Touting good paying union jobs, Joes told cheeseheads yesterday:

“China produces more steel in one month than America does in an entire year!” – President Plagiarist – 10/5/21

Ever been to the Rustbelt, Joe? Or Pittsburgh, Joe? You know what killed the industry in Steeler Town, Joe? UNIONS, demanding high wages trying to compete w/inexpensive foreign steel production, Joe.

Went to college w/kids who were making so much $ per hour working in the J&L steel mills over the summers for just three months– that it paid for an entire YEAR of college tuition, room and board. And you know what killed the glow of the mills too, Joe? Environmental rules and regs- ‘green new deal’ crap.

From the link title, I’m not sure that means anything. Silicon Valley is known for taking short cuts, not doing the hard work of securing things. (Thus regular finding of sensitive consumer data on unencrypted cloud drives). Haugen perusing sensitive internal files undetected is credible.

This is no different than IRS (contractors) perusing and releasing tax files. Or DOD / CIA contractors perusing and sending personnel files to China undetected.

Both Silicon Valley and the govt share one key cultural value: the don’t give a f about regular people… they just get rich by abusing them.

The rise of populism has been bubbling for several cycles as voters backed 15 weenies against a T-bone, albeit a little fatty. They read the menu and ordered the Trump steak.

Now they abandoned their party and stuck the country with a Peter Principled, incompetent imbecile; a swamp creature who was the very reason Trump won in the first place. It's turning out that Joe Biden is the best campaigner for Trump 2024.

Most likely, shortages on store shelves beginning in December and January are inevitable now. There is just not enough time for the kinks in the supply chain to be yanked straight.
Keep your eyes on global manufacturing and transportation - what we are seeing is a test of how the global supply chain can be weaponized.
I'm ashamed I spent two decades of my career working to establish global supply chains for major companies. We were so blinded by cheap stuff and labor, we skipped the part where we should have asked just because we can do something, should we do it?
We all bought into the lie that China and emerging countries wanted to be just like America when they just wanted our money and to steal our innovation. It's bad. We made a huge Faustian bargain. Just today, I wrote about the rise of "denationalized" corporations that are also a consequence of our folly.
I'm afraid we got a boatload of hurt coming.

Melinda

I believe we haven’t been shared with an accurate picture of any of the supply chain issues. I KNOW steel is not one of them. Chips for computers aren’t an issue, just 1960s designed car chips are. Soooo, do you update the car designs or rely on 60 yr old chip requirements?

Where are They (automakers) on that update?

henry

Where is NTSA, EPA and the Karens of California that screw with our vehicles on that. I blame regs before I blame woke corps. (Given everything must pass through both, I’m shocked the planet hasn’t exploded yet).

Toymakers race to get products on shelves amid supply clogs

"Running out of time to get its products on store shelves ahead of the holidays, the Basic Fun toy company made an unprecedented decision: It’s leaving one-third of its iconic Tonka Mighty Dump Trucks destined for the U.S. in China.

Why? Given surging prices for shipping containers and clogs in the supply network, transportation costs to get the bulky yellow toy to U.S. soil is now 40% of the retail price, which is roughly $26. That’s dramatically up from 7% a year ago. And it doesn’t even include the cost of getting the product from U.S. ports to retailers.

“We’ve never left product behind in this way,” says Jay Foreman, CEO of Basic Fun. “We really had no choice.”

Illustrating my thought that inexpensive, bulky items won't make the boat ride to the US this year.

Interestingly just saw that Japan in interested in its own version of a 5th gen air superiority fighter and has asked Lockheed and Northrup to present proposals, presumably versions of their F-22s and F-23s.

A perfect example of how stupid the Reduhlicans are.
To the majority of people Uncle Sam is a piggy bank that really does cost zero. Even those who are irked by SS taxes think that is the Feds doing them the favor of a great pension plan and everything else is free.
Not only will no GOPe dope ever understand how that fundamentally perverts those people's attitudes toward government, they will til their dying day trumpet how many people they've pushed off the tax roles or even into the money-for-nothin-and-the-chicks-are-free, tax credit camp.

re sharyl atkinson

Another problem raised is that sources say they were told President Biden refused to allow declaration of a noncombatant evacuation operation (NEO). Such a designation, widely expected by those on the ground as Afghanistan fell, would have triggered a specific military and special operations response with an adequate number of U.S. troops heading to Kabul to assist in evacuations.
For example, 10,000 NEO troops, including U.S. forces from Kuwait, could have descended quickly upon Kabul. Some would have parachuted into Bagram air field, if allowed, to secure it and use it for evacuations.

Hope you're feeling better MM!

Spent yesterday afternoon discussing supply chain issues in electronics mfg at a conference. Pretty crazy. Lots of raw materials come from China as well as finished product.

One company had to air freight 1Kg and 5Kg pails from Taiwan for their product. Ridiculously expensive, but any U.S. suppliers laughed because they are sold out as well. Plastic pails, for goodness sake!

My current project is an evaluation of re-shoring in electronics manufacturing. We may not have a choice. Chine supplies 50% of all global yellow phosphorus and has huge market share in a broad range of other products.

Between the internal issues and the political, it's become a complete mess.
