P&P- It was such a different era; security was minimal in London- only cameras were in the Tube-- you could actually touch things in museums and so forth. Ntohing was 'shielded.' Not like today. The British police were really on alert given the 'troubles' erupting then in Belfast and afraid of incidents- car bombs and such, in London-- hence their caution in the parks, too. The batteries were just odd- they used them in TV sets there-- long, rectangular and the UK Eveready packages were orange. They just didn't have any of those 6V lantern batteries in any store. Have to admit, in retrospect with 6 of them wired together on top in a 'series,' and tossed by a trash bin they would look suspicious. But at the time, we didn't think anything of it. We just 'littered.'

Davod- Back in '68 when we first moved to London, we tuned in to the BBC to watch this new show called 'Monty Python's Flying Circus'--- we thought it was going to be about airplanes. No kidding. First episode we saw STARTED with the end credits rolling and coming in sideways on the screen... so we realized this was not going to be about aircraft. It's the show we learned British slang from in about a month. So when it was discovered in the US on PBS in the 70s it was old hat to us. But brilliant comedy. Still, the very best British comedy show ever for me is still 'Fawlty Towers.' Perfectly written and never fails to bring laughter. But they had some great comedy showes- Morcombe & Wise, Marty Feldman... 'Up Pompeii' w/Frankie Howerd... some great stuff.
Jack, DCSCA, I didn't live in London but frequented the place quite often from 74-76 from Bentwaters out on the East Anglia coast. We quite often made the trip just to eat at the Hard Rock Cafe, which was the only Hard Rock in existence at the time. We could get American beer and real hamburgers there. What a treat. Security was scant in London as far as we could tell. We usually spent the night in the Bayswater area when we went there. All the blokes were friendly.
Sammy- we ate in the first Hard Rock Cafe in London when it opened up- near the London Hilton; saw Woody Allen there-- back in the days when he was funny. It was one of the few places we could get American beer and American-styled cheeseburgers w/fries. "Wimpy Bars' - the hamburger joints all over London, were just horrible; greasy little places w/lousy burgers-- but all we could find most of the time.
Near my HS in Knightsbridge close to Harrod's they opened up a then new restaurant called "The Great American Disaster" which served American-styled cheeseburgers, fries, drinks and such in plastic baskets. It was great food and only about $2 or $3 for lunch then. Believe it is still there.
Hard to believe this now, but the ONLY McDonald's in Europe at the time was in Paris on the Champs-Élysées-- and the French really put up a fight against it opening there, too, as they thought a lousy American fast food place would ruin the famed boulevard.
I visited London in March of 69 carrying my infant son around everywhere. (He was a really good baby at 5 months old, except for letting out a huge cry which echoed all through Westminster Abbey. LOL!)
I also remember being able to walk right up to the Rosetta Stone and touch it!

Republican and former Marine.
Just think, if those ideological conservative buttholes and their Lincoln Project cohorts had put their faux ‘law & order’ moralizing objections to his persona aside and voted for Trump a year ago, they'd only have three more years of his highly entertaining show — inflation would be minimal, gasoline and food affordable, the ports unclogged, vaccines would be a matter of choice, not authoritarian mandates; $85 billion of military equipment would not have been abandoned to the enemy; there’d have been no January 6; Ashli Babbitt, those Capitol cops and 13 brave American military personnel would still be alive and scores more still with their limbs… America still would be greater than ever telling the world how to eat the cabbage– and you’d have been thoroughly entertained.
But no. The ideologues whined about ‘principles’ dontcha know… morals.. impeachments... and no more mean tweets.
Davod- When 'All In The Family' was first aired in the UK, they'd run it back to back w/'Till Death Do Us Part'- which Norman Lear ripped off to create the Bunker show-- and the scripts were virtually identical, just the locales different.
DCSCA, yeah, we never touched those things they called hamburgers. They looked like dogfood sizzling in a lake of grease and smelled the same. But then the British weren't known for their food.
Well the McDonalds in Paris at least made the movies with John Travolta and Samuel Jackson talking about the "Royale with Cheese" in Pulp Fiction. They had one at the Frankfurt airport by the mid to late 70's. They called the quarter pounder the "Viertelpfünder".

How tough is it for Democrats tonight? A write in candidate is defeating Socialist India Walton for Buffalo, NY mayor. To the companies that bow to the social justice warriors on Twitter pay attention, they are not the majority.
MissMarple2- It should be tough for the turncoat ideologues and Lincoln Project types who abaondoned their party's president because they didn't like his persona, too.
They're worse than the 50 year Biden swamper. This has been festering for decades and is finally winning over people at the local level.
The Lincoln Project didn’t abandon DJT because they didn’t like his persona.
It was because they stopped getting paid.
Their glaring loss of actually having any real influence to begin with being the original problem made them an easy pick up for Pierre for them to switch jerseys as the keyboard mercenaries they always were.
What do you say to somebody who quit the Republican Party several years ago yet tweets:
"I don’t see DeSantis and Youngkin as the same type of candidate, at all. DeSantis is a far more transparent example of the “pass dumb policies to make Trumpy populists go rah rah” style pandering piece of garbage politician. He revolts me, while I find Youngkin palatable."
Back in April, Major League Baseball decided to punish Atlanta by moving the 2021 All-Star game out of the city in response to a Georgia voting law signed into law by Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) in March.
Memo to PC Stacey Abrams and MLB management cowards: FU.
Atlanta Braves win 2021 World Series in Game Six, 7-0 over Houston Astros.
“All of the people on MSNBC convincing themselves that all of these VA voters — who voted for Biden a year ago! — are idiots, racists, and/or dupes is pretty wild.” – Jonah Goldberg.
It takes a dupe to know a dupe, eh Wailer?
Jonah Goldberg is a Never-trumper and wholly irrelevant. He proposes that the best way to fix "the now-terminally “Trumpified” GOP" as he calls it- is to establish a competitive third party that would serve either to purge the Republicans of their “flaws” [do you feel flawed voting for Trump??!!] via the existing primary process or to hand power to their opponents until they are finally encouraged to do better.
he *only* job of news anchors is to provide clarity, information and calm.
Watching bewildered, confused and rattled anchors question why numbers keep flying around and blue counties refuse to turn in their votes just gives viewers PTSD that the entire system is fraudulent.
Went to the polls in Hackensack, NJ, and was surprised to see that they had dumped the old paper poll books for an electronic poll book.
In NJ you don't have to show ID to vote. Just state your name and they do a look-up in the poll books. Pages get turned and a finger points. "Is this you?" "Yeah." "Sign here [indicating the poll book]." Then you sign a ballot ticket and they tear off the corresponding numbered stub off the bottom for you to present at the voting booth.
This year, with the new electronic poll book, the first step is to sign a tablet with a disposable stylus. The stylus didn't work. "Try using your finger."
Yeah, that worked. Even more illegible than my usual signature with the tablet at a 45 degree angle and my finger slipping off the tablet twice. Then do the same with the ballot ticket as before.
The ACLU and LWV claimed an issue with the voting machines and sought to have voting extended to 9:30 PM instead of the 8:00 PM close. They lost.
So if you hear anything about voting machine issues in NJ affecting the vote it was the new electronic poll book system instead. The voting machines were the same as before.
Without doing more research, I presume that all NJ counties were using the new electronic poll book system and nobody was familiar with it.
I'm looking at three different gubernatorial election result trackers for NJ and they are driving me nuts.
Jack Ciattarelli (GOP) leads all of them still, but by differing amounts.
I've refreshed everything and they've come into alignment with him ahead by 1,697 votes.
I have no idea what vote is still outstanding and where. I never believed the polls that had Ciattarelli down by 11%. It was just a feeling. I never would have predicted that he would be in the lead this late at night.
As the Brits might say I am gobsmacked. This is not a typical NJ election.
Murphy may still pull this out in the end, but in looking at my home county, Bergen County, which has an overwhelming democratic voter advantage, the results are a rout.
According to this Star-Ledger sponsored spreadsheet, with all precincts reporting, whatever that means, the following results are reported:
The incumbent democratic Sheriff has lost.
The incumbent democratic County Clerk has lost.
The incumbent democratic County Surrogate has lost.
Two republicans have beaten democrats for County Commissioner seats.
It just boggles the mind. My local Gannett paper repeatedly mentioned that the republican Sheriff candidate had been indicted, earlier this year, for allegedly, as police chief in his town, of illegally providing police escorts for funerals for a funeral home he had an interest in. And that Bridget Kelly, the republican County Clerk candidate, was a central character in Chris Christie's "Bridgegate" conspiracy.
N.J. election 2021: N.J. governor race still too close to call. Murphy, Ciattarelli waiting for all votes to be counted.
"Just after 2:30 a.m., with 87% of the vote in, Ciattarelli was leading Murphy by about 1,600 votes, according to totals from the Associated Press. Each candidates were carrying about 49.6% of the vote at that time.
But thousands of votes — especially from Democratic-leaning areas — have yet to be counted. It’s unclear how many are vote-by-mail or provisional ballots that still have to be tallied."
Those "uncounted" votes could put Murphy over the top, but if Bergen County is an indicator, the democratic bastions are under-performing.
"Murphy — who is seeking a second term after pushing the state in a more progressive direction — also had the advantage of registered Democrats outnumbering Republicans by more than 1 million in New Jersey, a state that has become increasingly bluer in recent years."
Well, right now, depending on the counts of voters in unknown categories of votes cast outside of in-person votes, apparently about 999,000 democratic voters stayed home. Or some of them defected.
I expected to be up late wondering about the Virginia results and willing to concede that, well, NJ is a lost cause. Surprise!
The split-screen image of a Youngkin delivering his upbeat victory speech as the stoop-shouldered, darkly overcoated Biden exited AF1 after predicting a win before wheels up in Scotland said it all.
Virginia’s Youngkin follows the pattern Trump followed per my ol’college thesis about a major party nominating businessmen to seek office- a businessman w/t governorship win as his initial elected office. No previous government experience. It’s more hard data indicating ‘Pragmatic Populism’ is alive and thriving.
There will be more of these ‘upsets’ to the traditional old party 'swamp set' in cycles to come.
If the Dems had won in Va & NJ while Biden is under water that would be obvious fraud. Too obvious. And that is probably whiny they didn’t try anydirty tricks. Rather save those tricks for national elections with lots of mail in shenanigans.
Jack, it’s also a lot easier to hide the cheating when there are 435 House races, 34 Senate races, and 20+ Governors races all going on at once, compared to yesterday when there were only two races of note in the whole country.
Let's go Braves!

DCSCA-
The Lincoln Project didn’t abandon DJT because they didn’t like his persona.
It was because they stopped getting paid.
Their glaring loss of actually having any real influence to begin with being the original problem made them an easy pick up for Pierre for them to switch jerseys as the keyboard mercenaries they always were.
Exposed.
And they don’t even know it.
Yet.

‘Dumb policies?’ It’s Trump’s GOP now. ‘Pragmatic Populism’ rules.
This tweeter ought to start their own 'whinery'-- for those who serve bitter dregs.

Back in April, Major League Baseball decided to punish Atlanta by moving the 2021 All-Star game out of the city in response to a Georgia voting law signed into law by Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) in March.

Whine & dregs.
Piss on him.

Posted by: jim nj | November 03, 2021 at 02:09 AM
As the Brits might say I am gobsmacked. This is not a typical NJ election.
Murphy may still pull this out in the end, but in looking at my home county, Bergen County, which has an overwhelming democratic voter advantage, the results are a rout.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vTL_6lp1EpLI5_3SK8CBT2072RbCywjlz_SuJ_LFmntqNt6J-MBTtdJLaLrFGSuDIThFJx6hN_gOSFa/pubhtml
If this holds it is truly a wild result.

This was just updated:
https://www.nj.com/politics/2021/11/nj-election-2021-nj-governor-race-still-too-close-to-call-murphy-ciattarelli-waiting-for-all-votes-to-be-counted.html
N.J. election 2021: N.J. governor race still too close to call.

Wrong again, Joe.

Common people. I'd do this this. I'd do that.
(Murphy) At the end, "I’m pretty sure this is not my pen.”
Even Eddie Murphy couldn't have gotten away with this lame-ass joke. Phil Murphy doing comedy was a stupid concept.
Posted by: jim nj | November 03, 2021 at 03:39 AM
Virginia’s Youngkin follows the pattern Trump followed per my ol’college thesis about a major party nominating businessmen to seek office- a businessman w/t governorship win as his initial elected office. No previous government experience. It’s more hard data indicating ‘Pragmatic Populism’ is alive and thriving.
There will be more of these ‘upsets’ to the traditional old party 'swamp set' in cycles to come.

Jack, it’s also a lot easier to hide the cheating when there are 435 House races, 34 Senate races, and 20+ Governors races all going on at once, compared to yesterday when there were only two races of note in the whole country.
