Ezra Klein on David Shor and why the Dems face a looming disaster in the House and Senate. Writing in Politico, Ian Ward also covers the David Shor phenomenon. After describing the eternal Dem enthusiasm for youthful idealists, he notes this:
At its most basic, Shor’s theory goes something like this: Although young people as a whole turn out to vote at a lower rate than the general population, the aforementioned type of young person is actually overrepresented within the core of the Democratic Party’s infrastructure. According to Shor, the problem with this permanent class of young staffers is that they tend to hold views that are both more liberal and more ideologically motivated than the views of the coveted median voter, and yet they yield a significant amount of influence over the party’s messaging and policy decisions. As a result, Democrats end up spending a lot of time talking about issues that matter to college-educated liberals but not to the multiracial bloc of moderate voters that the party needs to win over to secure governing majorities in Washington.
I'd guess this 'college kids versus the rest of us' dynamic began to divide the Democratic Party in the 'hippies versus hard hats' clashes of the Vietnam War era. The decline of private sector unions and the drift of the working class to Republicans (made famous by the Reagan Republicans) has tilted the balance towards the College kids. Emmet Rensin described the Democrats as the Party of Smug back in 2016, although Conor Friedersdorf observed that Republicans could contest the mantle. (Stewart and Colbert vs. Limbaugh and O'Reilly?).
In a similar vein Matt Yglesias recently exhorted his fellow Dems to give an occasional nod to reality:
The median voter is a 50-something white person who didn't go to college

Dem leader, man of the people. From the Kass article.
Even Sen. Dick Durbin, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, says he was almost a victim, relating that the other evening, after having left a restaurant, he and his wife were almost shot in a street-gang battle on DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
“I heard a popping sound,” Durbin said. “I didn’t know what it was, but the driver of the car said, ‘Those were gunshots.’ And it turned out to be the car next to us, and the driver was leaning out the window and shooting a gun in the air. He could have just as easily been shooting a gun at us.”
Chauffeured and likely maskless through a hellhole of his own creation. Marie Antionette at least offered cake.

What I like about Musk other than his remarkable innovations and market orientation is his CV is on one page.
Back in the day, I would probably have to go through a dozen or so CV's to select individuals for positions in my company. A lot of the entry level engineering positions would have recent grads or post grads with 3 or 4 pages of CV. Little work experience except for their paper route when a kid and packing groceries at the local A&P.
But a guy like Musk, who has started 4 different companies, has both degrees in economics and a Wharton MBA is on one page. A lesson evryone whether 25 years experience of just joining the work force should emulate. Nothing more boring and less impressionistic than to read someone's 4 page CV. IOW's CV's are not for bragging but for showing your future employer you can get to the facts quickly and surmise.

Well, don't overlook Watergate in the mix as well for the college kids vs. hard hat era. Distrust skyrocketed-- then became permanently rooted after the Pentagon Papers and Watergate times.
The real problem w/t D's is classic, self-destructive overreach. Not every proposal is completely wrong headed and some merit consideration and debate-- but the extremes have drowned out and killed any chance of that as they foster open borders for illegals and then wall off the Capitol inhibiting access by U.S. citizens at the same time.
"Checking off boxes" to fulfill quotas for officeholders rather than hiring competent individuals is an incredibly stupid policy as well. Just look at his VP choice for starts. Caramel colored, female... so multiple boxes checked -- but she's as useless as a flat tire.
An old, incredibly incompetent, Peter Principled swamp creature- still w/a senator's mindset and never was POTUS timber- is at the helm of the Ship of State. Captain Peachfuzz would have been a better choice.
Just look around your own home and see what you have from 1972. Biden was elected a U.S. senator a month before the last Apollo moonshot with three young astronauts aboard. Two of them- Gene Cernan and Ron Evans- are now dead. Still have a Pet Rock? A Polaroid SX-70? Howzabout a Betamax, Ford Pinto and Levi elephant bell bottoms? All from Joe's time.Like his record player.
Northeasterners w/a finger in the wind [choose your digit carefully ;-)] were keenly aware of the President Plagiarist's incompetence from the early 1970s on. Friend of banks, Delaware became a drop box for CC bills and assorted [and sordid] firms.
In 1988 a more responsible press corps literally ran him out of the presidential race for the laziness of stealing words from others- PLAGIARISM- something any journalist today would get fired over-- along w/lying about his personal background and deeds. today, the give him a pass which says more about the 'fakery' of news now.
Big difference, too, between the P.T. Barnum-styled hype from a pitchman/showman like Trump and the sinister, deliberate lying by a 45 year swamp creature from Wilmington. (Or is it Scranton this week.-- Where did you park your 18-wheeler, Joe?!]
Face it. He's a bum. Always was. And still is.
And the train wreck is coming-- and damn well deserved.
Well done, 'Amtrak Joe.'

Listening to our "all news" station this evening I turned it off as soon as they began re-hashing January 6. The Leftists are desperate for something, anything to con the rubes so they don't pay more attention to the Incredible Biden Fiasco.
Kammy Harris has been stepping in feces pretty much every day as well. Manchin and Sinema are, I would imagine, completely disgusted with the party.
And a loony left candidate, Karen Bass, is leading in the LA mayor's race. Fresno and San Jose are getting blacked out and there isn't even a huge surge in demand for power.
Half the Seattle PD are set to be fired for not getting vaccinated and a very large portion of our line troops are not getting it yet either. What could go wrong?
Somehow and rather amazingly Joe is bringing the country together, but not the way he expected.
Pelosi met with the Pope yesterday and neither of them were struck by lightning. But she's wobbling more and more and may just keel over one of these days. That would really throw a monkey wrench into the bastid's plans. A guy can hope.
So buckle up for the week. You never know what insane stupidity these apparatchiks may come up with next.

M: Gold hasn't been priced at $600/oz., literally in years if not decades. Have had some old pieces purchased in 1968 when it was only $42/oz. So we've kedpt track of it. Toward the end of the CArter years it got cose to $2000- in 1980 dollars.
It is hovering around $1800/oz these days.

'Listening to our "all news" station this evening I turned it off as soon as they began re-hashing January 6.'
January 6 has been fermenting for decades. Anything could have got that kettle boiling. 'The Royalists' just don't get it.
Republicans stormed the castle in January; Democrats stormed the Throne Room in October.
It's crap like abandoning $85 billion in weapons, selling aircraft carriers for a penny a piece and then shaking down taxpayers for more loot to give away-- leaving the borders wide open for illegal entry while at the same time inhibiting access by citizens to the Capitol, etc., etc, all the goofy moves paid for on Uncle Sam's credit card-- it's that which fuels populism. They go on vacation [they were out for a month in Sept., in Aug., back in Sept., and now off again] then set up more brinkmanship in December- again. It's a swamp where 100% is 90%; wherw $2000 is $1400; where a guy lies about driving 18-wheelers and a woman brags they have to pass a bill first to then read what's in it.
Citizens are tired of the BS from both these parties run by very old people, so entrenched, they never know when to leave the stage. Remember when $15-a-pint-ice-cream-eating Nancy kept saying 'He's impeached! He's impeached!'-- as if that meant something any more?? It may to old farts like her- it just doesn't anymore to regular people-- as both parties have cheapened the power and impact of it over the past 30 years.
These people have to go. That's the core message and by luck, chance and timing, Trump just happened to show up to carry the populist banner. The GOP ran a menu of 15 weenies and a T-bone- albeit a tad fatty; and the electorate passed on the pork and went with the steak. And when Trump's gone, another will emerge to pick up the banner. 'The powers that be' just don't get it. But "folks" like Ashli Babbitt sure did.

Iggy- The CA power grid sucks. A little wind, they shut down. Some rain- they turn the power off. Just so they won't be sued for lack of maintanence. Every time they do it it damages appliance and ruins frozen and chilled food. By doing it over and over, they eventually blew out a TV set and a refrigerator circuit board, costing $$$$. Worst power grid ever is in CA. Makes Texas look superb.

the delta house jamboree, charlie cheetah was up on that stupid ploy, they shot down ashlee babbit like a dog, they probably snuffed out rosalyn boyland (then they cried crocodile tears at carlos slims over it) this isn't a game disco, esto son los comites de defensa de la revolucion, bloc committees they are turning our school boards into,
my local fishwrap was amused that desantis even mentioned it, they were all for commissar haugen's minitrue scrub,

if the titanic had run at normal speed, like most freighters going down the suez, they would have avoided the iceberg entirely, this is the meaning of hubris

Dave Chappelle Is Right, Isn't He?
The comedian defends reality. Which is currently under siege.
Andrew Sullivan
"Chappelle’s final Netflix special, “The Closer,” is a classic. Far from being outdated, it’s slightly ahead of its time, as the pushback against wokeness gains traction. It is extremely funny, a bit meta, monumentally mischievous, and I sat with another homo through the whole thing, stoned, laughing our asses off — especially when he made fun of us. The way the elite media portrays us, you’d think every member of the BLT community is so fragile we cannot laugh at ourselves. It doesn’t occur to them that, for many of us, Chappelle is a breath of honest air, doing what every comic should do: take aim at every suffocating piety of the powers that be — including the increasingly weird 2SLGBTQQIA+ mafia — and detonating them all."

chapelle has been devastatingly funny on occasion, he doesn't always get it right, but who does, I thought when he went on sabattical in south africa, he had lost his mind,
sullivan fails the orwell test, much less muggeridge and ends up as syme, same with maher,

DCSCA,
On the carriers:
per Wiki
Kitty Hawk CV-63 was commissioned on 29 April 1961 and decommissioned on 12 May 2009.
John F. Kennedy CV-67 was commissioned on 7 September 1968 and decommissioned on 23 March 2007.
I don't have a problem with them being scrapped. They've been gathering dust for 12 and 14 years.
It would be nice if somebody wanted them as tourist attractions, but I assume there were no takers.

'I don't have a problem with them being scrapped. They've been gathering dust for 12 and 14 years.'
I do. Especially for a penny a ship.
Offshore housing for illegal aliens-- even sunk as artificial reefs makes for better use than scrap.

Melinda- Gold is up over 522% in 20 years as posted on that same site. It's hovering around $1800/oz.
The $600 figure is not only an absurdity, it's quite dated if sourced to precious metal values.

During Fleet week a few years back I had the honor of being a guest on the JFK in New York harbor. They ferried us out and we got to inspect the ship, the aircraft, the full monty. They even had Marine snipers dressed up in their "silly" suits.
I was with my friend who owned the NY Waterway ferry system and his buddy, a guy named Yogi Berra:)

I was talking about the price, then, as you were. I said nothing about current pricing. Enough from me on that.

--Iggy- The CA power grid sucks. --
It does. My point was to correct the seeming misapprehension that the current brown/blackouts were due to demand exceeding supply rather than a weather event related to fire risk.

So CA power cuts not related to lower water levels on hydro? Or just not the cause yet?

Georgia plane crash kills CEO, three others: 'It happened pretty fast' https://nypost.com/2021/10/10/tragic-georgia-plane-crash-kills-ceo-three-others/
Jonathan Rosen, 47, the chief executive of Entaire Global Companies, was the pilot of the single-engine Cessna P210N when it went down and burst into flames Friday afternoon at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, FOX 5 of Atlanta reported.

--Iggy, is this real????--
It is real in that it actually happened. It is not real in the sense that it does not obtain its rationale from the real world, common sense or sanity.
The camel's vertebrae grow wobblier.

--So CA power cuts not related to lower water levels on hydro? Or just not the cause yet?--
Wholly due to the red flag warning today and tomorrow. Temps are much lower than last summer so demand is way down, more than any drop in supply. And the power interruptions are very narrow and don't effect too many people.
CA's real test [that it will fail] is if and when the regional suppliers it relies on in times of need follow it in its insane pursuit of "green" energy. Those regions will also lose their excess reserves for high demand periods and then CA will be powered by its magical thinking, which will either make for some long hot summers, long cold winters and/or a large bonfire in Sacramento.
