Just a comment on anonamom's sleep hygiene recommendation (previous thread.) I've adopted the light protocol (first thing in the morning - outside for 15-30 minutes), during the day as much natural light as possible, end of day another 15 minutes or so as sun is setting. This has made a tremendous difference in my sleep.

I believe I've shared this before but if you are interested in why this works, here is a link to Andrew Huberman's excellent discussion of the research into how light affects our sleep. He is a neuroscientist and professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Last week I had some trouble sleeping which I never have. (Usually I read or do acrostics until I'm tired enough.) I think it was because of the trial which really kept me stirred up and my new kitten which should arrive tomorrow.

Most nights I sleep 6 hours, which evidently is enough. But for the past 6 months at least I almost invariably wake up after 3-4 hours, go back to sleep, wake up after another 1-2 hours, go back to sleep, wake up after another hour. It doesn't seem to depend on anything, but I try not to eat or drink at least 3 hours before going to sleep, and usually take a melatonin. No trouble falling asleep, just staying asleep uninterrupted. Just an annoyance.

Each time I awaken I find I fall asleep faster if I get up and have a small drink of water. A friend told me that bit of folk wisdom that one can get dehydrated overnight. It seems to work.

I used to take, every now and then, either a benadryl or half an ambien, but as I mentioned a few weeks ago, benadryl is not recommended for people over 65 (which I'm not yet) and I don't like taking ambien though it seems very benign and effective.

All just part of getting older I guess.

41 years ago I took my first diversity and EEO/AA training. What it actuallly did, since I was on a dynamic forward looking project was push to the corner of another time to teach and learn. Project completion came first.

But it didn't stop some of our weaker brothers and sisters to take advantage of this new formality and demand that we get with the training post-haste. This is when and where we found out how OSHA and the EEO/AA folks were out there asking workers to come forward with any complaints about how it was being applied to them.

As a manager with about 50 professional direct-reports it gave me an additional 50 hours a week of administration and paperwork.

Having liquid Benadryl in a kitchen cupboard or medicine cabinet as part of available first aid for stings is a my drug of choice for a fast acting antihistamine.
The dementia association is from long term use, and related to its anticholinergic effect, so seen with other drugs in that class as well.
No one needs to be concerned about taking it occasionally.

In 2008, Indiana University School of Medicine geriatrician Malaz Boustani developed the anticholinergic cognitive burden scale, which ranks these drugs according to the severity of their effects on the mind. It’s a good idea to steer clear of the drugs with high ACB scores, meaning those with scores of 3.
