Well, looks like the tourist season this summer will YUGE, even up here in the woods. I went to the grocery store earlier and it was a nightmare. The parking lot had lots of out of state plates on vehicles towing boats and ATVs. It has turned chilly here, but the temps should recover by Sunday.
Ha... a toddler in a shopping cart behind me let out a blood curdling scream and the woman in front of me said, "my exact thoughts!"

All the wrong reasons in one place, all at once, is a bit too much of a coincidence. After Gensler's warnings about "Payment For Order Flow" and HFT, you'd think someone, somewhere in there would say "Wait just one cotton-pickin' minute...".....but noooo.

I figure the virus was deliberately manufactured and set loose as a bio-weapon, someone has hard evidence, and the best the dems and media can do is portray this as an "accident" with panicky cover-up.

I believe this absolutely.

The problem is that - regardless of who’s in the White House or how honest they are, we can’t openly say that, even if we have ironclad proof, without having to declare war on China. What other possible response could there be if the President goes on TV and shows hard proof that the PRC deliberately murdered 500,000 American citizens? And it’s been our stated policy that we will respond to WMD attacks with nuclear weapons. I don’t think Trump was any more ready to launch nukes against Beijing or Wuhan I. Retaliation than the Democrats or any RINO would be.

MissMarple2

James D.,

I agree with your supposition completely. I actually think Trump was giving them an easy out, where they could do a "mea culpa" before the UN and allow them to resign in disgrace, forming some sort of an interim government.

Had the democrats not propped them up and taken all sorts of $$$ from them in order to win the election, perhaps this would have worked.

At one time, back in the days of the Steel "dossier", I even entertained the idea that the attack was engineered by some of our "allies", including the UK. THAT would have been a pretty kettle of fish, wouldn't it?

This is why so many spoke with contempt about his "America First" agenda. Too many weasels with their own interests giving advice and working against the people of this country.

Warning: This post contains math.

No truer words have ever been written than those of Frédéric Bastiat’s definition of government:

“Government is the great fiction through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else.”

Written in 1848, Bastiat for once and for all described, in one sentence, the eternal conflict between the individual and the enties and processes by which humans seek civil and peaceful coexistence. That conflict is still, as it was in 1848, the root, trunk, and branch of the conflicts we face as a nation in 2021.

Bastiat’s definition can also be considered as a mathematical equation or chemical formula, something like this:

L = F – (G(1-S) + T)

Where L is individual liberty, F is total freedom, G is the amount of government and S is the percentage of individual social and economic freedom we are willing to give up for the maintenance of a civil society and T stands for tyranny (the coercive power of government).

Of course, everybody will have their own idea of a formula, so cut me a little slack – this one serves my purposes, but anyone with any experience in math or chemistry knows that for an equation or formula to be valid, it must balance – everything on one side of the equal sign must be the same as that on the other. For that matter, forget math – anyone who has ever used a triple beam balance or a scale knows how once side must be the same as the other to be in “balance”.

In Bastiat’s definition, the key variable is “T” because what the individual agrees to surrender to maintain a civil society does not matter, it is fixed at zero. In the historical American constitutional republican example, “T” is set to zero and the key to balancing this equation for the individual is to find the value that substitutes for “S”, the most important variable in the equation and the only one explicitly defined by the individual.

The Hell of it is that nobody cares.

By that I do not mean there are no longer some people who care, it is that the hardy few who do, comprise a distinct minority, one subsumed by a tidal wave of the bulk of society who, as Thomas Jefferson so aptly observed, have been “…reduced to be mere automatons of misery, and to have no sensibilities left but for sinning and suffering.”

Forget chemistry, nobody can do the math these days.

Sure, we yell and scream at each other about it, we write posts on social media like this one, but nobody really wants to consider what it means to balance the unbalanced equation of those who seek to live at the expense of others or the insidious role of those who seek power by promising to do so.

The fact is that nobody really wants to think about it. I think it is because intuitively, deep down, people know the equation can never be balanced, at least at the level of a national collective, without completely crushing the individual. Again, it is not they do not agree or support grinding the individual to grist under a great wheel, they just cannot (or will not) think about it in any way that could be considered critical.
It certainly seems that philosophical debate is no longer possible - and that is an eminently lamentable occurrence.

It seems not so much that philosophers or their philosophy no longer matter, it is now that people have accepted government as the how, they no longer care about the why and whether just because we can do something if we should do that thing. They are only concerned with using government to achieve a particular outcome, to balance the impossibly unbalanced Bastiat equation by increasing the “T” variable until “F” (freedom) approaches zero.

Bastiat was an economist and therefore a mathematician, and he recognized in his essays (“The Law” and “Government”) the eternal variable in any equation is the individual, that each person has their own equation, and they must be left free to solve their own equation by solving for the variable of their own wants, needs, and desires through their own individual abilities and capabilities.

On this Independence Day, we should remember our own formulas and what it is going to take to balance them. You may be surprised what satisfying your own variable is going to require.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Here's my contribution for the 3rd of July. Cross posted from JOM2;

Progs love America just as much as you or I; just not the one that was founded or that exists today.
They love the utopian one their fetid, febrile little imaginations conjure.
Utopians replace the adult wisdom of "don't make the perfect the enemy of the good' which enshrines humility in its proper place by recognizing that the world is an imperfect place full of imperfect people who have nevertheless, through trial and error found a great many things which work pretty well and have rejected a great many things that don't. And only a fool full of hubris tosses that painstakingly and painfully accumulated wisdom away.
As someone pointed out the other day, they replace it with 'the personal is political' which rejects out of hand all the wisdom accumulated in western Civilization through the centuries, most especially the Christian basis of it, because the essence of utopianism is the dumbasses who went before me didn't know what they were doing and that includes that ultimate dumbass and spoil sport, God. If they have a god, even he is a reflection of their hubris as they create xim in xir own gruesome image. They reject the obvious truth man is both flawed and imperfectable and instead turn the world on its head and tell us man's flawed nature is the corrupted result of the systems in place that corrupt him. Seemingly it never occurs to them that if man is the source of our corrupted systems why do they presume they are uniquely suited in all of history to create better ones?
Western Civilization exists as a system designed to place boundaries on inherently flawed man to channel the decent parts of his nature to productive and healthy goals that above all else make the world as safe and healthy as it can be for our kids. But no matter how many corpses accumulate, the new generation of progs always know better and they're just "the ones we've been waiting for" to get it right. [has there ever been a more revealing statement of every single thing wrong with progs than that one, or a more appropriate vessel to carry that message than the Punahau Prince of Darkness?]

In IIRC 1 Corinthians Paul notes that we do not battle against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers; meaning the progs we are currently in a death match with over America are not the real enemy because all human conflict is a spiritual one. And so in one sense progs are correct that we are in a battle of good vs evil. They're just incorrect about which side they're on.
And how does the bible tell us that conflict arose? Satan through his hubris which gave birth to his pride [or perhaps they're one and the same] decided he would take the place of God and build his own kingdom and he didn't care who had to perish to build it because the originator of the phrase 'the personal is political' was Ol Slewfoot himself. And so, when you model your politics on an anti Western Civilization and anti orthodox Christianity worldview it is inevitable that you are aligning yourself with hubris, pride, greed, anger, foolishness and every other sinful thing you can think of, but above all with hate. God is love, as John the last of the apostles wrote. And He is not the simpering 'love' of the left which confuses every base thing it can with love. It is the love of an adult, responsible person who recognizes childish sentimentality and wishful thinking is one of true love's greatest enemies. So if you are in opposition to the system built primarily on God, albeit administered very imperfectly in an imperfect world by imperfect people, you are by default in opposition to that true unsentimental love because in the end the choice is between I and I Am. Embracing myself destroys the world. Embracing Him saves it because that was His whole point of coming, to seek and save that which was lost. So if you embrace Western Civilization, tomorrow is celebrated as Independence Day because we are ironically dependent on Someone bigger, better and wiser than ourselves who came to set the captives free. And the pinnacle of tat Civilization was America's Founding. But if you reject Western Civ [and therefore America's Founding ideals] tomorrow is Dependence Day because you have rejected true freedom by declaring yourself independent from the One who made you and have unwittingly chained yourself to someone also bigger than you, but very much worse and also immensely smarter than yourself.

This started out to be a one line comment; the first one.
I guess it's better to get my pontificating out of the way right off the bat.

Narciso

--No truer words have ever been written than those of Frédéric Bastiat’s definition of government:

“Government is the great fiction through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else.”--

Ol Freddy was succinct and spot on. However our own HL Mencken took a shot and while not as succinct, was just as spot on and even more entertaining;

The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can’t get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods.

Eleven heavily armed men were arrested after an hours long standoff with Massachusetts State Police on I-95 near Wakefield, MA. The men were headed to Maine from Rhode Island for "training." They refused to give their firearms to law enforcement which resulted in the standoff. After their arrest, the men told law enforcement they were part of a group called "Rise of the Moors." They said they aren't anti-government, but don't recognize any laws, so some sort of sovereign identity group? The BDN story is from the AP, so Boston media should have more info.
