The Intercept has used the Freedom of Information Act to pry documents from the NIH. The topic is NIH grants to study bat viruses in a partnership of EcoHealth and the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Some of the "news" is old since the grants were mentioned in already-published studies. But some details ave been added.
Its a bit of a blow to Dr. Fauci's remaining credibility on the question of whether the US funded 'gain-of-function' research conducted by the Chinese. I'll gloomily guess this won't matter - the battle lines around Fauci have been clear for a while and I doubt there are many willing to shift sides. Just to recap, back in May Sen. Rand accused Dr. Fauci of approving gain of function research and Fauci denied it, vehemently. Over time the gist of his defense seem to be, it couldn't be gain of function research because the NIH review board OK'ed it. The BBC and the WaPo explain (I'll come back to the WaPo below.)
Still, here is Caroline Downey at the National Review:
Newly released documents appear to contradict Dr. Anthony Fauci’s repeated claims that the NIH did not fund gain-of-function research on bat coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).
The internal documents detail the work of EcoHealth Alliance, an American research non-profit which used NIH funding to research novel bat coronaviruses at the Wuhan lab. Among the documents, which were obtained by The Intercept through a Freedom of Information Act request, is a previously unpublished EcoHealth Alliance grant proposal filed with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, which is run by Fauci.
...
Fauci has repeatedly insisted during his Senate testimony that the research being funded by the NIH at the WIV did not qualify as “gain-of-function” under the NIH’s current definition. But critics, including Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, have accused Fauci of playing semantic games by excluding research which makes bat coronaviruses more transmissible — the commonly accepted definition of “gain-of-function” — from his more convenient definition.
Dr. Richard Ebright, biosafety expert and professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Rutgers University, has also disputed Fauci’s claims. Primarily, he has rebutted Fauci’s chief declaration that the NIH “has not ever and does not now fund gain of function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology [WIV]” as “demonstrably false.”
Ebright told National Review that the NIH-financed work at the WIV “epitomizes” the definition of gain-of-function research, which involves working with “enhanced potential pandemic pathogen (PPP)” or those pathogens “resulting from the enhancement of the transmissibility and/or virulence of a pathogen.”
We'll see if these latest revelations move the needle.
BACK TO THE WAPO: They are very intent on defending Fauci and nod along to what I find to be an utterly convincing explanation about gain of function research. The emphasis is on intent rather than results, which seems to me to be beside the point:
Update, May 19: The National Institutes of Health issued a statement to The Fact Checker which in part said: “NIH has never approved any grant to support 'gain-of-function’ research on coronaviruses that would have increased their transmissibility or lethality for humans. The research proposed in the EcoHealth Alliance, Inc. grant application sought to understand how bat coronaviruses evolve naturally in the environment to become transmissible to the human population.” When gain-of-function research was paused, “this grant was reviewed again and determined by experts to fall outside the scope of the funding pause.”
The gist of the controversial experiments was to mix and match different segments of different existing bat viruses to see if any of the resulting combinations could be dangerous. Its a fair and relevant questions since bats, and consequently their viruses, tend to co-mingle. But their defense, roughly paraphrased, amounts to 'this is not gain-of-function because we didn't know whether these recombinations would be infectious or not'. C'mon, man. "I wasn't playing with explosives, I was playing with random chemicals and never guessed they'd explode." No Nobel prizes there.
To be fair, the viruses the Chinese have told us about don't look enough like SARS-Cov-2 to be a smoking gun. But have they done undisclosed, unpublished work? Ah, well...
From TheIntercept FOIA:
One of the grants, titled “Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence,” outlines an ambitious effort led by EcoHealth Alliance president Peter Daszak to screen thousands of bat samples for novel coronaviruses. The research also involved screening people who work with live animals. The documents contain several critical details about the research in Wuhan, including the fact that key experimental work with humanized mice was conducted at a biosafety level 3 lab at Wuhan University Center for Animal Experiment — and not at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, as was previously assumed. The documents raise additional questions about the theory that the pandemic may have begun in a lab accident, an idea that Daszak has aggressively dismissed.

Conclusions: Moderate-certainty evidence finds that large reductions in COVID-19 deaths are possible using ivermectin. Using ivermectin early in the clinical course may reduce numbers progressing to severe disease. The apparent safety and low cost suggest that ivermectin is likely to have a significant impact on the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic globally.

Information Flooding: How the corporate media and the CDC's poison control centers used an internet propaganda technique to publish hundreds of "ivermectin poisonings" articles.
Hundreds of articles were based on six calls in Kentucky and nine calls in Minnesota.
The vast majority of calls to the CDC's fifty-five poison control centers have been people asking about the right dosage of ivermectin to take.
To put this into perspective, over 100,000 people call poison control centers about Tylenol each year.
Moreover, no one dies from ivermectin in a typical year, yet Tylenol accounts for 56,000 annual emergency room visits, 2,600 hospitalizations, and almost 500 deaths.
So why is the corporate media flooding the public conscious with stories about ivermectin poisonings❓
Pfizer and Merck are getting ready to launch expensive new anti-viral pills that can provide preventative and early outpatient treatment for COVID-19.
Because Ivermectin remains cheap, effective, and safe it continues to pose a massive threat to pharmaceutical companies' profits.
Therefore, the corporate media uses internet propaganda techniques to flood information into the public conscious about ivermectin poisonings.
Pharmaceutical companies' profits are also why the CDC, NIH, and FDA refuse to acknowledge safe and effective multi-drug treatment protocols or established science like natural immunity.
America's health institutions are so captured and compromised that they refusing to treat COVID-19 patients until they are hospitalized or dying.
They are even threatening to take away doctors' medical licenses for treating patients.
In other words, our health institutions are killing people so pharmaceutical companies can make billions.

News Flash: Fauci Lied

Well, not exactly news, but it is the big story today.
What’s new is that The Intercept has obtained something like 900 pages pertaining to two grants from the US Government to Peter Daszak’s Eco-Health Alliance, for research performed in Wuhan. While the additional facts that emerge from these documents can’t conclusively prove how Covid-19 was released to the world, they do increase the plausibility—which is already extremely high—that one way or another Covid-19 is the result of work done in Wuhan. In other words, it doesn’t have a natural origin.

Ignorant: Adj. "Lacking knowledge or education; uninformed."

“An honest man falls in love with an honest woman; he wishes, therefore to marry her, to be the father of her children, to secure her and himself. All systems of government should be tested by whether he can do this. If any system—feudal, servile, or barbaric—does, in fact, give him so large a cabbage- field that he can do it, there is the essence of liberty and justice. If any system— Republican, mercantile, or Eugenist—does, in fact, give him so small a salary that he can’t do it, there is the essence of eternal tyranny and shame.”

Do you guys remember me talking about my dad driving up to a castle in Italy and bringing some sort of scientist to the seashore, where he was picked up by a US Navy submarine?
Going through photos and papers this afternoon I found a postcard from the 40's with a photo of a castle. It is labeled "LERMA - Castello Marchese Spinola - Dettagilo." (The label is printed, not handwritten.)
On the back is my father's written message to someone here n the US, probably my grandparents or possibly my mom.
It says: " Stayed here on one of my business trips. All furniture is 17th century or older, Canopies over the beds, etc. Excellent wine. This is in the heart of the mountains, north of Genoa."
Well, I found the place which is still in existence as both a resort and winery! Here is the link to their web site:
https://www.oasicastellodilerma.it/en/castello-di-lerma-english/
The photo on the post card is looking up from below the round tower.
So there is a place he went to. The Italian printing company has the date 1941 on it. I assume he bought the postcard in Italy and made a note on it and brought it home, since it doesn't have a postmark or stamp on it.
I would never have been able to discover this much without the internet. I wonder what his other business trips were?

and 4 days earlier
https://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2021/09/national-resistance-front-repels-multi-day-taliban-assault-on-panjshir.php
I'm just guessing, but my sense is that the NRF lost at least one pass into the Panjshir Valley after a back-and-forth battle of several days.
Much of what is out there is propaganda or psy-ops, but people are wondering what changed? Was it just an overwhelming attack by the Taliban? Brute force, or was there something else, like the rumors that the Pakistani ISI introduced an aerial component into the battle?
The Indian press is running with this.
My sense is that the Taliban are in the valley, but don't "control" it. That would imply a devastating loss by the NRF. It's more likely that the NRF withdrew from a conventional battle that they were losing in order to preserve their forces.

The Taliban spent 20 years fighting the "man." Now they are the "man."
It's a new war.

Secretary of State Blinken: This Is Not a Hostage Crisis
"One of the complications that the administration’s statements choose to ignore is that the Taliban is not a particularly coherent, disciplined, or coordinated governing force. An assurance from one Taliban leader about safe passage may not filter down to the men in their late teens with M4 rifles at any particular checkpoint. Even if the Taliban wanted to keep their promises about safe passage — an extremely debatable contention — they may not be capable of keeping it; there are simply too many hot-tempered, heavily armed young men who are enjoying their newfound power over everyone they encounter."
The Taliban are bargaining with the world on what they want. In the meantime, the Taliban are bargaining with each other over what posts they want.

Local Taliban to the national Taliban, "I have these hostages, what am I bid."
Afghanistan would be a great place to hold the next international competition for special forces.

Good morning. Biden being heckled is good. College students chanting, "F@#$ Biden" is encouraging, too.

They(Taliban) should invite Bowe to join them as special emissary to the US.

Jim Nj, that heckling of SLOPPY JOE was just another CONSERVATIVE INSURREDTION.
I can always tell, a conservative insurrection.
There are no weapons.

Melinda,
Why didn't I ever run into accountants like that when I was running my eBay business? Here I was deducting miniscule stuff like postage and printer paper when I could have been writing off champagne and caviar!
By the way, I wonder if the attempted robbery of Bulgari Jeweler's in Paris is somehow wound up in all of this.

Apparently, the Taliban have painted over the George Floyd "I Can't Breath" mural in front of the US Embassy.
This brings logic to the US military studying CRT .. the Taliban are white supremacists.

Yep.
Someone should have probably suggested this to Dane County Circuit Court judge John Hyland, whose snide, condescending response to this columnist’s recent critique served only to reveal how thin-skinned and dangerously soft on crime the Dane County Circuit Court has become.
