I've watched this every 9/11 for several years. The 9/11 boatlift video - it's 11 minutes but very inspirational.

Rick Ballard

There are few Americans who expected their government to be paying hostage ransom to retrieve US citizens from bin Laden's children twenty years after Islamists leveled the towers.

Thanks, Joe.

Narciso

bin laden's landlords, actually some of his kids, except for hamza, (the sonny of the group) seem to be relatively sane, now the pashtun crowders (the haqquanis) are continuing the family business,

Momto2,

Thank you for that link to the Boatlift video. I had never seen it.

THAT is what America is really like.

Narciso

there was much noble that day, the efforts of countless men and women, from the firefighter that went into those burning towers, to the flight 93 passengers, that brought down the plane down in shanksville, the government, this slouching leviathan, they were worse then useless, blind deaf and dumb, and it hasn't gotten better in 20 years,

Buckeye

About this time 20 years ago, MT and I decided to close the office and send everyone home.

Rest of the day was surreal.

Momto2,

Those were NY Waterway ferries. My friend and ex-partner Arthur Imperatore,Sr. Founded them and owned them. Never hesitated to put them in action.RIP, Artur.

I miss MT. Buckeye. Hope he’s looking down on us.

The other thing Biden did with his vaccine mandate was to empower little Hitlers all over the world to do the same. We are seeing the light of freedom dimming every day.

Jack Lillywhite

MT passed? I must have missed that or my memory is shot.

Yes, Jack. Stunning but true.

And, he says, jokingly, both could be true about MT and memory. They both are true for me.

Miss him and the others, too.

I normally would have just getting to work 3 blocks from the WTC, but I was teaching a class on Tuesday’s and Thursdays at Yale that semester. So at 8:46 that morning I was going from Penn Station to Grand Central. I’d missed the 8:30 Amtrak train to New Haven because our nanny was late (infuriating me), so I took the 9:02 Metro North train from GC. No idea anything had happened. The only odd thing was that I couldn’t get any calls through on my cell phone. Had I looked downtown when the train crossed the bridge into the Bronx I might have seen the towers burning in the distance, but I didn’t. Then when we were passing through Westchester county around 9:30 my phone rang, as somehow my MIL got through and was saying something about something awful downtown, and I think she said something about planes hitting the WTC, but everyone on the train seemed blissfully unaware. It was only when the train stopped at Stamford that people coming on were talking about it. Then when we got to the New Haven train station around 10:30 there were TV monitors replaying the collapse.

When I got to the university the admin there who knew me looked at me like she was seeing a ghost. She could not believe I’d made it. Classes were not cancelled, but the class was half full at best, and it was very eerie trying to carry on. I also wasn’t sure if there was any way for me to get back to NYC, but around 3:00 I went to the train station anyway, and luckily they announced there was a train leaving, but only going as far as Mt Vernon in Westchester. I got on, and then they later announced that it would go all the way to Grand Central. The subways were shut down below 42nd St but still running uptown, so I made it home around 6:00. By that night the smell of smoke had reached uptown.

clarice

It was a beautiful clear day with perfect weather, I was eating breakfast I think when my dil called and said turn on the TV. For hours afterward I was glued to it.I'll never forget the sight.

20 years ago on this date I heard what was going on during my morning commute, and later on got a phone call offering me the job that I still have. I went outside and took the call on my cell, then I headed back inside and continued watching the horror unfold w/ coworkers on the TVs that the A/V dept. set up in conference rooms. My new manager, a Brit, moved to a different group about a month later, but I found out a few years afterward that he was annoyed that people weren't getting much work done that day.

matt - deplore me if you must

So GWB stepped in the shit this morning, again. What an embarrassing tool he has become. Those same generals and advisers bogged us down in a morass in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Trust them twice and all that.

In 2006, American contractors could drive around Afghanistan unchallenged for the most part. After that it went to hell. There was no real plan except to throw money at the warlords and build irrigation systems for the poppy crop.

Spoke with my nephew who was NYPD on site on 9/11 that day. He's doing fine, but goes to Mt. Sinai once a year for a full medical. We're going to meet up the next time he's over. 20 years and he was done. Even right after 9/11 the internal politics got in the way and he wanted no part of it. One cousin died of related cancer; the other is retired from FDNY and is living in Florida.

Ordinary people did extraordinary things in the aftermath and the Left and incompetence blew it all to hell.

clarice

My husband's office was in Georgetown. He had a balcony overlooking the Potomac and from there he watched the Pentagon burning. No one had any idea what was going on for days afterward there were rumors of other attacks..And of course then there was anthrax which I believe was certainly part of the plan.
The evening of 9/11 those downtown had difficulty getting home. The buses and metro were shut down, and some underground garages were not accessible. I live about 2 blocks down a hill from Connecticut Ave., one of the main thoroughfares and while those with cars generously gave lifts to as many as they could, for hours into the darkness I could here people trekking from downtown to upper NW DC and the Md suburbs in the dark.

Clarice,

Middle America is Joe's biggest problem especially for re-election. They will never forgive or forget. About time this phony and his phony party get their come-in-ups!

Marlene

Good afternoon! The daughter called me earlier this afternoon. As I mentioned at the end of the previous thread, she went to a friend's apartment after leaving the Russell Senate office building. She said she called that friend this morning and said, can you believe it has been 20 years?! She also said that when she tells a millennial that she called her mother collect that morning, they say, what is calling collect?!

Marlene

Yes, clarice @ 4:58. The daughter had to go back to the office to get her car keys. She went to the parking lot to get her car and asked a Capitol Hill policeman if she could get back over the bridge to NoVa. He didn't have a clue. She made it home eventually.
Then came the anthrax scare. The daughter was a lowly legislative correspondent. Her job was opening mail. The reason she had a car was because after her first year in DC, she had gall bladder surgery at the age of 23! We went to DC ( her surgery was at GWU Hospital) and hubby told her he would co-sign for a car after her recovery. Never a dull moment those first few years. :)

bubarooni

My Bro was working in DC on 9/11. I think for the library of congress.

Anyway, they were offsite for some meeting in a building at about the 10th floor. The large conference room they were in had a wonderful view of the pentagon.

He said the meeting was going nowhere due to the attacks in NY. He said that suddenly the dark conference room lit up and everyone turned to the windows and could see the mushroom cloud rising above the pentagon.

He said he blurted out 'bin Laden!' He was admonished by his boss for spouting gossip.

He lived right off capitol hill in a basement apartment. He wound up having to hoof it home, getting there about 7 PM . I called him that night and remember him talking about passing by checkpoints with guys in humvees and sporting m16's. He said it was surreal to watch f16's/f15's running combat air patrol overhead while he was walking.

I was just pulling into Washington, IN for work when I heard it. I was listening to the Bob and Tom show on the radio and they said some idiot ran a plane into a building in NY. As others have remarked, I recall distinctly what a beautiful day it was.

When I got to work, I had to go look at a printer issue in the retail pharmacy. They had a small tv on and people where huddled around it watching live news of the burning towers. Suddenly something happened on the screen and everyone gasped. I was looking at the screen but not processing what I saw. Someone said 'It's falling!' I'll never forget that moment as I finally realized what I was seeing. I remember muttering 'There could be thousands in that building...'

I was not very productive that day and left a 5 PM to go home and watch the news. On the way home I was listening to the news. I remember they were playing a clip of congresscritters singing God Bless America (?) and singing it along with them. I remember tears running down my cheeks and a truly burning righteous indignation.

Re. 911. I was sitting in the waiting room of Jiffy Lube in Arlington, 3 miles away from the Pentagon. Never heard a thing. There was a NPS policewoman there as well. Eventually she got up and said she needed to leave.

At the time, we lived in the District. My wife, who also worked in DC, had to walk home. It took forever to contact Trish because the cell phones weren't working. I even tried calling using a pay phone.

I stayed in Arlington for most of the day because they closed all the bridges into DC.

It was frustrating sitting in a car park for so long, just listening to the radio. Wondering how much of the commentary was real or just speculation.

Eventually, I got home around 8:00 pm, by travelling East and using Chain Bridge to cross the river, then drove up to Mass Avenue to avoid the center of the city.

I've heard it said before that Harris has no principles, either bad or virtuous. That kind of statement reeks of bile, right off--but her speech today proved that it is not only true as far as it goes, but that it might fall short of encompassing the question.
Her ramble today showed that she cannot stomach even a benevolent platitude. The speech's banality seemed to me to seek a vapidity so profound as to mock.
She's not dangerous because she lacks principles, or moral grounding. She's dangerous because she thinks those things are the tell-tale marks of rubes.

I worked at #1 Wall Street (Irving Trust) for 2 years during college in the securities messenger department. We delivered bearer bonds all over downtown. Usually I worked behind the counter preparing deliveries (anywhere from $5MM to $60MM),. Fiduciary trust was on the 10somethingth floor of WTC 1 I believe and during the rush I would saddle up and head over there and elsewhere delivering large sums. I must have been in there 50 times. The view was incredible.

One of my best friends has a wine list from Windows on the World from when he worked on Wall Street.

A lot of us have wonderful memories of the before times. Now with the Patriot Act and all the rest of it the oligarchy has zeroed in on their desire for a new digital peasantry.

Individuals stood up on 9/11 and afterwards. It all comes down to those individuals willing to sacrifice for an ideal. We need to keep that in mind as a creepy old man and an even creepier VP try to strip us of our rights.

the 2001 version of Bush was tolerable. By '08 he had worn out his welcome in my book. Now he's just another gravy trainer in the oligarchy. The Borg protects itself.

Dave (in MA)

More on 9-11...

I was driving into work listening to a talk show hosted by former state rep Peter Blute and his sidekick "Ozone", and the report of a "small plane" hitting the World Trade Center came in, and Ozone said, "No way. This is terrorism." He was spot-on. Two years later he was SHITCANNED because after reports of attacks on Israel by "Palestinians" that led to dozens of innocent fatalities, he said we have to "eradicate these people", and what we now know as Cancel Culture demanded a scalp. Looks like nowadays he's hosting a country music show in Louisiana.

My husband's nephew was scheduled to fly to California that day and all planes were grounded. we were scheduled to fly to L.A. to visit our son a couple of days after and it was a long time before we were able to get a flight there. It was from Baltimore and TSA was not really set up to handle this so we were delayed for hours 1st going thru security. We weren't allowed to carry thru food or dinks and after the security check we were placed in a locked room with no refreshments available for hours as our plane was delayed. I didn't think I'd be able to endure such a hassle again.

Dave, I was holding my 6 month old son, waiting for my M-I-L (Sue) to come and babysit so I could go to work. I heard that EXACT SAME THING. A small plane had hit one of the towers. My Grandfather worked in Manhattan, and I knew any plane hitting the top of the WTC was going to cause carnage. Even if by accident. I turned on my little tiny 5 or 6 inch tv in the kitchen and immediately saw the second plane hit. I KNEW.
I called my lib brother one year older than me, and I said "Rick, maybe this is what will bring us back together as Americans'." He said.

Thanks for that column. Any shred of decency Biden may have possessed (and it was pretty small) has fallen away as his dementia progresses. He views the American public as lab rats to be scared and manipulated.

You promised us your life. Now it’s time to help us protect you before we let you die some other way because you failed to avoid dying a way we didn’t want you to. If this doesn’t make sense to you, have a little faith. There is great honor in doing what you’re told,” Biden said.

Saw a meme this morning that said Biden was the combination of the radical leftism of George McGovern and the incompetence of Jimmy Carter.
While I would add the arrogance of Obama to that, I think the McGovern/Carter nexus is pretty much true - except for the fact that neither McGovern nor Carter were backed by a party that openly hated America and revered terrorists the way the contemporary Democrat Party does.
Sure, the Democrats have always swooned over leftist radicals but never as openly as they do today.
And keep in mind that while we see Biden's presidency for the failure it is - and it is a spectacular failure on all fronts - his supporters are claiming Biden is a success - and because they honestly believe he is, that tells you a lot about how much they want their enemies destroyed.
There is not a single thing the Biden administration has done that is good for America. America was working just fine until the draconian pandemic policies were instituted, most of which are now statistically provable to have had little to no positive effect. All he had to do to be successful is to do nothing, but he couldn't even do that.
Democrats are masters at projecting their sins onto others and they have become little more than the domestic terrorists they claim Trump supporters are, willing to take America hostage and hurt her until the other side surrenders.
My grandfather always told me that you learn the most about a man when he has nothing to lose - and the "in your face/just try to stop me" attitude of the Biden administration might just be an indication they have finally reached a point that they think they have nothing left to lose.
Winston Churchill wrote:
“Virtuous motives, trammeled by inertia and timidity, are no match for armed and resolute wickedness. A sincere love of peace is no excuse for muddling hundreds of millions of humble folk into total war. The cheers of the weak, well-meaning assemblies soon cease to count. Doom marches on.”
The first chapter of Churchill’s “Gathering Storm” is so packed with wisdom – and warnings – it is difficult to grab a pull quote out of it.
Every paragraph contains something worthwhile but while this particular quote was about the run up to WWII, I found it fits well when applied to our struggles with Islamic terrorism, the Global War on Terror that, for America, began in earnest with the downing of the Twin Towers.
But along with that, it is illustrative of the struggle within our borders against the asymmetrical warfare of the Democrats and the American radical left - the Squad, BLM and ANTIFA.
Let’s face it – our symmetrical world is not capable of dealing with asymmetrical threats. If our enemies don’t play by our established legal rules, we have no mechanism to deal with them. I don’t think it is beyond the realm of possibility that if all terroristic activities were concentrated into one nation-state, there is little doubt that America and her allies would likely declare war against that state and its allies and end the threat the way the Allied ended the Axis threats in WWII – but for lack of an actual administrative state with political and recognized geographic boundaries, war can’t (or won’t) be “legally” declared.
During the 18th century, wars were fought per specific, rigid and mutually respected “gentleman’s” rules. Everybody lined up on either side of the battlefield and like gentlemen, shot at each other until one side killed enough of the other side for it to retire. It was like a group duel until one side asked for quarter. Here in America, we have historical evidence of how asymmetrical changes to symmetric rules effect an outcome but when the Colonists started using the techniques learned in the various Indian wars, hiding behind trees and fences, sneak attacks and un-gentlemanly hours, ambushing and conducting hit and run attacks, the stiff upper lip Brits couldn’t hang. If it were not for these guerilla tactics, the outgunned, under trained, poorly supplied and otherwise rag-tag Continental Army and the various militias it was made up of would have likely lost and we would still be serving High Tea at 4 pm.
And that pretty much describes the country club the Republican party has become. We think fights should be conducted per the Marquis of Queensbury rules, no blows below the waist or thumbs to the eyes, quarter is given when quarter is requested, and the combatants respect the decisions of the judges and shake hands at the end of the bout.
Democrats are street fighters. They employ tactics that flout every rule in the book, it isn't enough to win, you must be beaten so badly, you can't get off the mat.
Our political warfare is a war against political terrorism, and in a war of and on terrorism, there are no rules.
Just win, baby - because the winner makes the rules.
General George S. Patton is reported to have said to his men that they must forget all the high-minded rules of war that were written in the parlors and salons of moralizing politicians, that the enemy doesn’t care about our rules and he will fight according to his own rules (or absence of them). In such a war, the only way to win is to fight according to the enemy’s rules – or even dirtier.
In our own minds, we know this to be true. On the battlefield, holding true to any rule of engagement that renders you defenseless or restricts your ability to mount an offensive will get you killed.
Somehow I doubt that a Democrat jihadi will praise you for your adherence to high moral standards after he cuts your head off.
Patton was right. War is about victory on the battlefield. Nothing more, nothing less.
Democrats are the domestic terrorists and Joe Biden is America's greatest national security threat.
