Thomas Edsall does NOT title his latest essay "What's The Matter With The Democrats?". He prefers an air horn:
Democrats Shouldn’t Panic. They Should Go Into Shock.
No surprises here - 2022 looks like a Red Storm Rising / Blue Wave Goodbye election. Both history and current events are against the Dems:
The rise of inflation, supply chain shortages, a surge in illegal border crossings, the persistence of Covid, mayhem in Afghanistan and the uproar over “critical race theory” — all of these developments, individually and collectively, have taken their toll on President Biden and Democratic candidates, so much so that Democrats are now the underdogs going into 2022 and possibly 2024.
But a year is a long time and there is still a lot of football to be played. And then basketball, and then a World Series.
I think you were thinking of the Finnish sniper, Simo Hayha. He killed over 500 Russians in the Winter War.

Evergrande’s fire sale continues as founder Hui Ka-yan disposes of corporate and personal assets to avert defaulting on debt
"Hui Ka-yan, founder and chairman of China Evergrande Group, has stepped up the disposal of his corporate and personal assets to help the world’s most indebted developer stave off defaults as the company faces US$366 million of interest payments this year.
That included the Dutch electric motor maker e-Traction, sold last week to Saietta Group based in the UK last week for €2 million (US$2.3 million), a staggering 97 per cent discount on the March 2019 purchase price of 500 million yuan (US$78.4 million)."

Walmart and Target clash with investors over strategy to keep prices low despite inflation
"Walmart and Target put up strong third-quarter performances this week, beat Wall Street’s expectations and spoke of holiday shoppers already starting to splurge on gifts and gatherings this season. Yet the investor response was swift: A brutal sell-off.
Target shares closed down about 5% Wednesday. Walmart closed down nearly 3% on Tuesday, after its earnings report. Shares continued to drop Wednesday, erasing all its gains year-to-date.
The two sides are at odds on the retailers’ strategy of absorbing some of the rising costs of shipping, labor and materials rather than passing them on to customers with higher prices. Both Walmart CEO Doug McMillon and Target CEO Brian Cornell have drawn a clear line. Their strategy: Keep prices low in a bid for customer loyalty — even if it means a hit to profits."
I think that's a smart move.

“Then Cleanor the Arcadian, being the eldest of the generals, made answer that they would die sooner than give up their arms. And Proxenus the Theban said: “For my part, Phalinus, I wonder whether the King is asking for our arms on the assumption that he is victorious, or simply as gifts, on the assumption that we are his friends. For if he asks for them as victor, why need he ask for them, instead of coming and taking them? But if he desires to get them by persuasion, let him set forth what the soldiers will receive in case they do him this favour.” In reply to this Phalinus said: “The King believes that he is victor because he has slain Cyrus. For who is there now who is contending against him for his realm? Further, he believes that you also are his because he has you in the middle of his country, enclosed by impassable rivers, and because he can bring against you a multitude of men so great that you could not slay them even if he were to put them in your hands.” Then Theopompus, an Athenian, said: “Phalinus, at this moment, as you see for yourself, we have no other possession save arms and valour. Now if we keep our arms, we imagine that we can make use of our valour also, but if we give them up, that we shall likewise be deprived of our lives. Do not suppose, therefore, that we shall give up to you the only possessions that we have; rather, with these we shall do battle against you for your possessions as well.”—Xenophon, ‘Anabasis’
