Merry Christmas all! I just want to share my Christmas Earworm: the late, great Jim Croce's "I Got A Name", specifically
"Like the pine trees linin' the windin' road
I've got a name, I've got a name..."
Pine tress typically have names? Who names their pine trees? And what is the name of the one in my living room - Jeweled? What is Croce's real name - homo sapiens?
So many questions. Whatev.
And please remember the Holiday message during this OMGicron season - think positive and test negative!

A VISIT FROM ST. NICHOLAS
BY CLEMENT CLARKE MOORE
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds;
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave a lustre of midday to objects below,
When what to my wondering eyes did appear,
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer,
With a little old driver so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the housetop the coursers they flew
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too—
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight—
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Another one, I remember from my University days:
Christmas Trees
BY ROBERT FROST
(A Christmas Circular Letter)
The city had withdrawn into itself
And left at last the country to the country;
When between whirls of snow not come to lie
And whirls of foliage > yet laid, there drove
A stranger to our yard, who looked the city,
Yet did in country fashion in that there
He sat and waited till he drew us out
A-buttoning coats to ask him who he was.
He proved to be the city come again
To look for something it had left behind
And could not do without and keep its Christmas.
He asked if I would sell my Christmas trees;
My woods—the young fir balsams like a place
Where houses all are churches and have spires.
I hadn’t thought of them as Christmas Trees.
I doubt if I was tempted for a moment
To sell them off their feet to go in cars
And leave the slope behind the house all bare,
Where the sun shines now no warmer than the moon.
I’d hate to have them know it if I was.
Yet more I’d hate to hold my trees except
As others hold theirs or refuse for them,
Beyond the time of profitable growth,
The trial by market everything must come to.
I dallied so much with the thought of selling.
Then whether from mistaken courtesy
And fear of seeming short of speech, or whether
From hope of hearing good of what was mine, I said,
“There aren’t enough to be worth while.”
“I could soon tell how many they would cut,
You let me look them over.”
“You could look.
But don’t expect I’m going to let you have them.”
Pasture they spring in, some in clumps too close
That lop each other of boughs, but not a few
Quite solitary and having equal boughs
All round and round. The latter he nodded “Yes” to,
Or paused to say beneath some lovelier one,
With a buyer’s moderation, “That would do.”
I thought so too, but wasn’t there to say so.
We climbed the pasture on the south, crossed over,
And came down on the north. He said, “A thousand.”
“A thousand Christmas trees!—at what apiece?”
He felt some need of softening that to me:
“A thousand trees would come to thirty dollars.”
Then I was certain I had never meant
To let him have them. Never show surprise!
But thirty dollars seemed so small beside
The extent of pasture I should strip, three cents
(For that was all they figured out apiece),
Three cents so small beside the dollar friends
I should be writing to within the hour
Would pay in cities for good trees like those,
Regular vestry-trees whole Sunday Schools
Could hang enough on to pick off enough.
A thousand Christmas trees I didn’t know I had!
Worth three cents more to give away than sell,
As may be shown by a simple calculation.
Too bad I couldn’t lay one in a letter.
I can’t help wishing I could send you one,
In wishing you herewith a Merry Christmas.

Good Christmas Eve to all you JOMers.
I have a couple of birds brining in the fridge and with an overnight low of 61 tonight I'm gonna put them on the smoker in early, early morning tomorrow for our Christmas dinner tomorrow. Hoping we have a good turn out of family members.
I can't wait for the morning to come round and see my kids faces when they open their presents. I told them to expect little this year but I've bought them both gaming rigs.
I've never owned a computer that compares and that's how I make a living.
At 18 and 20 it's not quite the same as when they were little but they should be just as surprised as when they opened a Lego's set or Monster High collection.
Nerds gotta nerd.
I'm quite certain that as the IT Guy they will demand immediate set up of the rigs and that's what I'll be doing all evening tomorrow and Sunday.
On a down note though, my oldest girl up in Chicago won't be making it down to B-town to see us. She tested positive for Covid yesterday. Fully vaxed but her and her beau went to an engagement party last week. They know of 12 others who attended in the same boat.
She says she can barely tell she's even sick.
The new normal, eh?

Census Bureau says N.J. losing population at a faster clip than most other states
Well the census estimate doesn't surprise me, but there are seven states ahead of us. You can probably guess which ones. The article has a graphic and a list of the worst. And then I found this:
https://nypost.com/2021/12/22/can-new-york-reverse-its-record-setting-pandemic-era-population-drop/
Can New York reverse its record-setting pandemic-era population drop?
Citing the same census estimate. This quote was interesting:
"The new Census data cover only the national and state level, and don’t trace migrants to their destinations — but the stats provide strong hints of other states that probably gained at New York’s expense last year. New Jersey, for one, saw its average annual migrant outflow cut in half, while Pennsylvania’s usual migration losses slowed to a trickle. Connecticut gained a net 12,207 residents from other states after losing an average of nearly 22,000 per year from 2010 to 2020."
Sounds about right.

I'd never thought we'd see what happened in 2020 as far as inane policies and the deaths that resulted from them, and
2021 was BT FAR worse.
(and that is without any significant personal impact/loss.)

China’s coronavirus quarantine threatens supply chains as ‘vulnerable’ seamen forced to endure weeks of isolation
Beijing’s harsh quarantine measures are forcing hundreds of thousands of Chinese seafarers to endure weeks of isolation before they can go home
As seamen look to return for the Lunar New Year holiday, the strict rules are threatening to cause supply chain disruptions in the Pearl River Delta
Hundreds of thousands? That many? Hmm.

Pfizer antiviral pills may be risky with other medications
"The medications include, but are not limited to: blood thinners; anti-seizure medications; drugs for irregular heart rhythms, high blood pressure and high cholesterol; antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications; immunosuppressants; steroids (including inhalers); HIV treatments; and erectile dysfunction medications."
So if you have a co-morbidity you shouldn't take it. Ivermectin sounds safer to use.

Jim nj,
I won't even bother with that Pfizer pill. Several of the meds I take are on that list. Thanks for the info!
