An Imminent Vaccine Mandate For Federal Employees?

Per CNN and "according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter", a big announcement is due Thursday:

Biden will announce vaccination requirement across federal government on Thursday

There will be an exception:

Biden will not impose the requirement on the US military, despite his authority to do so, for the time being. He is, however, likely to outline how the Department of Defense may seek to approach the issue going forward, the source said.

Obvious takeaway - you can keep your freedoms if you have a gun.

As Team Biden puzzles over how to promote vaccine uptake, they might find helpful clues in their NY Times.

The Defense Secretary:

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III has said he would not be comfortable with a mandate until the Food and Drug Administration fully approved the vaccine.

And a NYC municipal union leader irked by the new DeBlasio mandate:

Oren Barzilay, the president of a union of emergency medical workers that opposes the mandate, said that some of his 4,300 members have expressed concerns about side effects or complications from the vaccine and about the U.S. Food and Drug Administration not yet giving full approval to any coronavirus vaccine.

To belabor the seemingly obvious - if taking the vaccine is such a no-brainer, how come the Big Brains at the FDA are still noodling it? They want more data, but the vax-hesitant are knuckleheads for wanting more data?

I'm pro-vax but anti-nonsense. Biden has said the FDA will approve these vaccines any month now:

“My expectation talking to the group of scientists we put together, over 20 of them plus others in the field, is that sometime maybe in the beginning of the school year, at the end of August, beginning of September, October, they’ll get a final approval” for the vaccines, Mr. Biden said.

September, October, whenever. What's the rush? RUFKM?!?

C'mon, man - I've worked in bureaucracies where 'Hasta Manana" isn't just a saying but a lifestyle commitment. But that is not what we look for in the Fire Department or the Police Department and it certainly shouldn't be the FDA approach to a tremendous public health crisis. I'm getting a mental image of a burning house with smoke, flames and people coming out the windows while the FDA studies whether the fire hoses contain BPA. Get this done!

The interview is with Andrew Huberman, who is doing research in neuroscience dealing with "optimal performance". The interview was done November 16, 2020. The interviewer is Lex Friedman, who has an annoying speaking style.

What's interesting to me is how this gives a window into the thinking of these young guys who have NO compunction about rummaging around in people's brains to produce the actions and thinking that they consider desirable.

It's 2 12 hours so possibly something to listen to while you are doing a weekend project.

I really don't get the Simone Biles criticism.
After our useless athletic system betrayed her by letting her be abused by that Nasser creep she came back to become one of the greatest gymnasts of all time with numerous individual and team gold medals.
Now, when burnout or pressure or whatever took their toll she pulled out because she couldn't perform up to Olympic standards.
I've never heard her whine or complain or shoot her mouth off about pretty much anything.
When someone as great and as tough as she has proven herself to be has to pull out I have no criticism of her, but it does make a performance like that Japanese gymnast in Montreal who hid his broken leg so he could perform on the rings, knowing the dismount might ruin his leg permanently all the more amazing.

I also get the newsletter from the BRAIN Project and it has stated expressly and repeatedly that they intend to map what experiences rewire what areas of the brain, in a normal brain, in a manner comparable to what the Human Genome Project did for DNA.

Dr J and I used to discuss this online and off. He had a friend whose area of expertise was NOT neuroscience, but who had been reassigned to the bRAIn Project because so much funding had been directed towards it years in advance.

Maybe it is just me, but I've been really down on the chase for more difficult and more points as the starting score. I'd rather they tone down the difficulty and strive for excellence.

They have the same problem in skating.

When you don't perform it perfectly, it takes away from the program and the artistic score.

And I hate the Wolf Turns on the floor and on the beam. They flail their arms to keep their balance sacrificing points along the way just because it has a higher start value for a skill. Learn to do a different turn sequence (a required skill)with a slightly lower start value perfectly and quit getting dinged for the screw ups on the harder skill.

Female gymnasts typically begin winning the big competitions at @ 15-16. Rowers are in their 20's as are most top athletes. There are a lot of swimmers in their teens as well.

When you get to equestrian or fencing or other sports, the age can be much older.

I know, Matt.. I just think 13 is a bit too young. One of the other skateboard competitors was in her late 30s? 40s? basically could have been the winner's granma (almost).

Set the age at 16. I've seen the results of trying to do too much at a young age. Knees, ankles, hips wrists and shoulders are totally abused and a 13 yo in a tunnel vision mindset is going to be hobbled later in life.

The hubs was invited to the Olympic tryouts in Gymnastics in 69? IIRC and just HS and College gymnastics has his back and knees all screwed up. He coached men's gymnastics for several years before they finally did away with it in the HS level(club gymnasts were not joining HS sports anymore).

He watches the competitions and just repeats "you can't do that!" Of course when he competed there was no podium for floor exercise (terrazzo floors or wood if you were lucky). And no decent pads til the 70s. Lots of injuries, too.

The USOC sent out a flyer to all the HS's and Universities announcing trial dates and performance qualifications.

Fugaboutit. I wasn't even 75% there in all 3 disciplines. These kids in Athletics, Swimming and other sports are riding clouds while we mere mortals are hanging on to tree trunks. A very different world of athletics.

Good afternoon! I made an unexpected trip to Bangor this morning because I thought my phone was dead. The nice young man at Verizon brought my phone back to life. I noticed that most of the customers were elderly tech dummies. :)
Anyway, I just caught up on the comments. One of the daughter's childhood friends in northern Maine was put thru the pre-Olympic training hoops in the cutthroat skating competitions. She went to private school near Boston and had a coach and training while in school. Then she went to Colorado for further coaching while at CU. I think she "aged out" of competition. She returned to Boston and went to med school. She is now a GI doctor. Hubby was her confirmation sponsor and they still have a bond. The competition at that level is brutal.

Crushing dissent, upending the economic miracle, and threatening their neighbors and trading partners would not seem to be great strategic policy. The thing is with the Belt & Road, all of those fixtures are in place and can't be moved. If those countries default it's just tough luck.

I have hope for one reason.

Nothing is a foregone conclusion.

Not a single damn thing.

Norway and Venezuela have approximately the same oil resources and yet, Norway isn’t Venezuela.

The continent of Africa is four times as large as the United States and possesses more natural resources and yet America isn’t Africa.

It isn’t luck, we are always the products of the decision that have been made.

America didn’t happen by accident; it was a product of deliberate actions and conscious decisions.

If America falls, it will be for the same reasons – our fall will be the product of deliberate actions taken and conscious decisions made.

The Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard said, “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”

Living life forward means nothing is a foregone conclusion.

While there are those who ascribe success and failure to luck – or a mere accident of entropy – there is a pattern to each. I’ve often said that many things we perceive as random events are not, the appear random because we just do not have enough information to see the patterns. History offers us the opportunity to see those patterns with a degree of clarity impossible to those intent upon divining the future.

I seem to be stuck on car analogies these days, but I heard this from my grandfather many, many years ago. We were sitting on his front porch talking about any of a multitude of subjects and the conversation drifted to something I had done that I regretted. He told me it is impossible to drive a car while looking only in the rearview mirror, that to get where I was going would require that I stop looking back and look forward.

History cannot be changed, nor is it subject to recompense.

Decisions made throughout history inevitably creates perpetrators and victims out of the same skin – at one time or the other everyone is either the oppressed or the oppressor.

Anyone who claims reparations for past societal actions are appropriate or even possible is simply a lying con artist.

Kierkegaard’s quote indicates something else and when I combine it with the rural Mississippi wisdom of my grandaddy, it results in this – you can’t know where you are going without knowing where you have been. History’s true purpose in our lives is to create understanding of what decisions we made, what the results of those decisions were, what we must do to avoid the problems and costs of the past and what we must do to reap the benefits of our past.

My granddaddy and Søren Kierkegaard are sending us all a message from beyond the grave.
