Red Covid
Covid’s partisan pattern is growing more extreme.
During the early months of Covid-19 vaccinations, several major demographic groups lagged in receiving shots, including Black Americans, Latino Americans and Republican voters.
More recently, the racial gaps — while still existing — have narrowed. The partisan gap, however, continues to be enormous. A Pew Research Center poll last month found that 86 percent of Democratic voters had received at least one shot, compared with 60 percent of Republican voters.
The political divide over vaccinations is so large that almost every reliably blue state now has a higher vaccination rate than almost every reliably red state:
At one time the Red/Blue divide based on vote share was blurred by Black hesitancy in the (Red) southern states. Headline-grabbing NBA athletes notwithstanding, it has turned out that by and large Blacks were hesitant but persuadable. Hard core Trumpers, not so much.
Leonhardt is interesting on messaging:
How might more conservative Americans be persuaded to get vaccinated?
One intriguing anecdote involves the football team at the University of Mississippi, which is entirely vaccinated even though the state has one of the nation’s lowest vaccination rates. Coaches there emphasized the tangible, short-term costs of getting Covid, rather than the more remote chance of death: The players might have to miss a game, and the team might have to forfeit it, if they tested positive.
A related message is duty, Timothy Carney has written in The Washington Examiner. If Carney had refused to get vaccinated, he explained, he would have risked loading more work onto his wife, his colleagues and his partner in teaching Sunday school, as well as forced his children to miss school.
Getting vaccinated to help out your family, friends and community?!? Whoa! This is breakthrough thinking!
For the win!

Coercion is coercion, by any other name. That includes this “duty” to get vaccinated. A duty which does not apply to those swarming across our borders. They bring Kung Flu variants, as well as much nastier and rare tropical diseases the US population of any color / race is not ready for.
A vaccine that protected you from disease would be helpful. The Kung Flu vax somehow missed that feature.

Meanwhile, a “resistance” which means nothing in the long term (aka until Thursday).
Senate Republicans on Monday voted down the House-passed bill to fund the government through Dec. 3 and raise the debt limit.
The final vote was 48-50 (60 votes were needed to advance the measure), with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) changing his vote from Yes to No so he could later bring the bill back up for a vote.

Breakthrough thinking would be our politicians and health bureaucrats and media not dealing lying to us about basically everything all the time, which, if they kept that up for a while, might go a long way towards restoring some trust in our institutions. Crazy, I know.

--Getting vaccinated to help out your family, friends and community?!? Whoa! This is breakthrough thinking!--
That's insulting.
If the vaccine works as advertised and has no long term or other deleterious side effects then you are not "helping out" your vaccinated family, friends and community by getting vaccinated, especially since the vaccine doesn't doesn't seem to cut down on the actual numbers of total infections, since so many of the vaccinated get asymptomatic infections.
Regardless, if the vaccine is effective as claimed then what possible legitimate reason is there to try and coerce those resistant to get the vaccine?
I am resistant mostly because I am not convinced the side effects and long term problems are well enough known. Nor am I convinced, though I'm over 40, that the vaccine poses a lower risk to me than getting the bug does. And even if it does, natural immunity sounds far superior to acquired immunity.
And lastly if I have a choice not to use a med developed or produced with the cells of aborted babies I choose not to use it.
Breakthrough that.

Could it be that people in rural areas find it even less likely they'll get Covid? And isn't it true that they tend to vote R in greater numbers?
Posted by: clarice | September 27, 2021 at 09:43 PM
Clarice, if viral load is key to Kung Flu transmission, the a big difference in risk between rural and urban areas. Urban areas feature densely packed people, forced to share public transport and elevators, with building HVAC spreading germs all over. Rural people are spaced apart in single family homes surrounded by fresh airs. Epidemics are a feature of population density.. basic science.

I would note that the Times article TM quotes from is based on a Pew Poll, not CDC statistics.
Is it accurate regarding differences in vaccine uptake between Dems and Reps?
Maybe, but I think it reflects more on the coercive mandates of blue state politicians.
The Pew Poll indicates to me that when people are allowed to think about the vaccine and aren't compelled to take it that they have valid reasons for doing so.
From the poll:
"Americans who are not inoculated against COVID-19 express a range of concerns about the vaccines. The August survey asked Americans whether various statements about COVID-19 vaccines describe them very well, somewhat well, not too well or not at all well. At least eight-in-ten unvaccinated adults said the following statements describe them very or somewhat well: “There’s too much pressure on Americans to get a COVID-19 vaccine” (88%); “We don’t really know yet if there are serious health risks from COVID-19 vaccines” (81%); and “Public health officials are not telling us everything they know about COVID-19 vaccines” (80%). Seven-in-ten unvaccinated adults also said the following statement describes them very or somewhat well: “It’s hard to make sense of all the information about COVID-19 vaccines.”
The survey also asked Americans for their reactions to changing public health guidance around some aspects of the pandemic, including information about how the virus spreads and how effective masks are in limiting its spread. Three-quarters or more of unvaccinated Americans expressed negative reactions to the changing guidance, such as by saying it made them wonder if public health officials were holding back important information (78%) and that it made them less confident in public health officials’ recommendations (75%)."

I think some of you remember me predicting early on that the vaccine numbers would peak in late May or early June.
Having it happen in April was a big surprise to me. Basically they were able to ramp up production and get as many as possible injected before concerns re-blossomed.
People that really, really wanted it got it. The initial scarcity of the vaccine probably led to even more demand. The way the vaccine was, in some cases, withheld for "political" reasons no doubt added to the demand for the vaccine. Nothing like a little scarcity to amp demand.
Then the J&J pause.
Then more stuff.
And they lost control of the messaging.

Funny how the Red/Blue divide numbers would in all likelihood be the reverse of what they are if the Dems hadn't successfully stolen the 2020 presidential election.
Sept. 2020 AFL-CIO Virtual Event
During a virtual union event in September of 2020, Biden was asked if he’d take the vaccine if it were announced the day after. He replied that he would, but only if certain stipulations were met.
“Only if it was completely transparent, that other experts in the country could look at it. Only if we knew all of what went into it, because so far nothing he’s told us has been true,” he said, referencing to then-President Trump.
Virtually everything the former president said about the coronavirus vaccine turned out to be true, including his claim that a vaccine would be out by year’s end.
[...]
Oct. 2020 Vice Presidential Debate
Asked during the vice presidential debate in October whether she’d take the vaccine if the Trump administration produced it before the election, Harris said she wouldn’t if it Trump told her to take it.
“If the public health professionals, if Dr. Fauci, if the doctors tell us that we should take it, I’ll be the first in line to take it, absolutely. But if Donald Trump tells us that we should take it, I’m not taking it,” she said.

Was on an international panel discussion of the supply chain disruptions in the electronics industry and it is going to get worse before it gets better.
The component manufacturers are behind the curve until mid-late 2022. Chinese component suppliers are giving priority to Chinese customers. Labor shortages of skilled workers worldwide. Basic metals shortages in Pd, Ni, and rare earths.
Even injection molding and enclosures are running long lead times.
On top of this is the shipping crisis.
The top players are meeting in DC and yet they have yet to understand the depth and breadth of the issue.
Topped with this is a power generation shortage in China that is way out of hand. Presently coal stocks at power plants are 18 days heading into winter. China simply doesn't have enough power. Europe has its own crises.
We have plenty of resources but a completely f'd up government getting in the way of power generation. This is fundamental to all of the other crises.
"What do we want? Power! When do we want it? On demand!"
This hasn't been an issue since the beginning of the Industrial Age. And yet the brightest men have forgotten the most simple lessons.
Even today, the materials guy spent most of his time either bragging how environmentally conscious they were (a major German company) and yet California is on the brink constantly and telling EV users not to charge their cars so the grid doesn't collapse.
And they want to ban the IC engine by 2030 - 2050 depending upon which asshole you listen to.
Psylocibin in the water supply.

Jim Eagle. I thought the LC was wrong to do what he did. But, where would we be without people who are prepared to lose everything. I am surprised that they would throw him in the brig, pending a court/trial. It seems as if they haven't made up minds what to charge him with.

From the Dalrymple article:
"...How has the Talibanization of Western mentalities happened? How is it that so many young people have now adapted Henry Ford’s great dictum (to change briefly the source of inspiration of young intellectuals), that you can have any color you like so long as it’s black, to matters of opinion, such that none other than the sanctioned one may get a hearing? How is it that the Taliban’s example in destroying the statues in Bamiyan was so soon copied by the students in those madrassas of the West known as universities?..."

Apparently there was a gag order imposed and he kept posting to social media anyway and that is how he ended up in the can, not for his original statements.

Unless they are not going to bite me because the drug telepathically informs them they will die, I'd prefer they not drink my blood at all.
