Captain Ed Morrissey keeps a weather eye on a couple of scandals the media would rather bury.
First, the Durham indictment of Clinton attorney Sussman may - I say MAY - be the start of something from Durham, finally. The notion that the Russian Collusion scandal was launched as a Hillary dirty trick and carried by sympathizers in the FBI, CIA and mass media is not a story the mass media has been eager to probe.
We all spent a lot of time waiting for Durham. Maybe he has more.
And, in other non-surprises, a Politico reporter is confirming the obvious - the Hunter Biden e-mails financially implicating "the big guy" look legit. Yet another "not in front of the kids" moment of infamy for the media, bith social and mainstream.

-- low BMI and malnutrition increased the risk of in-hospital mortality in geriatric COVID-19 patients who were mostly older than 75 years--
There's a shocker. Most people over 75 who are skinny and malnourished are in ill health, if not the process of dying.
There is a diminished number of morbidly obese people 75 or older; it's that morbid part that gets them before they get there.
So, many of the older people who are truly sick and most prone to Covid mortality are the remaining thin and sick people. Malnutrition from loss of appetite and atrophy of the body are characteristic of a great many progressive diseases that are especially prominent in geezers.
What did they expect to find, a bunch of healthy 85 year old, 400 pounders toddling along happily munching on double beef Whoppers on their Hoverrounds until Wuflu crept up and knocked them off unexpectedly?

Re thin people and disease… my recollection is the medical / pharma industry moved the goalposts on “thin” along with the goalposts on overweight, the goalposts on bp, etc. to increase the number of people on maintenance medications. (All while declaring morbidly obese as “healthy”.)
So anyone defined today as thin is seriously underweight as classified in the 70s. And being seriously underweight has always meant : malnourished, cancer, or illness. If you are already that sick, it doesn’t take much to end your days.
But that is just my memory.
Posted by: henry | September 22, 2021 at 08:54 PM
FTA I linked "While also examining data on newborn weight and stillbirths, researchers found that the association between being underweight and a higher risk of dying applies to both adults and fetuses, even when smoking, alcohol use, and lung disease are taken into consideration and when adults with a chronic or terminal illness are excluded."

"The unknown is how much the whole Evergrande episode has shaken faith in the property market as a whole. Chinese developers fund the construction of their projects by taking deposits on so-called "off-plan" apartments that have yet to be built. Confidence in that system is reeling right now."
"Evergrande owes money on 1.4 million properties that it currently has under construction, leaving it with around C¥1.3 trillion (US$201 billion) in presale liabilities for properties it has committed to build, according to Capital Economics."

Everybody Hates the Jews
A disturbing new study confirms what many Jewish Americans are feeling.
I pretty much agree with everything she writes, but take exception to this:
"The far right says Jews aren’t white enough — that they appear to be white, but are, in fact, loyal to the people who are sullying the “real” America. This was certainly the motivation of the white supremacist who walked into Tree of Life and massacred 11 Jews. Meanwhile, the left says the opposite. It says we Jews are too white to be oppressed. It says, indeed, that we are the exemplars of white privilege, capable, as we are, of changing our Lifshitzes into Laurens and passing. And to make matters worse, Jews support Israel, which, they insist, is not Jews’ indigenous homeland but the last bastion of white colonialism in the Middle East.
In this way, Jews are being successfully transformed into neo-Nazis in the public imagination at the very moment that we are being targeted by actual neo-Nazis.
But unlike the alt-right, whose hatred is unabashed and familiar to a people who survived Hitler, those who promote this big lie — the lie of the Jew as the white man and the uber-imperialist — are our leading intellectuals, magazine editors, book authors and influencers."
This strikes me as a false equivalence. Maybe it's me, but I don't like to see neo-Nazis and their ilk described as being on the far or alt-right.

Evergrande collapse could be ‘worse’ than Lehman for China: Jim Chanos
Posted by: jim nj | September 23, 2021 at 12:27 AM
Almost all of the stories about Evergrande have focused on its total debt and its expected failure to meet bondholder debt. Ergo, an expected bankruptcy.
300 billion in debt and that the bankruptcy might have world-wide consequences. 300 billion is a big number.
I think I have already discounted the impact on international markets. Then I found this from above:
"Evergrande owes money on 1.4 million properties that it currently has under construction, leaving it with around C¥1.3 trillion (US$201 billion) in presale liabilities for properties it has committed to build, according to Capital Economics."
Apparently Evergrande owes 2/3 of their known debt to the people who have already paid for apartments that haven't been built yet.
Best else I can find is there is about 20 billion of bond debt. So there is somewhere around 80 billion in other debt owed to domestic investors, suppliers and domestic banks.
This is going to be a Chinese real estate collapse more than anything else.
There are 1.4 million Chinese wondering if they are going to get the apartment they already paid for.
I don't care if there are other financially stronger Chinese developers who can take up the slack - their financing model just blew-up.

It’s mental health, stupid: How Team Biden misunderstands homeless crisis
"Team Biden is asking mayors, governors and tribal leaders to pledge to reduce homelessness in exchange for new federal rental assistance and support for new housing construction. The initiative is called House America, but it should be dubbed Misunderstand America.
Yes, housing prices are up post-pandemic: Demand is growing, supply stalled. But that isn’t why there are massive homeless encampments plaguing cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle — and even New York, where the de Blasio administration is forced to play whack-a-mole with tent encampments.
Some rough-sleepers would relish permanent housing, yes. But many would also choose to stay on the streets. That’s because untreated mental illness, not a housing shortage, is the real source of the problem for a significant share of the homeless."

The Europeans have misread Biden and misjudged Johnson. A bad combination
On Aukus:
"From the second world war until the last decade US foreign and security policy was focused on Europe and the Middle East. Under presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden it shifted to the Indo Pacific.
This begs the question: why is the UK part of this shift, and not France? The US considers France and the EU unreliable with respect to China because of their special relationships. Germany and France have pushed the EU-China comprehensive agreement on investment just before Biden’s inauguration. Germany runs massive export surpluses with China that it wants to protect. Armin Laschet and Olaf Scholz are both in favour of extending the bilateral relationship. Europe has also left a door open to Huawei for its 5G networks. It was only the UK that really cut the links."

You might imagine that an hour-long video would include a lot of rambling over the same points but that’s not the case. It just takes an hour to go through all the evidence even moving at a fairly good pace. It’s one of the most egregious widespread abandonments of journalistic principles in recent history and there’s not a bit of doubt that the whole thing happened for one reason: To protect Joe Biden from accurate claims weeks before an election."

I understood the study clarice linked to be referring to seriously underweight individuals, not just someone thin.
Fer instance at 6'4" and around 208 my BMI is ~25.
To get to 18.5 or below [the threshold the study said put people at greater risk] I would have to weigh a maximum of 150.
IMO a 6'4" guy who weighs 150lbs or less may not have cancer or heart disease but there is usually something abnormal going on physically, mentally or both to cause that low a weight.

The way the Durham case is shaping up leaves two options for the CIA and DoJ. Were they duped or were they unindicted (so far) co-conspirators?
Either way it sucks to be them.

Those air purifiers are at a premium along China's eastern seaboard. Not quite like S&H toasters.
Berlin's city government is certifiably insane. There are probably more squatters than renters, including Tante Angela. Property rights of landlords are almost nonexistent, and the real estate law is wide open to fraud by purchasers.

Actually somewhere in that article or another one I read, being older and overweight [but not obese] was associated with lower overall mortality and better outcomes.

Of course they have. The descendants of Tammany Hall don't accidentally say things like that. They know they're lying and are proud of it.
Whaddaya gonna do about it?

Bannon had the author of "Woke, Inc. -Inside Corporate America's Social Justice Scam" today.
Very interesting guy named Vivek Ramaswamy, who saw it close up as the CEO of a newer tech start-up in Silicon Valley.

It makes sense. Fat exists for a reason. Ask a hibernating bear.
When you're older and obese you stress your body with obesity related diseases and pathologies until you croak. If you're older and too skinny, when your body is stressed by disease or environmental conditions you have no reserves to draw on, as the hibernating bear does, nor do you have an appetite to replenish your reserves as the prehibernating bear does, so your body consumes itself, possibly before you can recover from the illness or stress.
When you've got just a bit of Rubensesque, Goldilocks-just-right chubbiness going on, you're in a happy medium.

I have to hand it to Whitmer, usually de-Nazification happens after they lose a war, not before they lose an election.

Hochul seems to be Whitmer's doppelganger, but unfortunately the NY electorate likely won't respond like Michigan's. Not to mention that NY's Republican party is even more clueless than the rest of the country's.
