the narrative. Anything else is not who we are. Right?

Dave (in MA)

There, there, TM.

I'm sure Pelosi and her fellow nutjobs will keep things going on their own.

Hey, you've still got the NY AG case against Trump to dream about.

I remember the outrage when Trump even suggested prosecuting Hillary. "Banana republic!" But now that the shoe is on the other foot...

--Sure, blocking the 1/6 Commission will make the whole thing go away.--

It will make another commie kangaroo court and three ring prog circus go away. And since the whole purpose of this commission was to never let it go away but to create unending propaganda for Pelosi and company, spare us the sarcasm.

Here's an idea for a real commission for a real scandal; a panel to study why people who do not agree with the ruling party and charged with misdemeanors are being held without bail in solitary confinement for months on end while people who are sympathetic to the ruling party and are charged with both misdemeanors and felonies are walking the streets and having their charges dismissed en masse.
Doesn't destroying the rule of law through indefinite incarceration for non violent minor crimes and having people prosecuted, or not, depending on their political affiliation constitute a threat to self governance and "democracy" a bit more serious than some guy putting his feet up on a desk?

--An angry mob attacked our Capitol, our lawmakers, and our election.--

If it turns out vote fraud is established sufficiently to have stolen the election [and that only requires 40,000 votes in three states] to any reasonable person's satisfaction then the election, the capitol and the lawmakers all deserved to be attacked by an angry mob, and those lawmakers ought to be the ones sitting in jail without bail.

I thought I might come back and have a look at what's going on at JOM again. Oops!

I am LOL at this movie. It’s free on Netflix if you are looking for a couple of hours diversion.

So whose concerned about violence and terror

In my novella there is a character freed from gitmo who delivers a device to london.

A short while ago, in a "debate" on NewsMax between some democrat consultant and former GOP congressman Peter King, the Democrat claimed -- with no push-back from King or the news guy -- than a number of police men and women had lost their lives defending the Capitol from the insurrectionists. (The scare quotes are because King stupidly agreed with the need for the commission and claimed it was the worst attack on DC since 1812, so there was no real debate.)

... that a number of ...

See, MJW, I knew I was better off watching “Legally Blonde”! Put me in a much better mood than watching Peter King!

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

The worst attack on DC occurs every other January and every time a congressional recess is over and the little brats and snots come back in off the playground.

Toasty high of 44 here today.

We can use the rain, but today is Carb Day at the Track so I hope everybody got the cars tested earlier before the front moved in. Race weekend is a big deal here.

Tom, if mocking things made people go away, then........?? Are you there Tom???

Good afternoon! It has been so cold here today! We decided to put flowers in the planters and tonight frost is expected! So now we have to go out and cover the plants.
Anyway, as a caller to Howie Carr just said, I'd like to wish the Massachusetts JOMers a "Happy Maskless Eve." :)

Something worse than Peter King:

Heck, we should do a re-aligning of all state borders once every census period. Let the people in every county in the country have a say in what kind of government they want to represent them. Then if the state they want to join agrees to take them, go for it. Then adjust congressional representation appropriately.

This is a win-win, red and blue. The enlightened progressive counties all despise the stupid redneck flyover morons who live outside their sainted city walls, and this way us knuckle dragging, gun and bible clingers wouldn't be holding them back anymore from achieving their progressive utopias.

They say they hate us, they should be glad to see us go.

Greater Idaho would be a start, but you'd also see a realignment of pretty much every state. Most of Illinois has a lot more in common with Indiana than it does with Chicago. And upstate New York on its own would be one of the most republican states in America, except its attached to New York City. How much of Colorado do you think likes being ruled by Denver? And California is going to get really skinny, really fast.

This would be a whole lot easier to divide up than creating whole new states. For all the people freaking out about Washington DC not being represented, congratulations
you are now part of Virginia. Luckily for them the rest of Virginia just joined West Virginia, but you guys and NoVa can have a great time electing all the black face wearing gun control freaks you want. Leave DC as like the 10 blocks around the Capitol because it was never meant to be a state and call it good.

(ironically, democrats are only all about adding new states as long as those states would reliably provide more democrat senators. When asked about things like part of California breaking off to become a purple state called Jefferson which could conceivably send one or two republican senators to DC and that's suddenly super evil bad and probably racist somehow too)

Problem solved. Cap it at 50 states but then let people choose which state government they want to represent them. Hell, Austin can vote to join California if they want. We've already established that parts of the same state don't actually have to touch, looking at you Upper Peninsula.

Or if they really wanted to add Puerto Rico, sure, but give a little quid pro quo and add New-New York at the same time to keep things square... Oh no. Can't do that. It's only a moral imperative to change things if it means democrats can win more stuff.

And of course all of that is why the left will never ever let this happen. They like having every state be dominated by one densely populated blue urban area which can be trusted to reliably produce however many votes are needed. Letting half of America live under a government that doesn't actively despise them is inconceivable.

Brood of vipers also works. :)

matt - deplore me if you must

The "experts" were Chinese apologists whose hatred for Trump colored every single story they generated, combined with a massive CCP propaganda campaign. Bat soup? Highly doubtful. A wet market 200 yards from the Wuhan Institute of Virology? Several employees with a Covid like illness & symptoms in Wuhan hospitals in November of 2019? Chinese hospital safety protocols for a completely unknown disease? Nonexistent.

Records destruction, stonewalling, refusing independent access to data? A massive global propaganda campaign to blame others?

I am wracking my brain as to last time the Federales ever filled the constution?

Hubby is happy because a group of paddlers are staying at the campsite on our third lot tomorrow. These people are hard core. They will paddle almost 30 miles down the Penobscot River to our property. Not only is it cold, it is dry, so they won't be able to have a campfire. On Sunday they will portage a couple of dams and then reach Old Town.

I suspect Fast Chuckie is happy with the outcome. He gets to blame the insurrectionist fascist racist oppressivist GOPers in the Senate for blocking a probe, while not needing to deal with the possibility that a commission might actually look into why there was light security around the Capitol when Trump offered lots of help.

Hey you guys be nice! Someday soon TM will save us all. When they shut down all conservative sites, he will still be up and running. So hold your criticism!

I'm happy with TM, Jane. Before I go to a social function (or have a Zoom call) with Acela Corridor people with a TM view of things, I read TM on Trump as a vaccination against ripping into people at the event. TM raises my immunity against AcelaCorridorThink.

My folks had one. A convertible. Upgraded it to a 1955 Studebaker Commander, robins egg blue. Not sure we had it very long. Got rear ended. No injuries but I don't remember the car being around very long after that.

Got a '57 Merc' after that. Nowadays Merc' means Mercedes, but back then we were talking about a real car.

Strange days indeed

Might be a '58 model

Some years ago, the Lord came unto Noah, who was now living in the United States, and said, "Once again the earth has become wicked and overpopulated, and I see the end of all flesh before me. Build another Ark and save 2 of every living thing along with a few good humans, thy sons and their wives." He gave Noah the blueprints, saying, "You have 6 months to build the Ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights."

Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard — but no Ark.

"Noah!" He roared, "I'm about to start the rain! Where is the Ark?"

"Forgive me, Lord," begged Noah, "but things have changed.

"I needed a building permit. I've been arguing with the inspector about the need for a sprinkler system.

My neighbors claim that I've violated the neighborhood zoning laws by building the Ark in my yard and exceeding the height limitations. We had to go to the Development Appeal Board for a decision.

"Then the Department of Transportation demanded a bond be posted for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions, to clear the passage for the Ark's move to the sea. I told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they would hear nothing of it.

"Getting the wood was another problem. There's a ban on cutting local trees in order to save the spotted owl. I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls — but no go!

"When I started gathering the animals, I got sued by an animal rights group. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodation was too restrictive, and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space. I am required to apply for 834 different licenses to keep wild beasts on private property.

"Then the EPA ruled that I couldn't build the Ark until they'd conducted an environmental impact study on Your proposed flood.

Further, the pitch to water-proof the ark has been banned by the EPA as inimical to the environment.

"I'm still trying to resolve a complaint with the Human Rights Commission on how many minorities I'm supposed to hire for my building crew. "Immigration and Naturalization is checking the green-card status of most of the people who want to work.

The scaffolding to build the superstructure is not OSHA-approved and is forbidden to use except for private structures less than 5 cubits.

"The trades unions say I can't use my sons. They insist I have to hire only Union workers with Ark-building experience.

"To make matters worse, the IRS seized all my assets, claiming I'm trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species.

"So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 100 years for me to finish this Ark."
Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow stretched across the sky.

Noah looked up in wonder and asked, "Does this sign mean you're not going to destroy the world, oh Lord?"

"No," said the Lord. "The government beat me to it."

[I believe Ronald Reagan told this story.]

Michael Smith
The Torture of Winston Smith.

Tucker Carlson is devoting his entire show tonight on the “war on science”, focusing on how our scientific community is divorcing itself from facts and data and attaching itself to fads, social pressure, and ideology.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot – because you need to understand a problem factually before you can even begin to solve it – and when I think about how creative people are in constructing elaborate ruses to support what they want to believe (actually they aren’t “supporting” anything, they are pasting over their wrongness with a tissue paper thin layer of veneer), it occurs to me that these people must have some degree of intellect and creativity to create those ruses.

I do not want to be right about this because, if I am, it leads to a damning endpoint.
People who build their camouflaged duck blinds to hide from reality are smart enough to know they are wrong and simply choose to deny what their own intellect is telling them. That proposition leads to one irrevocable conclusion, those people are evil.

That is a hard thing to say about our fellow Americans. At least it is for a thinking person who wants to believe the best about people but even the reaction to people like me and others who refuse to start with ideology and work backwards to define reality. This willingness to justify anything and everything, even the most irrational, more or less proves the evil thesis because those folks have absolutely no compunction about calling us evil.

There is no denying the ideology they are protecting is collectivist in nature. It runs the gamut from socialism to communism, but that seems a distinction without a difference.

I have always classified science by dividing the population of science into two categories: reactive sciences seek to explain events and proactive science, taking what is learned from the reactive sciences and building something new. An oversimplification to be sure, but for the general purposes of discussion, these seem adequate.

It is not just “science” under fire, it is the very basis for science, the same basis upon which our republic was founded – the truth of natural law. Everything about science is an attempt to theorize about and explain the characteristics of nature.

I recall what F.A. Hayek wrote about the real victim of collective systems:

“A further point should be made here: Collectivism means the end of truth. To make a totalitarian system function efficiently, it is not enough that everybody should be forced to work for the ends selected by those in control; it is essential that the people should come to regard these ends as their own. This is brought about by propaganda and by complete control of all sources of information.

The most effective way of making people accept the validity of the values they are to serve is to persuade them that they are really the same as those they have always held, but which were not properly understood or recognized before. And the most efficient technique to this end is to use the old words but change their meaning. Few traits of totalitarian regimes are at the same time so confusing to the superficial observer and yet so characteristic of the whole intellectual climate as this complete perversion of language.”

Thinking people can see Hayek’s prescription at work in the defenses of the COVID-19 failures and those “scientists” and “doctors” who promulgated and promoted the lies of the past year and a half. When you carefully consider why careers, incomes and reputations were destroyed by the media, by academicians, by Democrat officials and operatives, and their allies in the various tribes of the Woke, Hayek’s truth is unquestionably confirmed.

Why would people do this? Why would they abandon self-evident truth for self-evident falsehood? For what purpose would they promote untruth over truth, claiming that 2+2=5 and torturing anyone who refused to BELIEVE?

It seems clear, for whatever the reason or motivation, they were defending something they wanted and desired to be true and did so at the cost of the lives (and livelihoods) of others.

It was not good enough to simply mouth the words, you must BELIEVE that 2+2=5.

In Orwell’s 1984, O’Brien tortures Winston to convince him to believe that truth is subjective: it is whatever the Party tells him it is. At first Winston says what O’Brien wants him to say, but O’Brien tells him saying the words are not enough, the torture will continue until Winston BELIEVES it.

In the beginning, it is sheer brutal physical torture, incessant blows all over, that reduces Winston to a cowering animal that will confess to anything and everything, implicating everybody if only the pain would stop.

But in the end, it was not that physical torture that made Winston believe in the ideology. It was the breaking of his spirit, values and principles that drove him to the point of acceptance. He was made to betray and sacrifice Julia, whom he loved, for his own sake. By breaking Winston’s core values, no refuge remained for him other than the acceptance of the party's ideology in place of his own.

If you have deduced, as I have, that the left is not stupid and it is not about them believing in unreality, it is about them holding out long enough to break our spirit, crush our values and smash our principles in the same manner O’Brien broke Winston.

And in that, we find both the reason and the motivation - and the concomitant evil - of the contemporary American left.

Over the past 18 months or so, Americans have lived through “1984”, “Animal Farm”, “The Road to Serfdom” and “Atlas Shrugged”.

It is not like we were not warned.
