In fifty years of owning dogs I learned something I never knew before today - the nicotine in a single cigarette butt is extremely toxic to a dog and can even kill a little one.
I left Chet in my truck for a couple of hours while I worked at our church this morning. When I went to get in the truck he jumped into the back seat and cowered like he thought he was going to get beaten. I figured he must have chewed something up or made a mess in the truck I didn't see.
But nothing. I put him on the leash to let him out of the truck and he could barely walk without falling over; like he had vertigo. I tied him up and kept an eye on him while I worked in another building until eventually he threw up a tiny dab. I thought it was a stick at first but eventually figured out it was a cigarette butt. I didn't put 2 and 2 together for some time. But he got worse to the point he seemed to be hallucinating because he'd bolt like something was after him so I finally googled "what happens when a dog eats a cigarette butt" and discovered the answer was pretty much what Chester was doing. I called my vet but she wasn't in. While trying to decide what to do I read more and apparently there is no treatment or antidote. If you catch it early they make him barf or pump the stomach and possibly give them activated charcoal, but it said after 4 or 5 hours they've pretty much absorbed what they're going to and you just have to wait it out. I kept a close eye on him and after 8 hours or so he just became lethargic and less wobbly so I let him sleep. Finally about 10 hours after he must have found it and eaten it on our walk early in the morning, he finally started getting his old spirit back. But even a couple of hours later he was still wobbly on his feet and dizzy. Nearly normal now but still a little off.
One article said if they're still alive after four or five hours the prognosis is good as that is the peak absorption/effect period. If he'd eaten two or three butts he might very well have died. And if he hadn't chucked that butt up where I could find it I would still have no idea what happened.
If like me, you didn't know this, you do now. Beware!

I usually empty ashtrays every couple of hours and my daughter's dog usually confines his chewing to stealing dry cat food from the cat's bowls, but I will certainly be more careful just to be safe.
