Re Midsomer Murders, I've read a lot of Caroline Graham, but it's a shame that the villain is usually a rich developer! The first one of Midsomer Murders, which I just watched for the first times few days ago, at least had an incestuous brother/sister pair for the villains.

That reading by Suchet was wonderful--what a great pilgrimage for him to give readings of the Bible--thanks, Pin.

MM, since history is full of fascination, I think the reason it isn't being taught is that the teachers themselves don't know much of it. Why tread on shifty ice?

Jack, are you seeing what is going on at OLD TRAFFORD. Is THE BRON doing anything. Is he coming to rescue his team??? Will he call the RAYYYYYYYYYCISSSS POLICE??

MissMarple2

Catsmeat,

The latest one I watched had fanatical preservationists who wanted to STOP development.

Personally, I wish Indianapolis had revamped the Marion County Courthouse rather than tearing it down and erecting the City-County Building, which resembles the UN building. The federal courthouse was torn down in the 70's and replaced with a hideous concrete structure which resembles the FBI building in DC.

We live in an area defined as "Gateway South." Across the split between 431 and 31 they have erected a huge arch metal sign which my sister says might as well say "Arbeit macht frei." It certainly resembles in style the sign over Auschwitz's entrance.

It's hideous, and I personally think that it was yet another subtle slam at our side of town, which seems to get more than it's fair share of used car lots, small factories, and rental storage facilities. The zoning seems to be controlled by people who don't live here. Plus I am sure it cost a lot of money.

Did anyone see the tree planting ceremony at the white House a couple of days ago? I can't find the video that I originally watched, but to me it did not look like a live shot of the White House. In fact the background of the city looked like something you'd project on a blue screen.

--They seem stunned that they didn't know the true figures. Whose fault is that? Public education, deliberately ignoring some facts in order to fill time with efforts to nurse grudges between groups.--

It's the fault of a society which has farmed the education of its children out to the tragedy of the commons.
Public education can be counted on to provide a product precisely as valuable and beneficial as the IRS and the DMV.
What did we think was going to happen?

--To be sure, a lot of "thees" and "thys" and "spakeths" don't trip easily off the modern tongue nevertheless they are part of a beautifully written document that has sustained us for generations down the years. IMO they shouldn't make such alterations. Imagine doing the same thing to Shakespeare, poetry, and the Declaration of Independence just because the language is centuries old?--

Yes but, the OT and NT are translations from at least two different languages and from languages that varied over time and place. So the OKJV, while a "word for word" translation, is "accurate", many, many judgments and compromises in translation occurred. I agree it is incomparably poetic and beautiful but I do use primarily the NKJV precisely because some of those anachronisms do make it harder to understand.
And I find myself increasingly consulting the NIV or even the NLT if a construction isn't clear.
Poetry is nice, and there are IMO no human words which surpass Matthew 6 or 1 Corinthians 13 in beauty in the OKJV, but understanding what God is conveying should be more important than how lovely we can interpret it, no?

I'm not sure 'sloppy' is the word I would use for the FBI's work however.
They're doing things 'by the book', the book now being written by Lavrentiy Beria.
Smear, cause doubt about and isolate the target. If one should be so fortunate as to actually detect a crime so much the better. Fortunately we are still at the phase where simply fabricating a crime is still relatively rare but that is changing and will continue.
The trip from legitimate prosecution to harassment to persecution is historically a very short one for burgeoning authoritarian states.

MissMarple2

Ignatz,

I am a product of public education, all the way through getting my BA in a state university. I dare say quite a few people here are as well. My mother, sister, and two grandparents were public school teachers, their careers spanning the years from the mid 1930’s to the 1990’s. (My sister finished her teaching years at a Catholic school.)

It’s not that people have abandoned their responsibilities as much as that public education has changed dramatically over the last 30 years. I began my school days with the Lord’s Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Our music book had hymns as well as secular songs. My entire grade school was taken downtown to the Circle Theater to see “Ben Hur” because the author of the book came from Indiana, with never a thought it was an unusual movie for children.

My mother taught English and I still run into people who remember her as one of their favorites because she taught them to appreciate poetry. My grandfather was a government teacher and assistant football coach who sponsored the Sportsman’s Club, where the guys brought rifles and shotguns to school and went hunting after school. Can anyone envision that now?

The prayers and hymns went away with the prohibition of religious stuff in schools, and the institution of teachers unions made everything more regimented and boring. Gradually the Left infiltrated the universities and then sent indoctrinated graduates into the public school system.

So, here we are, 50 years later, and while public education is faltering, I think you should think about children who cannot attend private schools or home school. The alternative is 18th century Europe and Britain, where the aristocracy and very wealthy merchants hired tutors or sent their sons to boarding schools and then Oxford or the Sorbonne, while the vast underclass never even learned to read.

clarice

THANKS, IGGY. I left this is an unsolved mystery in the belief that this time the targets are well-armed and we will continue to learn more about this story. For example, why did the corporate media so quickly acknowledge error? My guess is their source(s) were peddling fifth hand lies and when the targets fought back hard, the reporters touched base with their course(s) who backpeddled furiously, leaving Nakashima, et al naked.

When a society is healthy it can provide a decent public education, though I would argue there is zero reason it should be able to supply a superior one. The examples of homeschoolers and private Christian educated kids outperforming their public educated peers suggest it can't, as does the fact that even government-loving, progs-of-means don't trust the government with their kids' education.
When a society is not healthy most people cannot afford an alternative to the public schools which become prog indoctrination centers.
The question is not is public education unremittingly awful everywhere at all times. The questions are, what is the best system and how did public education become the default?
Private education featuring competition and choice seems to me to be the best system per se. If individual states and localities wish to sponsor poor and middle class kids through vouchers they are perfectly free to do so.
How is public education superior or even remotely equal to that in any conceivable way?
If one is concerned about irresponsible parents one can still make education mandatory without making it public.
If one is concerned about oddball schools, what is odder than CRT and what business is it of the state what out our neighbors believe or teach their kids anyway?

Iggy,

My point is that the public schools, instituted to provide a way for children who couldn’t get access to private or parochial schools, has changed dramatically since its inception.

What is your alternative? I say that awareness of what is being taught and a revamped curriculum based on skills, basic language and math knowledge, and a dose of history and geography would go a long way. Right and wrong need to be taught as well.

Narciso

I think ignatz point is there arent good solutions as with many things the public schools in many areas are loaded with bad curriculum ignorant teachers almost non existent disciplinary protocols and mostly urban students though not exclusively inundated with the worst racist misogynist trash through their shells.

Davod "Think how much education children could get if schools cut out all the crap."

Then that would mean starting from scratch with all new teachers who have real degrees in real things.

GUS

OL, most PUBLIC SCHOOLS in urban America, have teachers with severe chips on their shoulders, and little brain power. No critical thinking skills, and no interest in anything but PAY and BENNIES.
The term "credentialed" is apt. Teachers of affirmative action, or merely an "EDUCATION" DEGREE.
SLOPPY JILL BIDEN, is a perfect example. Meaningless degrees handed out to good drones.

Barbara

And I find myself increasingly consulting the NIV or even the NLT if a construction isn't clear.

Poetry is nice, and there are IMO no human words which surpass Matthew 6 or 1 Corinthians 13 in beauty in the OKJV, but understanding what God is conveying should be more important than how lovely we can interpret it, no?

Yes and no. Perhaps because I was raised with the old document, its meaning and beauty have such importance to me that the NV sounds trite and/or simplistic. While I do realize that the New Testament was mostly written in Greek, translated into other languages in order to spread the Gospel, and then translated in the Vulgate into Latin, those facts do not lessen my appreciation of the King James version.

Most Bibles I've seen are replete with footnotes in order to allow the reader to understand and contemplate the text. In contrast, the new versions go beyond mere translation of the text into modern English to reinterpret the meaning altogether. I cringe to think of what they'll come up with next. YMMV.

matt - deplore me if you must

WSJ had an interesting opt/ed today on the same subject; how the marxists have taken over college level education.

It seems that every day lately we see either a school board, administration, or university faculty member/admin getting caught in their own propaganda. That and mid-30's female teachers gone wild.

There are no rules anymore. There is no underlying moral code. math is anything you want it to be and it spirals downwards into CRT, revisionism, and pure bullshit.

yesterday they dedicated a new Norbertine Abbey a few miles away. They have a prep school as well. very old school, like my own education.

Your electives are language and advanced calculus or physics, take your pick.

They also have a seminary with 40 seminarians. I love the Norbertines; conservative and very intellectual. They even do the Latin Mass.

The public education system needs to be firehosed, as do our universities. That's the only way to remove the horse manure that has been building up for 40 years.Augean stable level horse manure, I might add.

The movement to destroy the AP high schools is a disgrace, but this is today's Luddite/Bolshevik reality. Creating mindless serfs.

The US also conducts counter-terrorist operations using intelligence agencies, special operations forces and air assets, the very approach Biden unsuccessfully argued for when vice president, as he opposed the more extensive counter-insurgency campaign that Obama prosecuted while in office..."

MM-

Last year during Lockdown but after malls had reopened I had to go to one of the high end ones for some reason and the only store with a line was the gucci one. It was over an hour to get into store and the line members did not look like any consumers I had seen previously at that mall. It really did look like everyone wanted to spend their stimulus check or oversized unemployment on buying something gucci.

It might not even be fake. It's simply a priority for some people to be seen with certain brands. Red had a co-worker who just had to use her signing bonus to get a real LV bag. Less than 3 months later she and her hubby were both unemployed with two young kids.

Marlene

Good afternoon! We've been packing stuff since the crack of dawn. Maine, where America's day starts. :)
I've just caught up and been thinking about all the comments re: education. In 5th grade, I had what would be be considered a spinster school teacher. She wore tweed skirts and cardigans and beautiful brooches pinned on the cardigans. When it was time to teach us about manifest destiny and the pioneers, she had us build a model. Barbies dressed in calico and Kens in buckskin in Conestoga wagons. I remember that because I asked my mother to sew a calico dress and sunbonnet for my Barbie. :)
A teacher in the mid-1960s was still allowed to teach manifest destiny and let her students
celebrate the history of our country.

GUS

I thought it was Kamala not Makala.
But I'm just a WHITE SUPREMACIST.

JohnH

But, hopefully you have a remote temp sensor so you can stay out of the rain. Mine has two probes so I can monitor ambient temp/meat or upper/lower ambient (vertical smoker).

GUS

BTW, It reached 90 degrees at my palatial estate on the Bark River.

sbwaters

Marlene, they should teach Manifest Destiny. It is a belief like many others passed off today as "troof!"

Yet another reason to be humble about what you are told to believe, and yet another reason children should learn to put ideas on paper where they are easier to check.

Ran across an old note of mine: "Newspapers give people time to think. They give people time to examine particulars."

GUS

Hello John H!! Apparently you got your MEAT RATION coupons from the GUBMINT. 4LBS per year. And no milk for you!!!!

GUS

Sbw. That used to be true. Reading and comprehending concepts, details, facts and truths.
Now, it's all the same. The FULL COMMIE LEFTIST APPROVED thought. To read today's SLOP does not need or require critical thinking skills. Skepticism is important, but when one IDEOLOGICAL VIEWPOINT, is sold as FACT. When the FULL COMMIES are the FACT CHECKERS. Why bother.
Little Jimmy Acosta called FOX NEWS, A "BULLSHIT FACTORY". He knows nothing different.
He eats the SOYLENT GREEN, because there is nothing else. Mmm Mmmm good.

Jane

Marlene,

Hope it’s going well. Where are you putting all the packed stuff?

bubarooni

Hey JohnH!

I do have such a temp monitor. Not only does it allow me to stay outta the rain, it has enough range to allow me to sit in the garag while I watch tv and drink beer.

I think I'm going to like this whole smoking meat thing this summer.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--Iggy,

My point is that the public schools, instituted to provide a way for children who couldn’t get access to private or parochial schools, has changed dramatically since its inception.

What is your alternative?--

I'm not sure how much plainer I can make it, but I'll try.
There should be no public schools at any level.
There is self evidently no constitutional role for the Feds in anything to do with education.
Each individual state and or private institutions can and should provide school vouchers and aid to those unable to pay for school for their kids.
That way every parent can provide an outside education for their, kids if they choose not to homeschool, and each parent can pick and choose between the competing schools. Unlike public schools, the bad ones that do not provide an education will fail and disappear, not get huge chunks of government money to continue failing.
That seems like the least imperfect method of education and the one most resistant to the government and other busybodies kidnapping and indoctrinating our kids.

Marlene

Jane, we will probably need a U-Haul trailer when we go back to Florida. The daughter and son-in-law will probably come up to get her stuff. It all depends on how soon we sell the property.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--Therm we sat down for a chat. Today she wanted to know why Gucci was so expensive and if there was racism when I went to school.--

What a huge opportunity to help shape a young girl's life. She obviously recognizes that you understand and explain things she won't hear elsewhere.
In fifty years she'll probably be telling her grandkids about this wise old white woman who used to live on her block when she was a kid and taught her about how the world works. :)

GUS

I've followed Lovely Miss M's tales and stories of the young girls who she has befriended. It is very touching and positive. 7th and 8th grade is quite a time of transition for young people, soon to be challenged by real world issues. What these young ladies think RACISM is today in probably not honest and most likely propaganda and media bias. How could a black kid grow up in Public schools and not be bombarded with NONSENSE about racism. Miss M, you are a perfect example of the OPPOSITE of what the "STATE/GOVERNMENT" schools tell them.

GUS

Yes Ig, and despite her own situation, this WHITE WOMAN, paid these young women for odd jobs, and befriended them.

MissMarple2

Ignatz,

What about the kids in poor schools that you don’t learn ARE bad until a couple of years have passed? Sure, you can pull your kids out and put them in a different school with vouchers, but by then they are 2 years behind and will never catch up.

We are talking about kids and I would rather clean the commies out of schools and improve curriculum and teaching.

What are you going to do about transportation to school? What about sports teams and proms? I just will not consign kids to charlatans or parents who are using the vouchers for criminal schemes.

Plus I want to have ways to clean out universities, too.

Marlene

Jane, everything is in the garage. I have one more box to pack in the main cabin. I'm going to Bangor tomorrow with stuff for Goodwill and the Humane Society.

MissMarple2

GUS,

Thanks so much for your kind words! Sometimes one feels like there is nothing much you can do, but every little bit helps.

GUS

Miss M, I have known you for a long long time, and you are a very kind, loving, warm and caring lady.
Daddy thought the world of you.
The solutions to AMERICA'S EDUCATION PROBLEMS, should be LOCAL. My wife taught in Milwaukee public schools for over a decade all thru the 90's.
It's gotten much much worse. School is wear children spend their day for 9 plus months a year.
It's where they get breakfast and lunch.
It is where they DO NOT LEARN TO THINK, but it is where THE COMMIES take them hostage to ridiculous misinformation. To correct this is MONUMENTAL.
GEPPETTO BIDEN only bought in, because otherwise he'd be in a old folks home eating oat meal.
His HANDLERS are SUGGESTING a 42% increase in PUBLIC SCHOOLS SPENDING. As Ig has said numerous times, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT has NO RESPONSIBILITY for the SCHOOL SYSTEMS. MOAR MONEY TO DRUNKEN SAILORS would have a less damaging effect. THESE ARE CHILDREN.

jimmyk

Each individual state and or private institutions can and should provide school vouchers and aid to those unable to pay for school for their kids.

I basically agree, but one has to confront the argument that if tax money is going to be used to pay for schooling, then the taxpayers are going to want a say in the curriculum. Ideally that shouldn't be a big deal, as the mandates or restrictions should be pretty minimal and non-controversial. But inevitably it will be the camel's nose under the tent. That doesn't negate your point, as no system is perfect, but it would end up being an thorny issue because of all the Karens who need to stick their noses into everything.

MissMarple2

Noted from Midsomer:

Old Lurker

Jimmy "but one has to confront the argument that if tax money is going to be used to pay for schooling, then the taxpayers are going to want a say in the curriculum. Ideally that shouldn't be a big deal"

"Tax payers want a say" What a quaint out of date notion. Judging by how many decades it has been since the taxpayers have had any input in schools already or even any sway over their own school boards, I would not assume "taxpayers" are going to get much in the future. Then of course, the next problem is that right now, the people who pay the taxes probably are not the people with kids in the schools anyway. Yes, I know, income taxes are different from real estate taxes and so on, but most of the money raised in taxes to pay for most public schools are, my guess, not paid by the families with kids in the schools. Finally, our country is divided right now between parents who give a damn about what their kids learn, those who like it just fine the way it is, and all the others who just don't know-don't care either way.

Bottom line is that only functioning parents will get involved and everybody else will just leave it to the state...hence where we are right now.

I vote for Iggy's solution and let the losers lose. Darwin will take care of them in the new Dark Age.

Jane

Marlene, I have a friend here from Maine, in the inner lakes region, who had 3 offers on her house the day it went on the market (she was still here) and one for over the asking price. I suspect you’ll be here soon.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--Ignatz,

What about the kids in poor schools that you don’t learn ARE bad until a couple of years have passed? Sure, you can pull your kids out and put them in a different school with vouchers, but by then they are 2 years behind and will never catch up.--

Well, right now the kids just stay in those failed schools and they then also fail because they have no other choice than the government monopoly..
And they have been like that for decades. It is the worst of all possible worlds.
Cleaning the commies out of government run schools even when the government itself isn't full of commies was never that easy. Now it's impossible.
Pulling our kids out and leaving the commies to contemplate their navels would be far superior. Not perfect, but better in every way than what we have.

As for the rest, millions of kids get to private schools now and play sports there and go to proms etc. Parents and teachers and administrators are perfectly capable of doing all those things in a private setting without the long coercive arm of the state involved.
And without the gigantic taxes spent on government schools now, most property owners would have a good deal more money to spend on private ones.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--But inevitably it will be the camel's nose under the tent.--

I consider the tent being a private education system and the camel being the state trying to nose its way in, far superior to the tent being state run indoctrination centers and the camel being a parent just trying to get a look at what's going on in the circus of monopolistic and dictatorial public schools.

Marlene

Jane, Sebago? Belgrade Lakes area? We are way north of that area. Our part time neighbor down the road (our road dead ends on the Penobscot River and her extended family owns property on the river) was here today and told us something interesting. I consider a Darwinian solution counterproductive. If you want to win elections, telling people without resources that their kids are to be left in failing schools because they can’t get them to a better school because they don’t have transport is a bad idea.

All that that will do is allow the dems to paint us as heartless individuals who don’t care about kids. I can see the ads now.

I prefer trying to solve the problem and prevent the Marxists from gaining total control.

ALL Urban public schools are SHIT HOLES. Tell me different. Those schools are run by the LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS and the entrenched SHITE PILE.
MOST.....MOST.... Public school grads, have NOT BEEN EDUCATED AT ALL. But they do know how to put a CONDOM on a banana, AND, they celebrate MLK DAY and BLACK HISTORY MONTH. It's that bad.
Take a look at BALTIMORE or MILWAUKEE statistics.

It's the PARENT. If education has no place in BABY MAMA's life, sex and drugs have a place.

THIS IS WHAT YOU GET.

Miss Marple, the COMMIES are going to do that anyway. We're far beyond that. You hate bLACKS, you hate bROWN people, THEY CARE ABOUT ChiDrens. More cash to them equals better education.
IT'S WRITTEN IN STONE already. Primary schools teach the ChiDrens, that you are heartless, you are white, the CHILDREN NEED MOAR and MOAR money to help them. Where does that money go.
I wouldn't make education reform an issue. I'd merely point out how RIDICULOUSLY POORLY the FULL COMMIE has managed this. Milwaukee Public schools were shut down for over a year. My WIFE at a private non-diocese CATHOLIC SCHOOL, has not missed a single day. All of her kids go to college. My disagreement with you, is that I believe PUBLIC SCHOOLS are done. Put a fork in them. It's not because they were not FUNDED.

South Marlene, near the NH line. Frankly I don’t think it matters people are buying like lunatics.

MM2. A few years ago the SJW went after Midsomer. Basically because most of the people were white (It is in the country). Then the cast became more diverse.
