The CDC had modified their COVID quarantine recommendations:
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials on Monday cut isolation restrictions for asymptomatic Americans who catch the coronavirus from 10 to five days, and similarly shortened the time that close contacts need to quarantine.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said the guidance is in keeping with growing evidence that people with the coronavirus are most infectious in the two days before and three days after symptoms develop.
The decision also was driven by a recent surge in COVID-19 cases, propelled by the omicron variant.
Some of this reflects staffuing issues - can't keep essetial workers at home for too long.

In a rather bizarre move, NASA has recruited a British priest to prepare the religious for the discovery of alien life as space agencies claim to be getting closer to discovering evidence that life exists outside of planet earth reports The Times.
Reverend Dr. Andrew Davison, a priest and theology professor at the University of Cambridge, is among 24 theologians who are participating in a program sponsored by NASA at the space agency's Center for Theological Inquiry (CTI) at Princeton University.
The theologians are attempting to assess how major religions would react to news of alien life being found.

In the days before the internet I would wonder about things like why the Brits called the Coolie pigtail a queue, and it’s been there on trilingual horse brush labels the whole time.
‘Queue’ means tail in French. It’s obviously a remnant of Norman times. I guess it makes a certain sense as well when you look at people standing in a line.
Bill Bryson covered the basic phenomenon of how the elite French Normans gave us the words for prepared meat like ‘mouton’ and the vulgar English the words for the animal on the hoof, like sheep.
I guess it will be interesting to see what words our elite social media CEO’s contribute to ‘American’ from Hindi.

There are a whole bunch of words like that due to the Norman French/Anglo Saxon class divide in Britain. French was considered the “language of the royal court” and in fact was the only language spoken for official business for several generations after the Norman Conquest.

So is that graph Jim posted at 12:50AM bogus and why?
Posted by: Old Lurker | December 28, 2021 at 09:00 AM
-------
here's the article again:
https://reason.com/2021/12/27/rip-pandemic-of-the-unvaccinated/?utm_medium=email
and the chart source from the article:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FHn6leqXoAUdvyq.jpg
jimmyk posted at 1PM a good explanation he found in the comments of the article as to why the chart is biased (as I claimed).
from that:
"I do believe outcomes are worse for the unvaccinated, And I'm glad to see that this graph is age adjusted. However, it is not morbidity adjusted."
I agree with this statement. The unvaccinated do have a higher rate of hospitalization than the vaccinated. Having said that I looked for the source of the chart and found no citation. I'm near certain that this is a third-party chart that was dissected 2 or 3 months ago at Alex Berensen's site. Without a source I can't be sure where I first saw it discussed. I looked last night. I looked again longer tonight.
So it's good that the chart is age-adjusted, as we would be unimpressed if old unvaccinated people were being compared to younger, presumably healthier, vaccinated young people. If the lower trend line was all composed of young vaccinated people it wouldn't speak to the efficacy of the vaccine in preventing hospitalizations.
Beyond that, as the other commenter notes, the chart should also be morbidity adjusted. It is believed that the unvaccinated do have, or may have, a higher morbidity rate to begin with. That would place them in the higher trend line.
Trying to recreate the argument as I remember it from 2 or 3 months ago:
The chart would be more accurate with three trend lines rather than two. The chart lists the unvaccinated as one group and the vaccinated as another, but the chart uses the term "fully vaccinated." As I remember it being used at the time of the prior chart "fully vaccinated" meant one Jansen or two Moderna/Pfizer vaccines and the 14 days after waiting period. A better breakdown would have been unvaccinated, fully vaccinated and partially vaccinated. The last category would allow one to wonder if not being fully vaccinated led to less vaccine efficacy or if an adverse reaction from the first vaccine required a hospitalization.
And we believe the record-keeping isn't all that great. It's not like some researcher was double-checking self-reported vaccine status in every hospitalization case. So we can see that some assumptions may have been made in constructing the chart. And we still don't know where the underlying data came from. Maybe it's accurate, maybe it isn't. Poor design or deliberate propaganda?
Hospitalizations for all causes were increasing during this period as the bans against elective surgery were increasingly eliminated. Everyone admitted to a hospital, for any reason, was tested for Covid at that point. Were they admitted for Covid, or did testing discover they also had Covid? And how sensitive were the PCR tests? And what was the financial incentive to the hospital for a "positive" test?
There were other arguments against the chart. I'm just not sure I can explain (or remember) them or even if they are germane.
But the arguments can come even earlier. Why weren't people hospitalized in the first place? Because they were fully, or partially vaccinated, or because they got effective early treatment with drug regimens prescribed by renegade doctors?

From economic miracle to mirage – will China’s GDP ever overtake the US?
Analysis: issues of governance, rising debt, Covid and property market turmoil will delay Beijing’s quest to become the global economy’s No 1
I'm reading separately that Xmas spending was up 8.5%. That's a big number. Subtract out inflation and maybe it's only up 1-2% for the year.
That's not a bad number. What the hell did people buy? Was there some substitution effect? Did people buy what was available instead of what they wanted?
Or what?
What the hell is on all those ships that haven't been able to off-load their cargo at the LA/LB seaport?
Stuff we don't need, but we would buy anyway, if available?
Like tens of thousands of artificial Christmas trees we'll buy next year?
Or what?
What if, in our zeal to outwit shipping delays, we over-ordered everything available from China?
Is there nothing left we want to order now? That would be a bummer for China.

The stunning thing to me about the article in the threadstarter is that anyone listens to the CDC anymore. I understand that CDC opinions (I refuse to dignify the opinions by calling the opinions guidance), to the extent incorporated into governmental and employer directives, need to be taken into account unless one is in full defiance mode. However, at this point in the panicdemic, I can't imagine giving CDC spewings any deference.

·
Alas poor Harry, I knew him well.
Death cannot erase what a nasty piece of work the Senator from Searchlight truly was.
Of course, my sympathies go out to the family of Harry Reid, as they would to any family that has lost a loved one. Human decency requires at least that much.
But let us not sugarcoat Reid’s career in death.
Let’s face it, when the searchlight is turned on the career of the Senator from Searchlight it becomes clear that Harry was a true scoundrel, a nasty, nasty piece of work.
Like Corn Pop, Harry was a bad dude.
It is disheartening to see and hear the tributes coming from the right side of the aisle. I understand a degree of deference is expected for a member of the Senate club, but these statements certainly seem disingenuous given Reid’s record.
Mike Lee characterized Reid as “a kind, caring friend” when, at least to conservatives, he was nothing of the sort. To anyone who opposed him, Reid was most certainly not kind, caring or a friend.
Perhaps in a defining moment of his career, Reid hid behind the Speech and Debate clause to blatantly lie about Mitt Romney’s taxes from the Senate floor during the 2012 campaign. When challenged by the media after Obama was safely home for his second term (after the Benghazi atrocity), Reid famously quipped “Well, he didn’t win, did he?”
Shameless and evil are two words that come to mind.
Mitch McConnell released a statement that he “never doubted that Harry was always doing what he earnestly, deeply felt was right for Nevada and our country.”
No.
Just no.
His career proved the only two things Reid loved more than himself were power and the Democrat Party.
Harry Reid did what he earnestly, deeply felt was right for himself and the Democrat party, to hell with the rest. If it happened to benefit Nevada, well then it was a happy accident.
Reid’s life might be, as McConnell noted, a “quintessentially American story, and Reid may have possessed “legendary toughness, bluntness, and tenacity” – but he used those characteristics in some nefarious pursuits during his long career.
Compared to Reid, current Democrat senatorial crime boss Chuck Schumer looks like Mother Theresa.
The Reid family, like the Biden clan, was involved in any number of self-enriching schemes in their home state.
Reid violated Senate rules with abandon, in 2006 he concealed a seven-figure payoff on a suspicious land deal orchestrated by a longtime friend known for political bribery and mob ties. Reid secretly collected a $1.1 million profit on land he hadn’t personally owned for years. In 2012 he was embroiled in a scandal involving a Chinese “green energy” client of a Nevada law firm run by his son Rory.
Never forget that Reid’s manipulation of Senate rules in 2010 gave America Obamacare, a plan so popular and great it had to be made mandatory and implemented through force of law. Of course, it went on to ruin health insurance for millions of Americans who were perfectly happy with the plans they had and, in the process, created another raft of entitlement programs that will never be erased.
According to news reports, in 2013 Reid took more than $130,000 in illegal campaign funds from a shady donor, Harvey Whittemore, who eventually went to jail. Whittemore hired four of the senator’s sons at a law firm in which he served as senior partner and worked with Reid on huge land deals that required federal legislation. Additionally, Reid sponsored at least $47 million in earmarks that directly benefitted organizations with close ties to one of his sons, Key Reid. The legislator also colluded with President Obama to nix a proposed nuclear waste dump in Yucca Mountain Nevada after U.S. taxpayers spent $15 billion on the project.
Also in 2013, Reid nuked the Senate filibuster rules thereby changing the way the Senate operates, possibly forever.
In 2013 Breitbart reported that Reid’s ritual abuse of his authority continued when he pressured the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to expedite a $115 million foreign investor visa deal critical to his son’s casino client. The family patriarch got the DHS to override agency procedures to rush through hundreds of visa applications from foreign nationals who helped fund a Las Vegas hotel and casino that hired Rory Reid to provide legal representation for the project.
That last one seems to be the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Reid announced his “retirement” a few days after this one hit the newswires.
Reid was everything every politician claims to hate, he was a hyper-partisan, lying, backstabbing, ruthless, self-dealing political ghoul who never missed an opportunity to stab Republicans and then twist the knife every chance he got.
Why Republicans feel compelled to rehabilitate the life story of a truly evil man is beyond me. Reid’s death, while a loss for his family, did not change his history any more than the deaths of Michael Brown or George Floyd changed theirs.
I’m sure most have been given the same advice my parents and grandparents gave me - if you can’t say something good about somebody, just say nothing at all.
Let’s do that.
Harry Reid’s family may deserve sympathy, but in my estimation, Reid and his career of corruption deserves little more than silence.

TC,
Certainly the CDC deserves attention when changing definitions to serve political purposes. What they did with "vaccination" is newspeak at it's finest. Pumping hospital counts by refusing to discriminate between "with" and "for" is worthy of the Lysenko Prize for Meretricious Communication. The same applies to death counts as well.
I would say the CDC spewings deserve the same level of attention as did the "news" provided by Pravda in the slave states of the USSR.

This is not new. I talked about this many years ago. There were groups selling offsets in the Amazon rain forests, where the trees were so far in the interior that they would never be harvested.
"...5. Fraud Trifecta: Nature Conservancy sells phony carbon offsets to publicly traded companies. The Nature Conservancy, the largest green group in the US, was caught selling phony carbon offsets, which are fake in the first place. The carbon offsets were sold for trees that were never in any danger of being cutdown. The purchasers of the offsets included large corporations like Blackrock, Disney and JPMorgan Chase, which then touted their green credentials to the public. The fraudulent sales of fake offsets that were then used to fool investors (which is against securities law) makes this a story of a green fraud trifecta...."

It is really great that the UK has a conservative government:
"...
"... Boris Johnson spelt out the revolt against modernity that lies at the heart of climate-change alarmism when he used his speech at COP to complain about the invention of the steam engine. That contraption, which gave rise to the Industrial Revolution itself, was a ‘doomsday device’ that started the clock ticking on the eco-calamity we currently face, he madly said. And this is a PM who claims to stand up for British history and British greatness."
