Sen. Manchin With One Foot Out The Door

It's now or later - the always interesting and sometimes reliable David Corn reports that Sen. Manchin aired a plan to ease on out of the Democratic Party. The current point is to pressure Biden, Pelosi and Schumer on the package formerly known as the $6 trillion social infrastructure bill. Manchin wants to to cap it at $1.75 trillion and apparently expressed major philosophical differences with his party:

Manchin has repeatedly said he has a significant philosophical difference with most of his fellow Democrats. He has told reporters that he believes major programs in the Build Back Better bill would move the United States toward an “entitlement mentality” and that he cannot accept that. In a recent meeting with Biden, Manchin told the president that he sees government as a partner with the public not the ultimate provider, according to people who heard the senator’s account of the conversation. He explained to the president that in his view Biden didn’t win the presidency last year by championing progressive proposals, and he pressed the president to recall his campaign promise to bring people together. He also reminded Biden that he has vowed not to support any package unless it contains the Hyde Amendment, which bans the use of federal funds to pay for abortions, except in cases of incest or when the life of the mother is at risk.

Left up in the air is whether Independent Joe would caucus with the Dems and leave Sen. Schumer as Majority Leader (for now) or swing a deal with Cocaine Mitch and join the Republicans. Time will tell but let me note this - Manchin will get a better deal with Mitch now then he will after Nov 2022 if the Republicans win back the Senate without him.

As to what will be won by whom come Nov 2022, we are in or around coin-toss territory. But there is a lot of time left, obviously.

Worked in Hollywood. They get 'training' in basic usage [Baldwin's had that experience for years] and the pieces are modified for safe film work.

But the safety of the weapon itself for use on set is the responsibility of the PROPMASTER, not the actor.

So this isn't on Baldwin at all. Somebody likely either failed to clean and clear the weapon properly or it was loaded w/a faulty cartridge- or simply misloaded it completely.

You don't know the particulars and having worked in Hollywood myself there are strict protocols regarding firearm use on set; actors using same are schooled in their use and AB knew them-- the responsibility lay with the prop master on set and the cian of custody for prepping the use of the firearms on set. Clearly something went awry- be it an uncleaned weapon, a faulty cartridge or a live round or wrong caliber round loaded into the weapon--- nd none of that is the responsibility of the actor. It's the prop master who is ultimately responsible for managing the props.

Iggy- Well the term 'live round' has differing meanings w/t film set; not necessarily a 'live round; aka a standard bullet round civilians think of but 'live' in terms of a hot blank, etc. The carts and loads for these weapons vary and it's the responsibility of the prop master/armaments team to follow the protocols. Weapons cleaned, loads proper for the weapons in use. Hollywood is quite anal bout this sort of thing-- chiefly for insurance, legal and liability issues. And the armaments/prop master folks usually are quite meticulous and safety conscious about this, too-- their reps and jobs depend on it.

But if the team says hey, this is a dangerous load for this scene and the director says 'I'm the director! Put that pistol up to your nose and stand directly over that mortar tube and pull the trigger on both' the heat falls on the director for putting the actor in harm's way.

Just bought a new Whirlpool refrigerator at Lowe's because Home Depot said they could not deliver one until March, 2022. So Lowe's delivers it and we discover the ice maker system doesn't match.

Seems Whirlpool changed the ice maker connector design in the freezers and all their 'new fridges' are shipped with it-- but the problem is, they failed to tell the retailers of the change and the new ice makers to match the new friges wont be available until MID-2022!!! So the warehouses of retailers across America are stocked w/inventory of the new refrigerators but do not have the 'new' ice makers to operate in them. So I ended up w/t floor model which is already set up.

This is the reality Joe doesn't get.

IATSE Local 44 has said that a live bullet was fired on set by Alec Baldwin. They also said that no Local 44 union members were on the set.
So, everyone who doesn't understand how the industry works are assuming that the production hired non-union people to work the props and weapons.
This is not true. Local 480 covers those departments in New Mexico. The departments WERE staffed by IATSE members, just local ones, not ones from Los Angeles.
And this is the problem. Over the last several decades, IATSE has become more and more aggressive in "flipping" shows. That means forcing a non-union show to become union. This gives them the pension and health money they need to pay for their older members. It's a glorified Ponzi scheme. So, non-union productions are forced to pay more money they don't have to the union and a bunch of non-union crew people, many with entry level skills and experience are now "union professionals".
It used to be that they wouldn't touch shows under $5 million. Then it became $1 million. Now there is no minimum and they attack shows as low as $250k in my experience.
And, make no mistake. They use intimidation, threats, and sabotage to force these shows to flip. I had one show where the other producers were scared, so I went, alone, to the IATSE headquarters in Manhattan to be yelled at, threatened and warned that my show would be sabotaged and I was in physical danger if I didn't negotiate with them.
Me being me, I laughed at them in the meeting and then managed to drag out the "negotiation" past the point of finishing the movie.
They really don't like me.
But, the point still stands that a union member is dead because there are inexperienced people out there commanding the salary and respect of trained professionals, especially in markets like New Mexico, Michigan, Georgia and Louisiana. Membership in the union used to take years and required people to work under much more experienced people to learn the craft.
Now, any clown with a couple of short films who gets hired on a movie can call in the union, conspire with them to flip the show, and end up walking away with a union card.
Current Hollywood is unlivable and dangerous. Between inexperienced yahoos commanding $35/hr, Covid protocols and someone's race, gender or sexual orientation trumping the quality of work or experience, I would not step foot on an IATSE show at this point.
It is unsafe and doomed to creative failure.
Sorry, not sorry to all my union friends because you guys know that I'm right.
And for the record, based on my experience I am eligible to be a member of IATSE Local 600, the DGA, the WGA and SAG. I have chosen, for political and moral reasons to never join any of them.
