OK, Kyle Rittenhouse was found Not Guilty on all the major charges as well as all the minor ones. One more Team Blue show trial ends up in rubble and Robby Soave of Reason pokes at the wreckage (Yes, I am having a George Zimmerman flashback.) Do these people think self-defense should be illegal if the attacker fails to bring a gun to what turns into a gunfight? Not how it works.
PILING ON: I am having a hard time picking my favorite quote from the Times wishcasting. I love this from the DA:
“Certainly, issues regarding the privilege of self-defense remain highly contentious in our current times,” said Mr. Graveley..."
"Privilege" of self-defense?!? Well, maybe-ish, in the sense that there are restrictions on self-defense rights. But most rights have some limits. Eg, we don't talk about the 'privilege' of a free press even though we have laws against libel.
Well. I thought that comment would take the prize but this was strong competition:
But some prosecution witnesses gave complex accounts that were not wholly favorable to the prosecution’s case.
Do tell. C'mon, Times readers have seen the verdict - now the reporter is easing them out of the cocoon!
Richie McGinniss, a videographer for a conservative news and opinion site, witnessed the first shooting, when Mr. Rittenhouse shot and killed Joseph Rosenbaum, who had chased him into a parking lot and was rushing at him.
Mr. McGinniss gave the defense a crucial piece of testimony: He said he saw Mr. Rosenbaum lunge at Mr. Rittenhouse and reach for the barrel of Mr. Rittenhouse’s rifle.
“He threw his momentum toward the weapon,” Mr. McGinnis said of Mr. Rosenbaum.
That appeared to support Mr. Rittenhouse’s emotional testimony about his state of mind on Aug. 25, 2020, the night of the shooting. “If I would have let Mr. Rosenbaum take my firearm from me, he would have used it and killed me with it, and probably killed more people,” Mr. Rittenhouse said on the stand.
Other prosecution witnesses also gave testimony that helped the defense.
Gaige Grosskreutz, the only one of the three men Mr. Rittenhouse shot who survived, testified that he chased Mr. Rittenhouse after Mr. Rosenbaum was shot because he “thought that the defendant was an active shooter.” Mr. Grosskreutz, an emergency medical technician, was armed with a handgun, which he took out.
Mr. Grosskreutz described the encounter as he was shown photos that captured him pointing his gun at Mr. Rittenhouse, who shot him in the arm.
“It wasn’t until you pointed your gun at him, advanced on him with your gun — now your hands down, pointed at him — that he fired, right?” Corey Chirafisi, a defense lawyer, asked.
“Correct,” Mr. Grosskreutz replied.
The jurors saw video showing the third victim, Anthony Huber, hitting Mr. Rittenhouse with a skateboard before Mr. Rittenhouse shot and killed him. The video gave the defense added fodder for the self-defense argument.
Hello Melinda. You are correct.
We need to have lunch soon!! Ok?

Hi Gus,
Weird stuff here. I can't post here what I just posted on JOM2 about Hackensack's redevelopment.
I thought the URLs for the two new buildings might be the issue so I deleted them. that didn't work either.
Posted by: jim nj | November 21, 2021 at 12:32 AM
Jim, I read your post on JOM dos. Good stuff.
The world I grew up in.....AMERICA, Scotland for a few years after my Fathers death, then back to AMERICA, is/was designed by some of the most MORAL and INTELLIGENT PATRIOTS to ever exist.
MY HUMBLE OPINION.
Jim, (both my Dad's and my Father in Laws name), I recall in my repatriated days back in the U.S, in the LATE 60'S, how incredibly proud I was (am) to be a UNITED STATES born citizen. AS A KID JIM.
I am still the same AMERICAN BOY to this day.
Mom and original FATHER, both buried at ARLINGTON. Father, and my DAD (only father I ever knew) USAF Veterans. My youngest brother a decorated USAF PILOT/OFFICER/FORMER NON-COM SPEC OPS USAF. My oldest NEPHEW wounded 2004 USMC ANBAR IRAG. My NIECE HANNAH, newly minted LT and graduate of the UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ACADEMY, top 5% of her class MAY 27, 2021. My GOD DAUGHTER. Soon to fly a fighter jet. Masters in AEROSPACE ENGINEERING. As a kid here in Wauwatosa Wisconsin, I absolutely LOVED the INDEPNDENCE DAY JULY 4 PARADE. I don't know how or why, but I knew that being an AMERICAN was PRECIOUS. I still do.
We can turn this around.

So as I said elsewhere.
In an undisclosed location, where I live, a bunch of new apartments opened over the last two years. Maybe 750, or so, of them.
Two more, with 613 apartments, opened this month.

I can't figure out what was wrong with my post that typhuspad objected to.
Posted by: jim nj | November 21, 2021 at 12:43 AM
1300 plus apartments is progress. Consider that BIDEN'S FILTH, allowed dead beats to not pay their leases. We have a great JOM friend, who got screwed by this.
Posted by: GUS | November 21, 2021 at 12:44 AM
Jim, on a planet far far away, the opening of those two complexes, would be FANTASTIC.
HOW IS THAT SUSTAINED. Where do the dollars come from in this RIDICULOUS ECONOMY??

Gus,
I have been absolutely amazed at the level of new apartment construction in Hackensack.
These projects were envisioned a few years ago. All of them are being built with PILOT agreements. The banks love those.
I think that the Covid timing helped fill the first few buildings after they opened. Any hesitancy about going forward with the other projects was lost when the first projects succeeded.

Disjointed, perhaps
Gus,
Yeah, this is all private money. Hackensack isn't going the condemnation route that disgusts me. They just decided that the Main Street corridor is in need of redevelopment. So they re-zoned it. And they created redevelopment plans that showed that if you can acquire and consolidate these certain properties that instead of a one or two story property you can go much taller.
There's none of the graft or favoritism involved with typical redevelopment plans that often left empty lots for decades after city condemnation.
It just indicates to current owners that their one or two story building is economically obsolescent. A guy/gal that owns an empty storefront can redevelop it themselves or sell to a better financed developer at a good price

Redevelopment, at least around here, follows patterns. When I was growing up it was not unusual to have two or three competing gas stations at a major intersection.
Many years later it was not unusual to see those gas stations torn down to be replaced by competing bank branches.
Posted by: jim nj | November 21, 2021 at 02:24 AM
Now the banks are torn down for competing Starbucks.

Another early rise. Seems I can't sleep past 0300hrs.
Have a CatScan tomorrow then I will ask my Medico what she and I can do to reset my sleep clock. What happens is that I keep nodding off for a few seconds at a time until sun comes up, I feed the dogs and then go outside into the sunshine and fresh ocean breeze.

Sleep hygiene:
Number one--stop worrying about waking up.
The anxiety about falling back asleep keeps your brain revved up. Que sera, sera.
You can take a nap if you need to.
Go outside as as soon as it gets light and stay out for at least an hour, preferably moving. Do that again midday, and at four. Even if overcast, the light outside is far more intense than indoors. No sunglasses. Your pineal gland needs to get activated.
No screens after six pm.
No alcohol after three pm.
Hot bath or shower around eight.
Melatonin at seven. Dose---people start at one mg; the Covid protocol I follow has me taking ten mgs.
Try it for a week.
If that doesn't work, stop consuming alcohol totally. (Yes, truly drastic. You may decide you can live with napping. ;-))
Hope this does the trick.

PS--have you gone paleo/keto lately? That greatly reduces some people's sleep needs, reportedly.

I belong to a FB group that is all about The Hamptons, primarily, Southampton and Watermill. It's almost a virtual life in the village.
Its like you never left but hard to keep up with all the changes. Our members are tranplants, like to California, Florida, Texas, etc. The nostalgia gets weepy during the Christmas season, since SH is a Christmas village with the lights and decorations.

Buckeye, I get up at four on work days as we need to be in by 5:40 to get the blocks in and cases in the OR for our seven am cut times. I like to have three cups of coffee and read a bit before walking out the door.
Blocks greatly reduce narcotic needs; get our colon patients our 3 days earlier!
That's been about ten years. So--- I almost never sleep past 6.
Back in the day--before we let it all go to hell, and had these early starts, and became full time data entry/billing clerks--I left the house at 6:45 for the 7:30 in OR (so more like 8:00 cut) cases.
Things change...

Indianapolis is completing the inner loop and access to it frm I65, I70, and I74. They got state and federal money for the project and have bulldozed most of the buildings and clear cut all the trees along the route. It is horrible looking, very bleak.
I got a look at it when my son brought me to his house, and I honestly don’t recognize much of the west side.

I have a slight problem with one portion of "Kyle's Law" - if a prosecutor is held personally liable there will be few prosecutions of murder because every guy is going to plead self-defense and if the choice is between public safety and the DA's public pension I think we know which side the DA will come down on.
I'd love to see creeps like Binger held accountable but am not sure there is a way to do so without suboptimal unintended consequences.

Always a danger in such things, Iggy. Perhaps disbarment by bar associations doing their jobs and civil suits may be the only recourse.

Kamel Toe;
--"Today's verdict speaks for itself. I've spent a majority of my career working to make our criminal justice system more equitable. It's clear, there's still a lot more work to do."--
I'm trying to understand just how this "equitable" justice system is supposed to work.
As I understand racial equity elsewhere, whites are punished and blacks rewarded to compensate for past inequality.
If we grant those specious arguments in the criminal justice system, seems to me the only ways to make up for past discrimination is for a certain quota of innocent white defendants to be convicted anyway or for a certain number [all?] black defendants to be declared innocent before trial and released. So, until our systemically racist society is no longer racist, violent black criminals will continue to get the little card with the old white guy in stripes getting the boot or flying out of the cage, right?
Wonder if people living in the Naval Observatory or Kendi's neighborhood will be paying the price for achieving "equity".

Clarice,
Thank you for leading with Evers as being responsible for the deaths of the Antefa scum in Kenosha. There is a Dem pol responsible for the cheering glow of every burning Blue Hell across the country and specific identification of the Dem official responsible for implementing Biden's Burn Down Better policy is helpful.
Hopefully the voters of Wisconsin will give Evers the time to reflect on his poor decisions following his defeat in November next year.
